CEO FWD

Dear Busy Bees,

I am delighted to welcome you to the latest edition of B Magazine as we reflect on our remarkable journey this year!

As we gather our thoughts after the recent conference and awards events, I want to take a moment to celebrate not only our achievements but also each of you who has contributed to our success. Your dedication has been the heartbeat of our mission to give children the best start in life, and I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve accomplished together.

This edition’s theme is “recognition,” and it couldn’t be more fitting. We set ambitious goals at the beginning of the year, and thanks to your unwavering focus and hard work, we are achieving great things. We have surpassed our pre-pandemic performance levels, demonstrating improved cost control, occupancy rates, and labour management. Busy Bees is stronger than ever!

Our commitment to excellence has not gone unnoticed. We have been shortlisted for more industry awards than ever before, including the Nursery Management Today Awards and the Personnel Today Awards, and for the second consecutive year, we have been

certified as a ‘Most Loved Workplace’ being placed at number 25 in the top 100. These accolades are a testament to the dedication and passion you bring to your roles every day.

Investing in our people remains our number one priority. We understand that the combination of curious children and motivated teams creates an unbeatable partnership. Your feedback through the Be Heard survey has guided us to improve our recognition programs, invest in training, and improve benefits and salaries. Together we are leading the way in supporting each other.

This investment is already paying off with colleague satisfaction rising by a further 14 points and the positive impact on our service quality is evident, with 98% our Centres rated as Good or Outstanding—1% better than our nearest competitor! Safety is also paramount, and we are proud of the progress we’ve made in maintaining our ISO45001 certification, advancing from Bronze to Silver in the RoSPA award, and reducing accident rates.

Looking ahead, we have exciting plans with a pipeline of new centres that will help us maintain our number one position in the UK, with eight new sites planned to open this year.

Momentum is key in business, and I hope you share my belief that we are well on our way to achieving great things together.

As we move into 2025, the demand for childcare will continue to grow. Our commitment to expanding the depth and quality of our services will be further strengthened by the launch of the Bee Curious Curriculum.

We are also excited to enhance our digital capabilities. We acknowledge that our current systems need improvement to provide the best possible experience for our teams and families and with the launch of the new Busy Bees App, we aim to create a platform that is not just good but exceptional.

Reflecting on our purpose is essential. Our mission is to give children the best start in life, ensuring they are educated, safe, and happy. We are providing you with more tools than ever to make this happen. Your confidence in delivering exceptional care day in and day out is vital.

It is an absolute privilege to be your CEO and part of such a winning team. Together, let’s continue to shape a brighter future for the children in our care and for ourselves.

At Busy Bees, we’re passionate about the importance of recognition and the profound impact it has on our teams. But why is recognition so vital to us?

Why

it matters at Busy Bees

Simply put, when we take the time to notice and celebrate each other’s efforts, whether in the centres or at the support level, it creates a space where everyone feels valued and motivated, and fantastic behaviours are reinforced. It builds a sense of community where we can support each other, grow together, and feel proud of what we do. Let’s face it, childcare is no small feat, and neither is supporting the teams behind it. Recognition reminds us that every effort, no matter how big or small, matters.

Our vision is to give children the best start in life, and we know we can only achieve that when our teams feel appreciated and supported. Whether it’s our Nursery Centre teams or National Support Centre teams working behind the scenes, every role is crucial in shaping the lives of children.

By recognising these contributions, we ensure our vision is reflected in all that we do.

And here’s where you come in. Recognition starts with each of us. Whether it’s a simple thank you, a kind word, or a shout-out for something great you’ve noticed, taking a moment to acknowledge your team mates, both in your centre and beyond, can brighten someone’s day and lift everyone up.

Don’t just take our word for it, did you know that 48% of workers feel that a simple thank you for their contribution would make them feel appreciated (Source – Employee Benefits), and peer-to-peer recognition is 36% more likely to have a positive impact on performance than manager-only recognition?

Not only that, more than 80% of employees say that recognition improves their engagement (Source – People Matters) and 92% of workers are more likely to repeat an action they’ve received recognition for (Source – Springworks).

As you dive into this issue, we hope you’ll be reminded of how recognition is already a big part of our culture. From Living Our Values Everyday to our Be Brilliant awards, we’re exploring all the ways we can show our appreciation and celebrate each other, from our centres to our support teams. We would love to hear your feedback on what more we can do, please share your ideas with bmagazine@busybees.com

So, sit back, relax, and enjoy this issue, which is all about celebrating you, the heart of our business. Let’s keep recognising each other, because when we do, it’s not just about saying “Thank you”—it’s about the lasting impact we’re making on each other and every child in our care, shaping the future one moment at a time.

Bee Curious

Bee Curious is the new expertly developed curriculum, exclusively at Busy Bees.

Industry experts have carefully crafted this outcomefocused curriculum by bringing together the latest research in child development, 40 years of industry leading experience and global best practice from Busy Bees across the world, to give children a head start in school and in life.

Our teams have been highly trained on delivering Bee Curious to the highest standards through playful teaching and playful learning, to feed every child’s curiosity

Meet the expert: Gill Jones MBE

As Busy Bees Group Chief Quality Officer, Gill brings her vast experience of early years education best practice to create the innovative Bee Curious curriculum.

Gill joined us from Ofsted where she was Deputy Director of Schools and Early Years. As well as writing inspection frameworks, Gill led on Ofsted’s curriculum work for schools and early years and has been a key advisor to Government.

Before joining Ofsted, Gill was a successful headteacher and in her second headship started a private nursery on the school site to serve working parents like herself.

Gill Jones says “Together with leading global early years experts, I have been developing our Bee Curious curriculum for the past year, and we are so excited that you will begin to start implementing it in your centres.

We believe that every child is a natural born explorer. Our progression model curriculum is designed to nurture children’s innate curiosity and foster their lifelong love of learning through playful teaching. Bee Curious is centred around the unique child adapting to their individual needs and uses play-based learning to make education exciting and enjoyable.”

Bee Curious – a global curriculum

Every Busy Bees location will have a version of the Bee Curious curriculum, tailored to each country’s culture and context, but all sharing the vision of giving every child the best start in life. North America already has its own curriculum, and we’re excited to welcome Australian colleagues to the UK next month to see it in action. We’re also developing versions for Wales, Scotland, Jersey, and our Montessori centres.

What our teams are saying

We’re rolling out Bee Curious in phases. Teams in England will be trained from September to November, followed by a 12-week support plan to boost educators’ confidence in delivering the curriculum. Feedback from the training has been overwhelmingly positive.

“The training was delivered in such a fun and informative way”

“Amazing training – very informative; well set out and explained in detail”

“We were given lots of time to reflect, discuss and ask questions”

“Great training to help us feel more confident about the curriculum”

“Very enlightening and eye opening”

• Additional ‘Invitations to Learn’ are being developed to support children’s learning about festivals and celebrations

• A specific music programme is being written with support from our colleagues in Italy and will launch in 2025

• Bee Curious for Wales, Scotland, Jersey and Montessori will also launch next year

• Ongoing training will be available for educators through ‘Bee Curious masterclasses’ – you can book these via the VLA

Did you know?

• Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator for success in life, more than family circumstances, educational background, or income.

• Reading for pleasure also positively impacts on children’s wellbeing.

• Children who read for pleasure make better progress in maths, vocabulary and spelling than those who rarely read.

• That’s why in Bee Curious we have a focus on encouraging children to develop a love of books and stories.

• The number of words a child has heard and can speak by

Feed their

the age of three is a predictor of later language development.

• The number and quality of the conversations children have with others in a language rich environment are crucial for children’s language development and there are many studies that show that it is most effective to teach vocabulary explicitly.

• That’s why Bee Curious has a significant focus on direct vocabulary teaching and modelling.

• Lower levels of numeracy are linked to lower wages and lower health outcomes.

• Nearly 30% of people believe that being good at maths is an innate ‘gift’ rather than a skill that can be learnt.

• Helping children to develop positive attitudes towards and interest in mathematics from the early years is crucial for children’s development. It is important for all children that educators show their own confidence and enjoyment around maths.

• That’s why Bee Curious has an engaging play-based maths programme that supports educator’s confidence in teaching mathematics .

At Busy Bees, we recognise our systems are outdated. We’re thrilled to soon launch The Busy Bees App, a modern solution to reduce workload, digitise paper processes, and introduce user-friendly technology in every centre.

Launching in 2025, the Busy Bees App, based on the leading Famly system, will be enhanced for Busy Bees. This intuitive app will save time, reduce paper use, and consolidate multiple systems that families will also enjoy.

What will the Busy Bees App include*?

We’re looking to roll out functionality in phases progressively through 2025.

Initial Start Up Phase

New social media style news feed for parents, child sign-in, child details maintained by parents with alert notifications, daily updates.

Progressive Phases through 2025

• Accident reporting with parent notifications, sleep sheets

• Staff sign- in and out linked to payroll

• Bee Curious curriculum, staff sign-In

• Live availability and forecasting, staff rosters

And much, much more...

What else is happening?

All centres will receive an internet survey so that we ensure connections to your buildings are as good as they should be.

WiFi capability surveys will be completed in all centres with upgrades as needed.

New, bigger and faster tablets will be sent to centres (currently based on two per room). Plus a CD tablet the centre can then allocate as best required.

A comprehensive communication plan is underway so that all families, colleagues and CDs are fully aware of the change, what this will mean for them and how they can help to make the most of this new technology.

Make The Busy Bees App a Success

The Busy Bees App promises to revolutionise our work. Your help is crucial for a smooth launch, ensuring up-to-date data and archiving old records. Start by updating family particulars now.

Bee Curious aligns perfectly with the app, enhancing observation writing and planning. While training isn’t necessary for this intuitive system, we’ll provide in-app videos and guides to support you.

When is this revolution coming?

We’re starting small to perfect the app before wider releases. Scotland launches in November, with full rollout in 2025. It’s worth the wait!

to Sustainability

At Busy Bees, we are dedicated to becoming the greenest global childcare business.

Our main goals are to cut energy use and carbon emissions, reduce waste, increase landfill diversion, and eliminate single-use plastics.

Reducing Energy and Carbon Emissions

We’re committed to being carbon neutral by 2030 for scope one and two emissions, offsetting any carbon from gas, fuel, or electricity with certified schemes like conservation or tree planting.

To start, we’re aiming for a 10% energy efficiency boost in our centres by 2026, based on 2023 levels, and reducing carbon output by using more sustainable fuels. By the end of 2024, we will have:

• Switched to renewable electricity and carbon-neutral gas at all directly managed sites.

• Replaced 41 boilers and hot water cylinders with efficient systems, and 71 gas cookers with electric ones.

• Installed over 35 solar systems and 20 voltage optimizers.

• Added electricity and gas meters across our estate, with energy clips at select sites for better monitoring.

• Completed 24 full LED refurbishments.

• Kept our vehicle fleet 97% electric or hybrid.

Reducing energy isn’t just about tech; it’s about behaviour too. We encourage colleagues and children to adopt energy-saving habits. Check out our energysaving checklists, ideas, and “switch-off” stickers on the Knowledge Hub.

Minimising Waste and Increasing Landfill Diversion

All centres can now sort waste into dry mixed recycling, food, nappy, and general waste to lessen environmental impact and enhance recycling. Busy Bees is dedicated to cutting waste yearly and encouraging landfill diversion. Food waste undergoes anaerobic digestion, while bin liners are sent to energy recovery facilities, aiding clean energy production. 95% of nappies are also used for energy recovery. Dry mixed recycling and general waste are sorted at facilities. To boost recycling rates, prioritise dry mixed recycling over general waste. Recycling materials into new products reduces the need for raw materials.

Reducing Single-Use Plastics

Last year, we removed disposable plastic cutlery, cups, and plates from the Shopping Hub. Next year, we’re phasing out single-use plastics from wipes, working with suppliers for alternatives, in line with the UK’s phase-out. Busy Bees no longer buys balloons, and event decorations are now reusable and paper-based.

“At our centre, we focus on sustainability by reducing single-use plastics. We’ve minimised nappy sack use and aim to eliminate them, introducing washable wet bags for wet clothes. Parents will wash and return them for reuse.

According to estimates, England uses 2.7 billion items of single-use cutlery — most of which are plastic — and 721 million single-use plates per year, but only 10% are recycled. Gov.UK

If successful, this will be a significant step towards zero plastic use across all centres.”

Sam Everton, AD @ Busy Bees Droitwich

New Guidance on Reducing Single-Use Plastic PPE

Two new guides aim to reduce single-use plastic PPE:

• CSG.10 Centre Guide to PPE: Details necessary PPE for tasks, stressing only essential single-use plastic PPE should be used.

• CSG.11 Centre Guide to Children’s Protective Clothing: Helps centres use PPE effectively to protect children’s clothing and reduce single-use plastic bags.

Sustainable September Contributions

We’re still collecting contributions from Sustainable September. Thanks to everyone involved! Updates will follow in the next B Mag edition.

These guides are on WikiBee and the Knowledge Hub’s Sustainability page. Implement them to enhance sustainability and cut costs.

“We set up a pre-loved parlour for families to pass on clothes, shoes, toys, and books, educating parents and children on the benefits and cost savings of reusing!”

Niamh’s Career Story

How long have you worked for Busy Bees? Since 2016, with an 8-month break in 2018, making it 5 years this November.

What development opportunities have you had since you started with us? Completed Childcare Level 2 and 3, Leadership and Management Level 5, and progressed from apprentice to Centre Director.

What motivated you to continue developing in yourself and progress as you have? I enjoy challenging myself and advancing my career. The supportive environment at my Centre feels like family, and I believe in lifelong learning.

What have you learnt about yourself on your journey from your first qualification to becoming a Centre Director? I’ve learned to trust myself. Coursework builds confidence by linking practice with theory. I’ve also learned to “go with it” and give my best, as things tend to work out.

What advice would you give to other team members looking to advance their careers at Busy Bees? Go for it! Qualifications in childcare open many doors. Busy Bees’ training team supports your learning needs, allowing you to gain experience and enjoy your qualification. Effective communication and understanding children’s behaviors are key to fostering positive relationships and ensuring children’s well-being.

From Early Years Practitioner to Early Years Educator From Apprentice to Centre Director

Hannah’s Career Story

How has your apprenticeship experience helped you grow both personally and professionally in your role in Early Years? My apprenticeship has greatly boosted my personal and professional growth. Personally, my confidence has increased, supported by my development coach, center director, and colleagues. Professionally, this confidence allows me to provide high-quality care and guidance to children and their families.

high-quality care and guidance to children and their families.

What have been the most valuable skills or lessons you’ve gained during your training, and how have you applied them in your day-today work? Key skills include listening and communication, essential for supporting children. I’ve improved these by understanding children’s speech, body language, and gestures, helping meet their needs and fostering their development. Effective communication also strengthens relationships with parents, providing feedback on their child’s progress.

What are your next steps now that you’ve completed your apprenticeship, and how do you see your career progressing at Busy Bees? I aim to continue as a Level 3 Early Years Educator, collaborating with colleagues to support children and families. I may consider roles like room leader in the future, but I’m currently content in my role, helping children develop individually and educationally.

Paul Clegg - Head of Creative

Your background prior to Busy Bees?

With over 25 years of experience in various UK B2B and B2C creative agencies, I have had the privilege of working with high-profile clients such as Benson for Beds, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), Levis, Tesco and Vodafone to name but a few. My career took a significant turn when I moved in-house as the European Creative Director for Carillion, where I honed my leadership skills until the company’s closure in 2018. This transition paved the way for my journey with Busy Bees, where I joined to contribute to the UP project.

How long you’ve been at Busy Bees?

I have been a part of the Busy Bees family since 2018, bringing my extensive experience and creative vision to the team.

Your most proud moment/project since working at Busy Bees?

One of my proudest achievements at Busy Bees has been the creation of the UP project alongside an incredible multidisciplinary team. More recently, I spearheaded the creative development of the Bee Curious Curriculum, which I believe will be a transformative initiative for Busy Bees, setting new standards in early childhood education.

What’s your favorite thing about the job?/ What you love about working at Busy Bees. What I love most about my role at Busy Bees is the dayto-day variety and the opportunity to collaborate with talented individuals across the business. The dynamic environment and the chance to make a meaningful impact on children’s education are truly rewarding.

Cultures, Creating Opportunities

Busy Bees operates in 10 countries, offering rich opportunities to share and learn from one another. This year’s Talent Exchange Programme, hosted in Asia, embraced the theme.

Nine delegates from Team UK joined 40 participants from across Busy Bees territories, starting their journey in Singapore on October 14th. They immersed themselves in the local customs and childcare practices, visiting centres and exploring Singaporean life. The delegation then travelled to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and finished their trip in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

During the programme, delegates collaborated on key projects focused on music, mental health, talent development, and inclusivity in Early Years. These projects fostered the sharing of best practices across regions.

Our lucky representatives are excited to share their thoughts on TEP:

Suraya Dos Santos – Assistant Centre Director at Wandsworth South Lambeth

“A fond farewell and thank you

Dear Busy Bees,

It’s hard to believe that the 30 September marked my last day at Busy Bees.

It feels like just yesterday that Simon announced my retirement at the end of May, and in all honesty, I think I’ve been in a bit of denial about leaving this wonderful company that I hold so dear.

Please know that even though I will no longer be actively involved, my heart and mind will always be with you. I genuinely wish you all the best in health, happiness, and success.

I feel incredibly fortunate to have spent 40 years doing something I truly love. Whilst the journey hasn’t always been easy, I feel privileged to have been part of such an amazing organisation. I have complete confidence that you will continue to support the delivery of exceptional opportunities for children.

When we founded our first nursery, it was driven by a commitment to provide high-quality, engaging learning opportunities for our own children. The early days were a steep learning curve, but we quickly realised that by offering exceptional service and care, we could create something truly special that parents would want for their children.

We didn’t hesitate to leave secure teaching jobs and sell our homes to fund that first nursery— after all, we believed it was the right decision for our children. Forty years later, with nearly one

thousand nurseries across the globe, it’s clear to see how the best care and education can shape lives and foster a lifelong love of learning. I am proud to have played a part in shaping so many children’s lives and ensuring better outcomes for them.

Whilst I can’t thank everyone individually—there are far too many of you, and you’d be here for days—my heartfelt gratitude goes to my fellow founders: John, Lynn, Pete, Dave, and Sally, without whom Busy Bees would not exist. A big thank you to our nursery teams, chefs, cleaners, and every wonderful educator, past and present, for caring for our children. I also want to acknowledge our NSC support teams for their behind-the-scenes efforts, and the leadership teams in every territory for their guidance and support.

Over the past 40 years, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside remarkable individuals, each dedicated to making a difference in the lives of our children. Under Simon’s leadership, I am confident that you will continue to focus on what matters most, supporting our people so that our educators can care for and educate our children, giving them the best start in life.

I wish you all good health, happiness, and success in everything you do. Thank you for everything you’ve done for Busy Bees. I will always be thinking of you and will cherish the memories we’ve created together.

Warmest regards, Marg Randles

farewell you”

The impact of working with Children in Need – Aliyana’s story

At just 9 months old, Aliyana was diagnosed with a muscle weakness called hypotonia, which meant things like learning to crawl, stand up and walk would be much harder for her. Not long afterwards she was also diagnosed with a rare genetic condition which affects how she speaks and how much she understands.

Aliyana had hospital appointment after hospital appointment. Her parents say they felt helpless and at a loss as to how they could support their daughter until someone at the hospital told them about a BBC Children in Need-funded project, Playskill.

The family began attending Playskill’s weekly sessions. As a result, Aliyana, now a bubbly 3 year old, has developed more quickly than expected. Playskill even helped Aliyana to take her first steps and to learn Makaton, allowing her to communicate with her mum and dad. The project has also provided emotional support for the rest of the family.

£300k

Over the last six years, we’ve been working with Child Bereavement UK and we’re delighted to share we’ve raised over £300,000 for the charity.

This is enough to fund;

• A programme of support for 391 families with young children whose mum or dad has died or where a baby or child has died

• 8462 calls to the CBUK helpline

• CBUK’s work with schools for around two and a half years

• All of CBUK’s bereavement services around the UK for a eight and a half days, helping children, young people, and families to rebuild their lives after the devastation of bereavement

Thank you to all of our colleagues for their fundraising efforts. This will make a significant impact to families across the UK.

Next year, we will still be working with CBUK on some project-based fundraising campaigns but our main charity partnership will be with Children in Need. Stay tuned for more updates on initiatives and ways to get involved soon!
