All of the original rides including a 1918 Herschell Spillman carousel and ferris wheel have been refurbished and are still in use. A recent Smithsonian Affiliate, The Witte opened to the public in 1926, and is in the midst of a $100 million rennovation. Named for Alfred Witte, it contains art, science and nature exhibits and recently opened HEB Children’s Body Adventure. 210.357.1900 www.wittemuseum.org Botanical Gardens, 555 Funston off Broadway, was developed on 38 acres at an abandoned quarry donated by George Washington Brackenridge in 1899.
