The Evolution

of the

river walk by Nancy Martinez

RIO Magazine

www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

Throughout its long history, many people have contributed to the San Antonio River, but no one has been quite as influential as Robert H. H. Hugman.

A San Antonio native, Hugman was born in 1902 and graduated from Brackenridge High School. He went on to study at the School of Architecture and Design at the University of Texas at Austin. After spending three and a half years in New Orleans, Hugman returned to San Antonio, inspired by New Orleans’ exploitation of its French roots. Hugman’s newly founded San Antonio architecture firm geared itself towards embracing the Spanish heritage of the area. Hugman first conceived his River Walk plan in 1929, after a series of floods prompted the city to consider paving the river channel, creating a concrete storm sewer. In opposition, Hugman proposed “The Shops of Romula and Aragon,” a tourist attraction that would beautify the river while also creating flood-control systems. His grand plan imagined the river being lined with water-level apartments, parks and restaurants, and containing Venetian-style boat rides. Hugman designed everything to great detail, including 31 unique staircases, bridges, water elements, an outdoor theater, and even the landscaping. When first proposed in 1929, it was only his earth-lined bypass channel that was built due to limited funding, but Hugman continued to push his project for the next seven years, until the Works Progress Administration and determined hotel owner Jack White made funding available in 1938. On March 25, 1939, construction broke ground on the river project with Hugman as the architect. Unfortunately, due to disagreements, Hugman was fired in 1940, and even though the project was completed a year later, it was largely unused and became a popular location for crime and vandalism. It wasn’t until 1961 when the city brought in the major designers of Disneyland to determine the commercial potential of the river. While their plan was not adopted, improvements were made incorporating some of Hugman’s original details, and the river was slowly transformed into the River Walk we know today. In 1946, Alfred F. Beyer excavated the basement of his appliance storeSchuler- and opened a Mexican restaurant- Casa Rio. Today, his grandson

www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

Bill Lyons is a co-owner of the restaurant and he recalls the evolution of the river walk. “It didn’t happen overnight,” Lyons said. “My grandfather was a hardworking guy, he started with a Xochimilco style gondola and offered a ride with dinner, then he teamed up with the Kiwanis Club that had Fiesta Noche del Rio and offered a boat ride to the show, then it evolved to having meals on the boat.” For many years, Casa Rio was the only restaurant on the river until the 1968 World Fair which brought the construction of the750 foot Tower of the Americas and the new concrete lined extension of the river bend. The 10 million dollar project allowed for barge traffic into the new exhibit hall and the convention traffic flourished. “It [HemisFair] was a turning point for the river walk,” Lyons said. “People were finally willing to make an investment in the river walk.” Today, Casa Rio serves more than half a million patrons a year and the river walk hosts more than 11 million visitors. The river walk has been expanded to more than 15 miles to cover the Mission Reach and the Museum Reach. The Mission Reach is an eight-mile trek that was carefully restored and converted into a beautiful park full of life and activity. Kayaking can be enjoyed on this section of the river. The Museum Reach is the newest extended section of the river walk featuring colorful art and sound installations. The San Antonio Museum of Art, The VFW Post 76, and the shop and restaurant-filled complex The Pearl Brewery are all accessible via the Lock and Dam system. In recent years, the City of San Antonio installed more than 50 plaques along the River Walk identifying original Hugman-designed features, in recognition of his original vision. To further honor his legacy, the Paseo del Rio Association is working to erect a statue of Hugman on the River Walk. Had Boudro’s been serving on the River Walk back then, Jim Bowie could have carved his Center Cut Top Sirloin with a butter knife. Prime steaks, Gulf Coast seafood and the best Margaritas around have made Boudro’s one of the Alamo City’s most loved restaurants. Frommers says “Everybody loves this old standby on the River Walk.” Join us riverside, inside or (with reservations) on a barge dinner cruise.

A Tropical Paradise on the River Walk When it opened in 1962, The El Tropicano was the first hotel on San Antonio’s famed Riverwalk. Hip and fashionable from the start, the “El Trop” was inspired by the popularity and casual glamour of Acapulco beach resorts. The hotel quickly gained a reputation with movie stars, rock legends and at least one U.S. president from Texas, who all loved the hotel for its unique, tropical appeal. Today, the El Tropicano is fashionably updated with a fun, retro twist that pays respect to the hotel’s original style. Nestled in the heart of the Riverwalk, on the progressive Museum Reach guests are minutes from exciting restaurants attractions and museums on the original section of the Riverwalk, the Pearl Brewery and the “South Bank.” For over 50 years the El Trop has been a part of the very fabric of San Antonio that sets the River City apart from any other in the state. The hotel mission has remained consistent over the past 52 years: Give back to the community that has given us so much over the years. The El Trop supports and partners with the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, Arts SA and many other organizations throughout the community. For many reasons, specifically its generosity to the art community, the hotel has gained the unofficial designation as “Hotel to the Arts”.

As part of the El Trop’s sponsorship of the 2014 Luniaria the famed artist, Basco Vazko, was commissioned to paint a 5 story mural on the hotels south tower exterior. The work will accent the culture of San Antonio and the history of the hotel. Basco Vazko lives and works in Santiago, Chile. Born 1983 Basco Vazko works as a painter and collagist in different mediums, places and surfaces ranging from vintage magazines, paper, stones and shells. Since 1998 has painted public pieces in Santiago, Valparaíso, Sao Paulo, Provo, Utah; New York, Nantes, Portland and his work has been exhibited in Beijing, Paris, San Francisco, Valencia, LA, Portland and Santiago. The local work will be a welcome addition to the Riverwalk’s picturesque Museum Reach. The hotel continues to be one of the most well known and popular venue’s for social, cultural and political events in the city. One of the largest facilities in San Antonio, according to San Antonio Business Journal, the central location and 308 guestrooms make the El Tropicano a tradition that will last another 50 years.

A Prime Experience in the Heart of San Antonio

Bohanan’s Prime Steaks and Seafood The moment you step through the doors of Bohanan’s Prime Steaks & Seafood, it’s as though you have stepped back in time as you realize this is not your typical watering hole or touristy restaurant. With an atmosphere that is simultaneously elegant, sophisticated and cozy, this long-standing San Antonio favorite is a “must try” according to locals and Texas Monthly alike. Named one of Yahoo Travel’s 10 classic steakhouses to visit in the United States, Bohanan’s Prime Steaks is known for its juicy and flavorful cuts paired with old-world charm and Texas spirit, making it the perfect setting for enjoying a civilized evening of cocktails and conversation. Yahoo Travel described Bohanan’s as “old-school New York” and acknowledged the restaurant as the first to use Akaushi beef in the U.S. Special mention was also made that everything is mesquite grilled, Texas style, over an open flame. The restaurant was also recognized by USA Today in honor of Father’s Day, listing the restaurant as a terrific place to take dads who love steak and praising its craft cocktails, Akaushi beef and overall atmosphere.

“The cattle are raised on a healthy diet that creates superior marbling and texture,” Executive Chef and Owner Mark Bohanan said. “We love it because it’s very tender, juicy and flavorful, all perfect complements to the atmosphere I set out to create 12 years ago.” In addition to exceedingly high standards when it comes to steak, Bohanan’s features an unparalleled bar experience that offers the highest quality cocktails, beers and spirits. Craft cocktails and music are key elements of the restaurant and bar’s atmosphere and accompany the savory steak aroma with smooth and soulful notes. A range of ambient tunes can be heard from American standards, jazz, cool bossa nova beats and R&B, while live jazz is also featured weekly. Come to Bohanan’s and take a table, perch at the bar or have a seat in the deep comfort of a leather club chair and let the lively atmosphere take you back to old world times as the quiet and professional staff serves you delicious steak and classic cocktails. Linger over lunch or enjoy dinner—no matter what time of day, Bohanan’s will delight your taste buds and remind you of good times.

Bohanan’s offers Akaushi beef in addition to USDA prime to create a tasty and memorable experience for guests. Many beef experts believe Akaushi meat to be the most palatable and healthy in the world.

Downtown

Historic Main Plaza by Leandra Hernandez

No visit to San Antonio is complete without a visit to historic Main Plaza. Here is where the past meets the present in the surrounding of structures old and new and a vibrant, bustling atmosphere of culture, art and music come together making it very much a part of our local, downtown scene. Main Plaza or Plaza De Las Islas was developed in 1730 when Spanish urban planners in the New World hoped to create an area that would reflect the community interests of the people which would include a church and a civic center. The plan began with San Fernando De Bexar, (San Antonio) and the formation of the iglesia, our 18th century church, now a Cathedral. From its front door, surveyors marked off surrounding streets to form the plaza whereupon government buildings, stores and housing were planned and built in an interlocking pattern forming a grid that placed the church at the center of a ‘cross pattern’. The plaza became a lively walkable area and atmosphere of burgeoning shops, festivals, parades, rallies and more until the introduction of the streetcar which put a damper on pedestrian-enabled street-life. Soon the development of the railroad and trolleys in 1890 led people out of the area and into suburbs. As the city continued to grow, so did the structures in the plaza which finally forced most local merchants away and the area soon transcended into a park. 32

RIO Magazine

It wasn’t until the late twentieth century that revitalization efforts were made to bring back the civic, social and cultural force the plaza once had. Since 2006, major changes have taken place with programs featuring concerts, farmers markets, community events, riverwalk activities and more in hopes of making Main Plaza a destination point for tourists and locals alike. Main Plaza, one of only four colonial plazas in the United States and the only one with a cathedral was back on the map and in our heart. Currently, a few big programs have been developed and featured in the plaza making a large impact on our city’s heritage and urbanization. The first, SAN ANTONIO | THE SAGA is a twenty-four minute video art installation projected 7,000 sq ft on the façade of The San Fernando Cathedral. Produced by renowned French artist, Xavier De Richemont, the installation is colorful, vibrant and breathtaking with custom choreographed music in surround sound which narrates the historical discovery, settlement and development of San Antonio. Admission is free and showtimes are Tuesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 9pm, 930pm and 10pm. The second, Mujeres Mercado, a night market in the plaza features objets d’art handmade by all-female artisans. Here you will find food trucks, beer and wine, local wares, fashion, art, entertainment and more all taking place every third Saturday of www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

the month from 7pm to 11pm. This ‘market under the stars’ hopes to bring locals and visitors the ultimate urban evening experience to enjoy the rich culture, beautiful evening lit backdrop of the plaza and craft-making skills of local artisans for a fun shopping experience for all. Lastly, a Famer’s Market held in the plaza every Tuesday from 10:00am-1:00pm on 115 North Main Avenue is a chance to buy, eat and enjoy fresh and locally-grown vegetables and fruits from local vendors in this open-air downtown famer’s market. Healthconscious focused and a great alternative to your everyday lunch, local chefs working with the San Antonio Foodbank change the menu weekly offering up delicious food and drink all budgetfriendly. Come and experience the variety of food options, vendors, music, cooking demonstrations and more that highlight San Antonio’s focus on eating and living healthy while on a lunch break or- for life. While these are a smattering of the events in Main Plaza, many other programs are on offer such as Bike|Beat, Cycle-In Cinema, Picnic on the Plaza, holiday events and others to captivate and delight individuals and families alike. “Our concentration is to draw anyone and everyone from all demographics to enjoy great neighborhood experiences with long lasting impressions. Whether it’s combining state of the art technology with history and heritage or creating an awareness to support local musicians and artists, our vision is to provide a space where visitors become natives and natives come to visit.”– Ashley Quinn, Programs Manager, Main Plaza Conservancy. The growth and revitalization of Main Plaza is in full force and you should definitely get in on the action or even just drop by for a slice of (healthy!) pie in the farmers market, buy a handmade plate to put it on in the night market and then sit down and enjoy the video amongst the stars- all available in San Antonio’s historic Main Plaza. ING WILLIAM Neighborhood

In the 1800s, the grandly ornamented residential area just south of downtown San Antonio was pure potential in the form of wide-open farmland. Once the property of the area’s missions, the land later was portioned out and bought by settlers such as the influential Carl Guenther, who made his fortune by operating Pioneer Flour Mills on the lower bend of the San Antonio River. He and other successful German immigrants brought European architectural flourishes to the area in the mid-century as they built large mansions in the Greek Revival, Victorian and Italianate styles — and they granted the area its European name, after King Wilhelm I, who ruled Prussia from 1861 to 1888. The neighborhood’s development in the 1840’s gave way to decline by the 1920’s, when wealthy residents began moving out to North San Antonio, leaving the mansions to be segmented into apartments. Forty years after that, the international attention brought to the city by the six-month-long 1968 World’s Fair, known as HemisFair ‘68, served to launch a resurgence of interest in King William. A new generation of creative young professionals discovered the neighborhood and began to move in. “In the 1960s, there was a resurgence of wanting to save our history through the built environment,” said King William Association executive director Cherise Bell.

The King William neighborhood proves that what rises and falls can certainly rise again.

Once again, it was recognized as a treasure. Neighbors petitioned to have the neighborhood designated as a National Register Historic District, and in 1972 it became the first such residential district in Texas. By 1984, the district’s boundaries were widened to include an eclectic mix of nearby cottages built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These days, residents and visitors can enjoy the river walk beyond the downtown area and explore the inviting neighborhood’s historic homes, acclaimed eateries and contributions to San Antonio’s arts scene. Step out of downtown to enjoy a stroll down the well-kept streets of what’s known as the Mission Reach, the section of the San Antonio River extending south of downtown and dotted with five historic missions. Drop by the King William Association headquarters — an 1880s house at 1032 S. Alamo St., that stands near a convent-turned-bar — and snap up one of two free brochures on walking tours that outline the history of the neighborhood’s architecturally notable houses. In addition to two homes preserved as museums — Villa Finale, the only National Trust for Historic Preservation Museum in Texas, and Steves Homestead, owned by the San Antonio Conservation Society — the neighborhood is home to several galleries. Or you can rent a B-Cycle and ride along the river or stop in at one of King William’s award-winning destination restaurants, such as Hot Joy, Monterrey, Tito’s, El Mirador, Rosario’s, Madhatters Tea House & Cafe and The Friendly Spot. For more information, visit kingwilliamassociation.org or call (210) 227-8786.

A CENTURY OFF BROADWAY SEGUIN

by Rita Zenzen Heck

Known as River Avenue before it became Broadway in 1925, it has been one of San Antonio’s most important corridors since the mid-1800s when brewers like August Busch built elaborate facilities off Broadway which have since recycled into cultural, retail and residential venues. Many of its jewels will be celebrating Centennial-plus birthdays (San Antonio Zoo was 100 in 2014) while new apartments and retail centers are adding vibrancy to the area, just north of downtown.

Brackenridge Park In 1899 George Washington Brackenridge donated 199 acres along the San Antonio River and an additional 144 acres to the City for parkland. Named for him, Brackenridge Park opened to the public in 1901. Work began on transforming quarries on the site into the Sunken Garden Theatre in 1915 with the San Antonio Civic Opera Company performimg the Pirates of Penzance at the grand opening.

From Brewery to SAMA SAMA (San Antonio Art Museum), at 210 W. Jones off Broadway, is housed in the former Lone Star Brewery buildings which were constructed between 1894 and 1904. Moving to new headquarters on the River south of downtown, Lone Star used the original buildings for storage and warehousing until the 1970s when the San Antonio Museum Association acquired the complex and opened the Museum of Art in 1981. In 1994 the association was desolved and it became SAMA, a world class art museum that has expanded several times over the years. Free on Tuesdays from 4 to 9pm and Sundays from 10am to Noon. 210.978.8100; www.samuseum.org.

The Japanese Tea Gardens opened in 1918 and was maintained by caretaker/artist Kimi Eizo Jingu and his family. Recently restored with the new Jingu House restaurant overlooking the magical gardens and ponds. www.jinguhousessa.com

The Pearl The Pearl Brewery was established in 1883 in San Antonio with elaborate buildings resembling castles in a complex off Broadway. Silver Ventures, Inc. purchased it in 2001 and transformed it into a well rounded community of education (American Culinary Institute), retail, restaurants and residential housing, recycling all of the buildings on the property and recently opening a hotel in the palatial brew house. Farmers markets and many special events are held on the property which can be reached by Barge Taxi, car or bus. www. atpearl.com/map www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

The first official municipal golf course in Texas opened in Brackenridge Park in 1916. The golf clubhouse replaced the existing Jockey Clulb in 1923. San Antonio Zoo In 1914, Brackenridge deeded an additional scenic plot of land in Brackenridge Park for the public viewing of elk, buffalo, deer, monkies, two lions and four bears which has become the 56 acre San Antonio Zoo. With the forming of the San Antonio Zoological Society in 1928, the introduction of revolutionary cageless exhibits and rare animal species, made it one of the leading zoos in the country. In 1956, it made headlines as the first zoo in the nation to exhibit a whooping crane and in 1972, the first white rhino to be born outside of Africa. An $8 million expansion includes Zootennial Plaza commemorating its first RIO Magazine 41

A real treat for young and old. 210.824.4351 Further down, on the right, is Do Seum. The greatly expanded children’s museum, currently located at 305 E. Houston St., will open in June. For the past century, San Antonio has skillfully taken huge holes in the ground and transformed them into places of pride, beauty and enjoyment. Such a stellar reputation for recycling rests on a foundation that’s literally rock-solid. Both residents and visitors alike express surprise when they learn many of their favorite fun spots were once quarries. Through trial, error and inspiration, San Antonio quarry “recyclers” took those ragged chunks of real estate and created a zoo, two theme parks, stadiums, golf courses, shopping centers, a resort, dozens of dining spots and the like. To see how San Antonio became a rock star, take a quarry safari. Begin just north of downtown where German masons in the 1840s extracted abundant limestone and used it in the construction of landmarks such as the Menger Hotel next to the Alamo. Four decades later, quarrying intensified after a geologist discovered that limestone in what is now Brackenridge Park’s Japanese Tea Garden contained the proper proportions of lime and clay for manufacturing Portland cement in massive kilns. Founded in 1880, Alamo Cement mined that area and then moved farther north in 1908 to Alamo Heights as San Antonio’s growth started to encroach. Surveying the huge holes left behind, Parks Commissioner Ray Lambert incorporated the steep quarry walls into the San Antonio Zoo, which opened in 1914 as one of the world’s first “cageless” zoos. Then from 1917 to 1919, Lambert supervised construction of the Japanese Tea Garden, which he envisioned as an oriental flower garden in the quarry pit. Today the Garden with its lush landscaping and koi ponds offers a quiet www.thesanantonioriverwalk.com

respite in contrast to the non-stop hum of traffic on nearby U. S. 281. The renovated Jingu House, named for a former Japanese-American caretaker, Kimi Eizo Jingu, offers visitors a chance to rest and enjoy snacks, salads and desserts. Neighboring landmarks – the Sunken Garden Theater, Alamo Stadium and Trinity University – also emerged from the quarry rubble. The outdoor theater hosts concerts under the stars as well as the Taste of New Orleans festival during Fiesta San Antonio each April. To the west across U. S. 281 sits 23,000-seat Alamo Stadium, also known as The Rock Pile, completed in September 1940. Then there’s Trinity University and its two-tiered Skyline Campus, named for the dramatic view of downtown, particularly at night.

locomotive and rotary drill stand like sentries at entrances to the Market’s parking lots, and a massive generator used in powering the quarry dominates the lobby of the Regal 16-plex Cinemas. Several hundred yards away from the Market lies the Quarry Golf Club and its distinctive, 90-acre back 9 in the quarry pit where errant golf balls ricochet with regularity. Residents of Lincoln Heights in stately homes and apartments overlooking the cratered course watch from the quarry rim above as golfers struggle to break par below.

In 1986, Alamo Cement ended operations in Alamo Heights in favor of another site farther north, so the company formed a team to plan a 475-acre development that introduced the Quarry Golf Club in 1993 and Alamo Quarry Market in 1998. The first task was to examine the company town of Cementville – 135 structures in all – to see what could be salvaged and retained in the development’s design.

Another massive makeover occurred in the early 1990s at the former Redland-Worth Quarry along the city’s IH 10 West gateway and Loop 1604. United Services Automobile Association (USAA) formed a subsidiary to create La Cantera (The Quarry) and fill up that gaping 215-acre chasm with the Fiesta Texas theme park, the La Cantera Hill Country Resort, two signature golf courses, a golf academy and the Shops at La Cantera retail center with 165 stores, shops and eateries. Shopaholics also can explore The Rim, a 100-store complex in the former Martin Marietta Quarry across from Six Flags on IH 10.

Locating Alamo Quarry Market and its 75 shops and restaurants isn’t difficult at all because of five 201-foot-tall chimneys still standing just off U. S. 281 between downtown and San Antonio International Airport. Other pieces of quarry heavy equipment such as a steam

Two Six Flags rides – The Iron Rattler roller coaster and the park’s railway – actually penetrate the 100-foot-tall quarry wall, and a football-field-sized section serves as a giant screen for an evening laser and fireworks finale. The theme park also figures into golf RIO Magazine 47

continued experiences at La Cantera’s The Resort Course. The par-4 7th hole offers a panoramic view of Six Flags and a 60-foot plunge from tee to green.

The most-recent recycling project has focused on Longhorn Quarry in Northeast San Antonio. In 2010, philanthropists Gordon and Maggie Hartman opened Morgan’s Wonderland, the world’s first theme park designed with special-needs individuals in mind and built for everyone’s enjoyment. The completely wheelchair-accessible park has become the anchor of Wonderland, Texas, a family fun destination that also features the STAR (South Texas Area Regional) Soccer Complex, with 13 fields for tournaments and league play; Toyota Field, home of the 2014 North American Soccer League champions, the San Antonio Scorpions; and Monarch Academy, a school for students with special needs. Neighbors include the Children’s Rehabilitation Institute of Teletόn USA, which helps youngsters overcome physical challenges, and North East Independent School District’s Heroes Stadium. To call attention to its quarry heritage, Morgan’s Wonderland incorporated historical photos into the design of the Wonderland Express train station. The mile-long train ride circles an 8-acre lake, a quarry holdover that has become quite popular because of the catch-and-release fishery of mostly catfish and bass.

San Antonio has become quite adept at refilling big gouges in the ground with fun things to do, and since quarrying is continuing on the city’s northern perimeter, it’s likely the future will bring more transformations and add new experiences for an even more-extensive quarry safari.

Tour San Antonio Like A Local

The Fourth Annual

San Antonio Cocktail Conference

Crafting the perfect, quality cocktail relies on assembling just the right ingredients, and meticulously blending them in such a way that something special is created. The same can be said of crafting the San Antonio Cocktail Conference (SACC). This four-day extravaganza assembles all the right ingredients, combining equal amounts of education and expertise, fun and philanthropy, and blends them together to create what Fodor’s Travel has deemed one of the “Best Cocktail Festivals” in the country. This year’s Cocktail Conference will take place Jan. 15-18 and will once again bring cocktail experts, top bartenders, sponsors, and cocktail aficionados to the Alamo City for drinking and dining. And, as has been the tradition since its inception four years ago, 100 percent of SACC profits are donated to local children’s charities. “Over the past three years, we have given more than $240,000 to benefit local children’s charities,” says Cathy Siegel, Executive Director of Houston Street Charities, the organization behind the event. “It’s one of the things that we are most proud of, and that sets us apart. And it’s just a lot of fun!”

RIO Magazine

SACC is about more than just libations. It’s about the entire cocktail culture, which encompasses the music and culinary aspects, too. And it’s not just for cocktail experts. The SACC celebrates that lifestyle through seminars, tastings, a cocktail competition, and, of course, parties, all of which are easy to enjoy for both the industry professional and the cocktail novice. When you combine experiencing new cocktail trends and old cocktail classics with a double shot of passion, mix in the charitable component, add a healthy splash of fun, and serve up all this education and celebration in a central location, you have the recipe for the San Antonio Cocktail Conference. For a complete listing of events and ticket information, visit the SACC website, www.sacocktailconference.com San Antonio Cocktail Conference is a Houston Street Charities event. Houston Street Charities is a non-profit organization created by Bohanan's Prime Steaks & Seafood and Mark Bohanan. It was founded to oversee the San Antonio Cocktail Conference and other charitable endeavors of Bohanan’s, in an effort to make sure that giving back to community remains at the forefront of all of the events. San Antonio Cocktail Conference is a community partnership that donates 100 percent of conference profits to children’s charities
