CHAIN REACTION

Welcome to the Sensil® Trendbook – Chain Reaction 2022 - an annual approach to emerging markets, consumer attitudes, and performance yarns. Six trends highlight the key influences, complete with an annual core color palette and seasonal accents define a range of apparel sectors.
The title alone sums up the mood that we have to embrace as collaboration at all stages of the textile chain will ensure a smoother recovery. Post-pandemic and the world has had to reboot, forced to reassess the past, keeping the best and leaving the rest. Times are changing, not just in our industry but globally, as the consumers’ consciousness shifts towards increased demand for sustainability, a reassessment of their lifestyle, and a new approach to technology and communication.
More importantly, Sensil® continues on its sustainable journey, with the latest introduction to the portfolio of yarns, WaterCare, vastly reducing the amount of water required and eliminating the dyeing stage being introduced. This new development sits alongside premium nylon 6.6 yarns that deliver a high level of quality, performance, durability, and innovation.
Before diving into the 2022 trends, first, take in the three drivers influencing all sectors of the market, and across industries in general. Diligent, Identity, and Progressive infiltrate and shape the trends at many levels, essential for us to move forward for 2022.
So, come and join Sensil® in Chain Reaction. Let’s work together in creating innovative, functional, and efficient collections that will appeal to the rebooted lifestyle and habits of the 2022 consumer.
Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of their eco-footprint as they look to brands, in all aspects of their lifestyle address the issues of climate change and reduced use of precious resources, including water and energy.
The amount of waste, a result of over-consumption is a trigger, as many switch to the ‘buy better, buy less’ concept in a bid to be more efficient. By buying better quality, the life cycle of a product is increased, also leading to the possibility of a second life in the ‘preloved’ market.
Longevity is a key factor in sustainability, as is recycling and circularity. The diligence of consumers varies in appearance: some want to shout out and others discreetly expect the brands to respect their life choices and the environment.
Inclusivity also features, as a new openness emerges from age-defying collections and body-positive acceptance displays new confidence from consumers. Overall this influence is kind: environmentally kind, human kinship and sensually kind through touch and protection from Sensil®
During the global lockdown and restrictions of movement, one area to see an increase was the introduction of health and fitness via streamed classes to the living room. With consumers having had the time to reassess their lifestyle values and realize that there are more important factors in life than being 24/7 hyper-connected and constantly busy being busy.
For 2022 this new generation of fitness enthusiasts, at various levels are expected to continue as well as spending more time in the great outdoors. This isn’t just about physical fitness, but mental fitness too, as consumers realize the benefits of activities.
This is where performance fabrics will play a new role, delivered with a higher level of creativity. With IDENTITY, the focus isn’t just towards new activities that involve sportswear, it is about flexible products that have multiple end uses, adapting to different situations. A new urban lifestyle emerges…
The rapid rise of digitalization at all levels, from industry to organizing consumers’ daily lifestyles had started to be regarded more as a disruptive influence than an efficient aid. But how times change, digitization was one of the saving graces through 2020, as communication and social platforms became crucial for our survival.
The brands and retailers with string digital platforms and cloud supply chains continued in business, but for global bricks & mortar retail, the damage remains to be seen. This new, continuously developing wave of technology can not be ignored, instead, it should be embraced and embedded into collections.
The supply chain is incorporating these new developments, from wearable technology printed on to Sensil® base fabrics to clean-cut fabrics, laser punchout and sonic stitching, all leading to a more efficient production but also adding to the sustainability credentials. The new processes coming through also allow for customization of garments, with the foundation formed from Sensil® fabrics, eliminating the ‘sameness’ that features on the market.
Keeping it real and grounded defines the direction here. It isn’t just about URLs in the IoT (internet of things) but coming through to IRL (in real life). Textile developments in this sector take on a traditional direction, understated, simple but apparel with a long-lasting life.
‘Buy better, buy less’ features strongly as classic and traditional structures come through in lightweight hands.
The longevity of apparel made from premium Sensil® fabrics reduce over-consumption, a problem in the past. However, whilst the fabrics are there, each brand has to take this into account, offering a more timeless design direction, leading to essential investment pieces that will transcend seasons.
Sensational touch to new generation basics. This is very much ‘it is was it is’ direction with sustainable practices and durability expected by the consumer. They want brands to be inherently responsible, they don’t want to be chasing after them. They want quality for their money with the added benefit of performance.

The outdoor sector, for all levels of physical performance, is set to grow in 2022, as the legacy of lockdown reminds consumers of the yearning to get outside. This adventurous spirit doesn’t just fit into the traditional outdoor sector but also influences street and action sports in creating a beacon of positivity.

There is a soft aspect in terms of tones to this the textile direction, light and airy. The confidence and faith placed in brands in being eco-caring through the production chain has to be delivered. If you don’t, you’ll lose their loyalty.
Sustainability in many forms is inherent to the Sensil® portfolio of premium Nylon 6.6 yarns, but two yarns are of particular interest here: Sensil® WaterCare and Sensil® EcoCare. Water-saving and recycled ticks the boxes for this particular clean-living consumer group, where the emphasis on organic food, urban cycling, electric cars through to outdoor exercise and health and fitness are becoming daily habits.

Meant to be seen, Exhibitionist is about lifting surfaces through yarn manipulation as we play with bright and sparkling jewel effects. Take surfaces bright and gleaming, this trend is meant to be seen but at the same time taking on board the eco-care aspect that Sensil® brings. From fashionably fun to right-on funky, this trend will energize a wide range of market sectors.
Microstructures add textural relief to woven surfaces, with color shining through like a positive beacon of hope in a world of uncertainty. The intensity of color tones works solid or mixed into a kaleidoscope of variations. Compact structures through to blistered jacquard textures bursts through. Energetic and irregular in terms of final applications, there is a sensorial appeal intertwined throughout. This is a fun direction that doesn’t renege on the responsibility of sustainable attributes, achievable through Sensil® nylon 6.6.
Sustainable performance is strong but so is the eclectic color combinations achieved through Colorwise – with multicolored variations emerging through a one-dye bath. FABRIC INSPIRATION
The pièce de resistance in this group has to go to Diamond, the fantastic shimmer and iridescent effect it can give, combined with the fact it is dyeable at the fabric or garment stage, moving away from that traditional metallic look. Great for ready-to-wear and hosiery, look to bringing it through to a glammed-up experience in the sportswear market. Britex also features, offering textured luster in contrast to the smooth surfaces.
Blistered surface effects and chromatically printed membrane effects ensure that there is a lot of fun in this trend without neglecting the function. Digital 3D prints push the boundaries, with graphics jumping from Sensil® surfaces, with a strong tendency towards chaotic graphics appealing, in particular to the soft sports sector. Sensil® Breeze is used against the skin in sports bras and leggings, delivering a cool feel. From swim to street, the gym to smart e-bikes, this lifestyle direction ensures the diversity and flexibility of garments for multiple end uses. Again, the buy better, buy less comes into play, but also buying better styling that adapts to different occasions.
The conscientious consumer isn’t just focused on the environment, they also want value for dollar from their brands, and are conservative in parting with their disposable income. The duality that apparel design can offer is key. The aftermath of working from home maintains the comfort factor, but a renewed approach with a higher level of color and detail.
Yoga was having a good run pre-Covid, but now it is even hotter. A new catchment of consumers of all ages have been introduced to the different styles of yoga available, having streamed free classes into homes. Varying levels of expertise feature, but with all sports and fitness activities, just attempting it is a bonus. Prints are crucial in this sector combined with Sensil® performance fabrics.
A return to ready-to-wear fashion is on the horizon, after months of casual living, the consumer is starting to itch for the good old days of dressing up and wearing shoes instead of sneakers. As much as the initial comfort workwear appealed, after time that traditional motive of looking forward to going out and changing into something different is going to return.
But if you think it is going to be back to the boring offering that broke the consumers’ appetite to fashion pre-Covid, think again. This resurrection of ready–to–wear has elements of glam, shine, color, and luster. Well worth waiting for.
A shot of iridescence and performance creates a vivid and eclectic approach to the urban scene. This is taking traditional performance fabrics, geared predominantly for the outdoors and placing them in a new arena with a wicked sense of styling. Avant-garde and far from dreary and bleak, this design direction creates a brand-new platform for traditional performance fabrics, as experimentation in terms of fabric use and style create a supreme Exhibition ist look.
Concerns for the environment and the future of the planet drive this group of consumers, who are ardently vocal in wanting a cleaner and efficient future, in all industries for the benefit of society. Traceability and transparency must be real, but creativity is also required combined with performance. Whilst sustainability has become an inherent factor in all aspects of the Sensil® trends, for this one, it is much more vocal, a badge of honor from the activism mood.
From the Paris Agreement to a reduction in carbon emissions and, water reduction ns and most of all waste, this consumer group wants goods that last, able to have a second life in the ‘pre-loved’ market. It doesn’t go without a digital input, with QR codes tracking the consumers’ experience with the garment to cloud chain technology in reducing waste and excess stock.
The overall mood is worn in, key pieces that look like they are diehard favorites from the eco-warriors wardrobe. Water-saving and recycling are key, with consumers buying into brands a strong and expressive digital voice across the social media platforms. In addition, the supply chain isn’t just about the ingredients within their garments, brands must also be transparent about their manufacturing and social responsibility.
Light neutral tones lead the way with eau de nil, slate, and sand, complemented with white, indigo (19-4027 TPX), and avocado green (17-0336 TPX) from the core color suggestions..
A moody approach with storm gray and clay red, further enhanced with white and khaki green (18-0521 TPX) and stone (15-1304 TPX) from the core palette.

Performance pursues a natural-inspired direction with the Sensil® range of fashion yarns creating neutral tone-on-tone heathered and melange effects. Sensil® BodyFresh ensures longer-lasting wear to garments. Digital prints are favored, mimicking recycled imagery and saving water. Brands shouldn’t stop at the sustainable sourcing of fabrics, also look into trims and zippers that have an added edge to the inherent sustainable strain influencing the market.

Athleisure led the way, but there is now a more pronounced sport styling that crosses from the workout to the walk around the neighborhood. Performance remains key, but so do the natural-touch circular knits and lightweight woven bottoms. The overall look is retro in regard to original sports pre-athleisure.

Denim’s dilemma is that it can’t lose its authentic look, but at the same time it has to move with the times. With the dyeing process of denim deemed water-intensive, cotton also seen as water-intensive in the growing, hybrid blends is a solution. Sensil® Breeze can deliver cooling in lighter weight qualities and Sensil® Heat the reverse in cooler climes. Flexibility is also key, with spandex essential in bistretch. Sensil® WaterCare is perfect for resurrecting the denim industry’s profile.
For winter it’s traditional to have high tech, high-level performance apparel, but with Activist we look to a retro approach again, with classic twill styles and jacquards giving the appearance of a hardened look against the elements. The fact is, this worn and natural understated look is created from high-level performance, from the initial Sensil® ingredients to the recycled membrane finish.
The increased use of streaming, from music through to TV, is creating self-reliance with consumers. Independent and unique, they aren’t part of the crowd, preferring to stay under the radar and shut away from the world with their over-ear headphones, drowning out the sounds of everyday life. Immersive experiences feature, with gaming and socializing via social media than physically meeting. This individuality comes through in terms of textile direction as an almost ‘Matrix’ inspiration features combined with digital influences. Matte and bright yarns feature, as do armor inspired jacquards and malleable spacers in delivering a protective element from the outside world.
Don’t be deceived by the dark and mysterious atmosphere of this direction. It embraces sensuality and addresses a new design direction. Underneath this hard-core look is a soft touch with shards of luminosity reaching out from the surface.
Pewter makes a move alongside celadon and sky blue. White is essential from the core palette and consider using black and slate gray (15-4305TPX) for a unisex approach.

With urban and sports attire having influenced the menswear market, there is a new resurgence of a smarter and kooky way of dressing with a strong individual style. For the younger end of the millennial market and older sector of Gen Z, suits and trench coats have become classics of the past, and there is an interest in reviving them.
But it is just garment styles that are being reworked, with fabrics with a modern performance edge replacing the tweeds and birds eye structures. A niche direction, it is one that is worth monitoring, with the K-pop legacy inspiring confidence and individuality in the menswear market.

Eliminating this finishing process saves the water, energy, and chemicals required to dye plus the significant energy needed to dry. This water-conscious yarn is a considerate choice to conserve water and energy and create products that are as richly beautiful as they are responsible.
Sensil® BioCare is enhanced with a special technology that reduces the persistence of textile waste in oceans and landfills, decreasing the impact on the Earth’s ecosystems. You can keep all the performance, style, quality, and comfort of your favorite designs but enjoy them more by making a conscious choice.
