DOWN DEVELOPMENTS

Benefits of Down

» Positive environmental image compared to synthetic insulation. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) commissioned by the International Down and Feather Bureau (IDFB) found that down has an 85 to 97 per cent lower impact than polyester.

» Natural

» Lightweight warmth

» PFC-free hydrophobic finishes

» Ethical - sourced as a by-product of the food industry - zero waste

» Not just biodegradable but compostablenitrogen content in down is a good fertilizer for soil

» Recycled down - new initiatives with brands and the consumer for a collective eco approach

» Down doesn’t degrade/weaken through recycling processes - circular economycontinuously recyclable

» Transparency key - animal welfare

» Higher level of innovation through chamber and baffle designs via fill power

Competition

» Synthetic insulation virgin or recycled

» Recycled PET from post consumer products

» A return to natural fiber insulation

» Wool, silk, cashmere, camel, lyocell

» Bio-based synthetics pure or in blends with natural fibers

» New heating fabrics - no longer dependent of down for thermal regulation in certain activities

ExpeDry quick drying down for use in extreme conditions to keep the insulation chamber dry. Chemical-free WR, RDS certifiied and can be applied to recycled down.

DTS - Down Tracking System - D2C - a new transparent standard for the responsbible sourcing of down and feathers - for a strictly controlled supply chain.

DOWN DEVELOPMENTS

Allied Feather & Down has a Track My Down facility on its website to trace the journey of the down in a product.

Re:Down provides Outdoor brands the possibility to fully recycle their down products. Re:Down organize collection through to recycling and processing the down for its next life cycle. This is a good opportunity to from brands to create take-back schemes with consumers to recycled down products.

Bosideng is accredited with the RDS (Responsible Down Standard), however there needs to be more transparency even with this Standard. Animal rights group PETA have uncovered RDS down farms that are not adhering to the policy of RDS in respect to animal welfare.

THERMAL REGULATING DEVELOPMENTS HIGHLIGHTS

» Vaporized performance using metallic ingredients for barrier technology

» Apparel brands are developing their own thermal regulating barriers

» Hybrid blends of Phase Change Materials (PCMs) and down result in light weight, less bulky garments but with high level warmth

» Ingredients for Far Infrared (FIR) applied in coatings or micro-encapsulated into yarns

» Natural ingredients from graphene (graphite) to wool, could make interesting stories when connected with the sustainable and natural aspect of Down

» Printed thermal developments - added detail to linings

» Wearable technologies for warmth

» Consumers are looking for lighter, less voluminous products for the outdoors market

THERMAL REGULATION DEVELOPMENTS

HeiQ XReflex is an innovative radiant barrier technology that reflects heat back to the body, maintaining the same level of warmth with as little as half the insulation material. Thinner, lighter and warmer fabrics require less insulation, so therefore less bulk, with excellent heat retention. The HeiQ barrier has no impact on the DWR and Downproof of fabrics. Less insulation material to keep you warm.

Company: HeiQ

Schoeller E-Soft-Shell, E-soft-shell is a light laminate with heatable lining, in which a conductive network is integrated all over. The material is flexibly cuttable, dyeable and heatable as well as washable. Flexibly cuttable, dyeable, heatable and washable material. Flexibly cuttable, dyeable, heatable and washable material. The potential of this e-textile for warmth as well as wearable technology and electro-osmosis.

Osmotex/Myant using Schoeller E-Soft-Shell. The application of textile computing from apparel is one development that is possible on the Myant Platform, where a continuous and ambient connection between people and their bodies, their communities, and their internet (IoT) - enabled warm environments across all aspects of daily life. Wearable technology combined with personalized systems.

Aluminum coating that can reduce the bulk of down jackets by 30% to maintain the warmth, warmth-toweight ration. Aluminum is included in the finish and it can be applied to a wide range of fabrics without reducing the quality of their performance. Developed by LifeLabs, an outdoor clothing brand. The apparel brand is focused on consumers using their energy to create energy. Personal thermal management.

British brand RAB achieves super-lightweight down jackets with combining traditional down techniques with its unique TILT development - Thermo Ionic Lining Technology. It is a heat retaining lining that works like an emergency blanket reflecting heat back towards the body, maintaining breathability and comfort. TILT is a lining incorporating titanium that has been vaporized The result is a visible silver lining. Aluminum can be used on a mesh if this is to be an invisible lining, sat behind a basic lining.

THERMAL REGULATION DEVELOPMENTS

100% polyester heat back fabric with a metal micro bead print layer coating and metallic electroplated layer, generating FIR function. The material generates energy when the micro-beads are heated, they expand, trapping air and reducing heat loss. Silk powder is also added to the print, creating a ‘thermal energy barrier’ of the body. Additionally, this development could be used in different prints to add a style aspect to the lining.

Company: Anta

Contact: zhonggxin@anta.com www.anta.com

Nilit Innergy, a FIR nylon 6.6 yarn, which results in a higher level of fluidity and sensual touch. The performance is permanent, a mineral additive - as opposed to finishes as it is embedded in the yarn. Could be used as lining in a down jacket.

Ceramic nano particles create a micro-encapsulated yarn. The benefits of FIR is the heat reflected from the body is reflected back giving a sense of warmth and wellbeing. If it is used in lining, lighter down products can be used, yet still have a high level of warmth.

Company: Nilit Contact: michellel@nilit.com

Company: Sportingtex Contact: sundream@sportingtex.com

THERMAL REGULATION DEVELOPMENTS

Graphene is a material that is extracted from graphite and is made up of pure carbon, the additional benefit is that it is 200 times more resistant than steel and 5 times lighter than aluminum. Hong Li have used Graphene Polyamide , where the graphene is micro-encapsulated at the yarn extrusion process. The graphene releases FIR and provides a high level of thermal regulation and odor control. Graphene is also available in finishes.

Company: Hong Li Textile

gracehsueh@hongli.com.tw

Graphene based GUP fabrics consist of thermal insulating developments, utilizing heat via the body to the outer-shell. Environment and the human body create a heat barrier. An extremely effective heat conductor material with excellent absorption of FIR. The high tenacity and long-lasting fabrics due to the strength that graphene brings a sustainable aspect. Additional functions include odor neutralizing, UV protections and antibacterial. GrapheneUP supply a variety of graphene basedproducts including additives and coatings. They partner with companies to make tailor-made products. GUP can also be printed - on the outside of a garment to pull away heat - but it can also be used on the inside to generate and maintain heat.

Company: GrapheneUP

ISPO award-winning Sycotex offers 2 or 3 layer modified aerogel composite. Offering thermal regulation on a range of materials that is incredibly soft and workable - with no noise and no disruptive effect when worn in a garment. The potential here is big, in that Sycotex can be incorporated into the lining of down garments, reducing the bulk but maintaining the warmth. Modified nano particles and aerogel for PCM, washable and incredibly versatile.

Company: Sycoretec Contact: tracyduan2006@163.com www.sycoretec.com

Wool insulation is gaining interest in the European market due to its natural characteristics, being regenerative and part of the circular economy. HD Wool Insulation is viable because it is natural, thermal regulating, anti-odor, breathable and available in different weights - it would be interesting to team up wool insulation with down - as a natural and biodegradable option.
