»Walk on the wild Side« Le titre de La série Les notions de transgression et de danger sont implicitement liées à l’idée d’investir des friches et autres lieux urbains inhabituels. Ainsi le titre de la chanson »Walk on the wild side« me semblait correspondre le mieux à cette série, ayant le sentiment d’explorer d’une certaine manière le côté »sauvage« des modèles. De plus, cette chanson a pour moi une double valeur artistique. La version originale est chantée par Lou Reed, qui évoque pour moi la Factory d’Andy Warhol, et une reprise a été faite par le groupe hip-hop A Tribe Called Quest (dans le titre »Can I kick it ?«). Ces deux chansons synthétisent une partie de mes influences, de la »toile d’araignée warholienne« (son propre travail, le Velvet Underground, Basquiat ...) au hip-hop en passant par les arts urbains.

the series titLe e notions of infringement and danger are implicitly linked to the idea of occupying wastelands and others unusual urban places. at is why the title »Walk on the wild side« appeared to me as the best way to give the most significant image to this series, as i had the feeling i was exploring the »wild side« of the models. in addition, this song has a double artistic value to me. e original version is sung by Lou reed, that reminds me of the Warhol’s Factory. and there is also a cover by the hip hop band »tribe Called Quest« in its track called »Can i kick it«. ese two songs synthesize some of my influences, from the »Warholian spider’s web«, meaning his own work, e Velvet Underground’s, Basquiat’s, so on so forth, to hip hop music, and urban arts being all included.

intro “Mon parcours photographique a débuté en 2008 avec la série »Abstract Chaos«, témoignage (photo)graphique en noir et blanc de friches, lieux abandonnés et urbains. L’intention étant de récréer mon propre univers et d'en figer le temps, d’en souligner les traces et marques du passé.

La série »Walk on the wild side« trouve son origine directe dans la série »Abstract Chaos«.

J’ai voulu au départ intégrer les artistes de mon entourage (acteurs, écrivain, Djs ...) dans cet univers urbain (avec le même traitement d’image) afin de susciter de nouvelles perceptions de ces lieux et personnes. La vision apocalyptique se trouve alors légèrement chamboulée par la présence humaine, à chaque fois d'une seule et même personne. Et dans le même temps, le regard du modèle est différent de celui qu’on lui connaît, confronté à un décor qui sort de son ordinaire et à une atmosphère pesante, avec la sensation d'être toujours aux aguets. L’association de ces portraits forment un ensemble cohérent dans la création d’un univers post-apocalyptique, à la manière par exemple de cinéastes comme Luc Besson (»Le dernier combat«) ou Chris Marker (»La jetée«), ou bien encore des livres »La Route« (C. McCarthy) et »Je suis une légende« (R. Matheson).

Cette série, commencée en 2012, est très importante à mes yeux car c’est un challenge que je me suis imposé. Je n’avais jamais fait de portrait avant, et il m’a fallu sortir de ma zone de confort.

Cela m’a obligé à prendre ma démarche de photographe vraiment au sérieux, ne serait-ce que par respect pour les »modèles«, et restreindre ma fenêtre de liberté tout en restant dans mon style.”

“My photographic path started to map out in 2008 with the series »abstract Chaos«, a B&W »photographic« testimony dedicated to brownfield areas and urban wastelands only. My will was to recreate my own universe and to freeze time, to underline tracks and marks of the past in there. Concerning the series »Walk on the wild side«, it actually found its single starting point in the series »abstract Chaos«. at the beginning, i wanted to include my close friends and artists, like dJs, actors or writers, to this urban universe, but with the same imageprocessing techniques, in order to arise in me new perceptions about people and places. en, my apocalyptic vision started to slightly evolve, thanks to this human presence, the same one person each time. e reason why is that the model’s look is always different, different of what it is usually, as if it has to face a non-ordinary reality and heavy atmosphere, which brings the necessity for it to stand on guard. e combination of these portraits makes a coherent whole in the creation of a post-apocalyptic world, in the trend of filmmakers such as Luc Besson, e Last Battle, Chris Marker, e Jetty or novels like C. McCarthy, e road and r. Matheson’s i am Legend. is series started in 2012 and is still very important to me because it s a personal challenge. i had never done any portrait before, and i had to get out of my comfort zone. is allowed me to take my photographer’s carrer seriously in hands. i did it first for my model’s sake, and then, to refine my artistic freedom of creation, whilst being still me and my style ...”

Yann: »Alexis est un comédien très doué qui a joué dans deux de mes films. On a travaillé sur pas mal de projets ensemble.

Et comme une évidence, c’est lui qui est passé le premier devant mon objectif. Comme c’était mes premiers portraits, je ne savais pas trop à quoi m’attendre (de ma part surtout). Mais Alexis a été parfait, et je me suis éclaté sur cette première. Ça m’a donné beaucoup de confiance pour la suite.«

Yann: »J’étais franchement, mais franchement impressionné lors de ma rencontre avec Audrey.

Le basket est une part importante de ma vie, et Audrey a une carrière tellement énorme que j’étais très intimidé. En plus, ce shooting était un challenge.

Un ami graffeur m’avait conseillé un spot, mais arrivé sur le lieu je me suis rendu compte que ce n’était qu’un chemin sous un pont, pas vraiment de variété et de jeux graphiques possibles du coup. Après une petite période de flottement, tout s’est mis en place, on s’est libéré l’un et l’autre et le shooting est devenu beaucoup plus fluide, beaucoup plus naturel.«

Yann: »On se connaît depuis longtemps. D’abord parce que son père est un ami proche, et ensuite parce qu’on a travaillé dans le même établissement.

Quand on s’est un peu perdu de vue, elle a commencé à faire du théâtre puis est partie vivre à Londres. On restait malgré tout en contact via les réseaux sociaux. Et quand j’ai su qu’elle venait passer quelques jours en France, j’ai sauté sur l’occasion pour lui proposé ce shooting et la “redécouvrir” en tant que comédienne. Shooting très facile parce que Camille propose des choses, capte facilement l’ambiance, et il y a de la légèreté et de la détermination qui se dégagent d’elle et qui font un mélange très intéressant.«

Yann: »J’avais prévu un shooting avec son compagnon, qui m’avait proposé donc de venir avec Carole … qui était enceinte … Donc nous voilà sur le lieu de shooting, qui se limitait à des murs graffés, avec Carole qui ne semblait pas franchement à l’aise. Je me suis vraiment demandé comment j’allais m’en tirer. Comment une femme enceinte pouvait trouver sa place dans l’univers “Walk on the wild side” ? Questionnement stupide, parce que ça a très bien marché. j’aime beaucoup cette série. Carole semble sortir d’un film dans lequel elle incarnerait une femme, enceinte donc, en galère, qui sort d’un mauvais coup, mais qui va tout donner pour s’en sortir, avec un côté limite badass. Yann: »Bleu Nuit est non seulement une DJ, une amie, mais c’est aussi la première personne qui m’a fait confiance pour exposer. Autant dire que j’ai pour elle une reconnaissance sans faille, car elle est une des premières à m’avoir apporter de la légitimité.

Je ne pouvais pas faire ma série de portraits sans lui proposer. Je me rappelle qu’elle était très impressionnée par le lieu, presque troublée. Le shooting s’est fait sans problème, mais c’était évident : Bleu Nuit semble être sortie de la Factory. Avec son regard très intense et sa classe naturelle, un peu glam-rock et underground, elle n’aurait pas dépareillé entre Warhol, Edie Sedwick, Nico ...« 14/15

Yann: »Un artiste talentueux et complet!

Musicien connu et reconnu mais aussi un artiste plastique (peinture, sculpture, collage…) qui commence à faire son bonhomme de chemin.

Le genre de gars infaillible, doué pour tout (que c’est énervant…). On se connaît très bien et depuis très longtemps, donc le shooting était plutôt facile. En plus son look à la Heisenberg (Breaking Bad) et l’endroit dans lequel nous étions collaient totalement à mon univers. Je ne lui ai dit qu’après mais je me suis fait une petite frayeur ce jour-là. L’objectif de mon appareil est tombé HS pendant le shooting, j’ai “bricolé” pour la mise au point et fait ce que j’ai pu.

Il ne s’en est pas rendu compte, et j’ai vraiment eu peur que la séance ne tombe à l’eau ... Ça m’a vraiment fait plaisir de partager ce moment avec lui, parce que nous nous voyons peu désormais et c’est quelqu’un pour qui j’ai beaucoup d’estime.«

Endy »Across 110th street« Bobby Womack

Yann: »Endy est une basketteuse de talent, elle revenait à ce moment-là des JO avec une médaille d’argent gagnée avec l’Equipe de France. Elle était pendant le shooting très cool, très détendue, et très souriante. Tellement souriante que je me disais que ça ne marcherait pas, ça n’irait pas pour la série.

Mais j’ai tellement l’habitude de laisser une totale liberté que je n’osais pas lui demander de moins sourire. C’est délicat de dire aux gens qu’ils sont trop radieux ! Alors j’ai essayé de capter des moments plus furtifs, un peu de fragilité… J’ai finalement obtenu ce que je voulais. J’ai adoré le lieu, c’était aux Puces de Paris, un jour où tout était fermé. Ça faisait un peu village abandonné, une ambiance très western moderne.«

»Le sentiment étrange d'être à sa place dans le wild side ...«

Yann: »Nous nous connaissons depuis quelques années avec Guillaume, mais curieusement j’ai appris à le connaître sur le tard. C’est quelqu’un pour qui j’ai beaucoup d’admiration, il a beaucoup d’idées et se donne toujours les moyens d’aller au bout de ses projets. Ses convictions et ses valeurs en font une personne rare. Le shooting que nous avons fait ensemble était très sympa et très facile, Guillaume était très à l’écoute, très à l’aise.

En plus, malgré un manque de diversité dans le spot, j’ai pu me raccrocher aux graffs et aux flaques pour donner un peu de densité et de variété à l’image. Et comme il a la gueule de l’emploi et un regard très profond, le résultat ne pouvait qu’être à la hauteur de mes espérances!«

Yann: »J’ai eu la chance d’être publié il y a quelques années sur un site qui répertoriait de jeunes artistes. Par curiosité, j’ai parcouru les articles du site et suis tombé sur le travail photgraphique de Stef, dont l’univers, assez proche du mien, me parlait beaucoup.

Je voulais lui envoyer un mail pour lui dire tout le bien que j’en pensais, mais elle m’a devancé de quelques heures, chouette coïncidence ! Nous sommes restés en contact. Quand j’ai eu l’occasion de passer le week-end dans sa ville, elle m’a proposé de m’emmener dans une friche magnifique, et nous en avons profité pour faire cette série. Elle n’était franchement pas très à l’aise, mais c’est sans doute de ma faute, je n’ai pas trouvé les ficelles pour y remédier. De plus, le froid et le manque de lumière ne nous a pas aidés. Ce qui explique son air grave, qui ne correspond absolument pas à ce qu’elle est. Ce fut tout de même une belle rencontre, et cette série s’intègre bien à l’ensemble.«

JUst oUt oF CUriosity, i Went throUgh the artiCLes oF that site and i CaMe aCross steF's photographiC Work, Whose UniVerse, QUite identiCaL to Mine, toUChed Me a Lot. i Wanted to send her an e-MaiL to teLL her hoW MUCh i had appreCiated it, BUt she did it First, a FeW hoUrs BeFore Me ... niCe CoinCidenCe ! We kept in toUCh. Ce fut un plaisir de faire découvrir ce lieu à Yann et de pouvoir faire ce shooting en même temps. Un peu compliqué de ne pas sourire vu que j’ai toujours le sourire aux lèvres ...

Yann: »Louis est un basketteur professionnel, donc j’étais très heureux de le rencontrer (toujours mon amour indéfectible pour le basket…). C’est un gars très sympa, très cool, très drôle. On a passé pas mal de temps à discuter ensemble après, c’est quelqu’un de très accessible. On a parcouru les quartiers de Belleville et Ménilmontant à Paris pour ce shooting, ce qui m’a permis de découvrir quelques lieux du street-art que je ne connaissais pas encore à l’époque. J’ai revu la vidéo de ce shooting il n’y a pas longtemps, elle m’a rappelé l’ambiance qui régnait : tranquille et relax, à l’image de Louis!«

Yann: »Mai Lan est une illustratrice de talent, mais surtout c’est ma soeur, et ça ça pèse lourd dans la balance quand il s’agit de faire un shooting. J’avoue que, d’une certaine manière, ça met un peu la pression. Je pense que, inconsciemment, j’ai été peut-être plus attentif et moins instinctif que d’habitude. J’ai peut-être moins insisté sur le côté “wild side” par protection. Mais c’est une autoanalyse a posteriori dont je ne suis même pas convaincu … Toujours est-il que la série fonctionne, mais je n’en doutais pas.

Mai Lan est photogénique, moderne, elle a une grande culture de l’image, du coup elle a su se placer et avoir les bonnes attitudes pour que ça marche. Je crois que j’ai toujours un point de vue un peu cinématographique dans mes séries de portraits (déformation qui vient de mon passé de vidéaste), et je pense que c’est encore plus vrai pour celle-ci.«

Yann: »Un jour, je reçois un mail de Guillaume (que je ne connaissais pas) m’expliquant qu’il était lui-même photographe, fréquentait les mêmes spots que moi et me proposait qu’on parte se faire une virée photo ensemble.

Ce qu’on a fait, puis on a enchaîné plus tard avec ce shooting (et encore après avec quelques bières ...). On s’est rendu dans ce qui était je crois un ancien laboratoire pour cette série. C’était très bien comme cadre, il y a avait beaucoup d’ouvertures, de verres cassés, des choses très riches graphiquement parlant. C’est un peu déstabilisant de prendre en photo un autre photographe, et sur le moment je ne voulais pas me louper et passer pour un naze … Surtout qu’hormis quelques directions de regard, je laisse beaucoup de liberté et ne dirige pas beaucoup mes “modèles”, ce qui n’est pas vraiment une preuve de professionnalisme! Yann: »Olivier est DJ et musicien, je suis un grand fan de ce qu’il fait. On évolue ensemble depuis qu’on est ados. On a la même bande de potes, on a passé des week-ends entiers ensemble, et on a travaillé sur énormément de projets artistiques communs, qu’ils soient musicaux, vidéos, photographiques, transdisciplinaires …

On a la même culture, les mêmes influences, on a passé des heures à débattre de films, des heures à écouter du hip-hop, à aller aux mêmes concerts … Même si on évolue chacun de notre côté, je pense qu’on s’est beaucoup apporté mutuellement.

On se connaît tellement par coeur que le shooting s’en est forcément ressenti. Il sait ce que je veux, connaît mon style, je sais ce que je peux lui demander, ce qui va le mieux marcher avec lui. De toutes les séries, c’est une de mes préférées. Parce qu’elle a une ambiance urbaine très marquée, et elle représente pour moi une empreinte artistique commune.«

Yann: »On a grandit dans la même ville, on se connaît depuis longtemps. Et puis Rodolphe est un DJ hip-hop, on a pas mal de goûts musicaux communs, ça nous donne un bon sujet de conversation ! Pour le shooting, c’est lui qui a trouvé le lieu.

On y pénétrait lui et moi pour la première fois, et le truc qui m’a vraiment épaté, c’est la manière dont il s’est approprié le l’endroit. Malgré l’atmosphère un peu pesante, il y a évolué en toute décontraction, voir avec nonchalance. Ça a facilité le shooting, parce que parfois, il n’y a pas que le rapport avec le “modèle” à appréhender, mais aussi celui avec l’espace et l’environnement. J’aime particulièrement la photo avec les vinyls, parce qu’avec le reflet dans les lunettes, les écouteurs, l’ambiance... tout est là pour le représenter en tant que DJ et en tant que personne.«

»Lust for life« Iggy Pop

Yann: »Que dire sur Seb… 20 ans qu’on se connaît. On a beaucoup, beaucoup traîné ensemble. On a joué au basket, on est allé à des concerts, on a discuté, échangé, on a ri, on a pleuré, on s’est engueulé, on a fait la fête, on est parti en vacances ensemble… Autant dire que je peux lui demander n’importe quoi, il est partant. Il a proposé des choses qui marchent bien sur cette série (la baignoire, par exemple, dans laquelle il s’est mis instinctivement). C’est quelqu’un d’important dans le projet “Walk on the wild side”, parce qu’outre sa participation, il m’a mis en contact avec les personnes du basket qui sont passées devant l’objectif (Audrey, Endy et Louis), il a réalisé des clips et des photos de ces shootings, et il m’a toujours poussé à aller plus loin et à mettre en valeur ces séries. Je lui dois beaucoup.«

»D’abord le silence et la désolation. Sensation d’oppression. Le vent qui s’engouffre avec brutalité, le soleil qui se permet seulement quelques incursions. Puis, petit à petit, la rencontre avec des morceaux de vies. Certains d’une époque lointaine, d’autres plus contemporains. Ces morceaux de vies commencent à raconter des histoires. Et plus j’avance, plus j’ai l’impression de participer à celles-ci. D’écrire leurs suites. Le temps s’arrête … passé, présent, futur ne font plus qu’un … Le temps d’une photographie ...«

Yann: »Quelqu’un pour qui j’ai énormément d’affection. On a joué ensemble au basket quand on était étudiants, on a une tonne de souvenirs ensemble. Et puis la vie nous a éloignés, jusqu’à ce qu’on se croise par hasard, dans la rue. Entre temps il était devenu écrivain, moi photographe.

Je lui ai donc proposé ce shooting, ça donnait aussi l’occasion de passer un moment avec lui.

Rodolphe, c’est quelqu’un de plutôt jovial, et pour la série, il a bien joué le coup, avec un côté très cérébral, très introspectif. Avec un pote, on avait l’habitude de l’appeler le “Dude”, en référence au film “e Big Lebowski”.

Et je suis heureux de l’avoir retrouvé, ce “Dude”.

J’ai par la suite fait la photo de couverture d’un de ces bouquins, et je suis sûr qu’on n’a pas fini de collaborer tous les deux!« YANN: »he is soMeone For WhoM i haVe great aFFeCtion. Yann: »Je suis le travail de Visiographe depuis ses débuts, via les réseaux sociaux. Et j’ai toujours été un fan. Son univers est très marqué, il pousse ses traitements très loin, et j’aime beaucoup le fait qu’il assume pleinement ça.

Un jour, dans un magasin de vêtements, je croise ce grand gaillard (je l’ai reconnu car j’avais vu son visage sur le net) et l’interpelle aussitôt. On s’est rencontré comme ça et on s’est promis de faire des photos ensemble, ce qui s’est concrétisé par ce shooting. C’était marrant, il ne savait pas quelle attitude prendre, alors que lui-même est un photographe de portraits. C’est la première fois qu’il passait devant l’objectif, mais il a dû y prendre goût puisqu’il a enchaîné sur quelques séries en tant que modèle par la suite. Je me suis éclaté sur cette série. Outre la très bonne ambiance qui y régnait, nous étions dans un endroit très graphique, et je me suis bien amusé à l’”enfermer” dans les lignes, les ombres et les reflets, c’était très inspirant !«

“Walk on the wild side” n’est pas qu’une simple série photographique.

C’est aussi un condensé d’émotions, d’histoires, d’ambiances et d’atmosphères.

Ainsi, j’ai écrit sur chaque personne un texte qui relate notre rencontre, notre collaboration sur cette aventure.

Et j’ai associé à chaque série sa propre chanson (en titre des doubles-pages).

J’ai demandé aux participants de faire de même. Certains ont écrit quelques mots qui traduisaient leur ressenti, et/ou ont donc choisi une chanson. D’autres ont préféré laisser parler les photos, considérant qu’elles se suffisent à elles-mêmes.

Voici donc la playlist qui vous permettra de plonger totalement dans l’univers “Walk on the wild side”... (entre guillements, la personne qui a choisi la chanson)

“Walk on the wild side” is not just a photographic series. it is a pack of emotions, stories, moods and atmospheres. us, i wrote a text on each person to tell how we met and went together on this adventure. and each series is linked to its own song (in the double-pages’ titles). e participants were asked to do the same. some of them wrote a few words to express their feelings, and/or chose a song. others prefered to let the photos speak for themselves, considering they were self-sufficient. is is therefore the playlist so you can be entirely overwhelmed by the “Walk on the wild side” universe.

»Walk on the wild side. A Song, a Lifestyle and a philosophy as well. Despite its touching on taboo topics such as transexuality, drugs, male prostitution and oral sex. Like the song’s describing a series of individuals on their journey to New York City – Yanns’ series of Individuals in abandoned urban spaces, telling a story of friendship and relationships. A trip depending on their individual history. A walk on blurred lines. I confess: I like messy People. People who don’t fit in a Box or stay between the lines, but who’s Integrity is greater than any Rule Book and who’s Loyality is stronger than Blood. e Project: Walk on the wild Side brought me Strangers closer just of this intensity in Yanns’ photography. While creating the Pages, listening the Tracklist and reading the textes I felt like »Walk on the wild Side.« is Project is build on Trust and Friendship, the individual connection between the photographer and his »Models«.
