FROM THE

People Make

A COMMUNITY We are just a few weeks away from Broomfield’s next local election and campaigns are in full swing. Similar to the State of Colorado overall, political winds of change are blowing in Broomfield, as newer residents and population growth have driven diverse perspectives and ideas. As Broomfield’s community lifestyle magazine, here at The Broomfielder, we aim to be politically neutral. That said, throughout the history of the publication, we have always enjoyed a great collaboration with whoever currently sits at the Mayor’s desk. Since 2013, that has been Mayor Randy Ahrens. Randy is a son of Broomfield who has served the community in dozens of roles prior to and in parallel with being our Mayor for the past six years. He is one of the key figures who helped lead our community into the future as a City and County, and has been a driver our smart growth and development. And he is a sincere and genuine leader who fulfills his duties with integrity and passion for the best interests of our community. I have always enjoyed running into Randy at Broomfield’s various events, and having lovely exchanges with him and his dear wife Wendy. Even at the City level, being a civil servant in this role is far more demanding and taxing than I think any of us can imagine. But Randy was always present and accessible in every corner of our community. Randy performed his role with heart. I have just one small story to relay that conveys this. It was the morning after the 2015 City election. I was leaving Broomfield to drive to my office just after 6:00 a.m. on that Wednesday morning. I found myself behind a pick-up truck driving slowly southbound on Lowell Blvd. The driver pulled to the side and jumped out. It was Randy, gathering up his own campaign signs as the sun came up. I know that Randy performed countless tasks in his tenure far more important than this, but it is one that I will always remember, and I feel speaks volumes about the type of person and leader he is. Randy, thank you for your service! You can read a few words of reflection from Randy himself on page 22.

FISH Harvest of Hope

Helps Meet Needs of Thousands in Broomfield By Elle Powell, Junior Legacy High School

When was the last time you had to decide between feeding your family and paying the rent or mortgage? This is a dilemma that many people face. In the past year, Broomfield FISH served more than 6,000 unduplicated residents or nearly 10% of the population in Broomfield. With escalating housing prices, Broomfield FISH is not expecting those numbers to decrease any time soon. Broomfield FISH was founded as a non-profit organization in 1963, by a group of women from six local churches. The name stands for “Fellowship In Serving Humanity.” FISH’s original focus was solely to provide food to those in need. While FISH is still known as a food bank, it has expanded its services to also provide transportation assistance, rent and utility assistance, and other services to help families become financially stable and self-sufficient. As the needs of the community have expanded, FISH has responded. People may have a misconception about the clients of FISH, but FISH serves families from every neighborhood in Broomfield. As an example, a local family had rented a house in Broomfield for the last 20 years. They had no problem paying their rent as there were two steady incomes in the family. However, when housing costs increased $600 a month and the husband was furloughed, their income dropped significantly. The family was referred to FISH and received temporary rent assistance and food. They were so appreciative of the support that they have since begun donating and volunteering! FISH provides valuable services to the community and 92 cents of every dollar donated in the last year went to directly benefit our neighbors in need. In order to continue to support the community, FISH hosts an annual fundraising luncheon called Harvest of Hope. By attending Harvest

ou may ask, “What are the right types of food I should eat, and when is the best time for a meal?” And while there are many recommendations available, there really is no consensus on meal importance and timing. Some recent research has stated that skipping breakfast can be associated with cardiovascular complications. However, Dr. Pamela Vallejo-Craig, a primary care doctor who practices at St. Anthony North Health Campus doesn’t necessarily feel that breakfast is critical for all people. More important to her is the nutritional value and number of calories a person consumes. “Eating a nutritious breakfast with whole grains, legumes, vegetables and fruits may help people make better food choices throughout the day,” says Dr. Vallejo. “You should plan meals around vegetables, fruit, whole grains and sources of plant-based protein no matter what time of day you eat.” Dr. Vallejo shared an example that eating a hearty breakfast of tofu scramble with vegetables and greens or sprouted bread with nut butter and a piece of fruit helps keep you stay satisfied all morning and helps you resist the office break room box of donuts or bagels. However, she concedes that some patients aren’t hungry until later in the morning, and therefore they and shouldn’t “force” a meal but instead have a plan for a healthy meal when they do start to feeling hungry. The American Heart Association states there isn’t enough evidence to prove that changing the number of times we eat (three meals versus frequent snacks) has a significant impact on weight or cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors (blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar.). The key is what we choose to eat. Dr. Vallejo recommends to her patients that they pay attention to their body’s hunger signals and avoid eating just because others are eating. Planning meals and snacks for specific times can help manage hunger, which is called “intentional eating.” Eating within two hours of bed time does seem to increase CVD risk. People who work midnight shifts and eat during times most people are asleep tend to have higher blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Dr. Vallejo notes that interest has grown in “intermittent fasting” as a weight loss strategy and as a way to improve overall health. This approach can decrease total calorie intake, which decreases cardiovascular and diabetes risk. There are several different intermittent fasting strategies, but most involve limiting meals and snacks to an 8-10 hour timeframe throughout the day. “I recommend a whole food plant-based diet to all my patients,” Dr. Vallejo stated. “When eating in this fashion, there’s no need for calorie counting. Weight loss, decrease in blood pressure, and improvement of diabetic control will happen naturally.” She acknowledged that WW (formerly Weight Watchers) now uses the idea of “zero point foods” that do not have to be counted toward daily point allowance. These zero point foods are vegetables, fruits, legumes and lean protein (like tofu), and WW research has shown that people do not overeat these foods and will stop eating when satiated, still attaining their weight loss goal.

Fonda Buckles

Senior Services Manager for the City and County of Broomfield

Fonda Aims to Create Family Environment FOR BROOMFIELD’S SENIORS By Megan Eichner

Fonda Buckles is the Senior Services Manager for the City and County of Broomfield. She began her current position in May, 2018, but has spent the majority of her career working in Human Services. Part of that time was spent working for Broomfield Health and all ages and abilities. Her daily duties are focused around the Human Services in the Children and Family Services department. programs that Senior Services runs in order to provide for the From that experience, she said she learned that, “I especially loved daily needs of members of our community. Easy Ride transportation. This is a grant-funded transportation program that serves adults who are 60 years of age or older as well as adults with disabilities. The Easy Ride program serves Broomfield residents in need by providing approximately 100 trips each day. Besides these major programs, the Senior Center also offers educational classes, support groups, volunteer opportunities, assistance with special circumstances and resources, active adult trips, drop-in activities, and Caregiver Respite. Fonda strives to make sure the programs provided by Broomfield Senior Services are meeting the needs of the aging adults in our community. She said, “We want to create a fun place where aging adults can come and enjoy and participate in a multitude of programs.” The success of the daily programs depends on the dedicated work of the volunteers who cook and deliver meals, and drive to provide rides. Fonda is extremely proud of the volunteer force that allows the Broomfield Senior Center to take care of our elderly community members. One of her goals is to increase volunteer participation so that the outreach programs can be expanded to help more people. Some of Fonda’s best experiences as the Senior Services Manager are simply enjoying daily conversations with the people who come in to have lunch through the Lakeshore Cafe program. She finds it to be a great opportunity to get immediate feedback that influences improvements to the programs and services that her department provides. She is also able to make new and meaningful relationships each week. Fonda makes this all possible by creating an atmosphere where community members can feel like they are “part of a very big family.” Her team is also able to make their services feel welcoming by making them more accessible through education. The monthly outreach group provides information to aging adults about all of the services offered throughout the city and county. Through this initiative, she says they have been able to educate and serve many adults who otherwise would have gone without assistance, sometimes for basic needs. Broomfield

Brews By Elizabeth Buckingham

In the past two decades, American beer has enjoyed a renaissance that changed brewing forever. Rather than bland, tasteless, mass-market beers, we now have an incredible selection of locally-crafted microbrews available at just about every pub and liquor store.

THE BROOMFIELDER™ OCTOBER 2019

B

eer is made from four basic ingredients: water, grains, hops, and yeast. The basic idea is to extract sugar from the grains (usually barley, although other grains can be used) to create alcohol and carbon dioxide. The grains are first malted to prepare the starches, then steeped in hot water to produce a sweet liquid known as wort. The wort is boiled, and hops are sometimes (although not always) added. Hops are what give beer bitterness, and add other flavors and aromas, too. When the mixture has finished boiling, yeast is added; the yeast consumes the sugars remaining in the grains, and in exchange creates carbon dioxide and alcohol, giving the finished product carbonation. Beer has been made in roughly the same way for 10,000 years, although modern brewers have a great deal of creative license in their combinations of malts, hops, and yeasts, as well as fruit or other plant extracts. If you’re new to beer, never fear! Head to your local brewery and order a tasting flight, which is simply a line-up of small tastes of different beers. This is the best way to learn about your own taste preferences and figure out what you do and don’t like, as well as that particular brewery’s specialties. Most Americans start out drinking light lagers, but there’s so much more to enjoy. From cask-conditioned ales to piney, floral IPAs to dark, rich stouts, there is a beer for every place and time. Brewers are passionate about what they do, and are keen to help people enjoy beer, so don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Curious to learn more? Here are two great places to try local beer in Broomfield:

Wonderland Brewing

4 Noses Brewing

8855 W. 116th Cir. 720-460-2797 www.4nosesbrewing.com

Wonderland has a big, four-acre property with amazing outdoor spaces where you can enjoy drinks with friends. They’re also known for their incredible pinball collection! Head brewer Joshua Willett believes that “every person who comes through the door can find something to enjoy in here.” If you’re not a huge fan of overly bitter beers, Willett recommends trying sour beers, which offer a delicious drinking experience without the overwhelming hoppy bitterness that so many find off-putting. Because Wonderland is small, they have the luxury of experimentation and are constantly changing their brews to suit the seasons and their guests’ diverse tastes. Joshua believes that people should approach beer as they do food. “You don’t eat the exact same thing every single day, so why would you drink the exact same thing? Our job as brewers is to express the unique characteristics of the quality ingredients we’re using, not mask them. We want to make the very best beverages we can, and we aim to make something for everyone. Just talk to us – we’ll help you figure out what you like.”

Casey LeFever, front-of-house and HR director at 4 Noses Brewing - and a Broomfield native! - shares what makes 4 Noses unique: “One thing we’ve always done is to develop new beers that excite us. You’ll notice we make several different IPAs, which are certainly popular with our customers. We also make many beers with a variety of fruits, always utilizing actual fruit, never extracts or syrups. Lately, we’ve been diving more into traditional lagers, which go down easy on hot days and require strong technical skill from our brew team.” If you want to know how to taste beer like a professional, Casey’s got you covered: “There’s no wrong way to drink beer, that’s for sure! However, to fully immerse ourselves in a beer, we do follow a few steps. The first is to smell the beer. Start by swirling it to release subtle aromas, and then take two quick sniffs, followed by a longer one with your mouth open. Then the fun part: drinking! Take small sips, and be sure to coat your mouth with the beer, taking note of all the flavors. While the beer is still in your mouth, exhale through your nose. That said, there’s nothing wrong with throwing all of that to the wind and drinking it however you please.”

We’ll raise a glass to that! Visit us online at: www.TheBroomfielder.com

REFLECTIONS REFLECTIONS FROM RANDY By Broomfield Mayor Randy Ahrens

As I look back over my six years as Broomfield’s Mayor, I reflect on what a privilege it has been. I was fortunate to work with an enthusiastic staff to bring the community new events and resources, and protect the existing resources we hold so dear.

B

roomfield city staff created Volunteer Day, dedicated to humanitarian and Broomfielder Cody Oser, to thank our everyday people who give unselfishly to our community. The Open Space & Trails staff implemented our Summer Passport to encourage the health of our citizens. Spring Cleanup, developed by Cathy Schnoor, Broomfield staffer, and John Abboud of the Broomfield Rotary Club, is now a highly anticipated event. I had the pleasure of working with our philanthropic entities like Chris Marchioni of Healthy Learning Paths and the Frank Shorter RACE4Kids’ Health. I worked with Dayna Scott to repurpose an older city building to house the FISH food bank and other non-profits, also the passionate Emily Crouse Joo on events for FISH. The Broomfield Veterans Museum has expanded, fulfilling the dreams of men like Lew Moir, Paul Murphy, and John Atkinson, to become a showpiece within our town. One of the highlights of every year as mayor has been teeing-off for the Rotary golf tournament to benefit our first responders. Thank you former Chiefs Tom Deland and John O’Hayre for your exceptional service. Regional transportation efforts involved vigorous work over my tenure, and I am delighted the North Metro Rail Line will commence next year. I formed the Hwy 7 Coalition, and we now have plans to improve roadways from conception rather than reacting to problems. Finally, city council passed a $40 million bond to fund the 144th Avenue expansion. I also formed many business relationships like the one with Garret Baum that brought us Children’s Hospital. Tim & Jordan Weins continue their creative Arista development, and let’s not forget Jack Terhar and Shane Gilmore for being lifelong role models in working with our community. Furthermore, Sam Taylor brought positive energy to our Broomfield Chamber and convinced me to have two memberships, both for the city and my personal business. The past few years brought the difficulty of horizontal drilling to our town. But I’m so thankful for the 18-member oil and gas task force that worked diligently for almost two years to bring us a workable plan. They reduced the number of well pads from 42 to six, removed tanks, and allowed for oil and gas to be transported seven feet underground via pipe. This will reduce annual VOC emissions substantially. Our plan has been copied numerous times and has set the current standards. There is still more that can be completed under Senate Bill 181, and the new city council will have an opportunity to expand upon what has already been achieved. In my last term as Mayor, one of my goals was to work with Pat Tennyson

22

THE BROOMFIELDER™ OCTOBER 2019

and his board to bring the renowned Butterfly Pavilion to reside in our city. It will be part of Charles Ozaki’s dream of Science City and will also house a K-20 STEM school, a tremendous benefit to our Broomfield youth. Of course, my number one companion, Wendy, has been by my side throughout, and I greatly appreciate her sacrifice. Thanks to the residents of Broomfield for electing me and trusting that together we could move forward and create an even stronger, future-facing city. My plans at the conclusion of my service as mayor include spending lots of time spoiling our new grandchildren, Gabriela Danielle, Lonnie Gene, and Maranda Jane.

Broomfield Readers Explore

Addiction, Recovery, and Wellness Through One Book One Broomfield Selection By Kristen Beckman

This fall, readers across Broomfield will take a deep dive into a heartbreaking story about addiction and the impact it has on families. “Beautiful Boy,” Journalist David Sheff’s memoir about his son’s struggle with substance abuse, is this year’s One Book One Broomfield book selection.

24

THE BROOMFIELDER™ OCTOBER 2019

T

he book was chosen by a committee made up of community members who read and discuss multiple titles and vote on their favorite each year. Sheff describes his family’s story as unique but universal. His son, Nic, became addicted to crystal meth as a teenager and Sheff dedicated all of his time and skills as a journalist to researching and understanding Nic’s struggle, trying to save his life, and eventually to sharing the story with the world in an attempt to help others. It was during those dark days that Sheff wondered what had happened to his beautiful boy, to his family, and what he had done wrong as a parent. Nic had been a joyful child, an honors student, and a varsity athlete before meth turned him into a liar and thief who lived on the streets. The book, published in 2008, was named the best nonfiction book of the year in 2009 by Entertainment Weekly, and Sheff was named one of Time magazine’s most influential people. Nic Sheff also wrote a memoir called “Tweak: Growing Up on Methamphetamines.” The best-selling memoirs by father and son were made into a movie last year starring Steve Carrell and Timothée Chalamet. Community members and readers are invited to meet David Sheff during an author talk and book signing November 8 at the Broomfield Auditorium. Tickets are available on B-REx. “Beautiful Boy” had been checked out 268 times in various formats through the Broomfield Library as of September 1, according to Esther Knox-Stutsman, Programming Supervisor for the Broomfield Library. Last year’s book was checked out 534 times by November’s author talk, which 225 people attended, she said. “One Book One Broomfield is an exciting opportunity for the community to connect over the shared experience of reading and discussing a great book and attending events together,” said Knox-Stutsman. “This year is particularly important because substance abuse is an issue that Broomfield and so many other communities are facing; Mr. Sheff’s book creates an opportunity for Broomfield to engage with this issue together as a community.” The One Book One Broomfield program started in 2006 with “The Meadow” by James Galvin. The program is designed to bring individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and values together as a community through a series of shared experiences inspired by a common story. Other titles have included “Lucky Boy” by Shanthi Sekaran, “Dark Matter” by Blake Crouch, and “Grandma Gatewood’s Walk” by Ben Montgomery.

The library also has other events planned, some in conjunction with other city departments, to enrich readers’ experience with the book and to explore topics around addiction, mental health and physical wellbeing. • October 5, 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Community Park: Broomfield Recreation will host a free workout designed to highlight the importance of a healthy body as part of a healthy mind. • October 6, 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Broomfield Library: Participants are invited to practice skills to increase mental health balance and provide effective tools to cope with difficult aspects of life. • October 11, 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Broomfield Auditorium: the community is invited to a screening of the “Beautiful Boy” movie. • October 13 and 26, 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Broomfield Library: Local artists will be on hand to guide a community art project. • October 14, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Broomfield Library: Learn how all drugs are similar and how they mimic the brain’s natural processes during a session titled “The Weird Freaky Brain Science of Drugs.” • October 21, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Broomfield Library: Experts will present on the stigma of addiction and resources available, followed by panelists sharing their personal experiences. • November 7, 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Broomfield Library: Readers are invited to a book discussion.

Community Invited to Choose Favorite

Art for Awhile Sculptures T

hey are made primarily of metal – bronze, aluminum, and stainless steel shaped and formed with a vision to convey emotion, movement, and life. One a bronze sculpture of two women walking happily arm in arm in friendship, another a geometric see-through heart with soft curves created by sharp angles, and yet another, a metal form that outlines space in the shape of a cowboy working his lasso. These are this year’s submissions for Broomfield’s Art for Awhile program, which accepts sculptures on loan from artists across the country and displays them around the community for a year. Broomfield’s Public Art Committee received more than 50 entries this year and selected the final eight via a jury process, said Cheryl German, Cultural Affairs Operations Coordinator. The chosen sculptures are on display until February 2020 in front of the 1STBANK Center, behind the Broomfield Library in Community Park, and in the garden of the North Metro Fire District Headquarters. This year, the committee is asking residents and visitors to vote for their favorite sculpture through a contest that will give three $1,000 awards to the sculptors who receive the most votes in three categories. The Broomfield’s Choice award will recognize the community’s favorite sculpture; the Children’s Choice award will recognize the favorite sculpture of voters under the age of 18; and the Media Award is a story on Broomfield’s Instagram feed where visitors can like their favorite sculpture. Ballots are available online at www. broomfieldpublicart.com as well as at several city locations and will be available at Broomfield Days. Voting ends November 1. Art for Awhile was created by the Public Art Committee and approved by the Broomfield City Council in 2009. The goal of the program is to provide increased public exposure for artists as well as an opportunity to sell their work while strengthening community identity and enhancing community pride for people who live and work in the City and County of Broomfield. The city has purchased 11 sculptures from the Art for Awhile program and is committed to expanding its permanent art collection.

By Kristen Beckman

The year's sculptures include: • Dropsy, by Ted Schaal, a polished stainless-steel orb surrounded by bronze panels inspired by the idea of pressure building between two walls. • Lucky Ducks, by Marianne Caroselli, a sweet life-sized and lifelike bronze sculpture of a young boy happily feeding ducks. • High Five, by Christine Knapp, a whimsical black bear made of bronze offering a friendly interaction with visitors. • Happy Dance, by Richard Pankratz, a bronze statue of two women walking arm in arm and enjoying a moment of friendship and happiness. • Storming West, by Justin Deister, a tall, cloud-capped structure designed to elevate awareness of our natural resources. • Discobolos, by Matt Babcock, a riff on the classical Greek discus thrower by Myron, which captures the energy contained in the twisted form of the athlete just before the throw. • Frontier: Catch, by Kimmerjae Macarus, a cowboy and his lasso created out of open space. • Low Poly Heart, by Matthew Duffy, an angular yet soft red and silver heart that allows the viewer to contemplate the inside and outside as well as the texture and form of the sculpture.

Estate planning is more than avoiding probate and saving taxes. A properly designed estate plan can also protect your family. Most of these protections are ignored in form driven estate plans. For example…. When Bill and Jane first learned of his illness they sought legal advice. The first lawyer they spoke with said they did not need estate planning. He told them to put everything in joint tenancy because, “it is simple and avoids probate.” They weren’t comfortable with that advice, and sought guidance from a counselingoriented attorney who learned more about them, their estate, and their goals. Bill’s primary goal was to protect Jane after he died. Under Bill’s plan; their savings, his life insurance, and the home would be put in trust. This would protect the assets from a potential predator and help protect Jane’s assets as well After Bill's death, Jane began some volunteer work to keep her mind off her loss. She met new people, including David. They connected immediately, and she soon found herself head over heels in love. He proposed and she accepted. Her family noticed that his focus suddenly turned toward a keen interest in her finances. Blindly in love, she did not. Bill’s plan left his assets in trust for Jane. A requirement of receiving benefits was that she have a prenuptial agreement protecting her assets upon remarriage. While the assets Bill left her were protected, she needed to take action to protect her own assets. David was enraged when she told him that she was required to have a prenuptial agreement preserving the assets for her children. Realizing that half of the assets were held in trust, and that a prenup would prevent him from receiving the balance upon her death, David lost interest in Jane. While Jane was sad, she also felt comforted that Bill was still protecting her even after his death.

Broomfield Takes Action to Educate and Inform Youth About

DANGERS OF VAPING By Tina Eichner

The rise in popularity of vaping devices and electronic cigarettes can absolutely be described as meteoric with millions upon millions of American users since the phenomenon first came about in the mid2000s. Like tobacco before it, diet pills, and even cell phones, new modern discoveries that are ingested or somehow “used” by our bodies, sometimes don’t reveal their true effects until after the passage of time.

T

his seems to be the case with vaping, with mysterious cases of lung disease and even death hitting the national headlines by the day, each with a supposed connection to this smoking alternative. As the Center for Disease Control and other research and medical organizations search for answers, it is difficult to not notice the proliferation of vaping right around us, especially with younger people. Colorado leads the nation in youth use of vapor products, with 27 percent of teens currently vaping. In Broomfield and Boulder counties, 36 percent of teens report vaping. Broomfield Public Health and Environment staff have partnered with schools and youth-serving organizations to educate the community about the risks of vaping. Encouraging teens to say “YES,” to better health. In one effort to combat the situation in Broomfield, early last summer the City of Broomfield held a “Hand It In” event, encouraging Broomfield residents 18-years-old and younger to hand in their

vaping device in exchange for a free three-month Paul Derda Recreation Pass with no questions and no judgment. According to Alison Harvey, Senior Strategy Officer for Public Health at Broomfield’s Health and Human Services Department, 17 youth came to the event and were given recreation passes in exchange for their vaping devices. Participants were also offered information on how to quit vaping. Harvey said similar educational efforts are being considered as well as several direct outreach strategies. “Broomfield Public Health and Environment works jointly with Boulder County Public Health and Tri-County Health Department to serve Broomfield schools,” said Harvey. “Public health staff from these agencies have been talking with parents about vaping and its potential harms at PTO meetings, back-to-school information nights, and wellness events. We provide tips on how to talk to children about vaping, and direct parents to resources such as broomfield. org/vapefacts, speaknowcolorado.org, and tobaccofreeco.org.” She added, “In addition to educating parents, Public Health and Environment staff have been meeting with school administrators, counselors and nursing staff to share evidence-based prevention and cessation tools. Broomfield Public Health and Environment is also educating and raising awareness in the community by running ads in movie theatres, on bus shelters, and through social media directed at parents, caregivers, and youth.” In response to the recent outbreak of lung-related illness, The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE, the state health department) issued health alerts on August 30, describing reports of severe pulmonary illnesses being potentially related to vaping. CDPHE said, “The best way to protect yourself against vaping-related illness is to stop vaping. While this investigation is ongoing and the definitive cause of reported illnesses remains uncertain, people should consider not using vaping products. People who vape and have experienced sudden and severe lung problems should contact their doctor or local public health agency. People who vape should be aware that this illness is occurring and be on the lookout for symptoms: shortness of breath or trouble breathing, chest pain, cough, fatigue, and possible fever. Parents should talk to their kids, especially teens, about the risks and dangers of vaping. Free resources are available to help parents talk to their kids at tobaccofreeco.org.” Harvey explained how more specific actions are being looked at in Broomfield. “Changing local laws and policies is another effective way to reduce youth access to vape products. Broomfield Public Health and Environment presented a number of evidence based policy options at a Broomfield City Council study session in August. In response, City Council requested ordinances to be drafted that would require Broomfield retailers to secure a license to sell tobacco/vape products, raise the legal minimum sales age to 21 years, and expand Broomfield’s smoke-free ordinance to include prohibiting vaping in public places,” she said. The first reading for the proposed ordinances was planned for late September.

A Creative Twist on

Halloween Carvings By Family Features

When it comes to Halloween, carving the same pumpkin designs each year can become routine. This year, save a pumpkin and carve your spooky masterpiece into a watermelon instead.

To get started, consider these carving tips and tricks:

N

• Cut a small, thin, flat piece from the bottom of the watermelon to provide a stable base for carving.

utrient-rich watermelon can be a healthy alternative to other sweet treats full of added sugar during Halloween festivities as it’s a source of vitamins A and C as well as the antioxidant lycopene and the amino acid citrulline. Because they are made up of 92% water, watermelons can be an effective way to stay hydrated during trick-or-treating, and creations like a Mummy or Jack O’Melon can help satisfy sweet cravings while keeping friends and family members frightfully delighted. THE BROOMFIELDER™ OCTOBER 2019

• To make cutting and slicing easier, the watermelon should be at room temperate when carving.

• Draw the design on the watermelon rind with a dry-erase marker before cutting. If you make a mistake, this can make it easier to wipe off. • Use a sharp knife with a pointed tip for easier, cleaner cuts. Consider a paring knife with a smaller tip for ease of detail. • Blend scraps of watermelon that are too messy for dicing or slicing to create an easy juice.

Directions: 1. Wash watermelon under cool running water and pat dry. 2. On cutting board, place watermelon on its side and use kitchen knife to cut off 1/4-1/2-inch of rind from bottom to provide sturdy base, being careful not to cut too deep into white part of rind. Cut 1-2 inches from stem end to create opening for bowl to be added. 3. Using dry-erase marker, draw eyes, nose and mouth, along with wavy slits around carving. Use paring knife to cut them out, being sure to cut through to red flesh to let more light flow through. 4. Use melon baller to hollow out inside of watermelon. Reserve watermelon balls. Use scoop to remove remaining watermelon. 5. Using vegetable peeler, remove green skin off outside of watermelon, similar to peeling cucumber. 6. Wrap thin strips cheesecloth or gauze around mummy carving and secure with straight pin, if needed. 7. Place battery-operated candle or light inside carving and fit small bowl into top of carving. Trim away excess rind to make bowl fit securely. 8. Fill bowl with melon balls. Attach candy eyes or blueberries using a toothpicks, pins or glue.

Knife Round watermelon Melon baller Dry-erase marker Toothpicks (optional) Battery-operated light

Directions: 1. Using knife, cut thin slice from bottom of watermelon to provide stable base. 2. Cut circular piece of rind from top of watermelon big enough to reach into and remove flesh. Carefully remove top section and reserve for use as “lid.” 3. Remove flesh from inside watermelon using melon baller, reserving melon balls for snacking. Hollow out remaining watermelon flesh and use blender to juice scraps and excess juice. 4. Using dry-erase marker, draw outlines of eyes, nose, mouth, hair, ears and other features on side of watermelon. If mistake is made with marker, wipe off using paper towel to start over. Following outlines, carve features into watermelon and remove excess rind. 5. Safe, battery-operated light can be firmly placed inside watermelon to provide haunting glow. 6. Place circular piece of rind back on top of watermelon. Visit us online at: www.TheBroomfielder.com
