W

DEFINES US

hen someone asks to learn about you, how do you describe yourself? I would describe myself first based on my roles in life – who I am to other people. I am a wife and mother. I am a daughter and sister. I am an aunt and friend. Second, based on things that I do. I am a communications professional. I am a writer and an editor. I am a cook and a dancer. But I would also describe myself based on where I am in the world because the significance of environment and location cannot be overlooked. I am an American (of Italian descent). I am a native Coloradoan. I am a nearly native Broomfielder (having lived here since I was one year old). I am a Broomfielder. For nearly nine years you have read my musings about that very topic on this page. I have shared my history in this place. How my grandfather was part of the initial business community here in the 1960s, the people he knew and the Broomfield he played a small part in shaping. I have shared nostalgia that has been passed down through my family and stories from my own experiences through nearly 50 years in this community. I have written about my daughters and our Broomfield life. I have shared about my pets – because goodness knows, Broomfield loves its pets! And occasionally I have asked for your indulgence with my sentimental and sometimes philosophical musings about the world we live in – very often centered on this place. Broomfield. I guess this is one of those columns. I am a Broomfielder. And here is what that means. I am a Broomfield High School Eagle – forever! And a Colt and a Viking and Falcon too (a little school mascot test for you there)! I am the proud wife of an Aspen Creek teacher. I am a parishioner at Nativity of Our Lord. I am a supporter of Bal Swan Children’s Center, Dance Arts Studio, the Broomfield Community Foundation, Senior Resources of Broomfield, Broomfield FISH, and many other vital local organizations. I am a friend and neighbor to countless other residents, many of whom I have known my entire life. Loudmouth Media has recently changed hands and there are some changes coming under the new ownership. While the magazine will continue, one of those changes is that this is my last issue as editor. It has been one of the greatest honors of my life to connect the people of Broomfield and share stories in these pages. Rest assured, there are still several pens in my pencil bag. I am not done writing and Broomfield is still my place. You will see me at the grocery store and at church and walking our parks and trails. You will see me at events near and dear to my heart. And you will “hear” me. There are a lot of words left in this old girl, and well, many of them are purely Broomfield. Please reach out to me anytime, tinaeichner@comcast.net, and thanks for the love and thanks for reading,

THE BROOMFIELDER™ NOVEMBER 2019

T

his Thanksgiving, as you sit around the dinner table with family, you’ll likely notice shared characteristics – a similar nose, same hair color, the way you hold your knife and fork. Beyond the obvious similarities, it’s also important to recognize those tied to our genetics – because these traits drive our health and wellbeing. Tim Howard experienced the connection between heart health and family in a very jarring fashion when an emergency room physician at Avista Adventist Hospital shared the news; his left anterior descending artery was blocked, and he was experiencing a massive heart attack. “Having a family history of heart disease, I knew I might be at higher risk, but I was extremely fit and watched my diet,” Howard recalled. Data published in the New England Journal of Medicine suggests having unlucky genetics can double your risk for heart disease. “Heart disease risk factors like cholesterol and type two diabetes often run in families, and both impact the cardiovascular system in a significant way,” said cardiologist Dr. Norman Gray, a physician with Colorado Heart and Vascular which services both Avista and sister hospital St. Anthony North. “If heart disease runs in the family, your primary care doctor will likely send you to somebody like me, and you should insist on a specialist any time heart disease has presented itself in your parents before the age of 60.” Cardiologists, like Dr. Gray, have many tools in their arsenal for investigating looming problems. “Beyond your annual cholesterol and blood pressure check, I can do additional lab work, scans, and clinical procedures that help identify potential problems early on, and then we treat to reduce risk.” When collecting family history, it should span three generations, and comprise children, siblings, parents, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, grandparents, and cousins. For any reports of disease, you’ll want to note the age your relative first experienced issues. The Surgeon General has declared Thanksgiving to be National Family History Day, and it’s created a helpful web-based application to make gathering and storing the data as simple as possible. While you’ve got family together in one place this holiday, consider starting the conversation – because knowing your health history can help you avoid both heart disease and stroke – the No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death in America. Back to Tim Howard, within one year of having his almost always fatal widowmaker heart attack, post-surgery, and after cardiac rehab, he went on to compete in the Boulder Ironman triathlon – an amazing accomplishment. “IRONMAN training saved my life; it’s important to be fit. However, I’ve also learned fitness, and overall health are two different things. Family history doesn’t have to be limiting but utilizing that knowledge to get intervention and support is critical to wellbeing,” Howard concluded. RE COG NI Z I NG

Angels in Broomfield In the September and October issues we asked readers to share a few words about a special person who …. selflessly gives to the community … is committed to a cause or organization … helps others in the neighborhood … simply makes their own corner of the world a better place, or … inspires with their generosity of time, treasure or talent. We were looking for those quiet, unsung local angels who embody giving and deserve a round of thanks. Thank you to everyone who shared appreciation for a special friend and thank you to our Angels! You make Broomfield a better place for all of us!

Gloria Stephens

Dotti Moyer

I would like to nominate my neighbor Gloria Stephens as my angel. Gloria has always been a good neighbor but the last six weeks she has really been my angel. I had heart surgery in August and am just now getting back on my feet. During this time she has come over every day (in addition to taking care of her own flowers) to take care of my flowers and every once in a while she includes a burrito too. She has definitely been my angel. Nominated by Kay Davis

Dotti founded the Women’s Gathering nine years ago with philosophy “We are One in Community” and in giving hope to the least among us. It consists of women who knit, crochet or sew. They make afghans, hats, scarves, slipper socks, chemo hats, pillow cases, and mats for the homeless. Currently the group serves Pine Ridge Reservation, A Precious Child, Title One schools in the Broomfield area as well as cancer treatment centers from Longmont to Lakewood, military in Afghanistan, the Boulder Jail and the homeless. Nominated by Elaine Robledo

Nicole Hugo Nicole is a Broomfield Angel who makes life better for animals. She solicits donations of food and other needed items for rescue animals, including farm animals. She picks up 100s of pumpkins, food, and other animal necessities, and delivers to pet and farm shelters. She supports prairie dogs survival, helping to trap them for relocation. She is a dedicated animal champion! Nominated by Dottie Rawsky

THE BROOMFIELDER™ NOVEMBER 2019

Jade Glaister Volunteering is Jade’s favorite activity. Every day, she tutors friends, leads classmates, and encourages teammates. Early in the morning, she picks up trash in the high school parking lot. At lunchtime, she collects recycling items. Every other week, she is part of Broomfield Teen Council. Every month, she helps out at the rabbit shelter. Nominated by Sunnie Glaister

Bryan Decker Bryan operates the North Denver Cares Food Pantry in Broomfield and has been an angel in my life for over a year now. Without Bryan and the food pantry, I don’t know how I would be able to continue living in Broomfield as a single mom with two girls. 80% of my income goes directly to rent. Bryan is a hard working man usually at the pantry before the sun even rises, to make sure no one in Broomfield goes hungry. Due to Bryan’s commitment to families, he goes out of his way to make sure that his pantry is stocked with healthy, nutritious foods that I would otherwise, never be able to afford. Every week when I return from the pantry, my two daughters light up like they do on Christmas morning. Broomfield is truly blessed to have Bryan and this pantry in Broomfield. Nominated by Sarah Rowe

Evelyn from Evie’s Helping Hands I would like to nominate Evelyn who has been a wonderful help to me in caring (laundry, cleaning, dr. appointments, etc.) for my 90-year-old mother Louise W. at Highland Trail in Broomfield. She has amazing patience and generosity when it comes to seniors and I can’t thank her enough for all she does. She helps these seniors, some of which are very low income like my mom, regardless of ability to pay. She has a wonderful, caring, and loving personality and I am so grateful to her for her outstanding care. Nominated by Wendy McMahon

Protect Your Estate! (PART 6 OF 6) Avoid Probate  Reduce Taxes  Feel Secure

Plans That Work. People Who Care.

The Truth About Estate Planning™ Workshop

Bill and Jane thought they did not need estate planning. Their friends said “just put everything in joint tenancy, because it is simple and avoids probate.” Thinking about their disabled daughter, they sought guidance from a counseling-oriented attorney who took time to learn more about them, their estate, and their goals. Their primary objective was to protect their daughter after they died. The attorney worked with them to put together a plan that places their savings, life insurance, and home in a trust for their daughter, following their deaths. This prevents their daughter from being disqualified from the benefits she is receiving from government programs when she receives her inheritance. As a result, the inheritance can pay for things the government programs do not cover, providing additional comfort to their daughter.

Come and learn about your planning options, including costs, without obligation. You’ll also learn how you can create a plan tailored to your needs by working with people who know you personally and truly care about you and your family. Workshop dates are listed below. Space is limited, and reservations are required, so call to make your reservation today. Workshops may not be held in our offices.

Estate planning can and should be more than avoiding probate and saving taxes. A properly designed estate plan can provide many additional advantages and protections for your family. Most of these protections are ignored in cookiecutter, form driven estate plans. You should explore all of the benefits that a properly designed estate plan can provide to you while you are alive, and provide to your spouse and your family after your death

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 13TH AT 6:30PM  BRIGHTON THURSDAY, DECEMBER 12TH AT 1:00PM  WESTMINSTER

If you would like to learn more about an effective estate planning process that is producing results for families, attend one of our complementary workshops.

Bill and Jane’s family had struggled since the accident. Their daughter was only 13 when it happened, but it was clear she would be disabled for the balance of her life. Now 23, she is dependant upon government assistance for her survival and medical care.

Minimize the use of your garbage disposal because even cooked food contains oil and grease that can clog sewer lines. • Remove oil and grease from dishes, pots, and pans with a paper towel or napkin. • Pre-wash dishes, pans, and pots with cold water before putting them in the dishwasher. Hot water does not remove oil or grease but rather liquefy them. Once cool, they return to a solid and can clog sewer lines. • Cover kitchen sink with a strainer and empty into trash as needed.

Reuse cooking oil as often as possible. Store used cooking oil in the freezer to minimize odors. Broomfield residents can participate in the used cooking oil recycling program operated by the Public Works Fleet Services Division. For more information, call Fleet Services at 303.438.6336. Leading Broomfield’s Child Protective Service and Adult Protection

Bonnie Steele with Reggie Bicha, the prior director of the CO Department of Human Services

Bonnie Steele Motivated by Drive to Partner with Families By Megan Eichner

Bonnie Steele has always had a heart for service and knew she wanted to work with children in the foster care system since she was a teenager. She gets to do just that as the Intake Supervisor for Broomfield Child Protective Services and the Adult Protection Program.

B

onnie got her bachelor’s degree in social work from Arizona State University, and began working as a caseworker in 1999. After working in Arizona and Jefferson County, Bonnie made her way to Broomfield in 2015, where she started in Child Protective Services just two years later. Since then, her role has expanded into the Adult Protection Program which serves at-risk populations of all ages. Bonnie is constantly improving her skills and strives to “partner with families on a deeper level.” Although she began her career as a permanency caseworker (helping children remain in their homes or other lasting scenarios), she is now a generalist caseworker. She is responsible for many program areas, including screening, intake, assessment, ongoing cases, and permanency cases. This has allowed her to more thoroughly partner with families to make meaningful connections. Bonnie attributes more time with families to greater success in maintaining family units. Although it can be intense and challenging, Bonnie said, “it can be encouraging and it is even more rewarding to me.” Bonnie explained that achieving excellence in her work would not be possible without the reinforcement provided by outside sources. The support of various community organizations and the community mentality of collaboration are highly valued in her field of work, and this is what allows Bonnie and her coworkers to better serve Broomfield citizens. “We work closely with various agencies within the community. Afterall, everyone plays

a role within their community for the safety of at-risk individuals.” Bonnie cites the implementation of the Differential Response model as a key tool for her work in our community. The model allows each referral case to focus on broad matters instead of singular concerns and has led to less investigative approaches and more work with families to reach their goals. Bonnie reiterated, “The more we can improve our direct practice with families, the more we can help improve the lives within our community.” She is excited about a new prevention caseworker position in her department, which will help keep children within their own homes by providing outreach services for families. Bonnie also does a great deal of work to support at-risk adults in Broomfield. The team, consisting of various community agencies, creates goals for improving services and education, and meeting individual needs. This work provides opportunities for the sharing of information and resources, as well was the ability to use a team approach to work through individual scenarios. Bonnie makes sure to learn people’s stories on a personal level and to understand their complexities. This is important to her because

“in these jobs, we see some things in the world that many do not believe exist or have been fortunate enough to not have experienced in their lives.” Truly and sincerely getting to know the people she is working with allows her to help in the most impactful way. Then she is able to witness the resilience of families that move beyond dark places in their lives. What Bonnie would like the community to know about her work can best be said in her own words: “What I would love for people to know is this is not just a ‘job.’ It is not just a paycheck or being a part of the government

Broomfield Veterans

Reflect on Service, Life After the Military, and T he Importance of Veteran’s Day By Kristen Beckman

O

n November 11, the country will pause to acknowledge and reflect on the sacrifices our military veterans have made to protect our freedom and maintain our safety. Many of these veterans are our neighbors, co-workers, friends, and family members. The Broomfielder interviewed several local veterans to find out about their military service and what Veteran’s Day means to them. Their paths were very different. Some entered the military out of a sense of duty during a time of war. Others were drafted but went willingly to serve their country when their number was called. Still others saw a career path in the military and served over a generation of peace, war, and political maneuvering. Their time in the military undoubtedly taught them many things. Among the common themes are the development of leadership skills that apply to civilian careers; a sense of civic duty that propels them to volunteer in their communities; an appreciation for their families who made sacrifices on the home front while they were often away; and a love for their fellow soldiers.

Frank Smith Hometown: Queens, New York Military Service: After working as a welder on the USS Missouri, Smith joined the Navy in July 1944 after he graduated from high school. He volunteered for the submarine service but was assigned instead to the destroyer USS Somers, where he became a decoder for classified communications. He was reassigned to the submarine service in 1945 and was released from service in July 1946 following the close of World War II. Life after the military: Smith has been married to his wife, Fran, for 73 years. Together they have seven children, 16 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson. After leaving the Navy, Smith worked at his family’s restaurant in New York before joining IBM in 1951. In 1965, Smith was transferred to IBM’s plant in Gunbarrel, Colorado. He worked at IBM until 1990 and moved to Broomfield in 2000. In addition to coaching youth baseball for many years, Smith also volunteered with Attention Homes Inc., including serving as president for the nonprofit that worked with homeless and at-risk youth and young adults. Smith was also president of Boulder County Partners, a nonprofit that connects mentors with at-risk youth. Why did you join the Navy at 17 years old? “Because of the war being on, I decided it would be the appropriate thing to do. I volunteered for the submarine service, and when I reported an officer came up to me and said, ‘Frank, there’s been a change. We are putting you on a destroyer. What do you think of that?’ and I said, ‘That’s OK.’ Was there anything else to say? I had two choices: Do that or go home to mommy and daddy.” What did you learn from your time in the military? “I was on a destroyer with 306 other sailors, and you really count on one another. You don’t think so, but after time you really know how important the other guys are to you as an individual. I had a lot of positive experiences. Some of it was sad, because we lost a couple of sailors. But living that close to 306 other sailors, that’s a lot of people to get to know. Your buds become your buds.”

36

THE BROOMFIELDER™ NOVEMBER 2019

Lloyd L. (Lew) Moir Jr. Hometown: Le Mars, Iowa Military Service: After two years at Northwestern College and Iowa State University, Moir joined the Aviation Cadet program and earned his pilot’s wings in February 1958. Following graduation, he entered the advanced fighter training program flying F-86Fs, and he flew B-52 Bombers for most of his career, including during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962 and in Viet Nam. He retired in September 1984 as a Colonel. After the Military: Moir joined the civilian workforce at IBM as a program manager where he led the development of the Battle Management/Command Control architecture for the Star Wars program. During his time at IBM, Moir was transferred to Boulder, and despite working for several years in Europe, Moir and his wife, Amy, maintained their home in Broomfield and returned to the community permanently after he retired from IBM in March 1999. He has volunteered with many local organizations, including the Broomfield Depot Museum Friends, the Broomfield Veteran’s Memorial Museum, the Broomfield Community Foundation, and the Rotary Club of Broomfield. What did you take away from your time in the military? “I was raised on a farm, in a small community. It wasn’t like I was a world traveler. When I got on the train in Omaha, Nebraska, and took it to San Antonio, Texas, for training, it was the first time I’d been anywhere. It was my first time on a train. After I finished that portion of training, I actually flew home and that was first time I’d been on a plane.” What does Veteran’s Day mean to you? “I think it’s critical for people to know and honor those who have served. It’s the stories not of generals and politicians, but the guys in the trenches and their experiences. Some were quite harrowing and we are remiss if we don’t have these things so younger generations understand and recognize the people who to some degree paid a very high tax. It is a time to recognize that yes, we did have wars and yes, people fought for us and maintained our freedoms.”

Veteran’s Day Program When: Nov. 11, 2019, 10:00 a.m. Where: Broomfield High School Auditorium Speaker: SSG Ray B Robinson joined the military in 1985, became an Airborne Ranger and did a peacekeeping mission in Sinai Egypt before leaving the military to go to college. He then served in the National Guard as a crew chief at the high-altitude training site in Eagle, Colorado, before re-joining the active military in 1995. He deployed to Kuwait, Hawaii, and Japan, and finally to Iraq in 2003 where he was injured when the vehicle he was riding in struck an anti-tank mine. He returned to Colorado after recovering at Fort Stewart, Georgia. His awards include the Bronze Star with Valor, Purple Heart, Army Achievement Medal, and three good conduct medals. Essay Contest: The Broomfield Veterans Memorial Museum launched an essay contest this year and invited Broomfield students to submit a short essay on what Veteran’s Day means to them. Contest winners will be invited to read their essays during the program and their school will be awarded a $500 stipend. Schedule: The Veteran’s Day program will include an opening ceremony, presentation of the colors by the Broomfield Police Department, Pledge of Allegiance, invocation, music by Rocky Mountain Brass, speaker presentation, essay readings, remarks from Mayor Randy Ahrens, and a closing ceremony.

Guests and Food and Drink! Oh My! It’s the Holiday Season! What Should You Serve?

‘Tis the season to gather and eat and drink! But which drinks go best with your party menu? Unless you have a personal sommelier … a trip to the liquor store can be overwhelming and confusing. We asked Total Beverage for some tips.

40

THE BROOMFIELDER™ NOVEMBER 2019

The Broomfielder: I am interested in hosting a heavy hors d’oeuvre cocktail party for the holidays. I would like to serve wine and seasonal finger foods like mini beef wellington and tiny prime rib sandwiches, with roasted tomatoes and brussel sprout kabobs and maybe garlic fingerling potatoes. I also plan to have traditional fruit and cheese boards, as well as holiday cookies. What wine selections would you recommend? Total Beverage: “Fantastic menu choices! For the mini beef wellingtons, I would recommend a medium bodied Cabernet Sauvignon or Pinot Noir. An easy drinking Chianti pairs well with the roasted tomatoes and a vegetal wine, like a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc or an Oregon Pinot Gris, is a fantastic pair to the brussel sprout kabobs. For the fruit and cheese board, all the above suggestions would suit most tastes. Aside from a super salty cheese against a tannic Cab, I’m never met a block of cheese and a bottle of wine that didn’t like each other. The one wine still needed: a sweet wine for those sweet wine enthusiasts! So, throw in there a Moscato D’asti - perfect with those holiday cookies.” ~ Kurt Mayo, Sommelier and Corporate Wine Buyer at Total Beverage

The Broomfielder: Every holiday season is bound to include one turkey or ham feast. Can you suggest some appropriately paired wines for guests who like both white and red wines? Total Beverage: “Turkey vs. Ham: a good rule of thumb is that you don’t want to go with too heavy of a red wine. A Spanish Tempranillo, Pinot Noir, or a Beaujolais are light enough to let the main course shine. A medium weight Albarino, Dry Riesling, or Gewurztraminer pair with both dishes nicely, and if your guests like sweet wines, try a Sweet Riesling. Another tip: when pairing wines with foods, pair your wine with the sauce, just as much as you do the meat. It’s an important part of the meal!” ~ Kurt Mayo, Sommelier and Corporate Wine Buyer at Total Beverage

The Broomfielder: Wine is fine, but I want to warm up my party a bit more. Do you have any tips for hosting a gathering centered around bourbon and whiskey tasting? Which brands should I bring to the table and what snacking foods would go best with this theme? Total Beverage: “Whiskey certainly is a popular Holiday libation, and a general rule with pairings is to pair food that either compliments or contrasts the flavors in the whiskey. For example, rye whiskey and scotch pair well with smoked salmon, but a whiskey with smokier flavors works with aged cheddar, or you can try softer cheeses like brie with light or fruit forward whiskeys. Apple slices or warm apple pie goes really nicely with the brown sugar and caramel flavors in many bourbons. However, if you’re having a full whiskey tasting, it’s best to keep the food simple, so as not to overwhelm your palate with foods that are too salty or sweet. Dark chocolate, sliced baguettes, milder cheese, and sliced crudite will keep the palate cleansed and compliment the bourbon or whiskey.” ~ Zach Pearson, Total Beverage Westminster Store Manager and Whiskey Enthusiast

The Broomfielder: I would love help planning beverage menus for several holiday gatherings this year. How can Total Beverage help me? Total Beverage: “Look no further! Total Beverage is your one stop shop for Holiday beers, wines, and spirits. We’ve got over 16,000 items in store, and offer convenient same day delivery, in store pickup, curbside pickup (for when it’s too chilly to leave your car!) through our website, www.totalbev.com, and our app. If you’re planning a dinner party, our in store experts can help you select the perfect pairing wines and spirits for your guests that are right on budget. For larger personal or corporate events, the Total Beverage event planning department can coordinate an event discount, venue delivery or store pickup, plus we will buy back any unopened product, so you don’t have to worry about buying too much. Just visit the customer service desk in store to get a quote!” ~ Rick Morgan, President of Total Beverage VisitVisit us online us online at: www.TheBroomfielder.com at: www.TheBroomfielder.com

Your Household’s

By Elizabeth Buckingham

THE STATISTICS ARE STAGGERING: Our landfills will be full in fewer than 20 years, less than 10% of all recycling is actually recycled, and China no longer accepts our trash. There is an island of floating plastic in the Pacific Ocean, twice the size of Texas. Whales, turtles, seabirds, and other marine life die repeatedly with plastic waste in their stomachs. Our planet simply cannot continue to absorb trash like this: we must reduce the amount of waste we produce.

THE GOOD NEWS: It’s not as challenging as you think to reduce your household’s waste stream. Taking a few minutes to really look at your family’s trash will show you exactly where your waste is coming from, and how you can cut back.

42

THE BROOMFIELDER™ NOVEMBER 2019

T

he easiest way we can reduce our waste is by not creating it in the first place. Before you accept that free pen, branded drink koozie or cheap party favor, ask yourself if you really want that to be your problem. Refuse to purchase products sold in needless packaging, like apples in plastic trays. Don’t buy anything packaged in Styrofoam, which isn’t recyclable. Most of our planet’s waste problems come in the form of single-use plastic, which typically can’t be recycled. Two million single-use plastic bags are thrown out each minute, and this is an area where it’s easy to do better. Keep reusable shopping bags next to your door and in your car. Small packable bags are perfect for your purse or backpack. Refuse plastic bags whenever they’re offered. Sixteen billion disposable coffee cups are used each year; the waxy coating means these can’t be recycled. Less than 1% of all plastic water bottles are actually recycled. Keep a nice coffee mug handy, and invest in a durable water bottle. Make yourself a to-go kit with a reusable plate, napkin and cutlery to use at the office or when getting takeaway. Many companies are phasing out singleuse plastic drinking straws; there are plenty of washable metal and plastic straws available now, perfect for adding to your picnic kit. Forty percent of all edible food produced is thrown out uneaten; buying processed and packaged food adds a lot of stress to our overburdened landfills. Meal prep kits create a huge amount of waste, most of it unrecyclable. Buy fresh food and cook and eat at home, and be mindful of the amount of food your household is throwing out. Start a compost pile for food scraps and yard waste; much of our landfill space is taken up with organic matter that could easily be composted.

GUIDING YOU HOME 50,000 mattresses are thrown out each day in the U.S. Before impulsively buying something new, think about whether you actually need it and consider its end-of-life – how will you dispose of it? Certain local facilities accept hard-to-recycle items like appliances and mattresses, but you’ll need to do your research. The City and County of Broomfield has operated the Broomfield Recycling Center (BRC) since 1998. Lesa Julian, Broomfield’s Environmental Services Superintendent, says, “The Center is available to residents for recycling cardboard, plastic, metal, and glass containers, office paper, newspaper, books, shoes, and textiles. The City offers several other programs including Spring Cleanup, an annual event that gives residents an opportunity to dispose of large, nonhazardous items that trash haulers do not normally pick up. We also offer hazardous waste disposal, tree limb recycling, waste oil and cooking oil recycling, paper shredding and electronic waste recycling events throughout the year.” Julian shared some additional tips for Broomfield residents looking to take care of the planet: “Keep all landfill-bound trash in bagged containers so it does not blow away and end up as litter in our parks and open spaces. Conserve water by using a smart sprinkler controller and high-efficiency appliances in your home. Plant a garden that attracts pollinators. Never overuse fertilizers or herbicides, which end up in the waterways as runoff. Don’t let car oil or soap spill into the street and flow to the storm drain. Convert your yard from turf grass into xeriscape. Plant native trees and flowers that thrive in our soil and climate.”
