FROM THE

Holiday Joy and

Other Feelings...

T

he month of October brings numerous birthdays in my family which we always celebrate with one large family party. It is a day filled with many people, much food, lots of laughter, and love. The day is particularly special to me as two of the birthdays celebrated are for my daughters, who this year are 19- and 21-yearsold! The event feels like the first hill of the very fast moving roller-coaster that is the holiday season. This year I am struck by the change that is in the air. “Life” and everything that it brings is changing the face of our traditions and celebrations. Most poignantly, I daily think of my sister and brother-in-law who now have two sons in the military and are missing them desperately. Whether or not we are able to see them for certain occasions has become a happy surprise that we all pray for. My own daughter now has a serious boyfriend and will spend her first major holiday away from our family, and with his, in Texas. My husband’s brother and his wife recently moved out of state so we will also miss them for certain events. All of the nieces and nephews are entering adulthood and with that brings other commitments for many. My uncle has just lost his wife to cancer and undoubtedly will have a difficult holiday season. Please understand, I do not intend this as complaining. A holiday is not made by one or another person’s place at the table. At least it should not be that way for the rest of the people at the table. Often it IS that way for a person who is included in a gathering that might not be THEIR family or THEIR core circle. I am part of a family that is abundantly blessed. There are many of us, we mostly live near each other, and don’t even get me started about our traditions and FOOD! I learned from a very young age from my parents about welcoming others and sharing our table. My father had a single friend at work who became part of our family table each holiday. My mother always encouraged us as young people to include a friend from out of state who needed a place to go on Thanksgiving and neighbors often joined us too. Now she extends that to her eight grandchildren and their friends. The size of the table fluctuates and the guests change a bit. Sometimes we are sad to not have dearest family with us. But we are still abundantly blessed. Who can you welcome to your table this year? Look around you and search your heart. You never know what this small but significant gesture might mean to someone who is just looking for a place at a table, and to enjoy the warmth of your family this year.

Happy Thanksgiving,

Tina Eichner, Editor 6

THE BROOMFIELDER™ NOVEMBER 2018

Documentation is important in many aspects of our lives today. We rely on Wills, Trusts, and Powers of Attorney to provide direction upon our disability or death. But we should not rely on documentation alone. The type of documents we have will not ensure an effective transition upon our disability or death. Even the best document from a legal technical perspective will fail if we don’t do these key things: The documents must be designed through personalized counseling. Your family is different than every other family. You have goals, dreams, aspirations, and relationships that cannot be properly addressed through standardized forms. You must properly title your assets so they can be captured by your estate plan. If your assets bypass the instructions you prepared, your documents are worthless. You must update your documentation on a regular basis. Changes in the tax and legal environment, and in your personal situation, can have a drastic effect on the outcome of your plan. Your family should control the process on your disability or death. Not only should you be organized so that they are not scrambling to put your affairs in order, but they should know what to do, how to do it, and how they should pay for any assistance they may need. Preparing your family for the inevitable ensures things will go more smoothly.

Impact Your Community with Just $1 per Day through iGIVE365: A New Collective Giving Opportunity from the Broomfield Community Foundation

What if you could make a major impact in the Broomfield community with a very small daily investment? What if that small investment helped dozens of organizations and thousands of individuals here in our own community? What if helping your fellow citizens was as easy as sending a text?

B

y supporting the Broomfield Community Foundation’s iGIVE365 program you can be part of a program that does all of this all of this and much more. iGIVE365 is designed to encourage individuals to discover the satisfaction of giving and the collective impact that we can make together. The innovative program provides members with the opportunity to pool their money and, for just a dollar a day, to make a significant impact on the entire community. Members are exposed to a wide range of social issues, communitybased efforts, and the community change agents working to address them. “Together, we can do more and all make a difference,” said Broomfield Community Foundation Executive Director Marianna Williamson. “By committing to giving just $365 – a dollar a day – those daily dollars are pooled with others in the community and go towards grants funded by the Broomfield Community Foundations in the upcoming year.” In 2017, the Broomfield Community Foundation funded 65 local non-profits and initiatives that directly impacted residents by supporting human services, arts

and humanities, seniors, and civic and education programs and organizations. The program empowers participants to help direct dollars committed. Once per year each fall, iGIVE365 members will have the opportunity to collectively select the philanthropic projects and programs that are most important to them. Based on member feedback and the top areas of interest, six finalists will be selected to submit video applications for a $10,000 Impact Grant, and members will vote to select the most compelling need. “This year, the Foundation did not have enough resources to fund the amount requested by the 60+ area non-profits’ grant applications. If only 329 individuals signed up as iGIVE365 members, we could fully fund the requests that came in this year,” explained Williamson. “Think of the impact each iGIVE365 member could have. With just 274 iGive365 members we will add $100,000 to our annual grant distribution,” she added. She explained that the grantees and Impact Grant finalists will be announced in September, and that iGIVE365 participants will be updated on the status of grants, and provided an opportunity to view final reports, hear success stories of the programs funded, and even participate in iGIVE365 member service projects and site visits throughout the year with featured grantees. The opportunity is not just designed for individual contributors. Businesses that want to encourage community involvement and giving among their employees need look no further than iGiVE365. Some companies have actively encouraged employees to join and have either fully or partially matched employee memberships. Others have chosen a particular amount they are willing to donate and matched all new employee memberships up to that amount. Smaller companies have sponsored one or two employees at the $365 level so that employees could participate without paying anything. And businesses can become Business Impact Members by joining for $365 per month (or an annual payment of $4,380). Recognizing

Angels in Broomfield This Holiday Season

In the September and October issues we asked readers to share a few words about a special person who... selflessly gives to the community... is committed to a cause or organization... helps others in the neighborhood... simply makes their own corner of the world a better place, or... inspires with their generosity of time, treasure or talent. We were looking for those quiet, unsung local angels who embody giving and deserve a round of thanks. Thank you to everyone who shared appreciation for a special friend and thank you to our Angels! You make Broomfield a better place for all of us!

Holy Comforter Episcopal Church We met with Jackson Dreiling in April of 2018 about the idea of offering respite care to families with young kids with special needs. Without blinking an eye he said, “We would love to support this idea and think that it is a great need in our community.” After that day, others at the church, including Rev. Kim, The Rev. William, Jackson, Sunday School Staff, and Office Staff have been nothing but gracious, loving, and supportive. Thanks to them, Lil’ Friends is now up and running. Alleluia! They are all truly angels at The Holy Comforter Episcopal Church. ~Nominated by Shelly Cox and Ange Shores, Lil’ Friends

Barbara Schipper Barbara Schipper has shared her joy and talents for 30 years as the director of the Broomfield Civic Chorus. Her choir shares her love of music and deep affection for Broomfield at their concerts throughout the year. From Veteran’s Day to the Christmas tree lighting to the Memorial Day concert in the spring, Barbara Schipper and her Civic Chorus are there. ~Nominated by Joan Robinson

THE BROOMFIELDER™ NOVEMBER 2018

Carmen Akbiniak Carmen Albiniak looks like an angel to us here in Gate ‘N Green. She serves on our board of directors and can be seen almost any time the weather permits tending one of our half dozen or so mini flower gardens. She also coordinates the community gardens at the Salvation Army and tends one for FISH so they can have fresh produce during the summer. She even provides rides and does errands for some of our people who can’t do so for themselves anymore. ~Nominated by Shirley R. Orr

Leslie HalsteadNyachikanda Leslie is inspirational, selfless, kind, and has dedicated her life to helping others. She runs the “Broomfield Moms Volunteer Group,” whose mission is to volunteer their time and talents to enriching the community and making a difference in the lives of residents of all ages. Past events have included volunteering at Broomfield FISH, packing bags for Meals on Wheels, putting together chemo kits for cancer patients, and many other projects. In addition, Leslie and her sister-in-law run a non-profit in South Africa, which serves young girls who do not have access to menstrual care. ~Nominated by Alison Hanson

Edith (94) has lived in Broomfield since 1958. She has been an active member of Broomfield United Methodist Church since arriving in Broomfield. She was a driving force in organizing a church van to provide transportation to seniors on Sunday mornings. Edith is a current member and has held leadership positions in a philanthropic organization, TTT. The TTT organization’s mission is to provide summer camp opportunities for girls. Helping the homeless is one of the causes nearest to Edith’s heart. Until a couple of years ago, you could find Edith at the BUMC kitchen every Saturday morning, preparing meals that would later be delivered to the homeless in Denver. Today, Edith is crocheting sleeping mats made of plarn (plastic grocery bags, cut and woven together like yarn) to be donated to the homeless. She has spent her life dedicated to helping others.

How to Set a Festive

Holiday Table By Elizabeth Buckingham

The Thanksgiving meal rightfully steals all of the attention, but setting a beautiful table can be fun, too – and you don’t have to break the bank to do it. Rather than blow your budget on expensive bouquets of imported hothouse flowers, harness your DIY ingenuity and create some truly showstopping displays. 34

THE BROOMFIELDER™ NOVEMBER 2018

Send the kids out to the backyard to harvest seasonally appropriate decor. Tall grasses, willow branches, herbs gone to seed – your own neighborhood can be a bounty of earthy, rustic decor options. Place reeds and branches in slender vases or flea market bottles, and arrange in groups. If you can obtain sheaves of wheat or spent cornstalks, they’ll make striking arrangements perfect for backing a buffet; force the stems to stand up straight by pouring sugar or salt in the bottom of the vase. Don’t forget the pinecones; they’re widely available, usually free and perfect for fall and winter decorating.

Have a boring clear glass vase lurking around? Dress it up by spray painting dried corncobs with metallic paint, then tie them around the vase with raffia. Filled with stately, elegant branches or colorful mums, your unique centerpiece will be the talk of the table.

Enlist the young ones to make dozens of crepe paper flowers to decorate the table and buffet. Easy-to-follow tutorials are available online; use fall colors, like rich reds, golds, and oranges, and create bouquets, napkin ties, and other festive decor. Craft projects are great for keeping the wee ones occupied and the decorating budget in check!

Candlelight makes everyone and everything look better. Fill short, simple votive holders about one-third full with acorns, unshelled nuts, coffee beans or pretty pebbles. Nestle small unscented candles in each and set down the middle of the table. Wind ribbons, greenery or grapevines around the candles and enjoy the soft illumination.

Those tiny pumpkins that are always on sale this time of year are useful for decorations all over the house. Spray paint them in metallic gold or silver, and arrange in a shallow bowl or platter. Carve out the stem and they make perfect holders for votive candles; secure small glass hurricanes to the pumpkin using floral pins. If you’re setting a large table, attach a placecard to each pumpkin, plus a small card on which guests can write what they’re thankful for. Read the cards aloud during dessert!

A large pumpkin makes the perfect holder for a simple glass vase. Cut a thin layer off the bottom so the pumpkin sits flat. Carve and remove the interior, then secure the vase inside and fill with flowers, herbs or grasses. Don’t forget to roast the seeds for a cocktail snack! If you’re not up for carving another pumpkin, just poke small holes into the flesh using a sharp skewer, and display single flower stems or sprigs of bright fall foliage.

Before the madness of the holidays descends, spend a few minutes browsing through your own home and backyard for simple, fresh decorating ideas. You’ll be amazed at what you’ll find to jazz up your table this season! To view The Broomfielder™ online visit: www.loudmouthmedia.com

‘Tis the Season for

Holiday Shopping By Kristen Beckman

The transition from fall to winter heralds the beginning of another season: holiday shopping season. Stores have had holiday items for sale in their holiday shops for weeks already, and the hottest gift items will soon be stocked on store shelves and in online warehouses awaiting one of the busiest shopping seasons of the year. On average, Americans spend about $1,000 on holiday gifts with much of that spending concentrated between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Last year, more than 174 million Americans shopped in stores and online during the five-day weekend between Thanksgiving Day and Cyber Monday, according to the National Retail Federation. The most popular shopping day was Black Friday. Holiday spending in 2018 is expected to increase between 4.3 and 4.8 percent from last year to about $720 billion thanks to a healthy economy, low unemployment, and strong consumer confidence, the organization said.

Shopping Options For many, nothing beats the ability to see, touch, and immediately buy the items they’ve selected for their family and friends. Others prefer the convenience of shopping for items online from the comfort of their home. Despite the growth and popularity of online shopping, in-store buying continues to dominate holiday shopping, according to many consumer spending studies. However, most consumers are expected to shop both online and at stores this holiday season. Black Friday is typically the busiest and most profitable day of the year for brick-andmortar retailers. For many people, studying holiday ad inserts and strategizing about how to hit each retail store they want to visit to get the best deals possible, is an annual tradition. Black Friday shoppers can expect to get some great deals on electronics, appliances, clothing, and toys as retailers deeply discount such items to attract customers. Consumer Reports recommends starting early on Black Friday to get the best deals, including scanning circulars the week before, using price and coupon tools to compare prices among retailers, and monitoring retailer social media to stay up to date on deals and promotions. Consumer Reports also recommends creating a Black Friday budget and sticking to it to avoid getting caught up in buying excitement once inside stores.

38

THE BROOMFIELDER™ NOVEMBER 2018

The Saturday following Black Friday is billed as Small Business Saturday, when consumers are encouraged to shop local businesses and mom-and-pop shops. Cyber Monday has taken on notoriety of its own as many retailers offer online-only deals on the final day of the post-Thanksgiving shopping weekend. Online shopping

OPEN FOR BRONCOS GAMES

continues to increase as a percentage of holiday shopping, with Amazon grabbing the largest share of online dollars spent. To get the best deals on Cyber Monday, experts recommend planning your online shopping in advance by bookmarking your favorite retailers’ websites, following them on social media, and reviewing their shipping and return policies and fees. Avoid sites with poor security practices to protect yourself from identity theft and stay within a predetermined budget. After you make purchases online, monitor bank accounts and credit cards for any suspicious activity.

Buying Strategies While there are many amazing deals to be had on Black Friday, most retailers continue to offer deals throughout the weeks leading up to Christmas, and smart consumers can take advantage of this to buy items that are perennially discounted deeply. According to Consumer Reports, November is the best month to buy a television because the average price for a set hits bottom on Cyber Monday. Refrigerators are another item that can be purchased at a deep discount in November, and other major appliances, including washing machines, dishwashers, cooktops, and freezers, may also come with a lower price tag this month. Discounts are also typically available on smaller appliances that may also double as gifts, including blenders and coffee makers, which are frequently discounted during the holiday shopping season. Fitness trackers, which are a popular gift choice, are frequently discounted during the holiday shopping season, both in November and December, according to Consumer Reports. In December, many electronics that make great holiday gifts will be offered at a discount, according to Consumer Reports. Headphones top the list of deeply discounted items in December and are a perennial gift-giving favorite. Wireless speakers are another great gift option that are frequently discounted in the weeks leading up to the holidays. Other popular and frequently discounted items in December are cordless drills, tablets, and smart watches.

Veterans Day Ceremony CAPS BUSY FALL FOR MUSEUM By Kristen Beckman

T

he Broomfield Veterans Memorial Museum will hold its annual Veterans Day Ceremony from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 12, at the Broomfield High School Auditorium. The annual ceremony honors and celebrates the service of past veterans and current military personnel with speeches, music, and tributes. Several hundred residents and visitors are expected to attend the event. The keynote speaker this year is Rick Crandall, a long-time radio host on AM 1430 KEZW and the founder of the Colorado Freedom Memorial in Aurora near Buckley Air Force Base. The memorial is a glass panel structure that features about 6,000 names of Coloradoans killed or missing in action. The ceremony comes shortly after the museum marked the passing of its last living founder on Oct. 4. Bob Seeber was one of six veterans who founded the museum more than 15 years ago. Seeber, a World War II veteran and longtime Broomfield resident, joined fellow veterans

John Atkinson, Vic Boccard, Paul Murphy, Bob Davenport, and Bill Humphrey to form the museum in 2001. Ed Miccio, a spokesman for the museum, said all six of the museum’s founders were wonderful men and citizens who contributed greatly to their community. In the years since it opened in the space formerly occupied by the library, the museum has established itself as an important part of the community, commemorating area residents’ contributions to both war and peace through its exhibits as well as its education programs and its outreach in the community. This summer, the museum expanded into the garden level of its building at 12 Garden Center, allowing it to enlarge its exhibit space on the upper level of the museum. Miccio said the museum plans to use the extra space to expand its Korean and Vietnam War exhibits as well as to add a Cold War exhibit. Meanwhile, the museum was able to move its resource library, artifact storage, and meeting and education space to the lower level. The new meeting space has been ideal for programs like the museum’s

More than 50 attendees were on hand for a recent Coffee & Conversation presentation given by Eric Cahn, a Holocaust survivor whose parents were imprisoned at Auschwitz while he and his sister were hidden by a French family during World War II. Miccio said the museum has hosted nearly 160 Coffee & Conversation presentations since 2012. The museum also continues its extensive outreach activities. In September, museum representatives attended the Scientific & Cultural Facilities District Teachers Night at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science to share with educators the ways it caters to the education community, including sending veterans to speak at schools and providing educational trunks with artifacts and information for students to explore. The museum also participated in Broomfield Days with displays of military vehicles, a World War II cannon and re-enactors as well as activities for kids.

WASTEWATER DIVISION

Wanted: Your Drain’s Worst Enemy Last Seen:

Wanted for:

Loitering in Sinks and Drains

Causing Sewer Overflows and Back-ups

BEWARE OF THE GREASE GOBLIN • Never pour grease down sinks, drains or into toilets. • Grease can clog pipes and cause sewer overflows and back-ups into basements, yards, and storm drains. • Grease overflows and back-ups pose potential health risks and environmental problems that can be costly to clean up.

SOLUTIONS TO THE GREASE GOBLIN • Once cooled, pour cooking oils and grease into a nonrecyclable container. Add kitty litter or coffee grounds, seal the container and place in the trash. • Scrape food scraps from dishes into trash. Minimize the use of your garbage disposal because even cooked food contains oil and grease that can clog sewer lines. • Remove oil and grease from dishes, pots, and pans with a paper towel or napkin. • Pre-wash dishes, pans, and pots with cold water before putting them in the dishwasher. Hot water does not remove oil or grease but rather liquefy them. Once cool, they return to a solid and can clog sewer lines. • Cover kitchen sink with a strainer and empty into trash as needed.

MORE SOLUTIONS TO THE GREASE GOBLIN • •

Reuse cooking oil as often as possible. Store used cooking oil in the freezer to minimize odors. Broomfield residents can participate in the used cooking oil recycling program operated by the Public Works Fleet Services Division. For more information, call Fleet Services at 303.438.6336. Start a compost pile at your home with food scraps that are not meat.

Help keep the Grease Goblin out of your drains and in the hands of the proper authorities!
