FROM THE

Hang On...

Summer is Coming!

A

fter an unusually frigid February, the statement above might be hard to believe, but Summer WILL be here before you know it! Planning for summer activities and travels is a coping mechanism for many, but if you have young children, planning now for their summer endeavors is a necessity. The choices are many! In Broomfield there are several camps and programs for children of all ages, and serving numerous interests. We detail many options in this issue. If you find summer planning daunting and are unsure where to begin, your child’s specific school – whether preschool or elementary – or school district can be a great place to start. City recreation centers and health clubs are a good second stop. After that, broaden to specific programs that serve your child’s interest or personality – whether that is music, dance, art, sports, scouting, or any of a dozen other areas of emphasis. Because my spouse is a teacher, during their growing years, my daughters and I enjoyed the kids having Dad’s full attention every summer and therefore that we did not need to strictly plan for every moment. Summers included their sports teams, hikes with Dad, days at the pool, and mornings sleeping in. But to keep variety and activity as part of the mix, I always started by scheduling a few activities with the primary locations where we were already engaged. When the girls were little ones, that included taking advantage of the summer programs at both Bal Swan Children’s Center and Dance Arts Studio. This school year, we are for the first time experiencing the “empty nest,” with both of our dear daughters now in college. I find the term “empty nest” strange though, because both of those birdies are coming home for the summer. The nest has not been empty, just temporarily roomier, and I definitely look forward to having the kiddos home again. While we no longer need to plan their activities, family late night movies, game sessions, dinner on the patio, and evenings by the fire will be sincerely welcomed come May and June. I hope you are looking forward to quality time with loved ones too. So don’t let the Winter blues get you down. Please peruse this issue for great ideas to begin planning a memorable summer for your entire family and bask in thoughts of sun and fun!

MARCH 08 ark your calendar for a double feature M from BackStory Youth Theatre at the Broomfield Auditorium at 7:00 p.m. The performance opens with Laffin’ School and Jokes! Jokes! Jokes! A young substitute teacher, Miss Quackenbush, turns up at the Little Red Schoolhouse and finds her class is comprised of the dumbest (and funniest) pupils anywhere. The previous teacher had a nervous breakdown. No wonder! With things like mice in lunch boxes and a student with the measles, anything more will drive you crazy! Unless the likable but slow-witted pupils can pass a simple exam, they won’t advance to the next grade. The comedy is followed by the classic Hans Christian Anderson tale of Thumbelina. The evening is sure to be fun for all ages! Tickets are only $3 at the door with children 4 years and younger free! Doors open at 6:30 p.m. For information visit www.backstorytheatre.org.

But when she goes to work with her dad for a day in New York City, Jenna discovers that he might just have the coolest job of all, and she might just have the confidence to speak up about it. This fantastically funny familyfriendly musical shows just how “top” a top job can be! This show is great for the whole family. New Program

BENEFITS SENIOR VETERANS

in Broomfield County By Elizabeth Buckingham

We live in a world in which many people, including seniors, face challenges that make it difficult to flourish in their communities. For seniors these unique challenges often take the form of physical and mental health issues, economic pressures, loss of family and friends, and cultural and community isolation. Not knowing how you or your loved one will continue day-to-day activities can cause significant stress; if you or your loved one is also a veteran, these challenges are often compounded.

14

THE BROOMFIELDER™ MARCH 2019

C

ultivate, a local 501(c)(3) non-profit, is dedicated to helping seniors flourish by reconnecting them with their surrounding communities. The northern metro area as a whole, including Broomfield and Boulder counties, is aging at one of the fastest rates in Colorado. It’s estimated that by 2030, more than 20% of the population in this area will be 65 or older; helping seniors live a vibrant, connected life ultimately helps the entire community. Cultivate has just launched a new program for veterans in Broomfield County (and other nearby counties) called VetsGo, and it provides volunteer-driven rides to VA medical appointments for senior veterans. In Broomfield County the program is currently just available to veterans 60 years and older, but as demand and funding increases, VetsGo hopes to expand to spouses, parents, and children of veterans. Said executive director Chrysti Britt, “We’re excited about this new program and the opportunity to connect members of the community with veterans. We want to both honor their service and provide greater community support.” Britt continued, “Our VetsGo program connects members of the community with senior veterans 60+ who face the challenge of obtaining reliable transportation to and from their VA medical appointments. With a generous heart and friendly smile, our volunteers pick up senior vets and escort them to and from VA medical appointments. Veterans frequently lack needed community support, and many senior veterans have difficulty finding transportation. VetsGo volunteers will take veteran riders 60 and over to and from VA medical appointments anywhere in the metro area, and the volunteer driver will wait for the veteran in order to provide a safe ride home.” Britt goes on to explain that all volunteers are thoroughly background-checked. Many of the volunteers are themselves veterans, so the VetsGo service also offers a friendly face and a connection with someone who may have experienced similar challenges. Rides need to be booked at least five days in advance but can also be reserved months out, so once a VA appointment is scheduled, a senior veteran can rest easy knowing that their transportation needs will be met. Many senior veterans struggle with the isolation of aging in their own homes, or if someone is not yet a senior, they have loved ones who are facing those challenges. To ensure a safe, vibrant, healthy community for all, it’s essential that we keep seniors involved and connected. If you’d like to learn more about volunteering with Cultivate’s many programs, or if you or a family member might qualify for VetsGo, please visit cultivate.ngo or call 303-443-1933.

I often hear people jokingly say, “Why should I care about what happens after my death, I’ll be dead!” Death is a tough subject. But the reason you should care, is that the people you love, and that love you, don’t usually die with you. So caring about what happens after your death is about them, not about you. Putting things in order for your eventual death or disability is an act of caring and love for your family. Quality planning may greatly reduce their burden, both emotionally and financially. Leaving a vague set of instructions for your family is not a recipe for success. You should invest the time and money to put a strategy in place to produce the best possible outcome and results for your loved ones. If things are a huge mess after your death, wonderful memories will be lost in the stress and chaos of trying to work through the problems. It is sad how often I hear, “I can’t believe they left us with this mess.” If you really care, you should invest in a plan that will produce an effective result upon your disability and death. If you have an interest in learning more about an estate planning process that people who truly care about their families are using to produce effective results, attend one of our complimentary orientation workshops to learn more.

Exploring

SUMMER CAMPS for Kids By Elizabeth Buckingham

Next fall, you want your kids to write a great essay on how they spent their summer vacation. And for that to happen, you need to start planning now, especially if you want to enroll them in one of the terrific summer camp options in the Broomfield area. Summer camps fill quickly, so if you spot one that you think your kiddo would love, don’t wait!

Camp Explorer through Broomfield Recreation Services offers tailored programs for children ages 6 to 9 and 10 to 14. Activities include swim days at The Bay, age-appropriate field trips, sports, games, and other fun events. Broomfield Rec also offers Explorers Outdoors, a program for ages 12 to 15 focused on introducing children to healthy outdoor activities. Participants will enjoy a new outdoor activity each day, including hiking, rock climbing, ropes courses, and more. Learn about summer programs at www.broomfield.org. Rocky Mountain Day Camp has locations in Superior and Boulder, and is open to campers ages 5 through 15. Campers are split into groups based on age; featured activities might include various sports, music and dance, archery, badminton, and much more. Full-day and half-day enrollment is available, and there are five sessions throughout the summer to suit your family’s schedule. Find out more at www.rockymtndaycamp.com. If you’re a resident of the Anthem Highlands neighborhood, you can register your child (5 to 12 years) for the YMCA’s Summer Day Camp. Experienced camp counselors offer children a variety of imaginative tasks that challenge minds and strengthen bodies, and children participate in age-appropriate enrichment, fitness, and creative activities. SCOUTING

SCOUTING PROGRAMS Offer Opportunities for Fun, Learning, and Leadership By Kristen Beckman

For more than a century, scouting has been an option for boys and girls who want to have fun with their peers, learn new skills, and sharpen their leadership. Boy Scouts of America (BSA) has more than 2.7 million youth participants and nearly 1 million adult volunteers in the United States. Girl Scouts currently counts 1.8 million girls and 800,000 adult members in the United States.

B

eginning last year, BSA opened its membership to girls who wish to participate in the Cub Scouts program, which runs from kindergarten through fifth grade. This year, older girls will be able to join troops from sixth grade and older. The program’s name has changed to Scouts BSA to be more inclusive. All dens and troops within the program remain gender specific. Cub Scout dens are organized by grade and offer age-appropriate programming through 5th grade, after which scouts can choose a Scouts BSA troop to join. In Scouts BSA, scouts all begin at the Tenderfoot rank and may work as dens or as individuals to progress to higher ranks. Each rank has certain

requirements including merit badges, leadership positions, projects, and camping. Venturing is a co-ed BSA program for youth aged 14- to 20-years old focused on adventure, leadership, personal growth, and service through self-elected, hobbybased adventures planned by youth members and supported by adult advisors. Scouts participate in all kinds of activities during three to four meetings per month that vary depending on the unit. Cub Scouts participate in fun, hands-on, family-based activities with an emphasis on character development, including crafts, games, service projects, hikes, and family campouts. Most units also put on a Pinewood Derby where Scouts build and race their own car. Older scouts participate in youth-led activities planned and directed by scouts within the troop. Typical activities include outdoor skills, knots, camping, cooking, hiking, backpacking, first aid, and service projects as well as career exploration, new hobbies, sports, art, and music. BSA programs and activities are provided yearround with most of the large camping opportunities happening during the summer. “Scouting provides unique experiences where youth are encouraged to learn, explore, connect, and lead,” said Elisa Corry, Area District Director, Boy Scouts of America, Denver Area Council. “It is a safe place where youth can try, fail, try again, and succeed.” Broomfield currently is home to three Cub Scout packs and four Scouts, BSA, troops with many more in surrounding communities. BSA units hold recruitment meetings in the spring and fall, although new scouts are always welcome to participate. To find a pack or troop, visit www.BeAScout.org.

irl Scouts runs from kindergarten through high school. Girls in kindergarten and first grade are Daisies, second and third graders are Brownies, fourth and fifth graders are junior Girl Scouts, sixth through eighth graders are Cadettes, and high schoolers are Seniors. Girl Scout troops are encouraged to explore and lead activities that interest the individual members in their unit – from STEM topics to outdoor activities to developing business and sales skills through the cookie program. Girls can pursue badges in all interest areas as a troop or individually if they choose. “The girl-led experience starts as early as Daisies,” said AnneMarie Harper, public relations director, Girl Scouts of Colorado. “We ask girls what they want to do and we have the resources for volunteers and parents to facilitate those activities. As girls get older, we take that girl-led experience to the next level where not only are they picking the activities they want to do but they’re leading their meetings.” Harper said encouraging girls to lead within their Girl Scout troops helps them build confidence to take on leadership roles at school and in other areas of their lives. The mission of Girl Scouting is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. Troops may meet as often as once per week. Scheduling is flexible to fit into the schedules of the troop’s leaders and members, said Harper. Meetings are held regularly throughout the school year, with many girls choosing to attend Girl Scout camps in the summer at two resident overnight camps in Bailey and Woodland Park as well as at properties throughout the state that troops can reserve for unit camping trips. FITNESS

Summer

BOOT CAMPS for Adults By Sara Lynn Baker, MS, CSCS

Colorado is often touted as one of the most active states in the country. Due to our active population, residents also have many structured fitness activities to choose from. Though traditional gyms still seem to be popular, boutique fitness studios – a studio that specializes in one type of class – continue to grow in numbers. Small group training studios such as CrossFit and Personal Training Studios are also popular. These two trends continue to grow for many reasons.

26

THE BROOMFIELDER™ MARCH 2019

O

ne of the biggest appeals of boutique fitness is a sense of community. When attending a class or small group training session at one of these studios, you are often working out with a smaller group of people anywhere from 4 to 15 people vs. the larger commercial gyms which can have up to 50 people in a class. If you attend the classes or sessions at the same time fairly consistently, it is likely you will get to know fellow class members fairly well. Class participants also like the ease of attending a class. You can often show up a few minutes before class starts and be ready to workout vs. having to find a place to park in a massive lot, checking in, and then fighting for a spot in a large class. Broomfield is home to many small group training centers and boutique fitness studios such as CrossFit Profectus, Obstacle Destruction, CycleBar, Orange Theory, Core Power Yoga, and more. Another favored fitness activity that continues to be popular are boot camps. Boot camps appeal to a wide variety of people for many reasons. Boot camps usually incorporate numerous components of fitness including strength, cardio, agility, core, and more. Participants enjoy being able to get a complete all body workout in just one class. Boot camps are also appealing as various fitness levels and abilities can participate. With no complicated choreography to follow, participants can often work at their own pace while being challenged by the instructor. Completing different drills and exercises, sometimes in pairs or small groups adds camaraderie and enjoyment to the workout. In the spring and summer when weather permits, boot camps can be taken outside for new level of challenge, enjoyment, and motivation. Using equipment at parks such as benches, monkey bars, and other playground equipment, outdoor boot camps can almost feel like playing vs. working out. Adult summer boot camps are offered throughout Broomfield. Obstacle Destruction, a personal training studio located at 8 Garden Center in Broomfield will be offering boot camp style small group training this summer. The class will be held both indoor at the studio as well as

The class is geared towards all fitness levels and will be an all body workout with both cardio and strength components. Chad Johnson, owner and a certified trainer, grew up in Broomfield and loves serving the community. Chad states that what makes Obstacle Destruction classes unique is the fact that they can utilize both the indoor and outdoor space. “We also have created a tight knit community within the walls, but it is always open to anyone and everyone.” Check out their website at www.obstacledestruction.com for dates, times, and more information on the upcoming classes. The City of Broomfield Recreation Center will also be offering boot camps this summer. They will be held on Monday and Wednesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. on the hill and the lawn behind the Recreation Center. They will also be offered at 5:15 a.m. and 6:15 a.m. at the Championship Field at the County Commons Park. All boot camps are led by certified personal trainers and participants can choose how many days they would like to participate. Sessions will run for six weeks and registration will open April 11 for residents on B-Rex.com. CrossFit Profectus located off 287 on Alter Street offers small group training classes throughout the year. CrossFit incorporates numerous components of fitness including strength, cardiovascular training, mobility, flexibility, and gymnastics, similar to a traditional boot camp class. Coach Graem Haarbye will often have participants running and doing other various exercises outside when the weather is nice.

GETAWAY

Nearby Colorado

SPRING BREAK Getaways By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS

When conjuring up images of vacation, many often dream of sitting on an exotic beach somewhere. But grand beach vacations are not always practical or affordable, and scheduling an extensive vacation can be a challenge. Often to recharge we might just need a few days away from our regular routine. We are very fortunate that Colorado has so many amazing places to visit and many of them are closer than you think!

If

you are looking for a place close to Broomfield, Nederland is only a thirty-minute drive away. Abby Leeper, Communications Manager of the Colorado Tourism Office said that Nederland is mostly known as a stop on the way to the nearby Indian Peaks and the James Peak Wilderness areas, as well as a center for shopping and dining along the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway. Eldora Mountain Resort, just outside of Nederland is a great family ski and snowboard area with backcountry snowshoeing and cross-country skiing as well. Check out the visitor center in the heart of town with information about the nearby state and national parks, places to stay and eat, maps, hiking destinations, campgrounds, and local events. Abby mentioned that “Frozen Dead Guy Days in March, which salutes a Norwegian man who was cryogenically frozen after his death in the late 1980s with coffin races, a costumed polar plunge, and other icy entertainment, is one of Nederland’s most popular events.” Another recommendation from Abby is Idaho Springs which is about forty minutes away from Broomfield. Originally a mining town and home to Tommyknocker Brewery and Beau Jo’s Colorado Style Pizza, Idaho Springs still has a working mine at the Phoenix Gold Mine where you can even try gold panning yourself! Most well-known for its hot springs, you can either visit the geothermal springs and caves for the day, or stay at the Indian Springs Resort.

28

THE BROOMFIELDER™ MARCH 2019

If you are looking to travel just a little bit further, think beyond the popular ski resort towns along the I-70 corridor. Buena Vista, about two hours and 45 minutes from Broomfield is an outdoor adventurer’s mecca. Cross-country skiing, ice fishing, and snowshoeing are just a few of the activities Buena Vista offers. In the warmer months, you can fill your days with hiking, kayaking, white water rafting, and more!

Heading south from Broomfield, Colorado Springs is full of adventure for the entire family. Outdoor enthusiasts can hike in the Garden of the Gods or visit Pikes Peak. Sport fans can visit the Olympic Training Center. Families with younger children can spend the night at Great Wolfe Lodge, a themed hotel and indoor water park. If you want to continue south, Cañon City and the Royal Gorge Region is a popular destination. Abby recommended visiting the Royal Gorge Bridge as well as taking a ride on the train and rafting in one of the nation’s most popular spots for white water. The Royal Gorge Bridge is one of the world’s highest suspension bridges. Abby said, “Those seeking more adrenaline-fueled experiences should book time on the Royal Rush Skycoaster. After a 50mph free fall, the coaster hangs you over the canyon’s rim with only the river below. Recently added attractions include a new aerial gondola that gently whisks riders from one side of the canyon to the other and a Cloudscraper Zip Line that also flies you above the Arkansas.” The Royal Gorge Route Railroad runs along the base of the canyon and has several classes of service, spectacular dining options, a bar car, glass-topped dome car, murder-mystery, and beer and wine excursions, Mother’s Day brunch, Santa Express, and other holiday events!

Anna Lucero, Travel Professional at Wee Travel mentioned a few of her recommended destinations. Mt. Princeton Hot Springs which is about a two- and half-hour drive from Broomfield is located in Nathrop, Colorado. Mt. Princeton Hot Springs Resort is an ideal place for families or romantic getaways. There are multiple lodging options from luxury cabins for larger groups or hotel rooms with varying views. Anna said, “Our clients like everything about this resort. They especially like the creek fed hot spring. It gives you the space to experience nature at its best. The surrounding beauty, is a plus.” Another getaway location, though a bit further away recommended by Wee Travel is Kebler Corner situated on the West Elk Scenic Byway. Anna stated, “Tucked away between mountains and a river runs through the property. Perfect place to unplug, no electronics necessary. Adventure and tranquility await you!”

Whether you are looking for adventure for the entire family or just a few days to relax with your partner, Colorado has plenty to offer.

LOCAL

Be A Broomfield

SPRING BREAK TOURIST By Bette Erickson

We all have that friend: She’s so together. She’s fit. She follows a low-fat, gluten-free, responsibly grown diet (from local farmers). She eats Artisan breads, meats, and cheese that come from freerange, grass-fed cows. You know what I mean. (And I eat Pop-Tarts for breakfast.) But Broomfield: I know Broomfield. So I’m here to share with you all the very best spots to tourist in Broomfield during Spring Break. My fit and fabulous friend loves me, not for the food I eat, but for the fun we have right here in the City and County of Broomfield. Consider all there is to do.

E

ntertainment options abound. Our 1STBANK Center offers concerts and more – go to www.1stbankcenter.com for a list of upcoming events. And the ‘Audi’ packs in more events per year than there are days (that’s right, it’s not unusual for a turn-around of two events per day at the venue). Visit www.broomfield.org/242/AudiEvents for information. Few things compare to a leisurely stroll through a museum and Broomfield has two worth considering. The Veteran’s Museum is centrally located on Midway Blvd. (www.broomfieldveterans.com) and the famed historical Depot Museum is located just blocks away (www.broomfield.org/120/Broomfield-Depot-Museum).

Visit www.amctheatres.com/movie-theatres/denver/ amc-flatiron-crossing-14 for a list of current movies playing. Bowling at Chipper’s Lanes (100 Nickel St.) has league bowling and youth programming, including an arcade and food. A Broomfielder magazine 2018 Talk of the Town Readers Choice, the venue has laser tag, live music, and takes party reservations as well. More information can be found at www.chipperslanes.com. And no Spring Break would be complete without a picnic in the park. How about exploring Broomfield’s very own public art Sculpture Trail? Go to www.Broomfield.org/2328/ Broomfield-Sculpture-Trail, to be treated to a preview of the magnificent public art. The trail is in Broomfield’s County Commons and is near a playground, a life-size gorilla statue and the Dog Park (www. broomfield.org/Facilities/Facility/Details/39). While you’re at it, consider a hike along one of Broomfield’s more than 250miles of trails laced in and around the city. To get inspired, visit www.broomfield.org/1335/Broomfield-Trails-Map.

Whether you take a healthy snack out with you during your chosen adventure, or not-so-healthy snack, bring a friend, and enjoy all there is to love about Broomfield.
