FROM THE

Summer

in Broomfield The late May snowy weather might have placed some doubts, but summer has arrived!

A

t my house, it is evident by my children arriving home from college and the relaxed smile on my teacher husband’s face that comes after the end of the school year. Mother’s Day planting was delayed (see snowy weather), and the yard is in need of some overall repair due to the springtime backyard mischief of the puppy who joined our home last fall, but yard tidying is coming soon (see teacher husband). The inside of the home is also in need of some organzing (see children arriving home). Somehow in one year of college, belongings manage to multiply, and both of my girls are in the midst of thinning out items. Mom is anxious for all of these tasks to move to completion! The outdoor furniture has yet to be uncovered and placed, but soon the chairs will be back around the fire pit beckoning us to sit together listening to music and enjoying a beverage or two. I am ready to relax there with my tribe looking up at the moon peeking between over the roof and between the trees, and escaping the day in the quiet of our own simple backyard sanctuary. For fresh ideas on getting your outdoor area ready for summer, see our article on page 34. Your backyard awakening likely includes uncovering and cleaning up the grill to start the summer cooking season. However, for those nights when dinner out is a more attractive option, we offer our Broomfield Dining Guide on page 20. If you would like to sample some of Broomfield’s local cuisine and find a new favorite food destination in a festival atmosphere, don’t miss Taste It Broomfield on June 27. The Broomfielder is proud to sponsor this annual event with the Broomfield Chamber of Commerce and you can find all of the details on page 18 and tickets are on sale now at www. BroomfieldChamber.com. Summer in Broomfield means music! See page 30 for a preview of top acts coming to several of our local venues this season. Many of these events are free and family friendly and provide a great opportunity to get outdoors, enjoy new music, and mingle with friends and neighbors. It is time for our annual call for photos of Broomfield’s most adorable pets! Each year in our July Pets Issue we published select photos of favorite Broomfield pets. Will you furry, fluffy or feathery friend make the cut? Send your high-resolution digital photo to graphics@loudmouthmedia.com by June 10. Include your name and your pet’s name. One lucky pet will appear on our cover and other photos will be used throughout the issue.

HAPPENINGS

COMMUNITY JUNE 03 Start the summer by saying yes to fun and health! Teens – The City of Broomfield is holding “Hand It In” from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on June 3. Broomfield residents 18-years-old and younger are invited to hand in their vaping device at the Paul Derda Recreation Center in exchange for a FREE three-month Recreation Pass with no questions and no judgment. Tobacco use is the number one preventable cause of death and disease in the United States, including in the state of Colorado. Tobacco use causes cancer, heart disease, and emphysema, harms reproductive health, and damages nearly every organ in the human body. With grant funding from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, the Broomfield Tobacco Education and Prevention Partnership uses a comprehensive approach to prevent vaping and tobacco use among youth, encourage quitting among youth and adults, and eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke. Colorado leads the nation in youth use of vapor products, with 27 percent of teens currently vaping. In Broomfield and Boulder counties, 36 percent of teens report vaping. Broomfield Public Health and Environment staff are partnering with schools and youth-serving organizations to educate the community about the risks of vaping. Encourage your teen to say “YES,” to better health and “Hand It In” this summer.

Pool Safety Tips

for a Fun Summer in the Sun By Sara Farris

After a long winter, the temperatures are finally warming up. That means it is time to hit the pool! Whether going to a community pool or neighbor’s pool, or enjoying a swim in your own backyard, North Metro Fire Rescue District wants to remind parents of some important tips to keep kids safe around the pool this summer. •

Watch kids when they are in or around water, without being distracted. Keep young children within arm’s reach of an adult. Make sure older children swim with a partner every time. Never leave a child unattended. Remember, that children make noise when they are playing in the water. When it’s quiet is when something could be wrong.

Teach children how to swim. Every child is different. Enroll children in swim lessons when they are ready. Consider their age, development, and how often they are around water.

Install fences around home pools. A pool fence should surround all sides of the pool and be at least four feet tall with self-closing and self-latching gates.

Avoid drain entrapments. Make sure children don’t play or swim near drains or suction outlets, especially in spas and

shallow pools. Notify personnel if you notice a drain cover is broken, loose or missing, and do not enter the pool. •

Enforce water safety rules. Especially no running, pushing or dunking. Also remind kids to never falsely claim to need help in the water.

Empty kids’ pools after each use. Store them upside down, so they do not collect water.

Remember to wear sunscreen. It protects your skin from UV rays, and it lowers the risk of skin cancer.

Know what to do in an emergency. There have been kids rescued by bystanders right here in Broomfield and Northglenn. Learning CPR and basic water rescue skills may help you save a child’s life. Have a phone close by at all times, and call 911 immediately in case of an emergency. Don’t hesitate to provide CPR until first responders arrive if the child is not breathing or unresponsive.

on’t miss the tasting extravaganza designed around a festive street vendor ambiance created within the 1STBANK Center, featuring live music, food and beverage offerings from local establishments, and an opportunity to learn about Broomfield’s many great non-profits and community organizations on display at the event. Vendors will represent numerous food genres through some of our own local breweries, wineries, and distilleries, and we have a sneak peek at some of the sampling in store. Protect Your Heirs! (PART 1 OF 6) Avoid Probate  Reduce Taxes  Feel Secure

Plans That Work. People Who Care. Estate Planning  Wills  Trusts Business Planning Efficient Probate and Trust Administration Serving our client family since 1996 Offices in Brighton and Westminster 303.654.0100 www.EstatePlansThatWork.com

Mary had been through so much with Bill’s illness. After almost a year, it had taken him from her. Then came the accident. As Mary turned off the highway she was struck by a young driver. His serious injury seemed to be entirely his own fault, until a lawsuit convinced a jury that Mary’s turn signals were not working properly, shifting legal liability to her. The resulting claim far exceeded her auto insurance limits, and even after the insurance paid $1,000,000 to the injured driver, she was staring at a court judgment of more than $800,000. Her lawyer told her their savings and Bill’s life insurance proceeds were going to be wiped out, and a lien would be placed on the family home. Mary was looking at bankruptcy. Then she learned the good news.

The Truth About Estate Planning™ Workshop

Bill and Mary had sought legal advice when they first learned of his illness. The first lawyer they spoke with said they did not need estate planning. He told them to just “Put everything in joint tenancy.” They weren’t comfortable with that advice, and sought advice from a counseling oriented attorney who took the time to learn more about them, their estate, and their goals.

Come and learn about your planning options, including costs, without obligation. You’ll also learn how you can create a plan tailored to your needs by working with people who know you personally and truly care about you and your family. Workshop dates are listed below. Space is limited, and reservations are required, so call to make your reservation today. Workshops may not be held in our offices.

Bill’s primary objective was to protect Mary when he died. As Mary was winding up Bill’s affairs, she realized that upon his death, the savings, his life insurance and the home would not come directly to her in her own name, but would be put in trust. Mary would control the trust, but it would protect the assets from legal claims. While he had no idea what claims might arise, Bill’s foresight was now going to really pay off.

THURSDAY, JUNE 6TH AT 6PM  WESTMINSTER TUESDAY, JUNE 18TH AT 6:30PM  BRIGHTON

Summer Fun

AT THE LIBRARY

By Bette Erickson

Many of us already know that Broomfield’s Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library is a gem. It’s a place where residents gather, where students meet, where parents and caregivers find engaging and educational programs for their children, and where neighbors seeking a quiet space can focus. With each visit to our library, I notice a vibrant, energetic atmosphere with people of all ages and varying lifestyles making good use of this free, municipal amenity. And so, for these reasons and more, when making summer plans, be sure to include participating in some fun-filled activities sponsored by Broomfield’s Mamie Doud Eisenhower Public Library. From toddler read-alouds to more mature Wednesdays on the Waterfront – you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the number of free events offered through Broomfield’s library.

Here are just a few of this summer’s events: 28

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JUNE 2019

June 8, Spring Book Sale The Broomfield Library Friends Foundation is offering a tantalizing array of remarkably inexpensive books. You’ll want to bring a sturdy, canvas bag in which to haul your load. The event is from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Broomfield library, 3 Community Park Road, and will be spread out in the library lobby, upstairs in the Eisenhower Room, and outside the building (weather permitting).

Summer Reading Program The library’s popular annual Summer Reading Program offers elements for children, teens, and adults, combined into what’s now called the Summer Library Adventures. A Summer Library Adventures Kickoff Party will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 1 at the library, and is free to the public. Learn specifics about the Summer Library Adventures while enjoying time with friends, access to library staff, music, outdoor activities, art, and more. For information call 720-8872300 or visit the library in June to join the program. To craft this year’s program, staff from the library, the Depot Museum, the Cultural Affairs department, and inventHQ started discussing all the activities happening this summer and identified opportunities to collaborate. They realized what was needed was a program providing opportunities for participants to experience math, science, art, design, performance, and history in addition to reading. This approach sparked the name change from the Summer Reading Program to Summer Library Adventures. "Participants can select their own books to read throughout the summer,” explained Esther Knox-Stutsman, Programming Supervisor - Librarian II. “If they need suggestions, we have book lists and other resources to use to help them find the perfect book.” In addition to reading, the program also challenges participants to volunteer in the community, spend time outdoors, participate in city events, and more. In the past, the library staff offered separate programs for children, teens, and adults; but this year they’ve combined the different programs so that all ages are doing the same activities. There are different prizes for each age group. The baby program still offers a separate and unique program.

Wednesdays on the Waterfront

Join your friends and neighbors each Wednesday evening at the Community Park Amphitheater beginning at 7:00 p.m., June 12 through July 31. The free summer concert series is for all ages and visitors are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and a picnic dinner. In the event of inclement weather, the concert may be moved into the nearby Broomfield Auditorium. No need to pre-register. For more information, go to www.broomfield.org/summerconcerts.

Escape from Mars at the Museum Feeling adventurous? Consider gathering some family and friends to participate in an escape room. The challenge: Your space colony on Mars had an explosion and now you have to escape to your rescue train before you run out of oxygen … or get eaten by aliens! The event is free and open to the public. Note: Events that do not meet minimum registration or attendance may be canceled. Summer Season Sprinkles

Outdoor Music Across the Area By Kristen Beckman

Several local venues offer summer concert series beginning this month, featuring local musical talent in a casual environment to enjoy with friends and family.

Wednesdays on the Waterfront The Broomfield Cultural Affairs Department’s Wednesdays on the Waterfront concert series starts June 12. All ages are welcome to bring a picnic dinner and blanket to sit on, and enjoy a variety of musical talents at Community Park. Food trucks will be on hand on concert nights to provide treats and sweets before and during the concerts. Cheryl German, Cultural Affairs Operations coordinator for the City and County of Broomfield, said the cultural affairs team looks for a diverse group of performers that will appeal to a wide variety of Broomfield tastes with a goal of providing a concert series that is entertaining and accessible to everyone. Up first in the series is Born to Run, a Springsteen Tribute Band that remains true to the Boss’ energy, spirit and music. Later, on June 19, 300 Days, a threeyear-old bluegrass band dazzles with fiery original tunes complete with fiddle, mandolin, and guitar will take the stage. In July, don’t miss rising Colorado country star Richie Law on July 10, or seven-piece-band Deja Blu on July 24 with its mix of contemporary hits, Motown, R&B, classic rock, and country songs. Other acts throughout the summer include guitarist and contemporary blues artists Bobby Messano, 80s band Raising Cain, Latin guitarist David Correa and the quirky stylings of Zoltan and the Fortune Tellers. “The summer concerts provide an ideal gathering place for the community to listen, dance, and enjoy the Colorado evening with friends, family, and

neighbors,” said Kathryn Lynip, deputy director of Library and Cultural Affairs. “These concerts have been going on for a number of years and as the Broomfield Town Square grows up around the pond and amphitheater, we envision many such opportunities for the community to gather and engage with local artists and musicians.” To see the full line-up visit: www.broomfield.org/2549/Summer-Concert-Series.

Fun at The Orchard The Orchard will host a free summer concert series presented by St. Anthony North Health Campus. All shows are on Saturday nights, June 1 through August 24, on The Orchard’s Town Center Drive. Visitors are invited to bring a lawn chair and food from an Orchard restaurant and enjoy musical fare ranging from pop and rock to R&B, and jazz to country. Kicking off the series on June 1 is Tunisia, a dynamic show that covers many styles, ranging from current hits to classic rock. Also scheduled to perform in June is dance band The Radio, country band Narrow Gauge, Eagles tribute band The Long Run, and 70s/80s/90s rock band Last Men on Earth. In July, David Bowie tribute band Loving the Alien is scheduled to take the stage, along with big brass party band Wash Park, 90s hit band Blink 90210, and R&B band Thumpin’. And in August, enjoy tribute band Legendary Hitchhikers, rock/ country band Grant Farm, vocal rock band Face, and That Eighties Band. In addition to its annual Summer Concert Series, The Orchard has launched a new recurring event for families – Friday Night Family Fun – on The Orchard entertainment stage. Families can watch and even participate in family game nights including Family Feud and Name that Tune, comedy shows, talent showcases, lip sync battles, a princess show, and a USO tribute to veterans on July 5. Food can be purchased from Orchard restaurants during the events. The event series wraps up in August with The Orchard’s Got Talent competition.

SIMPLE AND AFFORDABLE

BACKYARD REFRESHES FOR SUMMER DAYS & NIGHTS OUTDOORS By Elizabeth Buckingham

Nicer weather is here, and that means more time spent outdoors. However, if you are not finding a sanctuary in your own backyard, it might be time for a refresh, and you don’t need to spend thousands to create a warm, welcoming space for family and friends. As with any home renovation project, first identify your goals. Do you want to grow your own food? Do you frequently host backyard gatherings? Do you want to create a quiet, peaceful sanctuary? Be honest about the amount of work you’re willing to put in, and whether that work is how you want to spend your free hours. A perfectly manicured emerald lawn and extensive flower beds can require a great deal of time and money to maintain. If you don’t have room in your schedule and budget for that kind of commitment, consider lower-maintenance landscaping or maybe even removing your lawn entirely. You want to enjoy your outdoor space, not be held prisoner by it. (Check with your HOA, if you have one, before embarking on a major renovation.)

34

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JUNE 2019

Start by tidying up. Go through your garden, backyard, garage, and any outdoor storage spaces and get rid of anything you no longer need or use. This might include outgrown kids’ toys, extra plant pots, tools or unused sports equipment. Sell or donate these items, then give your outdoor space a good scrub. Power-wash concrete areas, clean furniture, trim overgrown bushes, and weed aggressively. A thorough cleaning and tidying session will add sparkle to your outdoor area.

Think color in other areas, too – use a bright, durable outdoor rug on a deck or patio. Cheerful cushions are available in a variety of fun outdoor fabrics; even if your primary interior decorating tones are all shades of beige, it’s easy to take chances on punchy outdoor decor. Pots of colorful annuals or delicious herbs will brighten your outdoor space immensely; just don’t forget to water and deadhead as needed, especially if they’re placed in full sun. If you’re buying new plants, go to a reputable local garden center rather than a big-box store. Certain plants grow better here than others, and there’s no reason to waste your money on a blueberry bush when a native plant would survive much better. Plus, planting pollinator-friendly choices means your backyard will soon be a haven not just for you but for birds and beneficial insects, too!

Take a close look at your fence – has it seen better days? Fencing has improved remarkably over the past decade; there are now hundreds of sleek, modern, low-maintenance options that will stand up to our harsh sun and heavy winds. Repair and replace damaged planks or posts, and repaint, if possible. If you need more growing space, consider creating a vertical garden on your fence with small pots of tasty kitchen herbs or other summer plants. Next, create zones. If you have the space, consider making one area for dining, one for quiet relaxation, one for kids and one for edible gardening. You can gently separate these zones by creating a path with paving stones, or by planting perennial borders. Spread a fresh layer of mulch (which also minimizes weeding) where needed and use colorful potted plants to create natural living areas, like rooms in a house.

And don’t forget about lighting – one of the easiest and least expensive ways to upgrade your backyard is to hang strands of twinkle lights around trees, pergolas or eaves. Make those Christmas lights do double-duty as summertime decoration and turn your backyard into a hip downtown deck! If you spend a lot of time socializing outside, invest in good-quality, comfortable patio furniture, then take care of it. Big-box stores sell millions of cheap, flimsy chairs and tables every year; these rarely make it through a single season in Colorado’s extreme climate. If possible, store furniture and cushions out of the elements when not in use, or invest in a strong, secure cover. Never leave your umbrella out, or you may find that you’ve inadvertently donated it to a neighbor a few blocks down the road.

No matter what improvements you choose to tackle, remember that your house should be your sanctuary, and your backyard is simply an extension of that. Invest a little time and money in making your outdoor living space suit your lifestyle perfectly, and you’ll never want to leave home this summer. Visit us online at: www.TheBroomfielder.com

DOING SOME LANDSCAPI NG IN THE YARD THIS SUMMER? The City and County of Broomfield Stormwater Management Program would like to remind you that when conducting your landscaping projects, have your landscape material delivered in your driveway or find a staging area on your property. One of the leading causes of water pollution is landscaping material (rocks, compost, dirt, etc.) that is deposited in the curb and gutter. This kind of material can get washed away in stormwater runoff. The City and County of Broomfield works hard to maintain its storm sewer system and drainage ways. Storm sewers discharge directly into creeks, streams and ponds untreated. It is illegal and a violation of the Broomfield Municipal Code to dispose of or allow materials other than stormwater to discharge into the storm sewer system. Thank you for assisting the City and County of Broomfield in its efforts to keep our water clean. For more information, contact the Stormwater Management Program at 303.464.5648 or go to Broomfield.org/Wastewater
