FROM THE

PETS

Make a Home

I

n late 2017, we said goodbye to our second family dog after a battle with cancer; our yellow Lab named Eli. He was preceded in our home by a chocolate brown Lab named Kodi who was part of the family in the early years. We kind of have a thing for Labs. Eli left us as the family was in transition. Our younger daughter was soon to graduate high school and the seasonal “empty nest” that comes with having two kids in college was looming. I’ll be completely honest. I missed having a dog in the home. Our house suddenly became eerily quiet. No one greets you or loves you quite the way a Lab does – dutifully at your side and offering unconditional companionship. I DID like the house being clean. It is kind of my thing. Let’s face it. Labs shed a lot! The only plus of our petless home was a constantly clean floor. But I am being honest, and I really liked that part. The rest of it – missing our dog, kind of stunk. Through the spring of that first year, our about-to-graduate senior begged for a new dog! To which my husband and I, in a unified voice responded, “You are leaving for college soon. Who would take care of it?” Then, in early July, my husband started sharing photos of black Lab puppies in the family group text. I knew instantly, that without a conversation, a decision had been made. We were getting a new dog. I was not completely thrilled. Who would take care of it? And all that hair! In early August, we brought our daughter to college and two days later we picked up our new family member. Our new black Lab puppy, Ollie. He quickly won all of our hearts. The girls were both making excuses to come home to see him, and I found myself relaxing the dog rules that had previously been imposed on Eli and Kodi. Ollie was on our laps, on the couch, and shockingly even on the bed! There were numerous toys and treats and a clocklike play and walk schedule. I guess it is true what they say about the baby of the family being the most spoiled. For my husband and me, as new empty nesters, he was more than a welcome addition, he was necessary. I guess this is an example of why my husband is smarter than I am. Like a child, a dog is an anchor; something to bring you home and bring you together. With the kids growing up, he and I needed a new centering. Ollie does that job nicely. What’s wrong with a little dog hair lining the nest? And it is so good to be joyfully surrounded with unconditional love from someone who only wants to share happiness day in and day out, free from human complications. Why do people love their dogs so much? The reasons are many. For me this sums it up. Walls don’t make a home. It is about the beings inside the walls. A pet is a magical component.

Enjoy our annual Pet issue and thanks for reading,

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JULY 2019

Bill had lost his job, and with the extra time at home he discovered his wife's infidelity. Their marriage was over. Bill's father had died seven years prior and left him a substantial inheritance. Not believing that his wife could do such a thing, Bill had simply combined his inheritance with the other family assets. Unfortunately, in the divorce there was no way to determine what was the inheritance and what was the marital property. Being unable to determine the difference, the judge divided all of the assets between Bill and his unfaithful wife, including his inheritance. It didn't have to be this way. If Bill's father had done a thorough estate plan, he would have left the inheritance to Bill in trust. Bill would control the trust, but the trust would help him keep the inherited assets separate from the marital assets. If Bill used and enjoyed the assets inside the trust for his benefit, but did not draw them out, he could have easily identified the inherited assets in the divorce. As a result, the inherited assets would have been his separate property and would not have been divided. A properly designed estate plan can provide many additional advantages that protect your family. These types of protections are ignored in estate plans using cookie-cutter forms. Individuals should look closely at all of the benefits a properly designed estate plan can provide them while they are alive, and provide their families after their death. If you would like to learn more about an effective estate planning process that produces suitable results for families, attend one of our complementary workshops.

Metzger Farm This expansive open space property offers several miles of inter-connected gravel hiking routes, a dock, picnic pavilion, and designated parking area suitable for 40 vehicles. The 152-acre farm is a result of a municipal award-winning joint effort between the cities of Broomfield and Westminster. The public park, open from sunrise to sunset, offers dogs and their caregivers a valuable connector from existing Broomfield trails to the popular Big Dry Creek trail system maintained by Westminster. If you’re visiting Metzger Farm with a young puppy, consider a quick mile out and back jaunt along the trail from the north edge of the parking area. Continue east staying right to drop down by the pond’s spillway and crossing the bridge connecting to the Big Dry Creek Trail. Return the way you came. Alternatively, you could take a left where the trail forks just past the farmstead and head north looping around either by turning west or turning right (east) completing a larger circular route. To get there: Metzger Farm is located on the northeast corner of Lowell Blvd. and 120th Ave.

Woods Quarry via NCAR The dog-friendly route along the Mesa Trail from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in south Boulder stretches to one of Boulder’s most unique destinations: Woods Quarry. To begin the quick and easy outing, find the sign for the Mesa Trail and access the footpath by walking down a well-marked trail. Next, follow the trail up to a water storage tank and head north (stay right) along the Mesa Trail. This route only offers a few short inclines. Remember to stay left when you see the sign to Skunk Canyon and soon after is a tiny marker indicating Wood’s Quarry. Leave the Mesa Trail here by going left and making your final steep, stair climbing ascent to the quarry. Relax on the sandstone “chairs” before returning the way you came. To get there: Follow Table Mesa Dr. in Boulder west to its end at NCAR.

Green Mountain via Gregory Canyon Reaching the summit of Green Mountain via Gregory Canyon offers several miles of peaceful and forested terrain ideal for visitors with dogs. At the trailhead walk west, then veer left crossing Gregory Creek. This trek provides a formidable workout, gaining 2,344 feet in less than three miles. The entire route may not be wise for older dogs on hot summer, mid-days. Access the Amphitheater Trail eventually merging with the E.M. Greenman Trail. From here expect some frequent, rocky switchbacks and increasing steepness before reaching the summit.

McKay Lake Youngsters on bikes and dogs with their guardians love nearby McKay Lake. The open space is home to ancient, towering cottonwood and willow trees along the south side of the small lake and uninterrupted views of the mountains to the west. The leisurely 1.5-mile loop circling the lake is ideal for a quiet walk with curious canines. Runners, equestrians, and cyclists enjoy the route, also. From the parking area, go right along the single-track dirt path near the water and through the brush. Notice the interpretive sign and pier nearby. Fishing is allowed. You’ll briefly be walking alongside a fenced farm to access a wide social trail to the west of the lake, eventually coming upon the new south dam of McKay Lake. Walk east on the wide gravel route with those wonderful cottonwoods framing the trail. Be on the lookout for a variety of waterfowl that frequent this lake. Follow the footpath as it passes over the large spillway and make your way back to the parking area. To get there: A spacious parking lot is on the south side of 144th Ave. just west of Pecos St.

DAISY

Submitted by Audrey and Noelle Shorter

When you add a new pet to your family, it Is easy to get caught up in their youthful energy and inevitable cuteness. What you may not be thinking about during this exciting time are the costs you may face down the road to keep your new pet healthy.

C

hances are, at some point your pet will need veterinary care for an illness or injury. As they age, pets are increasingly likely to develop chronic illnesses, and injuries can affect pets of any age. When these situations occur, many pet owners find out the hard way that the price tag for treatment can be high. Often, pet owners are not prepared to absorb these costs, leaving them in the unfortunate position of having to make life or death decisions for their pet based on what they can afford rather than what the best treatment is. Pet insurance is an increasingly popular option to address veterinary costs. Like most insurance products, buying a policy isn’t necessarily about getting a dollar-fordollar return on your investment but instead about buying peace of mind. TJ Houk, chief member experience officer at pet insurer Trupanion, said the lucky group of pets and owners are those who pay premiums for pet insurance they never need to use, but for those who do find themselves facing a large veterinary bill, pet insurance can provide a welcome safety net. Trupanion, which pays out about 90,000 claims per month, tracks common conditions that lead to unexpected veterinary visits and their average costs. The largest driver of veterinary costs in puppies is vomiting and diarrhea, which may seem fairly simple but can end up costing hundreds of dollars to diagnose and treat. The second biggest driver of veterinary care for young dogs is ingestion of a foreign body, which can average $1,500 to treat. In older dogs, cranial cruciate ligament rupture is a common condition, and the cost to repair can range from $3,200 to $4,200.

How Much for Pet Healthcare? Most common claim conditions and average eligible per claim for dogs: •

Vomiting and diarrhea: $200-$400

Rupture of cranial cruciate ligament: $3,200-$4,200

Mass: $300-$600

Lameness & limping: $300-$400

Foreign Body Ingestion: $400-$900

Allergies: $100-$300

Gastroenteritis: $300-$500

Seizure: $400-$900

Otitis (ear infection): $100

Cats are also prone to foreign body ingestion, especially when they are young, and the cost to treat can top $2,000. Later in life, cats are especially prone to urinary-related illnesses and kidney disease, which can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars to treat. “We want people be able to say ‘yes’ when a vet makes a treatment recommendation,” said Dr. Carol McConnell, DVM, vice president and chief veterinary officer for Nationwide, which has offered pet insurance since 1982. “We encourage pet owners to look into insurance when their pet is younger and healthy, because you don’t know what’s around the corner, especially bringing a pet into a new home. You don’t know their personality. You don’t know if they are going to bolt out the front door to chase a squirrel or eat something they shouldn’t eat.” Trupanion’s Houk echoed those thoughts. “You never know what’s going to happen,” he said. “The best thing you can do is have a plan. Maybe that plan means buying insurance if you don’t have money in the bank to pay for an unexpected veterinary bill. You want to be able to take money out of the equation when thinking about caring for this four-legged member of your family.”

Most common claim conditions and average eligible per claim for cats: •

Vomiting and diarrhea: $300-$500

Kidney Disease: $500-$900

Lymphoma: $1,800-$3,300

Mass: $400-$800

Diabetes: $900-$1,500

Urinary tract infectious disease: $200-$400

Foreign body ingestion: $700-$1,700

Following are some considerations when shopping for pet insurance:

Weight decrease: $300-600

Urinary obstruction: $1,800-$2,500

Premiums for healthy puppies and kittens are typically lower than for older pets, and existing conditions are often excluded from coverage.

Hyperthyroidism: $400-$700

Premiums can vary based on the age, gender, and breed of your pet as well as your geographic location. Cats tend to be less expensive to insure, while larger dogs tend to be more expensive.

Some deductibles are per-incident, while other deductibles operate on an annual basis. Deductibles often may be raised or lowered to achieve a premium that fits your budget.

Some insurance plans pay the veterinarian directly and some require you to pay the bill and submit a claim after treatment for reimbursement.

Policies may include preventive care, usually at a higher premium, for pet owners who want broad coverage. Dental care also may be included in some policies.

Some policies pay on a benefit schedule despite actual costs, and some limit claims.

Ask your veterinarian as well as friends and family about their experience with pet insurance to get real-world advice about premiums, claims, and coverage.

Questions

to Ask Your Veterinarian By Elizabeth Buckingham

There’s no doubt about it: Coloradans love their pets. And every responsible pet owner knows that a great veterinarian makes life with furry friends safer, healthier, and easier. Whether you’ve had the same trusted vet for years or you’re new to the area, consider asking your vet any or all of these questions so you can be a better pet parent.

1. What is your philosophy of practice? While every veterinarian practice obviously loves animals, their care protocols might vary widely. Learning your vet’s philosophy of practice might be as simple as visiting their website and finding their mission statement, or it might require a face-to-face chat with a doctor. The practice’s goals should align with yours, and don’t be shy about scheduling an initial consultation to make sure the relationship is a good fit for everyone. 2. What sort of preventative health care do you offer? “As with people, it’s much easier to treat health problems in pets before they occur, rather than after,” says Dr. Dan Targoff, DVM, an associate veterinarian at Broomfield Veterinary Hospital. Learn about your vet’s focus on preventative health care, and be willing to take your animals in regularly, rather than just in a crisis situation. 3. How often should I bring my pet in?

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JULY 2019

Again, prevention is always better than a cure, and a reputable veterinarian can recommend an appropriate schedule according to your pet’s breed, age, and other needs. Ensuring that your animal is up-to-date on shots, vaccines, check-ups, and other routine care helps keep it (and you!) calm, happy, and healthy.

4. Is my pet at a healthy weight? The hard truth is that most domestic pets are overweight; this is primarily a result of a sedentary lifestyle and too many treats, including lots of unhealthy “people food.” Overweight cats and dogs are at much higher risk for various diseases, and their natural life spans will almost certainly be shortened. Ask whether your pet is carrying excess weight, and if so, what you can do about it. 5. What food should my pet eat? Pet food offers just as many mixed messages and aggressive marketing campaigns as human food, and it’s hard to know what the right choice might be. “Choose quality pet food that corresponds with your pet’s age,” says Dr. Targoff. “The food shouldn’t cause any digestive upsets, and your pet should be reasonably enthusiastic about consuming it.” Look for the AAFCO statement, a federally-regulated pet food label that offers information about the validity of the product’s claims and the scientific research behind it.

6. When and how much should my pet eat? Like most veterinarians, Dr. Targoff supports ‘meal feeding’ rather than ‘free feeding.’ “Because many domestic animals are overweight, providing Lucy a set quantity of food at specific times during the Submitted by Alan Markowitz day, rather than a bowl of food that’s constantly available, helps decrease the amount of calories consumed.” Find out how much and how often your pet should eat, and of course, all animals should always have access to an abundant supply of fresh, clean water. 7. Are my animal’s teeth and gums healthy?

303.252.7722

945 W. 124th Ave. Westminster 80234 www.emergencypetclinics.com

ANESTHESIA-FREE TEETH CLEANING FOR DOGS & CATS

Dogs and cats often develop periodontal disease because their teeth typically aren’t cleaned as often as ours. Find out if your animal needs special care for its teeth and gums; left untreated, bacteria can potentially lead to tooth loss, lesions, and organ failure. 8. Is my pet getting enough exercise and/or stimulation? Our busy lives mean that most domestic animals are left alone for hours and hours each day. Since they’re naturally pack animals, this feeling of abandonment can lead to behavioral issues, such as barking, scratching, and chewing. Ask your vet how you can offer your individual animal appropriate stimulation and exercise. Remember that regular walks are beneficial for your health, too! 9. Is a pet right for my family?

Lucky

Submitted by Katherine Boll

Maybe you don’t even own a dog or a cat, but you’re considering adding one to your household. Talk to a local vet and find out if particular breeds or species are right for you, and what costs you might incur. Most pets require a considerable commitment of time and money, and it’s helpful to have as much information as possible before jumping in. Veterinarians are animal experts, and they want to make sure that you and your pets enjoy a long, healthy life together!

Lost Pets Easily Find Way Home with Modern Technology Solutions By Tina Eichner

Losing a pet or having your pet get loose and run away, can be a very frightening experience for both pets and owners. According to the American Humane Association more, than 10 million American pets are lost or stolen each year! Many of us remember the days when a distraught pet owner would plaster neighborhood store windows and light poles with signs declaring: “Lost Dog.” And you would not think of risking having your dog out and about without a collar and dog tag – just in case. Today, thanks to continually evolving technology solutions, these worrisome experiences can be avoided. The possible options are numerous, ranging from tags and collars to electronic chips. Pet name tags originated more than 200 years ago, but new offerings have elevated the pet tag far beyond a simple tracking or identification device.

Pawscout A new solution now available at your local Wal-Mart, is Pawscout, the Smarter Pet Tag. Pawscout is smartphone-compatible, connected, affordable, and an easy and fun way for people to build a safe community for their pets. The tag tracks walk distances, and uses live maps so people can easily spot their pet in real-time as long as the pet is within a 300-foot range of anyone with the Pawscout App. For extra security, a virtual leash can be set to warn owners if Fido decides to scamper out of view. Pawscout also: •

Sends “Amber Alerts” to local users if your pet goes missing so they can be on the lookout

Allows connection with other users to coordinate walks and playdates

Connects to an app and alerts users if their dog gets out of a designated area

Helps users find pet-friendly hotspots like restaurants, hotels, etc.

Creates a community of pet owners by allowing social sharing, liking photos, etc.

Pawscout tags are available on www.pawscout.com, priced at $19.95 with no monthly fees and the Pawscout App is available for download in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

Microchips Microchipping is a permanent method of electronic identification now popular with many pet owners. The chip is extremely tiny and is inserted just under the skin, right between your pet’s shoulder blades or the back of its neck. Each microchip has a number that can be scanned by a microchip scanner. The unique tracking number in each chip is stored in a database that includes the owner’s details and the pet’s name. The insertion procedure is reported to be fast, easy, and creates little discomfort for the animal. The American Veterinary Medical Association said that the likelihood of relocating a lost microchipped animal is 74%, with the percentage dropping dramatically for unchipped pets. But do your homework; make sure that the chip solution you choose is indeed tracked by your local Animal Control department. And if inserting a chip into your pet seems too drastic, remember that there are many other less intrusive solution.

As we have noted numerous times in this edition of our annual pet issue, people love their pets! And people love other people’s pets too. The modern version of posters on light poles is Nextdoor.com where almost daily you can hear about pets, lost and found, as shared by caring pet owners. While the thousands upon thousands of eyes available through today’s communications networks and channels make finding your pet much more likely, for extra security, a tagging or chip solutions is something to explore.

GPS Trackers There are numerous collars and tags using GPS trackers on the market, where a GPS chip in the tracker monitors your pet’s position and transmits data to your smartphone, with an app to display your pet’s location on a map. These collar- and tag-style GPS trackers range from $50 to $250 with some requiring a monthly subscription. Note that many also require frequent recharging and that some can be bulky. Highly-rated products include Whistle 3 and Findster.

Broomfield’s

Flower Lady Keeps City Colorful, Vibrant By Megan Eichner

If you have ever seen and admired the beautiful flower displays around Broomfield, then you have noticed the work of Debra Pfaff. She is known to many as “The Flower Lady” of Broomfield, and she is responsible for creating and maintaining the beautiful flower displays around the city, which total 75 flower beds and 74 planters for this year. As the senior horticulture technician for the parks department, Debra is responsible for the maintenance of the landscaping features throughout the year.

I

n the spring, she prepares all of the beds for planting to eventually create the beautiful summer displays. During the summer months, her duties include maintaining the flower beds and planters, planning new landscapes, and renovating older landscapes. After the vibrant summer season, she removes the annual flowers and replaces them with pansies and spring bulbs to extend the colors into the cooler season. Even in the winter when there are no flowers to tend to, Debra is hard at work planning new flower beds arrangements for the upcoming spring, as well as performing winter maintenance on perennial beds. Along with these duties, she is also responsible for landscape contract projects and shrub replacement programs. Debra said her daily duties, “change throughout the season according to the needs of the bed and planters, as well as the new landscape around the city.” Debra uses her wealth of knowledge and experience to plan the displays in the flower bed annually. She has been responsible for design and maintenance since 2001, and uses her experience to create vibrance and variation in the flower beds around town. Debra explained that most of the displays consist of “hardy plants that do not need a lot of water but are still bright and beautiful. These plants work best for the area that we live in and last longer through our hot and dry summers. The variation in displays comes from color choices, textures, height, and public popularity.” Debra often asks for input from the community to see which displays and flowers people have enjoyed most so that she can plan for more well-loved displays. The plant and flower selection process is also influenced by the CSU Trial Gardens, which Debra both references from and contributes to using her own flower beds. When it comes to new displays, Debra has to consider different needs, locations, and budgets. Sometimes this work is not to create all new beds, but to move or update an existing one. Location is incredibly important to the creative design of flower

beds, and influences the types and colors of plants and flowers that go into a bed. Take for example the Broomfield County Commons, which Debra likes to accent with shades of red, white, and blue because the parks hold the main Fourth of July events. Each display is carefully and thoughtfully planned to best suit the area which it serves. Occasionally Debra is also asked to design and install memorial gardens. She said that these experiences have allowed her to “connect with some wonderful people from the Broomfield community.” She loves to learn the history behind these memorial flower beds. Debra appreciates when people comment on the flower beds because their opinions help her understand what plants people enjoy most. And she enjoys knowing that people enjoy all of the results of her hard work. This influences her planning for the following seasons. Her

favorite time to enjoy the displays is during the late summer when everything is in full bloom. At that time Debra both admires their beauty and analyzes their growth to see which plants flourished in their beds. As for residents’ gardens, Debra recommends focusing on plants that grow naturally in the local environment. This generally means plants with low water needs. These include native Colorado grasses, which can add variety to personal pots and flower beds. She also recommends experimenting with different colors and textures to make gardens more interesting and unique. Once the plants are in the ground, she said, “de-heading the flowers and frequent fertilization” are crucial for keeping plants healthy and alive through the summer. This will help your own gardens look as stunning as the ones which Debra creates around the city. The Flower Lady of Broomfield brings unparalleled life and vibrance to our community through her dedication to the flower beds and planters around town. We appreciate her creativity and knowledge, which make the Broomfield landscape one of a kind during every season of the year.

Sweet & Refreshing

Patriotic Snacks By Family Features

There’s no time like Broomfield’s “Great American Picnic” to let your patriotic spirit show. These all-American snacks featuring a classic favorite fruit – watermelon – are the perfect solution for both it, and any other summertime celebration. Watermelon is a patriotic picnic staple for countless reasons, not the least of which is that it’s a beloved treat that many people associate with memories from childhood. However, nostalgia isn’t the only reason adults are just as likely to gravitate toward watermelon at a summer event. Its sweet, cool and refreshing flavor also makes it a favorite for all ages.

1 cup blueberries

12 wooden skewers

1 container (6 ounces) Greek yogurt (vanilla, lemon or coconut)

1 seedless watermelon, flesh cut into 1-inch cubes

1 angel food cake, cut into 1-inch cubes (white part only)

1 cup watermelon, plus three pieces diced watermelon

Dips, such as yogurt, chocolate, caramel or marshmallow (optional)

Whipped cream, for serving

Directions:

Directions: 1. In pint canning jar, layer blueberries, yogurt and 1 cup watermelon. Top with whipped cream and garnish with three diced watermelon pieces. 2.
