Harnessing the Sun:

Colorado’s Sunny Climate Can Mean Energy Savings for Broomfield

Colorado boasts more than 300 sunny days per year, making it a great place to live for those who enjoy plentiful Vitamin D year-round. The state’s abundance of sun also makes it an attractive place to install solar energy systems, an opportunity many homeowners consider in an effort to reduce energy costs and make a positive impact on the environment.

FROM THE

PUBLISHER

Digital Life In

1990 I was studying journalism at Colorado State University (CSU) and had secured a part-time job at a small local publishing company where I ran errands and literally dumped the trash. I was hoping that the odd jobs might someday lead to my first career writing job – which they did – but that is not what this story is about. The company was called Geographic Information Systems (GIS) World. It was started by a former CSU cartography professor who was exploring the then nascent world of digital mapping, or GIS. He also had an interest in another new technology that few knew about at that point – The World Wide Web. Another part of my job was gathering mailed press releases and helping copy them so they could be “posted” to the magazine company’s website: GIS Online. Let me be clear – copying them meant retyping the first few paragraphs into a web page. What the user saw was just pages and pages of content with no organization or categorization – but it was all about GIS. They were paying me, so I did it, but I could not really fathom who would suffer the pain of dial-up service to look through dozens or hundreds of pages for information that may or not be relevant or useful. We promoted GIS Online by “mailing” postcards to inform people about this new data repository. So mailed content was retyped, and promoted by mail, in hopes that someone would look at it – online. Doesn’t this all sound odd to you? Not that I am a good judge. I also thought camera phones were crazy when I first learned about them as a young technology journalist. Of course, we all know what happened next. Twenty years or so of wired and wireless communications technology advancements that changed the world and transformed two behemoths of modern communication – the U.S. Postal Service and print media. Here at Loudmouth Media and The Broomfelder™, we still have great respect for both – mail and print – and we think that many of you do too (Thank you by the way). I hope you love the print version of the magazine as much as I do – and rest assured – the print magazine will continue and you will still get it in your mailbox every month! Yet the time has come to increase our reach and the frequency of our content, and this month we are proud to announce TheBroomfielder.com – our brand new online presence and your connection to everything that you love about The Broomfielder™ in real time, and where you are – at your desk, on your phone, or wherever you consume digital information. The site will include content from the print edition as well as original content and be an online archive for the print issues. You can read more about our plans on page 34. We will be building content over the next few months and would love to know what you think. Let me know at tina@loudmouthmedia.com. No stamp required.

Thanks for reading us – here AND online. Editor

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JANUARY 2019

Happy New Year from

The Broomfield Chamber! W

hen January rolls around everyone starts looking back at what they did the year before and what they can do better in the upcoming year. Like any successful business, your Broomfield Chamber of Commerce is doing the exact same thing. While I am writing this in December, we have gone through enough of the year to know what has gone well, what hasn’t, and hopefully we figure out how to make an even greater impact in 2019 on the issues our members say are important. In 2018 we put out an annual survey, and while many of the responses were expected, we got quite a lot of new feedback. Our highest rated program is our After Hours. This came from the hosts and guests alike. The hosts love showing off their location, and the guests like to visit businesses they have not been to before and being able to meet new people in the community. This program will not only continue, we will look for new ways to improve these events, and provide more networking opportunities. Other programs that had large support on the survey were our Member Spotlights and Ribbon Cuttings. This was interesting because we sometimes struggle to get people to attend. It seems businesses find value in having them and see the value in attending, but often are not able to attend for one reason or another. This is something we need to improve for our new and existing businesses. When it comes to business needs, the three biggest issues of 2018 will probably be the same for 2019: transportation, workforce housing, and lack of skilled workforce for the positions available. All three of these go hand in hand. The blessing of an increased number of high paying jobs means more people living here which reduces our housing stock, causing prices to go up. Many of these people, however, can’t afford to live here because housing pricing are increasing faster than wages and employees must buy or rent further away, putting an increased amount of traffic on our highways. And of course, these wonderful jobs drive down our unemployment rate making it harder for our businesses to fill positions. We don’t have a magic wand to solve these issues, but your Broomfield Chamber of Commerce will continue to work with the City and County of Broomfield, the North West Chamber Alliance, Commuting Solutions, our learning institutions, and other organizations to bring together stakeholders regarding these issues and work to keep Broomfield the business friendly community it is today.

Harnessing the

Sun: Colorado’s Sunny Climate Can Mean Energy Savings for Broomfield By Kristen Beckman

C

olorado boasts more than 300 sunny days per year, making it a great place to live for those who enjoy plentiful Vitamin D year-round. The state’s abundance of sun also makes it an attractive place to install solar energy systems, an opportunity many homeowners consider in an effort to reduce energy costs and make a positive impact on the environment. Colorado ranks 12th in the nation for installed solar capacity with more than 209,700 homes powered by solar, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association. While only about 3 percent of the state’s electricity is solar, more than $2.5 billion has been invested in solar throughout the state and prices for installations have fallen nearly 50 percent during the past five years.

20

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JANUARY 2019

About Solar There are two primary types of solar power systems used in residential applications, according to SEIA. Photovoltaic devices generate electricity directly from sunlight when photons strike and ionize semiconductor material on a solar panel. PV modules, typically installed on rooftops, do not contain moving parts and generally last 30 years or more with minimal maintenance. Solar heating and cooling technologies collect thermal energy from the sun and use this heat to provide hot water and space heating. Solar is an ideal energy source because it is essentially infinite, sustainable, environmentally friendly, and available everywhere. Harnessing solar energy allows homeowners and businesses to save money by reducing or eliminating the amount of power they draw from the electrical power grid, and solar power can sometimes earn homeowners money when surplus solar power is transferred back to the grid in exchange for credits – a process called net metering. There are potential drawbacks to solar power. Upfront installation and equipment costs can be steep. The average price of a 5 kW solar installation in Broomfield is about $16,000, and payback is just under 10 years, according to EnergySage, a startup company that offers solar comparison shopping data based on actual quotes. In addition, solar power depends on sunny days, meaning clouds and weather can create inconsistency. To encourage the use of renewable energy, the federal government and local municipalities offer tax credits and other incentives for solar installations. The most substantial incentive is the Federal Residential Renewable Energy Tax Credit, which provides a credit of 30 percent of the cost of a qualified system. However, that incentive is scheduled to be discontinued at the end of 2019.

Municipal Solar Efforts The City and County of Broomfield has deployed solar on several of its buildings in an effort to use renewable energy and reduce long-term energy costs. The city buys the electricity generated from the solar providers that installed the panels and has agreements that guarantee no future cost increases over the term of the agreement. Installations are on the Police and Combined Courts Facility, the Norman Smith Service Center, the Paul Derda Recreation Center, the Mamie Doud Eisenhower Library, the City & County Building, the Great Western Reservoir Reuse Water Treatment Plant, the Wastewater Treatment Plant, the Police Training and Detention Center, and the Willow Run Sewer Lift Station.

Homeowner Considerations If you are considering a solar installation, there are several factors you should consider and questions you should ask before proceeding. •

Is your roof up to par? It is important to evaluate how much roof space you have available for panels and which direction your roof faces. In addition, solar panels can last several decades, so it is important that your roof is in good condition and doesn’t need to be replaced in the near future.

How will you pay for the system? Homeowners have several options to finance the upfront cost of solar installation, including purchasing the system outright or obtaining a loan. Systems also can be leased from a third-party provider or through a power purchase agreement. Be careful to understand how using a third-party arrangement affects any ongoing maintenance costs or incentives that may be available. In addition, if you sell your home before a solar lease or third-party contract is up, your buyer may have to be approved to assume your contract.

How long do you plan to live in your home? With a significant upfront cost to installing solar systems, it is important to consider how long it will take to break even on your investment and whether you intend to be in your home long enough to reap

that benefit. “This is a long-term investment, so don’t expect to get your whole cash back in the first year,” said Matthias Alleckna, an energy analyst at EnergyRates.ca, an energy price comparison website. “Solar-powered systems can run up to 30 years while their average money-back time is around six or eight years. They are expensive for their initial costs but highly money-saving in the long term.” •

Who will install your system? SEIA estimates there are more than 150 solar installers in Colorado. Look for an installer that has professional solar installation certifications, solar-specific business licenses, and insurance. Make sure the installer has experience with solar installations, check online ratings, and ask for referrals.

What happens after your system is installed? Make sure you review the system warranty and understand what your responsibilities are for maintaining the system and repairing damage. Check with your insurance provider to ensure any damage caused by hail or other factors is covered by your homeowner’s insurance policy.

HOW TO

Save Money On Communications By Elizabeth Buckingham

Have you committed to revamping your finances and saving more money this year? Reviewing your communication accounts – cellular, Internet, and television – can be a great place to start. Many people are overpaying for these everyday services, and an hour or two of research and a few phone calls might well result in hundreds in savings every month.

22

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JANUARY 2019

Wireless Phones and Service First, focus on the device you use most: your smartphone. Whether you’re on your own account or a family plan, it’s likely that you’re paying for services you don’t need. Analyze your usage over the past three months, accounting for data, texts, and talk; in most cases, you’ll find out that you’re not using everything you’re paying for. If you’re happy with your current carrier, investigate their other options and consider switching to a lower-priced plan. If you’re not happy with your provider (and surveys indicate that most of us aren’t), shop around. You’re not obligated to stick with the major carriers; there are now Internet-based cell providers, like Mint, Ting, Republic, and many others, who use Wi-Fi for most of their connections. When no Wi-Fi is available, these carriers use major provider towers. It’s worth checking the coverage available in your area; you might be able to pay as little as $30 or $40 a month for cell service if you’re not streaming a lot of video. Remember the days when cell phones were frequently offered for free in exchange for a new contract? Those days are long past, now that we consider the latest, hottest phone to be a musthave accessory. If your phone still works, there is no need to upgrade it every six months; cellular providers reap huge profits convincing you that your phone should be upgraded. Most phones can now be easily unlocked and used on different carriers in the U.S. and around the world, so you’re no longer required to stay with one provider. Check Craigslist or other secondhand marketplaces for inexpensive used phones; these can often be had for a great price because someone else has chosen to upgrade. And don’t forget to recycle your old phones; billions of devices are carelessly thrown away each year, contaminating land and water with heavy metals.

Cable Television, Landline, and Internet Service

Economical Entertainment When it comes to saving the most money possible, nothing out there beats your local library. From DVDs to music to current magazines to audiobooks to actual paper books (remember those?), your library has enough entertainment to keep you occupied for decades. Plus, they offer great children’s programming too, to keep the young ones away from screens! It’s been said for years that the Internet would spell the death of the local library, but instead libraries find themselves busier than ever. If you haven’t been to the library in a while, check it out. You’ll be surprised by how much you find there!

If you currently have cable TV service, ask yourself honestly how often you watch every single one of those seven thousand channels. Is that worth a hundred bucks or more every month? It might be time to ditch the cable TV if you watch mostly Netflix and Hulu; if you decide that you absolutely must have cable, then negotiate with your provider for lower rates. Companies like DirecTV and Comcast are struggling in the wake of on-demand services, and they’re often willing to offer existing customers sweet deals just to stick around. And if you still have a landline, and for some reason feel the need to keep it, definitely consider bundling your services – this typically results in a discount, too. Don’t forget to examine your Internet costs too. No matter what service and what provider you’re using, never be afraid to politely ask for a lower rate, and if you’ve been a customer for some time, always let them know that you’re looking at other options and ask to speak to the customer retention department. Being friendly and polite to people who don’t usually receive this sort of treatment can work wonders. While Netflix and Hulu are definitely the biggest players in the on-demand streaming market, a number of smaller companies are appearing, too. Choosing which service is best suited for you depends on what you watch – are you interested in Netflix’s original programming, like The Crown or BoJack Horseman? Or are you after The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel or Game of Thrones? Most of these services offer a free trial, so if you’re not using them yet it may well be worth your time to investigate their options thoroughly before signing up. GOING PLACES: Citizen-Focused Broomfield Traffic

The phone is ringing. I hurriedly trip over the dog that is vomiting up the cotton balls he snatched from the bathroom vanity, as toothpaste froths from my mouth when I reach the phone. As if that’s not enough, morning traffic is stacked from Midway Blvd. all the way north to Eagle Way as I slowly inch my way down Main St. This is not a normal morning. Traffic doesn’t typically snarl like this in Broomfield.

H

owever, it occurs to me: When it comes to transportation and ease of travel, residents may rightly hold their elected officials accountable. Here in Broomfield, as it is with neighboring municipalities, transportation and its related issues are front and center year after year. Strides are made. Challenges are met. And prompt attention is delivered following concerns voiced by citizens, elected officials, developers, and other important stakeholders. “Broomfield has done an excellent job working regionally,” said Mayor Randy Ahrens. “A stellar example is how successful the Bus Rapid Transit and HOV (high-occupancy vehicles) improvements along the US 36 corridor have become.” It’s critical that local governments lobby to state legislatures and federal decision-makers on behalf of their citizens for transportation projects, presenting cost estimates and often, available local matching funds. “It was extremely disappointing for me that Proposition 110 failed,” Mayor Ahrens added. “Our Highway 7 Coalition had 80% of the funding we needed to complete expansion and improvements along State Hwy 7 – including a new overpass at State Hwy 7 and I-25.” But that 2018 ballot proposal failed. Mayor Ahrens is one of the founding members of the Highway 7 Coalition, created some five years ago. The group is made up of leaders from Lafayette, Erie, Broomfield, Thornton, and Brighton. Broomfield continues to work on a number of transportation improvements. One of the 2018 city council priorities includes the Dillon Road upgrade. This project came about as a result of traffic studies and traffic safety concerns. While Dillon Road design work and right-of-way acquisition continues, construction along the road is slated to begin early this year. Mayor Ahrens said, “I’m glad our council was willing to bond $40 million to start the 144th/Dillon Road widening and improvements and I’m looking forward to benefiting from the results here in the next few years.” Another ongoing process prioritizing safety and ease of travel within Broomfield is the Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program designed to identify opportunities to relieve congestion and to establish efficient

travel times along key routes throughout the city. The ease of travel in our community by car, bicycle, and walking is a high priority to planners and receives infrequent complaints. In fact, benchmark comparisons against other communities along the Front Range and in the nation, show Broomfield as exceptional. Broomfield has recently completed a Bicycle and Pedestrian Assessment and is in the process of designating corridors for comprehensive bike and pedestrian improvements. Broomfield City Councilwoman Elizabeth Law-Evans, an avid cyclist, is enthused about the ongoing progress the city continues to make. “It’s a lot of fun, mainly,” she replied when asked about the appeal of biking around town. “The majority of my trips are within two miles. Short trips like that use more fuel, so if I can cut down on short trips by even 10%, then I’m moving in a really good direction,” she said. “If you’ll pardon the pun.” Cost savings and exercise are just a couple of the advantages of doing errands on a bicycle. Councilwoman Law-Evans also makes use of Broomfield’s new interactive online trail map. (Visit www.broomfield.org for information.) For someone just beginning to get around town on a bike, that is a great resource, she explained. Beyond bikes, other ride sharing options are plentiful in and around the city, including RTD bus service (visit www.rtd-denver.com for more information), Lyft (www.lyft.com/rider/ cities/denver-co), and Uber (www.uber.com/ cities/denver). If you have an event in Denver, commuters may opt to leave their car at home, take an Uber or Lyft to the RTD Park-n-Ride gate at Arista and hop a bus to downtown, saving money, relaxing, and enjoying a designated driver, all while being a friend to the environment. Entertainment

ON THE CHEAP: Fun Ideas That Won’t Break the Bank By Sara Baker, MS, CSCS

Broomfield and the surrounding areas have plenty of activities for great entertainment, however, the cost of these activities can definitely add up. By taking a little extra time to look for free or low cost options or discounts online before heading out to your activity you can save quite a bit of money.

T

he easiest way to check for discounts for certain activities is to visit the website of the place you would like to go. Some sites offer specials on their website or will send a discount code or coupon for signing up for their newsletter. Following the company on social media can also provide access to information about deals. Another simple way to check for savings is the website Retail Me Not. Though known mostly for retail coupons, Retail Me Not does offer mobile coupons and codes, cash back offers, and discount gift cards for various activities such as movie passes, theme parks, and more. The site will either give you a coupon code to use or take you to a specific deal on the brand’s website. If you plan on going to a place more than a few times, one of the best ways to save money – especially for families – is to buy an annual membership. In only about three visits, a membership investment to places like the Denver Zoo, WOW Museum in Lafayette or the Children’s Museum, will quickly pay off. Members often also get a certain number of guest passes, discounts on food, and other special privileges. Laura Daily, publisher of Mile High On The Cheap, a community resource website for deals, discounts, and free events in the Denver/Boulder area said, “There are so many free and low-cost events in the area, it's mind boggling. Our motto is "never pay full price.” She also offered the tip that many entertainment venues sell surplus tickets through companies such as Goldstar. For a small service fee, you can get up to 50 percent off. “Another free option is to attend a movie sneak preview. Local promoters offer passes to all the new movies. Sometimes you

download the pass, or you enter to win a pass. In either case, you do need to get to the cinema early because these previews are overbooked. But if you are one of the early-birds you can see a film for free,” she said. Mile High On The Cheap also has found that local breweries have become hot spots for free entertainment including concerts, one-man shows, trivia nights, and more. The site publishes a daily newsletter, which is free to subscribe to and compiles many free and low-cost activities onto several calendars including this one:https://milehighonthecheap.com/free-cheap-things-denver-weekend/ If you are looking for some local free or low cost entertainment, look no further than the Broomfield Recreation department for many low cost options. Angela Delier, Recreation Supervisor described local outdoor activities, “McKay Park is a great free recreational opportunity that allows everyone an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors in a neighborhood park area. Broomfield skate park is free and open year round weather permitting. March through October Broomfield operates an outdoor automated batting cage facility for many levels and abilities.” Broomfield Recreation offers a wide variety of low cost entertainment options for kids of all ages. Preteen Palooza is an inexpensive program offered to middle schoolers in Broomfield. The program allows parents to leave their children under supervised care for a couple hours each day, during school breaks. Fees are $5 for residents and $8 for nonresidents. Beverly Burbach, Child Sitting Director said, “Parents Night Out is an another inexpensive program that allows parents to leave their children supervised for three hours on a Saturday evening, every other month. Fees are $30 per family for residents and $35 per family for nonresidents.”

We are fortunate to have so many options for fun entertainment in our community. Take a few extra minutes to research online what is available and any discounts that might be offered to keep your family entertained without breaking the bank.

- WHY -

(and What You Can Do About It) By Kristen Beckman

On January 1, about half of all Americans will embark on a familiar journey. Fresh from a month of gatherings with friends and family over decadent meals, spending (and often overspending) on gifts, and other excesses sanctioned by the specialness of the holiday season, many Americans will look to the upcoming new year as an opportunity to make changes in their lives. But studies show that most of these New Year’s resolutions will fail by the time February 1 rolls around, not because of a lack of earnestness or effort, but because lasting habit change is hard. Why do New Year’s Resolutions largely fail? Experts have studied this phenomenon and offer a variety of reasons why our hopeful goals for ourselves tend not to survive until Spring. People often set too many resolutions, don’t have the necessary support system in place to achieve success, or have false expectations about how hard they will have to work to achieve their goals. Dr. Jessica Walker, a family medicine physician at UCHealth Family Medicine Clinic in Longmont, said the two most common resolutions her patients discuss are weight loss and smoking cessation. She offered a few reasons why resolutions tend to fail and how you can approach goal-setting differently to maximize your likelihood of success.

30

THE BROOMFIELDER™ JANUARY 2019

Mistake #1: Setting Unattainable Goals

When the clock strikes midnight on December 31, millions of Americans will earnestly expect that they will wake up the next morning with the strength and motivation to make big changes. Those wanting to lose weight might envision themselves eating lean, healthy food at every meal and hitting the gym every single day. When they inevitably fail to keep those goals, they often feel like they have failed and give up completely. “January 1st seems to be rather intimidating to many patients who want to make a change,” said Dr. Walker. She encourages patients to set more focused goals over smaller chunks of time, such as drinking more water in January, trying to sleep eight hours a night in February, cutting out processed sugars in March. “Over time, these changes make you feel better, so you are more inclined to adopt them as part of your lifestyle instead of something that is not sustainable like most diets are,” she said.

Mistake #2: Focusing on Quantity Rather than Quality

It’s only natural when setting goals to try to quantify what it means to be successful, whether it is saving a certain amount of money or losing a certain number of pounds by a certain date. But setting targets like this can create an all-or-nothing mindset that leads people to abandon their resolutions. Focusing instead on changing behaviors can lead to success. “I always try to steer patients away from the ‘I want to lose 20 pounds by Spring Break’ mindset,” said Dr. Walker. “Resolutions like that are based solely on weight loss and often unattainable when they think about how much weight they would have to lose each month to meet that goal.” Dr. Walker said exercise is another area where people tend to focus on quantity rather than quality, expecting themselves to work out daily at a gym, for example. But 10-minute walks three times a day can add up to just as much benefit as a daily gym workout. “Those short spurts of exercise do add up when it comes to our health,” Dr. Walker said. “It is confidence-boosting for most patients to know that their exercise bank is cumulative.”

Mistake #3: Not Rewarding Yourself for Success

Often people focus on negatives, beating themselves up for small failures while ignoring small successes. When making habit changes, it is important not only to see the positive progress you have made but also to reward it. “Behavioral research shows us that humans like rewards, not punishment,” said Dr. Walker, who noted smoking cessation campaigns that used to depict the negative health effects of smoking were not very effective. Anecdotal stories from many of her patients, however, suggest that those who successfully quit smoking were motivated by being able to save money they used to spend on cigarettes and instead buy something for themselves as a reward and motivation to keep going. “I try to encourage patients to not beat themselves up about small slip ups or past failures,” said Dr. Walker. “Those who believe in themselves, have a plan for how they aim to accomplish their goal and reward their small successes along the way are often the most successful at changing their behavior long term.”

Announci

For 18 years, The Broomfielder™ staff has been honored to bring monthly community stories and information to your home each month. We thank you for helping us become an established and trusted local resource, and for browsing our pages and leaving a copy on the coffee table for another look later. This month we are excited to announce the launch of our new online presence, TheBroomfielder.com.

T

he new website will be a complement to the print edition, and will include some of the articles and content seen in print, but also super-timely and hyper-local ‘online-only’ content continuously updated throughout the month. In addition, TheBroomfielder.com will be an archive for past print editions in digital form. The print edition of the magazine will continue to be delivered to your home each month and no changes are planned to its format or scope. “The Broomfielder™ magazine is a community gathering place for all that is good about Broomfield,” said Publisher and Owner Mike Garrison. “Each month, we provide a forward-looking composite of things to do, places to go, events to attend, stories about inspirational residents, local places to shop and eat, and ways to support the community as whole. But all too often we find there is more information to share than our space in the magazine allows, or we find a need to have more frequent contact with our readers, or we hear residents of surrounding communities wishing they could have easier access to The Broomfielder™. TheBroomfielder.com will allow us to

significantly expand our reach and our community impact.” Editor Tina Eichner agreed, “Many months there is just so much more happening in the community that we want to tell our readers. Now we can highlight more events, groups, people, and local activities through the website. Content will be categorized by topic and easy to find.” In addition to online-only content, the new site will feature easy access to the print edition of the magazine, a local event calendar, and a local business directory that will be built out and updated by business owners and become an increasingly valuable resource as time goes on. The site also has integrated social media buttons for Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest making it easy for readers to share content with one another, as well as easy one-click access to advertiser websites. Mike added, “The website also gives us an opportunity to provide greater visibility to our advertisers, and with their partnership be an online local guide to goods and services and another connection point to their customers in the community.”

Around the holidays, we tend to reaffirm the things we know we need to get done by making resolutions for the new year. Resolution: The act of being determined upon a course of action. Procrastination: To put off until another day or time. These two words have very different meanings, but around New Year’s Eve they always seem so similar. We resolve to do the things we should do and that would really make a difference, like estate planning. Then, we spend the new year doing the less important things that occupied our time last year. Procrastinating in the area of estate planning may result in a complete mess upon your death, causing your children and other family members to fight, potentially destroying relationships. Putting off estate planning may cause your family to unnecessarily spend large amounts of your hard-earned wealth for your care if you should become disabled later in life. It may also result in assets being distributed to the wrong beneficiary and possibly a large portion of your estate being used up on major costs after death that could have been avoided. A properly designed and implemented estate plan will make life a whole lot easier - both emotionally and financially - for your spouse, children, and family. So instead of Resolution or Procrastination, why not commit to Completion? If you would like to learn more about estate planning, attend one of our complimentary workshops.
