e all have those people who make a mark on our lives that we will never forget. I first met Rosann Doran in the late 1980s when I started my assignment as the Broomfield High School writer for The Broomfield Enterprise. Rosann was the editor. I was inspired by her and I looked up to her. She seemed to run the newspaper nearly singlehandedly and with great confidence and commitment. In November, Rosann passed. In 1988 I was a senior in high school and there were some crazy things going on with the then high school administration and the high school newspaper of which I was the editor. It culminated one night in a blatant censorship of benign content. That evening, the student staff took a stand and ran white space in place of the censored content. The fallout upon publication the next day was swift and intense for an idealistic and naïve high school journalist, including more than one visit to the principal’s office and calls to the district. The details of that day are actually not critical to this story. This is. I went to the office of The Broomfield Enterprise to process what had happened and share the story with Rosann. She promptly sat me down at a typewriter and said, write! She wanted me to capture what had happened that day – possibly for an article in her paper. I was filled with fear! The action I had taken was bold but this felt unspeakable. Such an expansion of my audience to this issue made me nervous. She said, I had already taken a stand and the facts were clear. She said, write. It was a pivotal moment for a young writer. The facts were clear. I wrote. Rosann taught me to be bold in my writing and have confidence. Rosann and I stayed in touch over the years. When she worked at the City, I worked on some special writing projects for her. Later, when I took over as editor of The Broomfielder, we switched roles. Through her various volunteer activities around town, Rosann wrote several articles for me. She would never take a byline. That was Rosann. We would meet and have lunch a few times a year and talk about Broomfield, the old days, Broomfield’s growth, and of course the people – past and present – who are the fabric of our town. A little more than a year ago, over one of those lunches we started a list. A list of people who I should make sure and speak to, and interview, to capture their stories of Broomfield while I still could. I never thought that Rosann’s name should be on that list too. I took for granted that those lunches and my access to her insights into our community would continue. We have all lost an important voice – of our past and for our future. Thank you, Rosann, for mentoring a young girl. Thank you for making an indelible mark on our town through your many years of service as the editor of The Enterprise, as the city’s Public Information Officer, and through your dedication to Broomfield organizations too numerous to count. I will miss you.

COLORADO GIVES DAY Expands Power of Giving Across the State and Here in Our City

More than 40% of individual donations are made in the last few weeks of the year, called the Giving Season, and during those weeks the average person will be asked to donate almost 100 times. Indeed, Americans do get caught up by the spirit of the season AND all of those requests for donations and extend a lot of help to their fellow man. According to Giving USA Foundation, a public service initiative of The Giving Institute, in 2017 national giving exceeded $400 billion in a single year for the first time, increasing 5.2 percent over 2016.

Colorado, the day of giving set aside for the holiday season is Colorado Gives Day. Each year, Coloradoans come together to maximize the impact of non-profits on this collective day of charity. This year, Community First Foundation and 1STBank present Colorado Gives Day on Tuesday, December 4. The annual statewide movement celebrates and increases philanthropy in Colorado through online giving. A $1 Million Incentive Fund created by the partners is one of the largest giving-day incentive funds in the country, with every nonprofit receiving a donation on Colorado Gives Day also receiving a portion of the fund, and therefore increasing the value of every dollar donated. Colorado Gives Day has grown to be the state’s largest one-day online giving event, raising more than $182 million since it began in 2010. our City Council has been diligently working to be able to provide our citizens with many meaningful and joyous gifts this past year. Kids always being a focus and priority, we provided funding for a world class Extreme Bike Park which has brought smiles to hundreds of youth and others young at heart. I still recall when Bruce Borgmann, Buck Newton, and my brother, Rick Ahrens, used to ride bikes on the Kosizek hills near Main and Midway. Furthermore, City Council continues to create a path for the Butterfly Pavilion and Adams 12 STEAM School being located at our exciting new McWhinney Baseline project. This will positively benefit kids for generations to come. Thunder Vista School was opened this year and provides much needed learning facilities in the Anthem neighborhood. We were also able to bestow gifts for Jefferson Academy to build a new auditorium. Council unwrapped a $40 million plan for new recreational facilities, a gift for anyone that enjoys swimming, exercise, wood working, various events, etc. It’s really an amazing plan to bring glad tidings for everyone. Another present was to create more space for our valued Veterans Museum to showcase military memorabilia and stories. The displays and stories help us understand the ways our veterans give us the opportunity to experience the “Joy of Life.” It is important that we remember the six original founders: Bob Davenport, Bob Seeber, Vic Boccard, Bob Humphrey, Paul Murphy and Broomfield’s 1st Judge, John Atkinson, and the service they provided our community. Council also paved the way for upgrading our roads and bonded $40 million to provide better travel times along 144th Avenue, certainly a gift that will be enjoyed by many. And perhaps the Council gave themselves a stocking stuffer by hiring a new city attorney, Shaun T. Sullivan. Broomfield also saw some new events this year, like the inaugural Broomfield Trails Marathon to benefit Carina Martin’s Precious Child organization. Much cheer should be extended to the Broomfield Evening Rotary’s John O’Hayre, John Abboud, and Cory Amend who led with elflike heroics to pull off this event. And to please our holiday palates, new restaurants are on the way; Raising Cane & Masa’s showcase the list. Initial plans were presented for the much anticipated new retail component of the Civic Center. Everyone hopes the plans include attainable housing and cultural aspects, including an expansion of the pond and library facilities. This will become a valued gathering place for all in the future. What presents are in store for next year? You’ll have to wait to open the gifts, but I’m certain our Council and staff will continue to bring new presents all year long.

On December 7, the George DiCiero City and County Building and the surrounding park will be transformed into a winter wonderland, with festive lights adorning trees, holiday carols and music filling the air, and Santa himself making a special visit from the North Pole. Behind the scenes working to make this magical evening come to life each year are several of Broomfield’s City and County departments, dozens of staff who spend hours planning, and local citizens and groups who bring sweet treats and their musical talents to make the evening special.

lanning for the event begins each year as soon as crews finish taking down the lights and decorations from the previous holiday season. Actual decorating begins in October with pre-checks, and installations begin the first week of November so that all displays are ready by Thanksgiving. It takes approximately 2,000 man-hours to install and take down more than 1,950 strands of lights across all of the city’s holiday displays, and crews use three aerial lifts and one scissor lift to accomplish their tasks. In addition to the City and County Building and park display, other displays can be found at the Paul Derda Recreation Center, The Brunner Farmhouse, and Midway Park. The mayor’s tree is a 25-foot Blue Spruce decorated with 85 strings of lights and more than 40 extra-large ornaments. While the weather is still warm in August, Kay Gazaway, Community Events Coordinator for the City and County of Broomfield, begins to work with local schools, churches, and other groups to plan music for the Mayor’s Tree Lighting Ceremony. Gazaway also reaches out to Santa during the summer when he’s on vacation to secure time in his schedule for him to visit Broomfield in December. Gazaway said many city and county teams make the event happen, including the Recreation team, which coordinates the event; the Parks Department, which puts up lights and runs hayrides; the Street Services department, which manages traffic, parking, and street closures; the Fire Department, which helps transport Santa; the Police Department, which ensures everyone stays safe; the City Manager; and the Mayor and the City Council, which will sing at the event. In the weeks leading up to the event, as local musicians rehearse and the final touches are put on the light displays, Christy Reed, owner of The Book Tree Bakery, starts accumulating the ingredients she needs to bake sugar cookies for attendees. Reed said she’ll need approximately 15 pounds of butter, 13 pounds of sugar, 2.5 dozen eggs, 15.5 pounds of flour, a cup of pure vanilla extract and 4-5 pounds of sparkling sugar to make one large cookie each for 550 people. Reed hand rolls each cookie and bakes them fresh the morning of the event. The day of the event, the North Metro Fire Department will be dispatched to pick up Santa and deliver him to Broomfield. At 6:00 p.m., between 500 and 700 people will gather with the mayor, who will count down to zero and light the tree with a magic button, said Gazaway. Groups scheduled to play music or sing at the event include a Suzuki violin group, the Broomfield Civic Chorus, the Mountain View Elementary Sign Language Choir, and a choir from Coyote Ridge Elementary. Children will be able to meet with Santa to tell him their wishes and get a candy cane. Parents can take pictures of their child with Santa, and Santa will stay until everyone who wants to see him has a chance. In addition, two wagons will provide hayrides through the property to see the lighted trees while riders sing carols or listen to music. Reed will be on hand with free cookies as well as other sweet treats that attendees can purchase, including Christmas tree brownies, cut-out cookies, and winter macaroons. “This event helps our community begin the Holiday festivities,” said Mayor Randy Ahrens, who offered an opportunity for children to help. “Every year, I select a couple eager children to help with the tree lighting, so come listen to our council perform a few carols, and perhaps you’ll get the opportunity to participate in bringing in the season.”

Perfect for the holidays! This deliciously rich cheesecake topped with creamy caramel, crunchy pecans, and a wafer crust will be the rave of the party.

Ingredients CRUST:

• 46 crushed wafers • 1/4 cup sugar • 1/4 cup butter, melted • 16-18 whole vanilla wafers for side of form

FILLING: • 3 8oz. packages cream cheese, softened • 1 cup sugar • 1/2 cup sour cream • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 3 large eggs, lightly whisked

TOPPING: • 26 caramels • 2 tablespoons milk • 1/2 cup chopped pecans, toasted (optional)

Directions Preheat oven to 325°.

CRUST: Mix crushed wafers and sugar then stir in melted butter. Press wafer mix onto bottom of a greased 9-in. springform pan. Arrange whole vanilla wafers around sides of pan.

FILLING: In a large bowl, beat cream cheese and sugar until smooth. Next beat in sour cream and vanilla. Add lightly whisked eggs; beat on low speed just until blended. Pour over crust. Place pan on a baking sheet. Bake until center is nearly set, 55-60 minutes. Cool on a wire rack 1 hour. Refrigerate overnight, covering when completely cooled.

TOPPING: In a microwave, melt caramels with milk; stir until smooth. Drizzle over cheesecake; sprinkle with pecans. NOTE: To freeze cheesecake: Wrap individual portions of cheesecake in plastic wrap and place in a resealable plastic freezer bag. Seal bag and freeze. To use, thaw in the refrigerator.

You don’t need to spend a lot of money here; thrift stores are stuffed with interesting tins, boxes, and baskets, and you can pick up a selection for just a few dollars. Consider alternative containers, too, like large Mason jars or vases. Grab some ribbon, tissue paper, and clear plastic floral wrap at the dollar store, and you’re on your way. Does your sister love good coffee? Choose a selection of beans from a local roaster like Ozo, Allegro, or Daz Bog. Add a few swizzle sticks or candy canes and homemade or purchased biscotti, or a box of Helliemae’s espresso caramels. A cheerful mug finishes the gift perfectly. Your cousin loves entertaining, so a tin of easy shelf-stable nibbles will be much appreciated, especially during the holidays. Start with a bottle of wine, then add roasted nuts, local salumi from Elevation Meats, cheese straws, oil-cured olives, and good crackers. You might even earn an invitation to cocktail hour! Is your brother-in-law obsessed with microbrews? For your young niece who adores baking, make a quick trip to Savory Spice Shop or Penzey’s and put together a baking basket. High-quality cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and almond extracts, sanding sugar, sprinkles, and maybe a fun cookie cutter or two could yield treats for you to enjoy, too! A winter comfort basket for your best friend might include a selection of teas from Teatulia or Celestial Seasonings, plus local honey from Bee Squared, and sweet treats from Cultura or Piece, Love & Chocolate. Lots of local potters’ guilds have holiday sales, so add a beautiful handmade mug to the basket, and she’ll think of you every time she takes a tea break. Colorado is best known for its world famous skiing. However, if you cannot fathom the I-70 traffic or the cost puts this sport out of reach, there is plenty of winter family fun to be had right here in Broomfield and the surrounding areas.

Sledding Sledding is a great activity for kids of all ages. There are plenty of great sledding spots in and around Broomfield. Broomfield Commons Park at 13221 Sheridan has a great hill located near the vending area of the athletic fields. The hill is not very long but allows for plenty of sledders and is a great place for beginners or younger sledders. The Commons also has ample parking. The soccer fields next to Legacy High School provide a fairly short and steep hill that is quite wide to allow for many sledders. There are numerous hills and amazing views at the City’s Recreation Park in Westminster located at 104th and Sheridan. In Lafayette, Autumn Ash Park, off North 111th Street at Beacon Hill and Lucerne Drive also has a nice hill for family sledding with young children. Also in Lafayette, Waneka Lake Park at 1600 Caria Drive offers great sledding on the northeast side of the lake.

Snowshoeing

Ice Skating Another great winter activity the entire family can enjoy is ice skating. With all the Colorado sunshine, outdoor ice skating is especially fun. Broomfield residents are very fortunate to have a close outdoor ice skating rink at the Steinbaugh Pavilion located in Louisville’s historic downtown area. The 6,500 square feet rink has traditional holiday music, concessions, and features free horse drawn carriage rides. Skate rentals are included in the price of admission. The outdoor rink is open from November through February, as well as on holidays, and even has extended hours during winter break. If you want to take a large group, group rates and private parties are also available. If you would still like to skate but the weather is not cooperating, The Ice Centre at the Promenade in Westminster has a great indoor rink. The Sports Stable, a new sports complex in Louisville also has a large indoor ice rink and offers open skating hours.

The Nordic Center If you are not ready to commit to the price or time commitment of downhill skiing, check out the Nordic Center at Eldora Mountain for a variety of winter activities. Eldora is roughly 35 miles from Broomfield in Boulder County. Eldora’s Nordic Center has an extensive network of trails. The trails travel through beautiful forests and alpine meadows with breathtaking views. The trails, 40 kilometers in all, are designated for classic cross-country skiing, skate skiing or snowshoeing. The Nordic Center offers rentals, lessons, and clinics.

Snowshoeing does not require special skills and is a great activity for families to enjoy together, not to mention, it is excellent exercise. Snowshoeing is essentially walking in the snow and there is a minimal learning curve. If you want to try it, you can rent snow shoes at Nordic centers, often found at mountain resorts or retailers like REI. Renting is great way to try the variety of brands and types of snowshoes before purchasing. There are plenty of trails in the mountains but if you want to stay closer to home, Mud Lake in Boulder County has a great beginner trail. Lost Lake Trail in Nederland, about 35 miles outside of Broomfield, offers a 4-mile round trip trail with amazing views. The trail also showcases a few old mines and cabins on the mountainside to the south of Lost Lake. Brainard Lake, just about an hour from Broomfield, is another excellent snowshoeing spot with numerous trails.

Colorado has no shortage of sunshine or winter sport activities. Even if you feel like staying close to home, there are plenty of activities that the entire family can enjoy. Get out there and play this winter!

Bal Swan Children's Center Therapy Pool Gets Magical Makeover The warm water therapy pool at Bal Swan Children’s Center has received a magical makeover thanks to private anonymous donors, artists with Rise Above Colorado, and the project coordination of a longtime board member. Bal Swan Children’s Center in Broomfield focuses on meeting the developmental needs of children of all abilities in an inclusive environment and recognizes each child’s differences by customizing preschool services to that child’s needs. Children and families are supported by therapy services, parenting classes, and highly trained staff. Warmwater therapy is just one of the many therapies provided at Bal Swan, in a pool located right on site. Bal Swan’s occupational therapist provides therapy sessions in the warm-water pool, which is a very effective and unique way to provide occupational therapy. And all students at Bal Swan are able to enjoy the pool as part of their regular curriculum. Now these students will enjoy a beautiful underwater panorama that fills the room. Chad Bolsinger is the artist behind the inspirational artwork that now fills Bal Swan’s swimming pool room. He describes himself as a self-taught artist who has found purpose in his craft. Chad is part of the Rise Above organization. “Making art is very spiritual and intuitive,” Chad said, telling how refining his skills and working on

projects like the one at Bal Swan have helped him refine his skills and emerge from a rough place in life. Rise Above Colorado is a drug abuse prevention organization that measurably impacts teen perceptions and attitudes about the risks of substance abuse in order to help youth make empowered, healthy choices. The organization was created by a dedicated and passionate team from the Colorado Meth Project who are committed to helping teens learn about drug abuse so they can make smart choices that lead the healthy life choices. Rise Above Colorado’s efforts build on the success of the Colorado Meth Project’s “Not Even Once” campaign, and include a focus on methamphetamine abuse and a new prescription drug initiative, as well as providing general drug prevention resources in collaboration with The Partnership for Drug-Free Kids, a national nonprofit organization working to help families solve the problem of teen substance abuse. Jonathan Judge, Rise Above’s Director of Youth Engagement said they were thrilled to

partner with Bal Swan on this project. “We are building a sense of community – building connections through community partnerships with like-minded individuals and organizations and through that finding ways to give back.” “We really wanted to refresh the space and bring it up to date. If you’ve ever received an email from a wealthy foreigner who wants to pay you to help him transfer money out of his country, you’ve been the target of a scam. Most people are aware of this scheme and know to ignore it, but fraudsters continually improve and evolve their scams, employing new technologies and different tactics to achieve their goal of stealing from you. The truth is, anyone can fall for a scam. The Better Business Bureau outlined several reasons why scams work, including that they almost always play on our fears, prey on our trust, or promise (false) hope when we are in desperate situations. Most successful scams appeal to our human emotions, which affects our ability to be rational and causes us to do things we might not otherwise do. Seniors are particularly vulnerable to scammers who take advantage of their lack of skill navigating technology as well as their tendency to be polite and trusting. Often seniors are victimized by fraud because they are ashamed that they’ve been scammed and are reluctant to report what has happened or ask for help.

THE SCAMS Scams come in all varieties, from in-person schemes to unsolicited phone calls or emails, all with the goal of extracting your personal information or stealing money from you. Following are some of the more common scams as identified by Stop Colorado Fraud, a unit of the Colorado Attorney General’s office: •

Home repair fraud. An unsolicited contractor knocks at your door offering a great deal on any number of services, often claiming they’ve done work for a neighbor and have extra materials they can give you at a discounted price. Many times, these ‘contractors’ ask for money up front and then disappear without doing the work.

•

Door-to-door sales. Sometimes door-to-door sales, especially fundraising efforts by neighborhood children, are legitimate, which makes it difficult to identify fraudulent schemes. Magazine sales are frequently a fraudulent attempt to obtain personal information or steal money. These schemes often use children or young adults posing as students claiming to be raising money for their education, school or another good cause.

•

Family Emergency Scams. This scam tugs at your heart and plays on your fears about the safety of your family members. Often called the ‘grandparent scam,’ this scenario targets seniors with a claim that their family member has been arrested or kidnapped, or in a recent iteration of the scam, that the family member has been gravely injured in an accident. The caller demands money and often warns the victim not to tell anyone about the demand for money or their family member will suffer.

Be cautious of any unsolicited calls, emails or visitors at your door.

•

Government imposter scams. These scams can be perpetrated via phone call or email and involve someone claiming to be from a government agency, such as the IRS, demanding money with a threat of arrest or legal action if payment is not made. Similar scams claim the victim has won the lottery or a sweepstakes and must pay taxes to receive the winnings, or that their Social Security number will be suspended due to connection to fraud or criminal activity and needs to be reactivated. It is important to remember that government agencies will not call you and ask for personal information, and Social Security numbers never get suspended.

Ask questions and don’t worry about appearing rude or discontinuing a conversation with anybody who asks for personal information or threatens you.

Be wary of high-pressure sales tactics, anyone who demands an immediate decision, or anyone who discourages you from researching your options.

•

Never give out banking information or your Social Security number by email or phone.

•

Regularly monitor bank and credit card activity for suspicious activity.

•

Talk with elderly family members about fraud and ways to protect themselves.

•

If you feel you have been scammed, file a report at Stop Fraud Colorado’s website www.stopfraudcolorado. gov.

•

Forward fraudulent emails to the Federal Trade Commission at spam@uce.gov.

•

Report fraudulent or unwanted phone calls to the Colorado No Call and Federal Do Not Call programs.

•

Tech Support Scams. An individual calls you claiming there is a problem with your computer and will ask you to open various files and perform different tasks to convince you they know what they are talking about. In reality, they are trying to get access to your computer, passwords and other sensitive information, or install malware.

nd now the Community Center and Senior Center reconstruction is in the works, slated to open during the summer of 2020. As if that’s not exciting enough, including the building of the new Civic Center complex, a revamp of the entire area is in the works. Residents, developers, planners and interested community stakeholders gathered most recently on Oct. 27 at the Broomfield Auditorium to hear about ongoing progress regarding the development of the approximate 10.5 acres, now dubbed “Broomfield Town Square.” With the community consistently engaged in the progress of the proposal (generally north of First Ave., South of Midway Blvd. and east of Main St.), the design team from Urban Neighborhoods and City Street Investors describe the process as vibrant and exciting. The park-like setting for both projects will serve as a destination, offering economic vitality, affordable housing, unique shopping, and recreation and dining choices.

At this time, the Civic Center planners are considering various developers to fulfill the vision. Results from numerous community focus sessions and surveys continue to guide the process. Like the new Community Center, the Civic Center aims to reflect a lifestyle reminiscent of the values and expectations of Broomfield residents, visitors, and business owners. The Civic Center plan proposes a substantially enlarged Community Park Pond (making use of reclaimed water) wrapping around the library and Auditorium toward First Avenue, extensive plazas and walking areas, outdoor dining opportunities, entertainment venues and public art, approximately 50,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, a 100-room inn, some 22 row-houses, perhaps as many as 360+ dwelling units and a re-purposing of the Safeway building into 25,000 square feet of retail, co-working, and community space along with a dedicated 10,000 square feet of common area. Visitors to the site of the old Community Center will see the reconstruction project is well underway: The groundbreaking ceremony kicking off the construction of the new facility was last September and The Bay parking lot reconstruction and installation of underground utilities, site work, permitting, and construction has started. The next steps include foundation, pools, and precast structures – that are currently being reviewed and considered for approval via Broomfield’s building department. In the short term, a December 2018 completion is targeted for The Bay parking lot reconstruction. While the old Community Center (built in 1974) was 37,348 square feet, the new one will be some 87,000 square feet, or about the same size as the Paul Derda Recreation Center across town off of Lowell Blvd. And similar to the PDRC and the Community Center, the new building is planned to be a truly multi-generational facility including offerings ranging from preschool programs through programs with an active aging focus – and seemingly everything conceivable in between. Broomfield truly has it all.

Mary had been through so much with Bill’s illness. After almost a year, the illness had taken him from her. Then came the accident. As Mary turned off the highway, she was struck by a young driver. His serious injury seemed to be entirely his own fault, until a lawsuit convinced a jury that Mary’s turn signals were not working properly, shifting legal liability to her. The resulting claim far exceeded her auto insurance limits, and even after the insurance paid $1,000,000 to the injured driver, she was facing a court judgment of more than $800,000. Mary’s lawyer told her their savings and Bill’s life insurance proceeds were going to be wiped out, and a lien would be placed on the family home. Mary was looking at bankruptcy. Then she learned the good news. Bill and Mary sought legal advice when they first learned of his illness. The first lawyer they spoke with said they did not need estate planning. He told them to just “Put everything in joint tenancy.” They weren’t comfortable with that advice and sought advice from a counseling-oriented attorney who took the time to learn more about them, their estate, and their goals. Bill’s primary objective was to protect Mary when he died. Under Bill’s plan, upon his death, his savings, his life insurance and the home did not come directly to Mary in her own name but was put in trust. Mary controlled the trust, but it protected the assets from legal claims, including the accident. While Bill had no idea what claims might arise, his foresight was now going to really pay off for Mary. Some of us channel a little Clark Griswold when it comes to decorating for the holidays—lights strung up everywhere, a fresh Christmas tree with ornaments galore, and enough garland and holiday decor to make Santa’s elves jealous. Whether you go all out or keep your decorating to a minimum, there are certain fire hazards associated with decorations all residents should avoid.

Although Christmas tree fires aren’t common, they are very dangerous and life-threatening. Dry Christmas trees burn extremely quickly and with a tremendous amount of heat. Electrical malfunctions and having a heat source too close to a Christmas tree are the cause of over half of reported Christmas tree fires.

HOW TO PREVENT A CHRISTMAS TREE FIRE • Add water daily to the base of your tree to ensure it doesn’t dry out and become a fire hazard. • Ensure all heat sources, such as heat vents, candles, space heaters and fireplaces, are at least three feet away from your tree. • Replace any string of lights or decorations with worn or broken cords or loose bulb connections. • Make sure your lights are third-party tested for safety, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for using them. • Remember to turn off your Christmas tree lights (and any other powered decorations) before leaving your home or going to bed. Automatic timers are great for this! • When Christmas is over, get rid of your tree before it dries out. Check with your city for information on their tree recycling program after the holidays.

Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs) can prevent 50% of home electrical fires.
