The Season of Giving
By Tammy Whitaker, Editor Lost Creek Sentinel
Over the years, I’ve come to think of November as the month that kicks off the season of giving—whether it’s giving thanks around the holiday table, sharing a plate of cookies with friends, or exchanging gifts with family. So, in keeping with that spirit, Ed and I decided that November would be the perfect time to shine a light on the many nonprofit organizations in our communities that give so much to those who may need a little help from time to time. You’ll see many such stories in this edition— stories of those who give to help others, but who could also use a little support from their friends and neighbors. And if I’ve learned anything while living and working in this community, it’s that you folks take care of each other. That was proven beyond a shadow of a doubt recently at the Southeast Weld County Chamber Military and First Responder Appreciation Luncheon.
The luncheon just happened to coincide with the recent discontinuation of SNAP
benefits, and an email went out asking if those registered could please bring donations for the local Loaves and Fishes Food Bank. Well, ask and you shall receive! The number and amount of donations received was nothing short of amazing and served as yet another reminder that our communities take care of their own.
Kyle Clark of 9News published a commentary on November 3rd that touched my heart, and I’d like to share it here in the hopes it will touch yours as well. Kyle had recently received criticism for a microgiving campaign initiated to raise money for the Weld Food Bank, and he said this: “I want to directly address a concern—a criticism—that I heard from a number of you about the fact that we have started this campaign by raising $85,000 for the Weld Food Bank in deep red Weld County. ‘They voted for this,’ is what a number of you have told me. ‘Teach them a lesson,’ others
have said. I cannot disagree more. For starters, I do not know the personal politics of everybody standing in the food bank line, but I do know that half of Colorado’s 600,000 SNAP recipients are children. They didn’t vote for anything. And what lesson is a child supposed to learn from hunger?” Those words struck a chord with me. I remember going hungry as a child, and I still remember the lesson I learned. I learned that I never, ever want another child to know what it means to be hungry—or thirsty, or cold—because I’ve experienced all of those things myself. That’s why, when I saw that wagon full of food at the luncheon, it touched my heart deeply.
To continue with Kyle’s message:
“Some are gaining power through division… you all prove that there is also power in compassion, and in seeing people instead of just politics.”
Well said, Kyle… well said.

Brighton program leading the fight against sexual assault and domestic violence
The fight against one of the country’s most staggering domestic violence statistics has been a formidable one in recent years. But 12 Intermountain Health nurses in Brighton are facing it head-on.
“We do see a fair amount of strangulation patients, and the cases get worse every time,” said emergency department manager Jessica Weaver, with Intermountain Health Platte Valley Hospital. Research shows that a single strangulation incident increases a victim’s risk of homicide by over 600%.
This urgency led Weaver to launch the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) program at Platte Valley Hospital in 2024, after being approached by the Adams County District Attorney. “There were too many victims and not enough nearby resources,” said Weaver.
The SANE program provides critical, compassionate service for victims through specially trained nursing staff, equipment, and specialized patient care facilities to treat and collect forensic evidence from victims who have experienced sexual violence and domestic abuse.
Nurses are required to complete 64 hours of online specialty training in forensics, as well as additional hands-on education with a forensics team in Colorado Springs.
Platte Valley Hospital is one of the few hospitals in Colorado to offer this program, with at least one of their specialty-trained nurses on site at all times. Last year, they treated 124 patients and are on track to surpass that number before the end of 2025.
“There’s not as many medical care options out east, and so we’re seeing an increase in numbers of those patients that need this specialty type of forensic care,” said Weaver. The customized treatment allows assault survivors to have forensic evidence collected with the same nurse who performs their initial medical exam. The alternative is to be transferred to a second facility for evidence collection and forensic exam. “It’s already very traumatic and difficult to do all of that with one set of providers, much less two or three. This way, they’re in the care of a nurse they’ve become comfortable with,” said Weaver.
The program represents a partnership with area police departments, courts, district attorneys’ offices and special victim’s units. If a patient chooses to report the crime and later press charges, then the forensic evidence collected by Platte Valley’s SANE program will provide an important resource for the police investigation and successful prosecution in the courts.
Colorado ranked No. 10, nationwide in human trafficking reports in 2023. It was a record high number of state cases, with the largest share being reported from Adams County where Platte Valley Hospital is located.
The SANE program currently examines patients aged 15 and up. Younger patients are currently treated at a nearby Children’s Hospital for forensic exams, though Platte Valley Hospital is looking to expand the program to admit pediatric patients in the future.
For a statewide list of domestic and sexual assault resources, visit the Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault website at ccasa.org, or call 303-839-9999. The National Sexual Violence Resource Center also offers 24/7 support through their confidential hotline and online chat service. Visit nsvrc.org or call 1-800-656-4673 for more information.

A Higher Mission: Love On the Move
Mickey and Melanie Hilton both have a passion for working with families and communities and partnering with people who have dedicated their lives to helping take care of others, in the U.S. and across the globe. They have been blessed to travel to countries like Peru, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Belize, Haiti, Uganda, Malawi, Kenya and the Philippines. They have also worked with local families and taken several trips to volunteer at the Dream Center in Los Angeles. In each location, they have served with local missionaries to build houses, deliver supplies, support medical and dental efforts, assist with hurricane relief, offer groceries and prepared food, and share love with new and old friends made along the way. After many years of taking trips with various Colorado-based churches, they realized they had a strong network of global missionaries, all with a desire to have short-term mission teams come to help with projects on an ongoing basis. Out of this intersection of relationships and a willingness to serve, Love on the Move was born in 2022.
The mission of Love on the Move is to share the love of Jesus as we assemble teams for short-term mission trips and local outreach opportunities. We work with organizations that assist with basic needs for people experiencing poverty or homelessness. We provide “feet-on-the street” volunteers to help partners that offer housing, food, educational and spiritual support to communities around the world.
We have three primary goals: ·
• Encourage people to share their faith in Jesus and love for others through service
• Provide people with a desire to serve others the opportunity to do so
• Teach people who want to participate in short-term missions how to fundraise and how to go
Since our first Love on the Move trip in July 2022, we have completed 8 mission trips with 58 people. We will be going to Reynosa, Mexico again this Christmas to build a house for a family in need and to Manaus, Brazil in April 2026 for an Amazon River mission, serving various villages that live along the banks of the river.
As we continued with this ministry, God has allowed us to work increasingly with students and young adults, in many cases, teaching them how to fundraise and go on mission for the first time. The elements of education and equipping were not something we saw at the beginning of this journey, but have been fulfilling and rewarding as we remain open to change and grow.
The interest from middle and high school students has provided us with many opportunities to work locally. We have helped with tree removal and winter firewood log splitting for the elderly, sent out teams to provide yard cleanup labor as part of town beautification days, supported chores and cleanup at a non-profit horse ranch, and engaged in various school community activities. These local projects are a great way to introduce young people to the concept of service and giving back.
There are three ways that our community can help Love on the Move:
• Reach out to us if you have an interest in serving on a short-term mission trip. We know that living full-time in a foreign country isn’t for everyone, but we know a lot of wonderful people who do just that, and they are so thankful for teams from the U.S. who come to help them in their endeavors. We can not only accomplish a lot through the projects we support, but we can encourage missionaries and show love to the local people who help them day in and day out.
• Let us know if you have a community project that needs helpers. We love to serve with joy and bring our network of volunteers into service opportunities.
• We also appreciate financial support from those who are unable to commit to going on a trip.
As a small non-profit, we try to put every dollar we’re given to work, whether that is helping to buy supplies for a specific need, furnish a house we’ve built, or provide a partial scholarship for someone who wants to go on a service trip
Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry
The Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry Board, would like to thank our amazing community for continuing to support us in every way possible! We receive food and monetary donations from local churches, 4-H Clubs, Weld RE3J school organizations, and community members. Each year at the Southeast Weld County Fair, individuals and companies purchase animals, pay for the processing and donate all the meat to the pantry. This is truly a blessing as protein is our biggest expense.
We want you to know that it is truly a blessing to be able to serve our community in this way and we couldn’t do it without all of your support! The Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry was started in early 2008 by Pastor Keith McDonald, who served the Keenesburg and Hudson Methodist Churches. He had a vision that our local churches, schools and organizations would work together through the pantry to help community members in need. Sadly Pastor Keith passed away in July of 2008. Fortunately, due to a dedicated
administrative board we have operated continuously since the pantry’s inception. We serve the Hudson, Keenesburg and Roggen communities. We require identification that you live in one of these zip codes. We offer four holiday distributions a year: Easter, 4th of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas. If you would like to be placed on this list, please call us at 303-732-4319. In-between the holiday distributions we have Grab N’ Go Days when you can shop at the pantry and receive two grocery bags of food. These are from 9:00 am to 11:00 am on the following days for 2026: Feb. 7th, Mar. 7th, May 2nd, Jun. 6th, Aug.1, Sept. 5th, Oct.3, Nov.7th
Rooster Sanctuary at Danzig’s Roost
The Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) organization with a mission to provide safe and forever homes for misplaced, abandoned, and abused farm animals, with a focus on roosters. Founded in 2010 as the first rooster rescue operation of its kind in the nation, the sanctuary is located on a 40-acre property in Bennett, Colorado. Since its inception, the Sanctuary has saved the lives of over 4,000 animals. The Sanctuary currently houses 249 animals, including 92 roosters, who are provided safety, nurturing, enrichment, and medical care for life.
One of our primary concerns since 2014 has been the large-scale rescue of roosters abused as part of the barbaric tradition of cockfighting. Cockfighting is an age-old practice where roosters are bred and trained to fight each other to the death for gambling and entertainment. Authorities usually euthanize the “rescued” roosters due to common misconceptions regarding fighting roosters and the view that they cannot be rehabilitated and are “dangerous.” Through the Sanctuary’s 15 years of experience, it has come to realize that the roosters are traumatized and fearful due to abuse. Our sanctuary has the history, expertise, and resources to rescue, rehabilitate, and provide lifelong care for these roosters. It also works diligently to raise awareness about the plight of these birds through online posts, tabling events,

The Tradition of Christmas Markets: A Celebration of Holiday Cheer
Christmas markets, a beloved holiday tradition in Europe, date back to the late 1200s. Originally, these markets were vital for stocking up on food supplies like meat, cheeses, and grains, helping families prepare for the long, cold winter months. Over time, the markets have changed and evolved.
One of the earliest and most famous examples is the Dresden Striezelmarkt,
which first opened on Christmas Eve in 1434. Often considered the first true Christmas market, the Striezelmarkt has become a cornerstone of German Christmas traditions, inspiring similar celebrations across Europe and beyond.
Though the popularity of these markets has waxed and waned throughout history, they’ve seen a major resurgence since the end of World War II. Today, Christmas markets can be found worldwide—especially in Europe, where countries like Germany, Austria, France, Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic host some of the most iconic events.
Modern markets typically open in mid-November and run until early January, coinciding with the Advent season. These enchanting markets are often illuminated with twinkling lights and festive decorations, offering everything from local delicacies and drinks to handmade crafts such as ornaments, jewelry, and toys. For many, visiting a Christmas market is a mustdo tradition during the holiday season.
The Rise of Holiday Travel: Christmas Markets as Destinations
In recent years, Christmas markets have become a major draw for travelers. River cruises, guided tours, and special holiday itineraries are now offered by many travel companies to give visitors the chance to experience these festive traditions in person.
Some of the most famous markets in the United States include the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, NC, Bethlehem, PA, and large markets in Chicago, IL, Washington D.C., and Arlington, TX. But it’s Colorado’s winter markets that really stand out for their charm and unique appeal.
What Makes Colorado’s Christmas Markets Special?
Colorado, known for its majestic mountain landscapes, is home to a number of popular Christmas markets that capture the magic of the season in unforgettable ways. Here’s what makes them particularly special:
1. Mountain Town Magic: Snowy backdrops and historic architecture lend a picturesque, almost storybook quality to many of Colorado’s markets, making them an ideal setting for holiday festivities.
2. European Flair: Several markets in the state take inspiration from traditional German and Austrian designs, adding an authentic European touch to the experience.
3. Local Craftsmanship: Visitors can expect to find unique, locally made ornaments, jewelry, and gourmet treats that showcase Colorado’s rich artisan culture.
4. Family-Friendly Fun: These markets are not just for adults—many feature festive train rides, visits from Santa, carolers, and a host of activities that will keep the whole family entertained.
If you’re planning a trip to Colorado’s Christmas markets, don’t forget to bundle up! The festive atmosphere, paired with the winter chill, makes for an experience that is as cozy as it is magical.
Whether you’re exploring the markets in Aspen, Denver, George Town, Redstone or Vail, you’ll find plenty of holiday cheer around every corner.

Passing Down the Yum!
My father was very old school which may explain why he never allowed me to wear nail polish (even clear) or make-up or the latest trends in clothing. So it may come as a surprise to you that he wouldn’t sign for me to get my driver’s license, but he would sign for me to get married. Go figure huh? I guess he felt like if I was married, that I would have someone to take care of me! I guess he didn’t recognize my headstrong streak or he would have never put pen to paper on that marriage license! Since he was 54 years old when I was born, he didn’t live long enough to see me grow into the strong independent woman that I became nor did he get to see that both me and my sister inherited his ability to make an incredible feast out of a very few meager ingredients. I count that as one of the greatest gifts passed on from my father and thought I would share one of his good old southern recipes that was always one of my favorites. As a matter of fact, this could just explain why Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are my absolute favorite candy today! Do you have a family recipe passed down from generations gone by? Please share them at editor@lostcreeksentinel as part of your Homegrown Heritage!
SOUTHERN BUCKEYES
• 1 cup creamy peanut butter
• 5 tbsp unsalted butter
• 2 cups powdered sugar
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• 2 cups semisweet chocolate
• 2 tbsp coconut oil (optional)
Instructions
• Cream the peanut butter and butter together with the vanilla extract.
• Add powdered sugar and mix on low until combined. Scrape down bowl and mix again.
• Pinch off tablespoon sized pieces and roll into balls. About 20g if you’re weighing.
• Transfer balls to a baking sheet and chill until firm. At least 20 minutes.
• Add chocolate and coconut oil to a medium bowl and melt on 50% power in the microwave. Stir to combine and set aside to cool to room temperature.
• Use a skewer or toothpick to dip the peanut butter balls into the chocolate. Leave a bit of the peanut butter exposed for that signature buckeye look.
• Chill to allow the chocolate to firm up and enjoy. If you want to remove the holes left from the skewers, run a small knife or spatula over the tops.
Tip for success: make sure you’ve chilled the balls well before dipping into the chocolate and only dip them about three quarters of the way for that signature buckeye look.

Rocky Mountain Heroes Foundation: Bridging Bonds
Through Hunting
In the heart of Colorado, the Rocky Mountain Heroes Foundation (RMHF) stands as a beacon of support for Veterans and their families. Founded in 2021 by passionate advocates Brian “Sol” Soliday, Doc Holiday, and CSM Dale Veneklasen, RMHF aims to foster connections between Veterans and their children through the shared experience of hunting.
The inspiration for RMHF stems from a profound understanding of the challenges Veterans face as they acclimate to civilian life. Many struggle to bond with their children and find a sense of purpose. By offering youth hunts for big game, RMHF helps create lasting memories and strengthen family ties. The organization focuses on providing a supportive environment, ensuring that young hunters have positive experiences; often in private settings where they can thrive.
These experiences invite storytelling. Two particular stories stand out to Sol. He stated he has hosted several female Veteran hunts with their daughters including Heather Braley and her 12-yr old daughter Rain from Henderson, CO. “As a father of three girls and two granddaughters, there’s a special place in my heart for any hunts with females.”
Even though Rain was nervous on her first hunt, they were successful in filling their freezer with their pronghorn haul. The second story was from a hunt last year with US Army Veteran Dakota Weber and his 12-year-old son Wyatt. Also on this hunt was Wyatt’s godfather who served with Dakota, accompanying Wyatt for his first big game hunt. “Having his dad and godfather along with him and making a
great shot on a pronghorn was icing on the cake for this young man.” Such stories reflect the impact of RMHF’s mission, as bonds are forged not just through hunting, but through shared experiences that resonate long after the hunt ends. Community involvement is crucial to RMHF’s success. Volunteers, landowners, and donors come together to provide the resources needed for these adventures. The organization serves Veterans from Colorado and Wyoming with plans for 23 youth and Veteran hunts in 2025. As RMHF continues to grow, it invites support from the community, either through donations or access to land for hunting. By investing in the thrill of the hunt, RMHF is not just promoting the next generation of hunters, it’s nurturing relationships and creating a supportive network for Veterans and their families.

Red Thunder Youth Sports
In a community where kids are too often glued to screens, our program is tackling the problem head-on; literally. Red Thunder Youth Sports, home of the Lil Rebels, is keeping sports alive and accessible for children ages 4 to 14 through its football and wrestling programs. With a mission to keep sports local and affordable. Forging strong bodies, sharp minds, and resilient spirits, Lil Rebels teaches that hard work and determination pay off. This fall, football had over 60 players across four
teams; wrestling now trains more than 75 young athletes. The numbers speak to growing demand, but also to the program’s unique strength: the natural synergy between the two sports. Wrestling builds balance, leverage, and mental toughness, skills that make better football players. Football teaches power, speed, and teamwork that translate right back to the mat. It’s a perfect combo for personal growth. Keeping costs low and the gear current requires community help. Red Thunder seeks
sponsors, coaches, and volunteers. Businesses can explore tiers at redthunderyouthsports.com under the sponsorship tab, from website logos to jersey branding. For smaller needs please check Amazon wish lists. Time is golden too. Parents, high school athletes, and locals are invited to coach or assist. Lil Rebels isn’t just building athletes, it’s raising leaders. One snap, one takedown, one lesson at a time. Visit redthunderyouthsports. com to sponsor, volunteer, or enroll. Local roots. Big heart.
