What are Career Pathways? At Los Medanos College (LMC), career pathways focus on providing a streamlined sequence of coursework that can help lead you into a career you love. Career pathways encompass a wide range of courses and programs, providing our students with the academic skills, knowledge and training necessary to succeed, not only in a future career, but also as a lifelong learner. These pathways are created with workforce partners and are designed to prepare you for employment in current and emerging jobs. Our programs include short-term certificates, two-year degrees, and transfer opportunities. We have courses suitable for those new to college, and also for working professionals seeking career advancement. LMC provides counselors to assist you with academic and career planning, and financial aid and scholarship experts to provide guidance and resources that may help you pay for your education. Courses are offered during the day and evening, at LMC’s Pittsburg Campus and Brentwood Center.

Financial Aid Financial aid is the way many of today’s students pay for college. More and more students are finding the strategies they need in LMC’s Office of Financial Aid. The less money you have, the more financial aid you might receive. We can help you apply for the enrollment fee waiver, work-study program, and other types of state and federal grants. Grants are: · the primary form of financial aid available to students taking classes at LMC · “free” money that students do not have to pay back · are provided to qualified students in the form of a check ,

There are several types of financial aid available at Los Medanos College, including:

California College Promise Grant Program All California residents and AB540 students are encouraged to apply for a state-funded CC Promise Grant (CCPG), which waives or refunds your enrollment fees. Students who complete the FAFSA or Dream Act application will automatically be considered for the CC Promise Grant fee waiver.

Federal Pell Grant Offers up to $5,920 for full-time undergraduate students pursuing a degree or certificate.

California Dream Act The California Dream Act allows AB 540 students to apply and receive several types of state financial aid, including: the Promise Grant, Cal Grant, Chafee Grant, privatelyfunded scholarships administered by California public colleges and universities, and other state aid such as EOPS, CARE and CalWORKs. To apply go to https://dream.csac.ca.gov.

Cal Grants B and C Offers up to $1,672 and $1,054, respectively, for students taking 6 units or more. The application period is between October 1 through March 2. If you plan to attend LMC in the Fall, you have a second deadline of September 2; however, there are a limited number of competitive Cal Grant awards available in the Fall.

Chafee Grant Free funds available to current and former foster youth. https://chafee.csac.ca.gov/

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant Offers between $600 and $1,000 for students enrolled at least half-time (6 units), and is awarded to those who file by March 2 (priority deadline) and have the greatest need.

Federal Work-Study Work on campus in an approved work-study program and receive funding for classes.

Student Loans Loans for financing your education are available.

Full-Time Student Success Grant Offers up to $600 to Cal Grant B recipients who are enrolled as full-time students at LMC.

Community College Completion Grant Must be a Cal Grant B or C recipient and enrolled in at least 12 units (Full-time) and is receiving the Full-time Student Success Grant as well as maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.0

Administration of Justice The Administration of Justice Program prepares students for entry-level positions in criminal justice and for transfer to the California State Universities. There are three components in administration of justice: law enforcement, the court system and corrections. Our instructors, many of whom are current or retired law enforcement officers, bring real-world experience into the classroom as they instruct students in criminal investigation, criminal law, corrections and the American justice system. Appliance SERVICE technology Appliance technicians inspect, troubleshoot and repair major appliances such as refrigerators, ranges, dishwashers, microwave ovens, washers and dryers. The job outlook for both men and women as appliance technicians is very good, especially for those with the right training. There is a serious shortage of skilled appliance service technicians, and LMC offers the only Appliance Service Technology program in California. automotive technology At LMC, students receive hands-on instruction and in-depth state-of-the-art training in the rapidly evolving field of automotive technology, which includes: emission control; engine diagnosis; electrical and body communication; tune-up; brakes; suspension systems; and hybrid. The program maintains up-to-date, technologically advanced training equipment and facilities through the continued support of industry manufacturers and local dealers. BiologY* The LMC Biology Department offers general education courses for transfer and associate of science degrees, as well as pre-nursing classes for students interested in applying to RN and LVN programs. Business Administration The Associate in Science in Business Administration for Transfer is designed for students desiring advanced degrees in business administration. The LMC business administration courses meet lower division transfer requirements for business degrees such as accounting, marketing, management, international business or finance. The curriculum includes the first- and second-year requirements for transfer to a four-year institution. LMC offers certificates in accounting, office administration, retail management and small business operations. POSSIBLE CAREERS:

Chemistry* The Chemistry Department offers students an opportunity to imagine themselves as a lab technician, engineer, doctor, nurse, biologist or scientist. It is the “central science” that encompasses all other branches of science. LMC offers chemistry as a general education requirement, an associate of science degree, and prepare students for entry-level positions in biochemistry and industrial chemical industries. Career PATHWAYS @ LMC Child Development The Child Development program prepares students to become early childhood educators, caregivers, and administrators of infant, preschool, school age, and special needs programs. LMC’s accredited Child Study Center offers students hands-on learning, while providing a child care service to staff and students. A child development major allows students the option of transferring to a fouryear institution with a solid background in child development and early childhood education, in preparation for an Elementary Education Teaching Credential or a bachelor’s degree in child development. Computer Science The Associate in Science in Computer Science for Transfer provides the foundational courses needed by the higher level courses offered at the CSUs. Enrolling and completing LMC’s program allows computer science majors to advance directly through the industry-recognized sequence of courses. Upon graduation, students can obtain highly successful jobs in engineering tech, computer networking, computer security, video game design, artificial intelligence, virtual reality and cyber security.

Electrical/Instrumentation Technology The electrical technician specialization is designed to train electricians to maintain complex electrical automation systems used in the manufacturing and power generation industry. The instrumentation technician specialization is designed to train instrument technicians to maintain the process measurement and control systems used in refineries, chemical plants, biotech plants, pharmaceutical plants, water and waste treatment plants. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) LMC’s EMS Program is one of the highest quality programs in the East Bay. An emergency medical technician (EMT) is a professional health-care provider who renders emergency care to sick and injured patients. EMTs are trained at LMC to provide basic life support at the scene of an emergency, treat patients during transport, and monitor patients during inter-facility transfer within an organized EMS system. Completion of the one semester EMT course qualifies you to take the national certification exam administered by the National Registry of EMTs.

Engineers look over products, do tests and collect data. Fire Technology Firefighting can be a very rewarding career. You have an opportunity to serve your community and make a difference in people’s lives. The Fire Technology Program provides an education in fire protection as well as fire prevention. LMC’s courses will help to prepare you for a future in the fire service. Career PATHWAYS @ LMC Kinesiology* The Associate in Arts in Kinesiology for Transfer prepares students to transfer into a curriculum at a four-year institution to pursue a baccalaureate degree in kinesiology or physical education. This major will introduce students to many areas of study, including health and fitness, physical education, therapeutic/sport medicine, and coaching/sport instruction. Law Enforcement Academy LMC’s Law Enforcement Academy is offered through partnership with the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff Law Enforcement Training Center (LETC) located in downtown Pittsburg. The Basic Academy is a fully functional law enforcement training facility consisting of the main academy building, a firing range, driving range, and off-site “simulated ammunitions” enclosed dwellings. The California Commission on Police Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certifies the Basic Academy.

Career PATHWAYS @ LMC Process Technology Process technicians are skilled plant operators who work for chemical, refining, oil and gas production/refining, power generation, water, waste management, food manufacturing and related manufacturing companies. The process technicians who run these plants work with state-of-the-art computer control systems, work outside taking process samples and monitoring the equipment, and solve problems in a team environment. No two days are exactly alike. LMC is the only college in Northern California to offer this program.

Career PATHWAYS @ LMC RECORDING ARTS There are many opportunities for the trained recording arts professional in the fields of producing, sound reinforcement, independent audio engineering, forensic audio, hardware and software development, equipment maintenance and repair, bio-acoustic research, theatre sound, and many more. The industry has undergone a major paradigm shift in recent years. “Studio jobs” continue to exist, but – due to the reduction in the need for large numbers of major studios – they are extremely scarce. Welding Technology LMC’s program in welding technology offers instruction in the principles and practices of welding processes. Successful completion of the program provides sufficient training for entry level into the field of production-type welding. Students have access to the latest instructional and practical experiences in a spacious, modern shop facility. Courses range from basic to advanced welding of ferrous and non-ferrous metals on sheet metal, plate and pipe in all positions using the oxyacetylene, shieldedmetal arc, gas-tungsten arc, gas-metal arc, and flux-cored arc welding processes.
