We were thrilled to welcome back our graduating Class of 2021 and their parents for their long-awaited Jubilarian & Awards Ceremony. The COVID-safe ceremony, also livestreamed to families and friends, was a wonderful celebration of determination, effort and application. Emily Smith, 2021 Dux of the School, addressed her fellow graduates in a speech which was recorded and broadcast to the whole Senior School the next day.

“It is with great privilege that I stand before you all today to share my story and acknowledge the people who helped to write it. Who would have thought this day would ever, ever come after remote online learning in Years 11 and 12, Trials moved back twice, Trials online, the HSC rescheduled… and the list goes on.

“More than the individual marks we achieved, I was proud of us, the Class of 2021 as a whole. I am so proud because I know the mammoth effort we all put in, over five terms, and the strength it took to keep going when everything kept changing and school went online. The State, Lane Cove, Stanton, Chatswood, Mosman and Loreto Kirribilli libraries miss you already and I cannot wait to see you go far.

“It is an honour to have grown up alongside you all and I know the future engineers, lawyers, teachers, nurses, business owners, mothers, etc. that you will all become, will make me proud to say, ‘I went to high school with her.’

“Our amazing achievement is a testament to the teachers here at Loreto Kirribilli. The things we disliked about this year, such as remote online learning and being apart from one another, would have been the same at any school. But the things that made this year what it was, and what I loved about it were unique to Loreto Kirribilli, largely due to the teachers and their infectious passion for learning. There is something truly special about the teachers at Loreto Kirribilli in that they treat you as adults and go above and beyond to help you succeed.

“To our families, thank you for the constant support, the fully stocked pantry and fridge for study snacks, the Officeworks supplies and anything else we may have needed. We could not have done it without you."

Emily Smith ('21)
