Volume 23 - 4 August, 2015 Dear Parents and Students
There are many things to celebrate and people to acknowledge when I reflect on last week. Firstly, can I thank the hundreds of parents and students who attended Interview Day on Tuesday and acknowledge the work of teachers, many of whom had over 60 interviews. Effective partnerships between parents and teachers is fundamental to Catholic education and to creating strong and supportive environments for our students. Our Semester 2 Mass, scheduled for Thursday, became a Communion Service when Fr Paul Sirah was called away to attend the funeral of his brother Carmelite, Fr Frank Shortis. I would like to acknowledge Mr Kieran Donnelly for his care and skill in adapting the liturgy that had been prepared. Year 12 students led the Service with poise and reverence and four girls from Year 7 reflected on the readings. All these students appeared to have been rehearsing for weeks when, in reality, their preparation had begun the previous day! I would like to share the first reading from this liturgy and some of the reflections of our Year 7s. 1
But now, this is what the Lord says— he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. 2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. 3 For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour; I give Egypt for your ransom, Cush and Seba in your stead. 4 Since you are precious and honoured in my sight, and because I love you, I will give people in exchange for you, nations in exchange for your life. Do not be afraid, for I am with you. Isaiah 43: 1-4
We think the message of the first reading is that God loves us, cares for us and will always be there for us. One of the lines in the reading is “I have called you by name, you are mine”. To have God single us out from everyone else in the world is a special feeling because He believes in us to do good and do it well.
We think the message of the first reading is that God knows you, loves you, protects you and is with you. The reading says “when you pass through the waters, I will be with you; … when you walk through fire, you shall not be burned”. This is God promising to protect you from all harm, to be with you always and to support you in all your endeavours. At the end of the day, God will always love, protect and respect us. Zoe Henman, Ciara Ritchie, Nina Moore & Chloe Lloyd
We were joined for the Service by past pupils who graduated 50 or more years ago. On behalf of the College, I thank them for their attendance, for chatting with our Year 8 students about their days at Loreto, and for sharing their stories and friendship. It is a great pleasure to have these wonderful women join us each year.

CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK Q&A I would also like to share with you the reflections of Georgia Garrett, who was one of five students from Brisbane Catholic Colleges to participate in the Catholic Education Week Q&A on the topic of Social Media - More harm than good? How would Jesus use social media? On Wednesday 29 July, I had the privilege of being a speaker on the Q&A panel for the launch of Catholic Education Week. It was an honour to share the panel with students from various schools, Madonna King and the Minster for Education, Kate Jones. When approaching the topic of Social Media, I was daunted. Do I lie? Do I pretend to be the perfect student who doesn’t ever go on Facebook and doesn’t sleep with her phone beside her pillow? However, the panel allowed us to be honest and discuss the real and confronting problems of social media. Some of the dangers that teenagers are faced with today are over-exposure to negative themes and influences as well as cyber bullying. While we need social media and technology to advance in today’s world, it is important that we learn about the dangers. It can become an addiction. It is imperative to stay true to yourself and your beliefs when online. We know about our digital footprint and that, once created, it is out there for the world to see. It is also important to maintain a healthy balance of digital and face to face relationships. I thank Georgia for representing Loreto with such grace and warmth. STAFF NEWS Last Friday, we farewelled Mr Alan Lane-Richardson who has retired after just over six years at Loreto Coorparoo. As well as teaching in the IT and Science Departments, Mr Lane-Richardson shared his enthusiasm for many other pursuits with students and colleagues. He introduced the girls to robotics, coordinated Hockey, conducted wine tastings (for staff only!) and initiated the school’s participation in the Kokoda Challenge. His commitment to this last activity is so strong that he would not leave until he had extracted firm promises from other staff to continue to train and enter Loreto teams. We thank him for all he has done at Loreto and wish him many new adventures in what is sure to be a very active ‘retirement’. On Monday, we welcomed Mr Timothy Joyce to replace Mr Lane-Richardson in IT and Science. We hope his time at Loreto is happy and rewarding. CONGRATULATIONS To Christina Stephanos (Year 11) who has been accepted into the QUT Vice-Chancellor’s STEM Camp based on her academic achievement and passion in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Christina will join a group of high achieving year 11 students from around Queensland in a five day camp where she will get a taste of university life and work together with other Year 11 students, as well as academics and QUT students, in an intensive and hands-on research project. Well done, Christina!
CONDOLENCES To Mrs Anne Heathcote (past staff member) and to Greta (1999), Alice (2002), Georgia (2004) and Phoebe (2006) on the death of their mother and grandmother last week. May she rest forever in God’s love and peace. Amen. To the Carmelite Community as they mourn the loss of Fr Frank Shortis who died in Melbourne just over a week ago. Fr Frank was a gentle, scholarly and holy man who ministered to the Loreto community in many ways during his years at Mt Carmel Parish. May he rest in peace. Amen
Yours sincerely Helen Carty Acting Principal

English News - The Old and New of New Farm The birds swoop low and the roots of the trees claw out onto the foot paths. The park sits below the vast shadow of the bridge. There is a strange sense of quiet in the park with the hum of traffic above and the stillness below. The continuous structure of the bridge expands above the park, like a man-made sky of metal bolts and beams. This is where people come to escape, to have freedom, to forget. To have the foolish belief that they’ll feel fulfilled just by watching the river flow by. But the only thing one realises when sitting in this park is that everywhere is brighter than where you are. All light is enveloped by the city across the river. With the glass towers and the river capturing the sun like crystals, reflecting the light onto its surroundings. This light never seems to reach the park. Nor the people who dwell in it. Laura Schenk The pouring rain surrounds me like a lion surrounds its prey. Pat pat, pat pat. Yet I am completely dry from the roof above, more like seeing a lion from the safety of a safari vehicle. The park is completely desolate, no one brave enough to venture out into the soggy, unappealing grass. Most people are probably tucked up warm in bed with hot chocolate from the comfort of their own home. However, when the rains commence, there is no place I'd rather be than the gazebo. The ability to view the beauty of rain up close in complete tranquillity without the fear of becoming drenched is something that has always helped give me perspective. Even though venturing out of your comfort zone may seem unpleasant, you can always find safety within yourself and your surroundings. Alex White An emerald dew dropped carpet stretched before me as I wandered towards the roses. I often came here to think. As I reached the garden I breathed in to enjoy the delicate scent of lavender and rose, like a perfume procured by Mother Nature herself. The tangled stems of thorned roses provided a gated paradise for the bright green inch worms munching on rose leaves. Like clockwork, the worms slowly inched towards the tastier, greener leaves. I reach out and pluck a single petal from a beige coloured rose. Where my fingertips touched, the petal turned a darker shade as it bruised instantly. Julia Palmer Something’s very different about this place. When I was a little girl I remember running through the rose gardens and playing for hours in this huge playground with swarms of little kids. But now, huddling under this wet, rotten playground all I can see in the distance are wilted roses, dark clouds and isolation. The squawking of a nearby crow is growing louder and more constant and the smell of the damp wood is making me sick. The snapping of sticks and shifting of leaves from the surrounding trees behind me makes me come to realise I need to run, because I know now that I am not safe. From here, everything seems peaceful, but I know that something’s not right. Amanda Hansen The dining room, a grand area fit for a party of the Kings. But the musky smell of wood alluded to the current tame use of the room. Chandeliers hung from the roof like clouds in the sky, a simple beauty that the eye could not help but be attracted to. Silverware adorned the room, polished surfaces chilled stray fingers. To my side, stained glass windows shone vividly with colours only found from God’s personal painting palette. Signs of the 21st century and the artificial warmth from heaters were absent. With the sounds of the outside world masked by thick walls, I could be forgiven for thinking that I had stepped into the past. Christina Stephanos
It was a place where giants left their feet half buried in the ground, their veins spilling and tangling across the green expanse. Little feet explored the remains, climbing up the toes, the ankle, getting lost in its green, leafy hair. With dirt smeared faces, grubby fingernails and smelling of bark, they ventured further up the ancient remains, hoping to get a grand view of the world below like a giant would. City life seemed so far away as they grazed their hands and knees on the rough skin of the giant’s feet, until the echo of the familiar, disheartening call signalled the end of the adventure. They piled back into the car, still buzzing and tingling after a taste of the wild, their eyes bright and alive, gazing out the window hoping to catch a glimpse of the giant awakening. Yasmin Abraham

As I look out to the city that I thought I knew, I wonder to myself, what makes up Brisbane? Horizontal lines, vertical lines, diagonal lines, everything in lines, everything following lines, everyone going somewhere with a place to be. The never ending Story Bridge, with the never ending buildings that surround it, towers over everything. Edges that fall and rise almost like mountain tops waiting to be climbed and explored. The people with their heads down and their phones up, are like robots. This place I used to call home is now just a dull, dark, distressing nightmare. Will this city ever be a place that I can call home again? Zoe McNamee

Performing Arts Queensland Theatre Company’s Theatre Residency Week Theatre Residency Week (TRW) is a week-long in residence program for students in Years 9-12 held in the September/October school holidays. Students embark on a week of intensive skills development workshops, view live performances, network with leading artists and work with over one hundred like-minded young people from all over Queensland. The residency has been running for over 40 years and has been attended by some of Australia's theatre greats such as Geoffrey Rush, Deborah Mailman, and QTC's Artistic Director Wesley Enoch. Theatre Residency Week will run in the September school holidays in 2015, from Sunday 27 September to Saturday 3 October. Music News Congratulations - To the members of Sorelle and Big Band who performed brilliantly at the Mount Carmel Fete on Sunday. The feedback we have received was outstanding. Great work! Upcoming Performances – Our next major performance opportunity is this Sunday’s Open Day. Please carefully note the time and venue of your involvement.
Open Day – Exit Stage Left, Chorale, Guitar Ensemble One: On Sunday 9 August the College runs our Open Day, which is an important event for the future of the school in that it is our main showcase to prospective parents as to what Loreto has to offer their daughters. On this day, the Music Department will be supplying the following performances: *10 AM Guitar Performances (invited Loreto Music Festival Finalists) for 15 min in the MWC; *10:20 AM Exit Stage Left (MWC Stage); *11AM to 12PM Open Rehearsals by Guitar Ensemble One (MWC Stage), Chorale (713), Exit Stage Left (711); Classroom Display with Yr 10 Volunteers (712) On this day students will need to wear school uniform with the exception of Guitar Ensemble One and Exit Stage Left, who will wear performance blacks. Catholic Colleges Music Festival – Performance times for all Loreto Ensembles are again published later in this newsletter. QCMF is one of our three compulsory performances for each year (along with the Autumn Concert and Music Night/Live & Wired) so it is our expectation that all students will attend at the published times. If you have any difficulties, eg clashes with other commitments, please contact Mr Langford urgently to negotiate a suitable solution. Primary Music Camp – Each year (in 2015 Sunday 23 August is the date), Loreto College and our music students host a very popular Music Camp for primary students of local schools. The event is extremely well attended by more than 80 students from upwards of 20 different schools! On the day students play with and tutor 2 concert bands, 1-2 string ensembles, a guitar ensemble and a choir, before hosting a concert for these groups. Could all members of Concert Band One, Guitar Ensemble One, Senior Choir and Chamber Strings/String Ensemble please expect to make themselves available at some stage during the day to either tutor for a session, or to perform in the afternoon concert (approximately 3pm to 4pm). The Primary Music Camp is an important and inspiring service our girls provide for the younger students, who frequently return to the camp year after year, whether or not they are intending to come to Loreto for secondary school. QCMF – please volunteer! QCMF is a major performance goal each year for hundreds of Catholic schools from South East Queensland and beyond, and it is run almost entirely by volunteers from the Villanova community. As a school that benefits enormously from this event (we are entering 20 ensembles this year – out largest ever number!) it would be fantastic if some Loreto parents and senior students could volunteer to help. You do not need to take on massive responsibility – help can be as simple as committing to baking some cakes for the food stalls, carrying stands and chairs backstage, or ushering on the door at one of the venues. If you enjoy public speaking, particularly senior students, you could compere a section, reading

supplied by each ensemble director. AND, if you sign up to work at the venue and time at which your daughter is performing, you will be there anyway – there are always enough helpers that you will have time to duck inside to properly watch your daughter play or sing! It is easy to register at http://www.qcmfvolunteering.com so please get involved. Other QCMF Information for Parents – Don’t forget that you can find out everything you need to know about QCMF at their website: http://www.qcmf.com.au/wp-content/uploads/QCMF-Information-Brochure-2015.pdf . Most importantly, you should be aware that:
QCMF is run over 4 days and 7 different venues, including St James Hall and Church one block from the College (about a 10 min walk).
QCMF does not make a profit but to help cover costs of hiring professional equipment and adjudicators, audience members are asked to purchase a ticket ($5 for an all venue single day pass, $10 for an all venue four day pass).
Parking is difficult as only street parking is available. Please allow plenty of time to find a park and get inside the venue or you may miss your daughter’s performance.
It should be obvious that audience members entering or leaving a venue while a group is trying to perform their best can be highly disruptive. Therefore volunteers at the door WILL NOT LET YOU IN at any time while a group is playing. Please allow yourself enough time to enter the venue one group prior to your daughter’s performance so that you are not disappointed.
A large variety of well-priced food and drink options are available at each venue, particularly Villanova College itself.
Extended Rehearsals: Senior Choir – At Loreto we understand that students commit at the start of the year to a busy rehearsal and concert schedule and we place high expectations on their attendance for these times. Additionally, some advanced groups have regular performances beyond most ensembles (eg Mount Carmel Fete and Open Day). We therefore avoid calling extra rehearsals, and say no to many extra performance requests that we receive, to be fair to students who can have a very full work load. However, on certain occasions when our regular schedule has been heavily disrupted it is necessary to find some extra rehearsal time so that students can feel confident and proud of their achievements at performances. In this respect, and as per the College Calendar, we occasionally extend some afternoon rehearsals in the approach to QCMF to make up for some of these disruptions. We have found, as students are already at the regular rehearsal, that this is a manageable way of making up lost time, and is far less disruptive than scheduling extra sessions. This year we are asking that Senior Choir rehearsal be extended to 5:30 pm for the following two weeks (Tuesday 4 August and Tuesday 11 August). We ask students and parents to respect and support this change as its goal is purely to make sure the group’s members feel properly prepared for their upcoming Festival performance. Music Support Group – The next monthly meeting will be held in Cruci this Wednesday 19 August. All parents of music students are encouraged to attend. Our current focuses will be the upcoming Primary Music Camp and getting organised for our major fundraiser at the end of the year – the Mega Raffle. QCMF Schedule – Loreto College - All students in the performing bands are expected to attend. More information will be in future newsletters but please lock in the dates for this important event. Fundraising Dinner Reminder - Room to Read Projects in Nepal Loreto has supported Room to Read’s fundraising dinners in the Mary Ward Centre because of their shared purpose – the transformational impact of education. This year, the dinner will fundraise to rebuild its projects in earthquake-ravaged Nepal. Nepal is very special to Room to Read. Way back in 1998, John Wood, on a trekking holiday from his Microsoft job visited a school that had NO books! They said "Come back. Bring books". And he did! He then started the organisation, Room to Read. Since then, Room to Read have built 3776 libraries and 1101 schools in Nepal, and published 269 titles in Nepalese. It's important to rebuild these schools and libraries as quickly as possible because getting kids back to school creates normalcy in their lives. You may like to check out Room to Read and donate: www.roomtoread.org Please support this very worthy cause. See attached flyer to book your table for a scrumptious dinner and night out. Thanks.

You’re invited Room to Read‘s
Dinner to make a Difference Fundraising Dinner to Repair Schools in Nepal
Saturday 19 September 2015 6.30pm
Trekking was central to the formation of Room to Read. In 1998, Microsoft executive John Wood, on a trek in Nepal met a teacher who invited him to a school. John was confronted with the harsh reality of education in rural Nepal. The headmaster spoke the nine words that would forever change John’s life: “Perhaps, Sir, you will someday come back with books.” John returned to Nepal the following year, with a train of 8 donkeys bearing 37 boxes of books. What started as one man’s efforts to provide books to a rural community is now Room to Read, a global organisation transforming the lives of millions of children in ten countries in the developing world, by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education.
