BEYOND Loreto Coorparoo August 2024

Welcome.

Welcome to our 2024 Beyond Loreto Coorparoo edition. I am delighted to invite you to take a moment to peruse the magazine as we share the outstanding achievements of our past pupils, College news, and update you on our key projects.

Welcome from the Principal

One of the most exciting developments at the College has been the approval by the state government of our master planning submission. Part of our submission includes the development of the property at 28 Dale Street which will form part of our overall campus facilities. As we commence our build, we are excited to see the development of a three-storey building which will incorporate a senior studies centre, a lectorial, multiple classrooms, administration areas, an outdoor learning area and an extension adjoining the chapel.

As part of the application process, the College engaged in consultation with the community on multiple occasions and I thank all those who took the time to engage with us. Feedback was considered, addressed and incorporated into our submission to the state government.

Past Pupils and their Mothers as well as our current Mothers, Mother figures and Grandmothers are most welcome to attend our Loreto Ladies Long Lunch on Friday 6 September at Victoria Park. This event will help support our fundraising efforts for our Capital Projects.

I take this opportunity to cordially invite our graduates from 1984, 1994, 2004, and 2014 to our College-sponsored Reunion Day on Saturday, 14 September at 2.00pm. We encourage graduates from those years to take time to attend as we lead a tour around the College, enjoy some champagne and canapes, view memorabilia from those years and catch up with old friends.

Past Pupils from 1974 were warmly welcomed to our Semester Two Mass, followed by lunch. Attendees reminisced, shared memories and re-engaged with their classmates, finishing with a rousing rendition of the Holiday Hymn. We thank all those Past Pupils who attended this event for their ongoing support of the College.

The song, Everything Old is New Again, written, ironically, 50 years ago is most pertinent as we make preparations to welcome the first cohort of our Year 5 students (since 1975). With strong interest from the community, we are delighted to share the embodiment of the Loreto education philosophy with a wider group of students. 2025 will also see celebrations across Loreto schools in Australia as we commemorate 150 Years of Loreto in Australia. The achievements of generations of Past Loreto Pupils is attributable, at least in part, to the foundations undertaken by Mother Gonzaga Barry back in 1875.

We continue to be proud of our Past Pupils including our Outstanding Young Alumnus for 2024, musician Grace King (2018), who embodies Mary Ward’s prophetic statement, “women in time to come will do much” and Outstanding Alumnus for 2023, Catherine Bremner (1992). Catherine leads significant work in global financial structures to respond to climate change and drive sustainability. You can read more about the work of Grace and Catherine later in the magazine.

We are also most proud of our most recent graduates of 2023, who achieved the highest academic results in the history of the College. I commend the work of our students, supported by their dedicated teachers for their achievements. With 100% of university offers to eligible students and 100% attainment of the Queensland Certificate of Education, we are proud that Loreto supports multiple pathways for our students. Of course, the essence of being a Loreto Past Pupil goes well beyond achievements and accolades, and, as we celebrate the virtue of sincerity this year, we know it’s the supportive and sincere relationships that mark the essence of our Loreto Past Pupils.

The Past Pupils Association at Coorparoo is deeply influenced by the courageous and inspirational Mother Gonzaga Barry, an indomitable force who shaped our Loreto Schools in their unique, large minded education, based on critical thinking and a compassionate heart.

Welcome from the LPPA President

Mrs Mary Clarke

She stimulated young minds into areas very foreign to a girl’s education, including inviting an astronomer to Ballarat to explain the night sky, so different from her native Ireland. She valued connection, friendship, loyalty and “esprit de corps” that is a sign of “a grateful heart and a due appreciation of the pains taken with their education”. Even with a hearing disability, Gonzaga listened and then acted practically and forcefully. In her 21 years as a leader, she and her Sisters set up 11 schools, including Australia’s first teacher training College for Women. I think today, with our instant technologies, we’d call Mother Gonzaga an “influencer!”

Our band of Loreto Past Pupil women (and men, students until 1974) value and promote our appreciation to our teachers, throughout Australia and in the many countries of Mary Ward ancestry. Our Committee are constantly being told of the connection that Loreto past students feel with each other after a short conversation, the same faith-filled, joyous education, academic rigour and a strong imperative to give back to the community. Younger Past Pupils say they’ve recognised the Loreto ring worn on strangers in trains, walking tours and tourist spots. The rapport is instant, sincere and deeply felt. “Oh,

“An Indomitable Force” Congratulations

so you went to Loreto!” is the start of similarities in House names, ways of being, genuine respect for the other and a critically appraising mind.

Loreto Federation in Melbourne from 11-13 October 2024, welcomes you and friends to a weekend of seminars, dinner and lunches and a Federation Mass, affirming all the Associations from around Australia.

Connection in Brisbane is through Decade Reunion Day (14 September 2024), The Seniors Luncheon and the Ladies Long Lunch, organised by the College for all friends of Loreto, on Friday 6 September 2024.

Facebook, Instagram and the College website are ways for Past Pupils to register and keep in touch with the latest initiatives from Loreto Coorparoo. This is an exciting time as Year 5 students will again be at the College, followed by Year 6 in 2026, in exciting new buildings and gardens.

We are very appreciative of support from younger Past Pupils; they are filled with the genuine Mary Ward and Gonzaga Barry initiatives and fill us with fun, gratitude and warmth!

Stay close to Coorparoo!

We congratulate Past Pupil and 1971 Loreto College Coorparoo Captain, The Honourable Ann Lyons on being appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia in the King’s Birthday Honours list. Ann was awarded this for her significant service to the judiciary, to the law and to the community in the Supreme Court of Queensland.

Farewell to the Class of 2023

The Class of 2023, guided by their motto “Dignity in Action”, embraced the virtue of justice and exhibited remarkable passion, spirit, and generosity throughout the year as student leaders of the College. They gathered for a final Mass at the College, followed by the memorable Valedictory Dinner at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on Friday 17 November 2023. This Loreto tradition allowed graduating students to receive their Loreto ring and provided an opportunity for reflection and celebration of their Loreto journey.

At the Honours Assembly in early February, we celebrated the outstanding achievements of the Class of 2023, marking the best results in our College’s history. Congratulations to the Top of Subject Award winners, our College Proxime Accessit – Lara Moraitis, and our College Dux – Chloe Murfett.

Congratulations to all students for their individual accomplishments. As they embark on their future endeavours, whether pursuing higher education, taking a gap year, or entering the workforce, we wish them the very best.

It has been wonderful to witness some familiar faces returning to campus as tutors and mentors for current students. Additionally, we were thrilled to see many past pupils attend the Loreto Industry Networking Connect (LINC) breakfasts this year, which has helped strengthen community connections. We extend our heartfelt wishes to the Class of 2023 as they journey beyond Loreto, and we eagerly look forward to maintaining contact with our newest past pupils.

WELCOME TO THE CLASS OF 2029

We were thrilled to welcome 164 students through our gates on Monday 22 January 2024. This year, our Circle of Friends expanded as students joined us from different primary schools, including daughters of past pupils. Year 7 is a transformative year of growth, learning, and exciting adventures.

One of the significant milestones for our Year 7 students was the friendship and personal development camp held at Kokoda Outdoor Education Centre in Term 2. This camp provided a valuable opportunity for students to forge new friendships, connect with their homeroom teachers and staff, and engage in various challenging activities. With their boundless energy, enthusiasm, spirit, and laughter, our students embraced every opportunity, displaying resilience and compassion.

Another highlight of the year was Mission Day, held on the last day of Term 2, which was highly anticipated by all students. The Year 7 students enthusiastically participated in the House Choir competition and enjoyed engaging in activities such as the cent auction, tombola, and lob-achoc. This cherished tradition not only fosters a sense of community but also serves as an important fundraising event.

As we enter Semester 2, the Class of 2029 is settling in, becoming more independent, and embracing the diverse range of opportunities that life at Loreto offers. It won’t be long before we warmly welcome the Class of 2032 (Year 5) and the Class of 2030 (Year 7) through our gates for orientation, as they embark on their own memorable Loreto journey.

60 years OF LORETO college

Timeless Tales

the aurora guitar ensemble legacy

In the heart of Brisbane, a musical journey began back in 2007, shaping the lives of Loreto College's talented alumni. It was there that the Aurora Guitar Ensemble emerged, guided by the passionate direction of retired Loreto music teacher - Dr Paul Svoboda.

An auditioned group comprising graduated Loreto students, Aurora quickly became known for their electrifying performances, wowing audiences at venues like the Queensland Performing Arts Centre and Brisbane Powerhouse.

Their breakthrough came in 2014 at the Adelaide Guitar Festival, where their debut album, "Every Second Tuesday," was the top selling CD. The momentum continued with "Sunday Sessions" in 2016, earning them praise from both fans and critics alike.

Returning to the Adelaide Guitar Festival in 2018, Aurora once again stole the show, cementing their status as a leading ensemble. Dr Svoboda's mentorship has been key, showcasing the timeless appeal and versatility of the classical guitar.

Last year, after 24 years of service, Dr Svoboda bid farewell to Loreto, leaving behind a legacy that touched countless lives. At the end-of-year Christmas concert, past pupils, many of whom are part of Aurora, organised a touching surprise performance in his honour.

Now, Aurora's journey takes another exciting turn as they've been invited once more to perform at the Adelaide Guitar Festival later this year. Aurora will be playing in a major concert at Her Majesty's Theatre in September, as the opening act for the festival. It's a huge honour and a testament to their hard work and talent.

As Aurora continues to shine, their story is a testament to the power of music and the lasting impact of mentorship. From their beginnings in Brisbane to commanding performances on national stages, the Aurora Guitar Ensemble embodies the spirit of Loreto's past pupils, enriching communities far and wide with their passion for music.

Being Faithful to Grace 150 Years of Loreto in Australia

2025 marks the 150th year of Loreto in Australia. The Loreto community, led by the Province, will celebrate the arrival of Mother Mary Gonzaga Barry and her nine companions to Ballarat. The whole network will participate in the celebrations and each school community, along with Bayview College in Portland and John XXIII College in Perth, will contribute to the events.

Mother Gonzaga Barry (MGB) was innovative and well ahead of her time. In her writings we can see her commitment to encouraging the students in all the schools she founded to be expansive thinkers, courageous, imaginative, collaborative and to be agents of change. The theme for the celebrations will be ‘Being Faithful to Grace’. This focuses our attention on the importance of listening for God’s verity and grace in our every day experiences. It was God’s grace to which MGB responded when she accepted the task of travelling to Australia after initially struggling with the idea.

The celebrations will comprise a travelling exhibition that features exhibits from each of the 8 school communities. These displays will include banners of introduction to MGB and her nine companions, mannequins dressed in an individualised skirt that represents each school, a revised play performed by students from each school and other pieces called ‘Planets, Pearls and Possibilities’.

Coorparoo will host the exhibition from late September to early October 2025. There will be other moments to mark this significant milestone throughout the year, including at our Semester 2 Mass.

In loving memory of Patricia Cranley, John’s wife and Elizabeth’s mother, the Cranley family has donated a significant contribution to support to educational aspirations of current and future students at the College.

Earlier this year on Wednesday 1 May we had the pleasure of hosting the Mother Daughter Breakfast at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, with over 300 guests in attendance. The event is a highlight on the Loreto College Coorparoo calendar, and this year was no exception.

We were privileged to hear from 2002 Loreto Past Pupil, Emmy O’Neill. An Australian transplant swimmer and triathlete, Emmy is a passionate advocate for organ donation, and the physical health and wellbeing of organ transplant recipients. Her inspiring story, emphasised the importance of female role models and positive and ambitious thinking.

During the breakfast, we also announced Grace King (2018) as the 2024 Young Alumnus of the Year. Grace is an inspirational musician, performing across Australia, volunteering to support community events, teaching and establishing her own private teaching studio. She has shared her research as a panellist on Women in Music raising awareness and inspiring change, with her key aim to support a more inclusive music industry. Grace is a wonderful role model for our students.

Loreto Industry Network Connect (LINC) Breakfasts continue to be a valuable platform for networking and connecting with past pupils and industry professionals across various career fields. These events have been successfully running for the past few years, fostering meaningful connections and opportunities.

These events are designed to inspire: to hear stories of passion, fun, excellence, creativity, resilience, and courage. The LINC Breakfast coincided with International Women’s Day (IWD), with the theme ‘Invest in women: Accelerate progress’. We were privileged to host esteemed guests from ACU and Construction Skills Queensland. Their perceptive views offered plenty of material for reflection.

We extend our gratitude to the students, staff, past pupils, and special guests who made this event a resounding success, reflecting the spirit of Mary Ward.

In the words of Mary Ward, “Women in time to come will do much.” If you’re interested in learning more or participating in future LINC events, please don’t hesitate to contact the Community Engagement Team at community@loreto.qld. edu.au

REUNIONS

SENIOR PAST PUPILS REUNION

Thursday 18 July was a jubilant occasion, as we welcomed back the graduating class of 1974 and numerous past pupils who graduated before then, for the Senior Past Pupils 50+ Reunion. The morning commenced with our whole school Mass, where we celebrated our wonderful Senior Past Pupils. During Mass, the Senior Past Pupil badges were blessed and then presented to our guests by Year 12 representatives. Mass was followed by lunch , the singing of the Holiday Hymn, accompanied by Principal Mrs Kim Wickham on the piano and finished with a tour of the College. It was a lovely celebration where old friendships were renewed and wonderful stories were shared of their years at Loreto Coorparoo.
