To Sophia Desses (Year 9) and her family on the recent loss of her Grandfather who sadly passed away last Friday. May he rest lovingly in God’s eternal peace. Amen. Yours sincerely Cheryl Hamilton Principal Dear Parents RE: ENTERPRISE BARGAINING PROCESS INDUSTRIAL ACTION I am writing to keep you informed about industrial action that will occur at our school on Thursday. This industrial action is linked to enterprise bargaining negotiations currently being undertaken within Queensland Catholic schools. The majority of teachers and staff at Loreto who are members of the Independent Education Union of Australia – Queensland & Northern Territory Branch, recently voted to take industrial action in the form of work stoppages.

I have been advised that on Thursday, 5 November, there will be two sixty minute stoppages (from 8.30am to 9.30am and from 9.30am to 10.30am). However, most classes will continue as normal. Where this is not possible, the students will be supervised. It should also be noted for your information that industrial action within Catholic education is being taken on a school by school basis. Along with other Catholic school employers, I respect the right to employees to take appropriate industrial action. I invite you to contact me if you have any concerns or require further information. Kind regards Cheryl Hamilton

Reporting For the first time the Student Reports will be available to parents in an electronic format. This is a further step in reducing our environmental footprint in terms of the amount of paper products used by the College. Respect for the environment forms a significant part of the Catholic ethos of stewardship of the earth’s resources. The procedure for accessing students’ reports will require parents to sign into Parent Lounge. To do this parents need to go to the College website and click on MyLoreto and select Parents from the drop down menu. Select Parents from the ‘MyLoreto’ icon

You will need to know your user name and password. Your user name is the account number from the parent account fee statement. If you have forgotten your password you are able to request a new one to be sent via an email on the log-on screen. Once this screen opens the Academic Reports for the students in your family will be visible. Select the reporting period and click on the name of the student that you wish to view. This will open the report.

Reports for all students in Years 7 -11 will be available after 3pm on Wednesday 2 December. Reports for Semester 2 2015 will not be available prior to this time. Semester Exams Dates for end of semester exam blocks are: Year 12 Exams commence on Tuesday 10 November and conclude on Tuesday 17 November. Year 11 Exams commence on Friday 13 November and conclude on Tuesday 24 November. All Year 11 students are required to attend school on Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 November for QCS preparation and practice sessions and House and Council meetings. These days will be normal school times. Years 7 - 10 Exams commence on Monday 16 November. Parents are reminded that if their daughter is unable to attend a scheduled exam due to illness they need to provide a medical certificate which should be handed in to Mrs Bongaarts at Student Reception on the students’ return to school. If there are other extenuating circumstances which necessitate students’ absence from exams, parents are requested to notify the College via the Year Coordinator or me. Wherever possible students are expected to complete all exams and Special Provision arrangements will be put in place to accommodate this. If you have any questions about exams, please contact the Curriculum Leader for the subject, the Year Coordinator or me at the College. Rehearsal Schedule Now that our final concert has been completed, students and parents (and conductors!) will I am sure be pleased to note that almost all rehearsals have now finished for the year! The only rehearsals this week will informal get-togethers to return music and have a bit of a break-up – individual conductors and Ensemble Captains will inform students in their groups if these are on. Please be aware that Senior Choir will hold one more rehearsal on Tuesday 10 November (next week) to prepare for the Graduation Mass on Thursday 19 November. Year 8s who intend to sing in Senior Choir next year are invited to attend this rehearsal and perform at the mass. Music Support Group Will hold their final meeting for the year next Wednesday 11 November. If you haven’t been able to make meetings this year, then this last one would be the perfect chance to come along, introduce yourself, and find out what is going on as we will be planning some dates for next year and saying farewell to some “graduating” parents. Private Tuition 2016 If you intend for your daughter to take Private Music Tuition at the school in 2016 (whether that be individual or shared lessons; vocal, instrumental or theory tuition) then it is imperative that you fill out the online enrolment form by following this link: https:// docs.google.com/forms/d/1RGnFa9RFBf9hGNK0_pxZkZ8t_2FzVmEi0pi66ZB0T9Q/viewform The Online Form is due for completion by this Friday 6 November. Please be aware that, the Loreto tuition fees follow the rates set by the Music Teacher Association of Queensland, who have recommended a slight increase for next year from the current $32.50/half hour to $34.00/half hour lesson. Loreto Fees will increase by this small figure as of Term One 2016. Ensemble Lists Have now been published on the Music Noticeboard. If your daughter has not received a published place, please email the Director of Music, Mr Langford (langfordb@loreto.qld.edu.au) urgently. This could simply be an error in transferring between Ensemble Rolls to published lists, or it could reflect that your daughter did not fill out an the online form to request a position in a non-auditioned group. If you are concerned, please communicate with the Music Department urgently so that we can correct the situation. Orchestra Nomination Some students may be listed as “Orchestra Nomination” for one of their ensembles. This means that Loreto is putting your daughter forward as a nomination for playing in the combined Loreto/Villanova Symphony Orchestra. We will now wait for Villa to complete their auditions and make their nominations. At that stage the Director of Music from Villanova, Mr Jones, and I will get together and select the final group from the resulting list. Being nominated doesn't 100% guarantee your daughter a place in the group, but it is a good thing – it means that we think highly enough of her abilities to put her forward for this advanced ensemble! Music Camp Now that 2016 ensemble placements have been finalised, we will very soon be sending out invites to next year’s Loreto / Villanova Music Camp. Invites will go to students currently at the school who have been selected in Guitar Ensemble One, Concert Band One & Chamber Strings; more advanced students from String Ensemble; and students in Senior Choir who will be in Years 10-12 in 2016. These invites will be sent to parent’s emails so keep an eye out for this and contact the Music Department if you believe you should be invited but have not received your email by Monday next week. Mega Raffle Draw Prize Winners: 1st Prize - $500 Cash – Margaret Wachnik (Cehajic Family Yr 11) 2nd Prize - $760 Weekend Away – Cameron Family (Yr 7) 3rd Prize - $300 DJ voucher & Bottle Koonunga Hill ’76 Shiraz Cab – Beiers Family (Yr 11) 4th Prize - $300 Car Service Gladstone Garage – La Monaca Family (Yr 8) 5th Prize - $235 Roadworks Driver Training Package – Brock Family (Yr 7)

Performing Arts Guys and Dolls This week auditions are underway for our 2016 Loreto/Villanova musical, Guys and Dolls. All students have registered on-line and have been emailed their audition time and venue. If there are any concerns, please email the Director, Miss Coleman colemans@loreto.qld.edu.au General auditions began yesterday and will run until Wednesday 4 November. Students who are required for a call-back audition on Thursday 5 November will be notified via email Wednesday afternoon. Our cast will be announced (via email) on Monday 9 November and contracts for participation will be distributed. Our entire cast and orchestra will meet for a full read-through of the script and score on Thursday 12 November from 3.30pm – 6.30pm in room 411, Casket Building Loreto College. On this afternoon contracts of participation must be returned to Producer, Mrs Lissa Gyte, signed by both parent and student. The expectation is that all cast members learn their lines and lyrics over the Christmas school holidays so they are fully prepared for rehearsals when we return in January. Please remember to read the information that comes home in the contract very carefully, especially the rehearsal schedule as attendance must be 100%. Lissa Gyte - Curriculum Leader - Performing Arts

Public Speaking Over the last two weeks, the Junior Public Speakers have been working hard and preparing for the Junior and Intermediate ESU Competition. Sofia Gray, Rachel Hegerty, Rosie Leeson, Fiona O’Sullivan, Maxine Sutton and Mikayla Staples have all delivered well-structured and varied speeches. Each has been confident and engaging. I congratulate them all and feel confident that the future of Public Speaking in Loreto is in good hands. It is pleasing to write that Rachel, Sofia and Fiona go through to be in the Junior Final next Wednesday evening, November 2. As well as writing a new speech with the title ‘Keeping up with the News’ they also have to deliver an impromptu speech. We wish them all the best! Equally exciting is the fact that Mikayla Staples, who is only in Year 8, entered the Intermediate section and was also sent forward to the Intermediate Final on November 9 speaking to The Power of the Imagination. Mikayla also has an impromptu speech of two minutes to deliver. Good luck to our four finalists! Speech writing continues …… Rosemary O’Neill - Public Speaking Coordinator

P&F News The last meeting has been held for the year with the 2016 P&F calendar the main point of discussion. We look forward to lots of exciting events next year, with some new and some regular dates appearing. A list of these events, including the regular P&F meeting dates, will be sent out prior to returning to school in January. A regular event that the P&F supports is World Teachers’ Day morning tea. Garry West, President, attended the morning tea where we supplied two large cakes in appreciation of the work our teachers carry out throughout the year. Garry thanked the staff for their dedication and support they provide to our daughters. A personal thank you will be sent to our team of dedicated volunteers, but on behalf of the P&F Executive, we’d like to thank all of you who have supported the events throughout the year and for giving of your valuable time to be a part of your daughter’s education. Carolyn Stanmore - P&F Secretary Calling for Year Level Representatives for 2016 Next year might seem like a long way off but we need to plan now for the start of the 2016 school year. To ensure we hit the ground running in the first term we are looking for parents to volunteer now as year level representatives. The job involves organising social events for parents, which may be held at the school, your home or an external venue like a restaurant, cafe or bar. If you are holding an event at a private home, we will provide you with a copy of the GUIDELINES FOR HOLDING FUNCTIONS AT PRIVATE RESIDENCES. Promoting your events is as simple as placing an advertisement in the weekly Loreto newsletter. You can put together your own advert or we can help you. If you are interested in becoming a year level representative, please complete the attached form below or contact Trish Willing via Garry West - P&F President email: willingp@loreto.qld.edu.au
