Volume 22- 28 July, 2015 Dear Parents & Students This week we celebrate Catholic Education Week and reflect on the values and character of Catholic schools, our own Loreto College in particular. I have worked in five Catholic schools during my teaching career and count this as a privilege and a blessing. I can still recall the moment I decided to become a teacher, attracted by the combination of academic, intellectual stimulation and pastoral relationships. This decision was certainly the right one and I have loved the years spent working with teenagers; they are clever, witty and compassionate, constantly growing and maturing, and life is never dull! Teaching in Catholic schools means that the dimension of faith and values is explicitly integrated into my everyday work and relationships. To work in a context that enables a strong alignment between these values of justice, love and forgiveness and day-to-day interactions and decisions creates the sense of harmony that John O’Donohue refers to in the reading below. It is indeed a blessing to find this in our lives. Callings

When we arrive on earth, we are provided with no map for our life-journey. Only gradually, as our identity forms and we get an inkling of who we are, do possibilities begin to emerge that call us. It is one of the weightiest decisions: to decide what to do with your life. The challenge is to find a way of life that will be in harmony with your gifts and needs. Following one’s vocation ensures that what you choose to do finds itself in harmony with your inner nature. It also means that this is the optimum way to unfold and develop whatever gifts one has. A vocation does not clear before you a smooth path through difficulties. Having a sense of one’s vocation does not in any way relieve one of the travail and turbulence of being human. Indeed, being true to one’s vocation can often require a level of generosity and risk that will cause great suffering, for more often than not there is no surge of light to clarify direction; the light on offer is only enough to guide the next step. It is such a relief and joy to find the calling that expresses and incarnates your spirit. When you find that you are doing what you love, what you were brought here to do, it makes for a rich and contented life. You come into rhythm with your longing. Your work and action emerge naturally; your energy is immediate. Your passion is clear and creative. You feel at home in your life, heart and hearth at one. Adapted from John O’Donohue Benedictus

STAFF NEWS This week, we welcome Mrs Mélanie Labaeye to the Loreto Languages Department. Mrs Labaeye will be teaching Year 8, 9, 10 and 12 French while Miss Tilly is on leave.

SEMESTER 2 MASS

We extend a warm invitation to parents to attend our Semester 2 Mass which will be celebrated in the Mary Ward Centre on Thursday 30 July at 11.00am. At this Mass, we will also be joined by past students who left the College 50 or more years ago. A focus for our celebrations will be the recent anniversary of the arrival in Australia from Ireland of the Loreto sisters. Sunday 19 July marked 140 years since Mother Gonzaga Barry and her nine companions landed in Melbourne, having been invited by the Bishop of Ballarat to establish a school there. The vision, courage and dedication of these women and their successors had and continues to have a significant impact on the development of Catholic Education in Australia. To find further information on this historic event as well as the on-going work of the Loreto Sisters, go to www.loreto.org.au. BEST WISHES 

To Georgia Garrett, College Co-Captain, who is one of five student participants in the Catholic Education Week Q&A with Education Minister Kate Jones and radio presenter Madonna King. The topic will be Social Media - More harm than good? How would Jesus use social media?

CONDOLENCES 

To Alex Palazzotto (Year 12) on the recent passing of her beloved grandfather. May he rest lovingly in God’s peace. Amen.

To Nicola Tracey (Year12) and Monique Tierney (Year 9) on the recent passing of their grandfather. We pray for his eternal rest and peace. Amen. Yours sincerely Helen Carty Acting Principal

Queensland’s Catholic Schools Celebrate Queensland’s 298 Catholic school communities aim to highlight their distinctive educational ethos as they celebrate Catholic Education Week from Sunday 26 July - Saturday 1 August. This year’s celebrations focus on the theme Engaging Minds. Igniting Hearts. Serving Others. Queensland Catholic Education Commission Acting Executive Director Mandy Anderson says Catholic Education Week is a special opportunity to celebrate the distinctive educational ethos of Catholic schools and share the great things they are doing with their local communities. “Catholic schools aim to provide an educational experience through which every young person has the opportunity to reach their full potential - spiritually, intellectually, socially, emotionally, culturally and physically. “The schools strive to make a difference, not only in the lives of their students, but in the wider community, by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society,” she said.

Catholic Education Week in Queensland will be officially launched by Most Rev Mark Coleridge, Archbishop of Brisbane on Wednesday 29 July as part of a Festival of Catholic Education being co-ordinated by Brisbane Catholic Education in the grounds of St Stephen’s Cathedral. Minister for Education Hon Kate Jones MP will also attend the launch event and deliver an address. Prior to the launch (from 11.00am), the Minister will join five Catholic school students in a Q&A panel forum. The Q&A will be facilitated by former ABC radio host Madonna King and the topic for the discussion will be Social Media - More harm than good? How would Jesus use social media? About 146,000 or 18.5% of all Queensland students, and almost 60% of students in Non-government schools, are educated in one of Queensland’s 298 Catholic schools. More than 18,000 teachers and staff are employed in Catholic education state-wide.

Art News In Term 2 Year 11 Visual Art Students explored the essence of Place through abstracted sculptural forms and painting. Inspiration was as varied as the intrigue of Venice to obsession with Ikeas. In the last week of term, Year 11 and Year 12 students took part in a full day workshop with Flying Arts artist Cheryl McGannon. Students experimented with print making techniques including dry point and monoprinting. This experience leads into Year 11’s Term 3 exploration of Identity. Leonie McCulkin - Art Coordinator

Career News 2015 Careers Market This year the Careers Market will be held on Wednesday 5th August in the Cruci building. This is an opportunity for all students to meet with representatives from various universities, TAFE, private colleges, Australian Defence and other post school education providers during the lunch hour. It is highly recommended that students in Years 10, 11 and 12 visit the Careers Market to gather information about courses and pathways they may wish to pursue after Year 12. This year we would like to extend an invitation to any parents who would like to visit the Careers Market during lunch (12.30pm– 1.30pm). University Open Days It is that time of year again when year 10, 11 and 12 students need to ensure they take note of the dates below for University Open Days. Performing Arts Paper Moon Production This term our ensemble begins intensive rehearsals for our theatre production, Paper Moon, to be performed to a public audience in Term 4. I wish to congratulate and acknowledge the talent and commitment of our cast: Beth Kassulke, Aislind Bell, April Lopez Vacquero, Aimee Conwell, Vanessa Everett, Elizabeth Winter, Anna McGuckin, Ruby Daly, Lucy Briggs, Isla Greenwood, Alice Downie, Zoe Schramm , Sophia Dabinett, Emma O’Brien, and Emily Lowe. Miss Coleman and I look forward to working with the girls and realising the artistic vision of this beautiful and original play. Lissa Gyte - Curriculum Leader - Performing Arts

Music News Upcoming Performances – The Music Department has quite a number of performances coming up in the month of August. I will publish all details as soon as they are available, please check back each newsletter to keep on top of any changes! Mount Carmel Fete – Sorelle and Big Band: Our performance times are now confirmed as 11:40 AM for Sorelle and 12 PM for Big Band Sunday 2 August. We will need to meet at the Norfolk Street entrance to Mount Carmel by 11 AM on the day, wearing our black performance uniform (as per Music Tour). To reduce the amount of equipment we need to transport and set up and therefore make this performance as simple as possible, we will be sharing gear with Villanova’s Big Band, who will perform directly after us at 12:25 PM. Following the Villanova performance we will pack down all equipment at 12:50 PM. This job will be very quick and easy if as many students as possible stay to help - we will be finished around 1 PM and ready for students to depart. Please note that Big Band and Sorelle will no longer be required to perform at Open Day! Open Day – Exit Stage Left, Chorale Guitar Ensemble One: On Sunday 9 August the College runs our Open Day, which is an important event for the future of the school in that it is our main showcase to prospective parents as to what Loreto has to offer their daughters. On this day, the Music Department will be supplying the following performances: *10 AM Guitar performances (invited Loreto Music Festival Finalists) for 15 min in the MWC; *10:20 AM Exit Stage Left (MWC Stage); *11AM to 12PM Open Rehearsals by Guitar Ensemble One (MWC Stage), Chorale (713), Exit Stage Left (711); Classroom Display with Yr 10 Volunteers (712).

On this day students will need to wear school uniform with the exception of Guitar Ensemble One and Exit Stage Left, who will wear performance blacks. As we are asking Exit Stage Left to play at Open Day, we will no longer require this group to play at the Mt Carmel Fete. Catholic Colleges Music Festival – Performance times for all Loreto Ensembles are published later in this newsletter. QCMF is one of our three compulsory performances for each year (along with the Autumn Concert and Music Night/Live & Wired) so it is our expectation that all students will attend at the published times. If you have any difficulties, eg clashes with other commitments, please contact Mr Langford urgently to negotiate a suitable solution. Primary Music Camp – Each year (in 2015 Sunday 23 August is the date), Loreto College and our music students host a very popular Music Camp for primary students of local schools. The event is extremely well attended by more than 80 students from upwards of 20 different schools! On the day students play with and tutor 2 concert bands, 1-2 string ensembles, a guitar ensemble and a choir, before hosting a concert for these groups. Could all members of Concert Band One, Guitar Ensemble One, Senior Choir and Chamber Strings/String Ensemble please expect to make themselves available at some stage during the day to either tutor for a session, or to perform in the afternoon concert (approximately 3pm to 4pm). The Primary Music Camp is an important and inspiring service our girls provide for the younger students, who frequently return to the camp year after year, whether or not they are intending to come to Loreto for secondary school. Extended Rehearsals: Senior Choir – At Loreto we understand that students commit at the start of the year to a busy rehearsal and concert schedule and we place high expectations on their attendance for these times. Additionally, some advanced groups have regular performances beyond most ensembles (eg Mount Carmel Fete and Open Day). We therefore avoid calling extra rehearsals and say no to many extra performance requests that we receive, to be fair to students who can have a very full work load. However, on certain occasions when our regular schedule has been heavily disrupted it is necessary to find some extra rehearsal time so that students can feel confident and proud of their achievements at performances. In this respect, and as per the College Calendar, we occasionally extend some afternoon rehearsals in the approach to QCMF to make up for some of these disruptions. We have found, as students are already at the regular rehearsal, that this is a manageable way of making up lost time, and is far less disruptive than scheduling extra sessions. This year we are asking that Senior Choir rehearsal be extended to 5:30 pm for the following two weeks (Tuesday 4 August and Tuesday 11 August). We ask students and parents to respect and support this change as its goal is purely to make sure the group’s members feel properly prepared for their upcoming Festival performance. Loreto Music Festival – Congratulations to all students who performed in the Finals Concert of the Loreto Music Festival at the end of last term. I hear it was once again a wonderful event. Thank you to all the staff and senior students who helped with running the night, and special congratulations must go to the following section winners: Vocal Solos - Year 7: Miranda James, Year 8: Ena Beganovic, Year 9: Sylvana Diakogeorge, Year 10: Aimee Conwell, Senior: Anna King. Instrumental Solos - Beginner: Charisse Mone, Junior: Katerina Jackson, Intermediate: Hannah Robb, Advanced: Taylor Whitewood. Duets - Junior: Rosie Leeson & Lauren O’Shea, Intermediate: Lydia Weir & Rachael Dalton, Senior: Lauren & Grea Effeney and Rachael Larkin & Sophia Clarke (Tie). Open Ensemble: Lauren Effeney, Grea Effeney, Isobella Scott, Sophia Clarke & Rachel Larkin. Band Slam: “The Caspars” – Ella van Dyck, Anna McGuckin, Hannah Robb, Gaby Lynch, Audrey McCosker & Rachael Dalton. Perpetual Trophy for Winning House: Mornane. The section winners will be acknowledged on Assembly this Friday 31 July. Parents and friends are welcome to attend. We would ask all these girls to meet in 703 at the start of Assembly. Music Support Group – Last week, the parents’ Music Support Group held their annual AGM. At this event, we thanked outgoing President, Mrs Monique Gleed, and Treasurer, Mrs Michelle Dalton, for their service over a number of years at the College. We are also very grateful to our newly elected executive committee members: President – Mrs Kate McGuckin; and Secretaries: Mr Paul Isaac & Mrs Marina Weir. The generosity of these elected members, as well as all Music Support Group parents, is a key component in the Music Department’s ability to provide such an extensive and high-quality program for Loreto students. To maintain these standards, it is important that we also find a volunteer to fill the position of Music Support Group Treasurer. While this position sounds a bit scary, since the College finance staff took over the day-to-day operation of the group’s accounts, the job has become very manageable! The Treasurer’s main tasks are to: 1) attend meetings (8-9 / year) whenever possible; 2) collect a financial statement from the Assistant Business Manager and present this at each meeting; 3) Organise a small float with the College Finance Officer prior to events; 4) count money taken and submit these to Finance Officer after events. As you can see, there is very little bookkeeping or accounting needed as the College has taken over much of those aspects of the role. If any parent is willing to consider this position, please contact Mr Langford or Mrs Carr at the music office (music@loreto.qld.edu.au or 3394 9915) as we urgently need a volunteer to assist in this way. Free Tickets! The Queensland Symphony Orchestra, in conjunction with sponsors ERM Power, are offering school students complimentary tickets to a variety of concerts this year. If you would like to attend one of the following events: QSO Movie Masterpieces (Ipswich Civic Centre, Sat 22 Aug 7:30 PM), QSO & Simone Young (QPAC Concert Hall Sat 12 Sep 7:30 PM) or QSO Plays Balero (QPAC Concert Hall Sat 7 Nov 7:30 PM) then please contact Mr Langford (music@loreto.qld.edu.au) by next Monday 3 August.

Photo Day this Friday – Don’t forget that Music and Sport photos are on this Friday. Could all music students please make sure they bring their blazers and wear immaculate uniform. There is no need for most students to bring instruments for these photos. However, we do normally ask some small groups to do this, so if Beginner Brass Ensemble and Beginner String Ensemble could have instruments ready on Friday that would be appreciated. Congratulations to Sara Bakker for a perfect training attendance record and Catherine Weiss for attending all bar one session this year. Well done! Our last long distance joint practice hike with Cav Rd SHS at the Gold Coast was held on Saturday 27 June. The 30km training track followed sections of the actual Kokoda Challenge course. The training session started at Syd Duncan Pk, Lower Beechmont at midday. The track traversed Hellfire Pass then over Mt Nathan and through Nerang NP to the Nerang Cycle Way, Nerang. The aim was to finish by 7pm. Teams worked independently with their parent support crews to complete the course. Two check points were positioned along the way where teams could refuel and prepare for the next section. The training session went into the evening which gave everyone valuable experience with using their head torches to navigate the rough terrain. Everyone who started finished within the seven hour time frame. Taper week for the Kokoda Challenge event felt like a lifetime and did not go without incident. Nadia Conradi, our leader reserve, stood on standby with kit packed and ready to go right up to Friday afternoon as we waited patiently for a phone call. The stress ended shortly after midday when the text from Liz confirmed she was ‘good to go’. The Kokoda Challenge started on time at 11am on a glorious day. The completion rate for Loreto this year was over 80%, which was very pleasing. Other than some fatigue there were no injuries. As the teams crossed the finish line everyone was relieved

but chuffed with their achievement. Loreto One finished in 11hrs 17mins. Chris Rynne and her CavRd04 team Ella, Ruby, Kiah and Julian finished in 13hrs 22mins. Loreto Four crossed the line in 13hrs 36mins. Loreto Lightning crossed the finish line in 14hrs 39mins, the average time for all school teams. Loreto Wombats finished in the wee hours of the morning in 15hrs 25mins. Well done to Catherine Cockerill who joined Loreto Four at the last minute and completed the first 40km of the challenge. The Wombats are in overall 7th place on the fundraising ladder with $1,163.00. Well done Wombats! They are followed by Loreto Coorparoo Four with $760.00 and Loreto Lightning with $751.75. Still in the top 50, but only just, is Loreto One with $570.00. A good effort! The overall achievement of our teams would not have been this successful if it were not for the support of all the parents who have been involved since the beginning of the year. Thank you to everyone who has generously donated to our fundraising effort. Your support of our teams in their endeavour to support Australian youth at risk through the Kokoda Youth Foundation is greatly appreciated. Any further donations can still be made by visiting the Kokoda Challenge website. Finally, a big thank you to our two sponsors EDGE Orthodontics and Clarke’s Lifestyle Centre.

Work & Welcome For refugees and migrants, finding employment is a vital part of the journey towards feeling at home in a new country. The Work and Welcome program was founded by Padua College teacher Mark Taylor in 1993 as a way to stand in solidarity with some of the most vulnerable in our society. The program offers new Australians short-term paid work, the opportunity to gather local experiences, to build new friendships and to develop new skills. The Work and Welcome program helps them overcome these obstacles and is a valuable step towards re-establishing a sense of hope, dignity and belonging. Over 80 refugees and migrants have participated in this program providing benefits to themselves and the school communities fortunate enough to share their journeys. The Loreto College community is well on the way to reaching the target amount needed to employ a refugee for a term in an area of their expertise. Apart from employment, participants also share their experiences with students in class time, providing us with the invaluable opportunity to expand both our cultural awareness and our acceptance of backgrounds we may have never otherwise been exposed to. In order to make a financial contribution on behalf of the student body we will be holding a Mulicultural Day fundraiser.

Dinner to make a Difference Fundraising Dinner to Repair Schools in Nepal

Saturday 19 September 2015 6.30pm

Trekking was central to the formation of Room to Read. In 1998, Microsoft executive John Wood, on a trek in Nepal met a teacher who invited him to a school. John was confronted with the harsh reality of education in rural Nepal. The headmaster spoke the nine words that would forever change John’s life: “Perhaps, Sir, you will someday come back with books.” John returned to Nepal the following year, with a train of 8 donkeys bearing 37 boxes of books. What started as one man’s efforts to provide books to a rural community is now Room to Read, a global organisation transforming the lives of millions of children in ten countries in the developing world, by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education.
