Volume 26 - 25 August, 2015 Dear Parents & Students At this time of year, we are conscious of the turning of the seasons and the emergence of spring as we welcome brighter mornings and warmer days. I am enjoying watching the progress of the Mother Gonzaga Barry roses planted in the Circular Drive as bare stems just a few weeks ago and now covered with a flush of new leaves. It is an opportunity to bring the energy and new beginnings we see in Nature into our own lives and spirits. Spring is a youthful season coming forth in a rush of life and promise, hope and possibility. At the heart of spring, there is a great inner longing when desire and memory stir toward each other. Consequently, springtime in your soul is a wonderful time to undertake some new adventures, some new project, or to make some important changes in your life; there the rhythm, the energy, and the hidden light of your own clay work with you. You are in the flow of your own growth and potential. from ANAM CARA by John O'Donohue

Year 12 Queensland Core Skills Test Next Tuesday and Wednesday, Year 12 students across Queensland will sit the Core Skills Test which provides important parameters for scaling the results students achieve in their school based assessment. Loreto students began specific preparation for this Test in Term 4 last year and have committed themselves both individually and as a group to making the most of the input and practice sessions that have been held throughout this year. I congratulate them on their focused approach and am confident they will do well next week. I would also like to acknowledge and thank the teachers who have coordinated and conducted this all-important preparation.

Once the QCS Test is completed, Year 12 students often have a strong sense that they are at “the beginning of the end”. Graduation and the transition to the next phase of their lives suddenly demands more attention. During this time of excitement and impatient anticipation mixed with anxiety and sometimes regret, the girls need love, support and great patience from friends, teachers and family. I hope they experience this season in their lives as coming forth in a rush of life and promise, hope and possibility. CaSSSA Athletics Carnival Congratulations to the 100 plus students who formed the Loreto Athletics Squad at yesterday’s CaSSSA Carnival. The team was 4th in the percentage trophy and 6th overall despite many team members being sick. Thank you to the staff who worked with the girls during their preparation and to the Year 11’s who attended to cheer on our athletes.

P & F Parent Forum

I encourage parents to attend the P&F Forum at 6.30pm on Wednesday 26 August on the ground floor of Cruci. The P & F Association are keen to ensure they are responding to the interests and needs of parents and effectively supporting parent connections and engagement. Responses to the first Parent Forum held last year and results from the parent survey (don’t forget to complete this by midnight on 25 August on: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/JFWJP93 will be shared. I look forward to the opportunity to meet parents to discuss areas of interest and make positive plans for the future. Research consistently shows that students do better academically and socially when they and their parents are involved in the school community and when parents are engaged with their child’s learning. The Federal government has funded a new parent engagement app to assist busy parents do this. The free ‘Learning Potential’ app is now available to download on iPhone or android devices. LPPA Spring Luncheon

Also appropriate to mention in this Spring themed newsletter is the PPA’s annual Spring Luncheon on Sunday 13 September at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre. It is open to past and current parents as well as past students. There are some lovely gifts being provided by The Body Shop for all of our guests. Book on www.trybooking.com/DBMC by Friday 4 September. Student Illness Term 3 is always very busy, particularly for our Senior students. Unfortunately, it is also the season when colds and flu’s are most prevalent and falling ill can add to the pressure and stress for both students and teachers. Can I ask that parents keep students at home when they are unwell – this will enable them to recover more quickly and reduce the spread of illness. We are sending many students home through Sick Bay each day who really should not have come to school. Please contact Curriculum Leaders or Year Coordinators if it is necessary to arrange extensions on assignment work. CONGRATULATIONS  To the Loreto Tournament of Minds Team consisting of Caitlyn Faux, Jemima Ede, Lara Tomlinson, Mikayla Staples, Jessica Pearson, Hannah Page and Elizabeth Costi, who took out 1st place in Saturday's Regional Finals and now progress to the State Finals. Well done, girls!

Yours sincerely

“National Literacy and Numeracy Week 2015” Top Literacy and Numeracy Tips for parents Numeracy 

Talk positively about mathematics with your child – even if you struggled with it at school yourself. Staying positive about maths will help your child. Saying "I was bad at maths" can lower a child’s own expectations of themselves at maths and can give your child an excuse not to try.

Talk to your child about how you use maths in everyday life – and help them to see the real-life purpose for the maths they learn at school. Try talking about: 

the cost and value of various mobile phone plans to find the most economical option based on call costs, calling patterns, your teenager’s phone usage and analysing previous bills

household bills, such as electricity and water – analyse graphs and discuss costs and ways to reduce energy or water consumption or just how to make a simple budget. There are great templates for these online.

numerical information, statistics and data in newspapers and online (this could be sporting statistics, or weather information such as on www.bom.gov.au)

Ensure your child has all the equipment they will need for a maths lessons – e.g. a calculator, their mathematics workbook, a ruler, pens, pencils, eraser and other items.

Discuss time-management skills such as planning and setting priorities. Encourage your child to develop a timetable to ensure a balance of study and work commitments, home life and social activities.

Stay involved! Even if you don’t know a lot about what your child is learning in high school mathematics, try to continue helping them with homework. Just being there, expressing an interest and saying you want to help can make your child feel supported – even if you can’t help with the subject matter itself.

Ask your child if you can look through their class workbook together. Ask them to explain the examples their teacher has already shown. If your child has difficulty describing what they covered in class that day, encourage them to talk to their teacher. In mathematics, concepts and principles build on each other. They are like bricks in a wall. If a brick is not solid in your child’s mind, it will be difficult to build on.

Ask your child to explain how they work things out and check if their comprehension of the question is accurate – e.g. “What is the question asking you to do?” and “How did you get that answer?”

Encourage them to practise, practise, practise! Maths is a learned skill that improves with practice. Encourage your child to get their hands on as much practice material as possible – and do it as part of a regular routine.

Encourage your child to study for maths tests – they can ask their teacher for practice questions, or previous tests. Doing practice tests can identify where your child’s weaknesses are, and if they work on them, they can do better in the real test.

If your child is having problems with maths, send a note/email or talk to your child’s teacher or the Maths Coordinator. Let the school know you are committed to helping your child improve their maths skills – they are there to help.

Performing Arts A combined Loreto College and Villanova College production in 2016 - GUYS AND DOLLS About the Musical: Set in 1950s New York, Guys & Dolls follows a host of colourful and sometimes eccentric characters in a humorous and touching story based around the bright lights and shady corners of Times Square: it is “a musical fable of Broadway”. In the twilight world of gangsters, Nathan Detroit is losing his grip on the institution of the floating ‘crap game’ (the dice gambling scheme he runs that switches venue to avoid detection by the local police) and desperate to find the money to pay for the only location he can currently get his hands on. To seal the deal and quell the tempers of the gangsters who are gathering in town and keen to ‘shoot crap’ he bets his buddy, Sky Masterson, a thousand dollars that Sky will not be able to take a local Salvation Army girl, Sarah Brown, on a date to Havana. Meanwhile Nathan, engaged for fourteen years to cabaret artist Miss Adelaide, is struggling to keep her demands of marriage at bay, whilst she continues to battle with the symptoms of an incessant psychosomatic cold that plagues her all the time she is waiting to go down the aisle. Sarah isn’t taken in by Sky’s obvious charm and brushes off his advances until it becomes clear that her struggling Salvation Army mission will be closed down by General Cartwright if it doesn’t prove itself to be more successful in attracting the local population of ‘sinners’. Since Sky has promised her that one dozen of his comrades will show up at a forthcoming prayer meeting, she is convinced to travel with him to Cuba where, under the influence of alcohol, her defences slip and they realize they are falling in love with each other. On returning to New York, Sarah discovers that, unbeknown to Sky, Nathan and his buddies have been using the empty mission as a site for their crap game. Sarah feels duped and Adelaide is furious that Nathan can’t give their relationship priority over his gambling habits. At a crap game held in the sewers of New York, Sky bets all the members of the floating crap game that if he wins his roll of the dice, they will have to join him at the mission to repent their sins. After winning his bet, and after Sarah and Adelaide plot to reform their respective lovers after marriage, the mission is saved by a successful prayer meeting led by Nicely’s gospel-like confession and the couples tie the knot in a joyous double wedding. How do I audition? Later this term an AUDITION PACK will be available for collection. This pack will explain the commitment required and will include the following information: the audition process, call-backs, audition material, rehearsal schedule. Please keep an eye on the daily notices and the newsletter for when this pack becomes available. Auditions will be held in Term 4 and the cast announced before the Christmas holidays. Production Team: Many staff at Loreto College and Villanova College have confirmed their involvement in the Production Team and will collaborate to bring this musical to the stage. Trekking was central to the formation of Room to Read. In 1998, Microsoft executive John Wood, on a trek in Nepal met a teacher who invited him to a school. The headmaster spoke the nine words that would forever change John’s life: “Perhaps, Sir, you will someday come back with books.” John returned to Nepal the following year, with a train of 8 donkeys bearing 37 boxes of books. What started as one man’s efforts to provide books to a rural community is now Room to Read, a global organisation transforming the lives of millions of children in ten countries in the developing world, by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education.
