Volume 20 - 23 June, 2015 Dear Parents & Students Yesterday with the Winter Solstice we experienced our shortest day of the year. From this point in time onwards we see a gradual lengthening of our days and the ‘return of the sun’. But let us not miss this remaining glorious opportunity of winter to rest, stand still, reflect and ponder the seeds within us yet awaiting growth.

“Every gardener knows that under the cloak of winter lies a miracle . . . a seed waiting to sprout, a bulb opening to the light, a bud straining to unfurl. And the anticipation nurtures our dream.” (Barbara Winkler)

There is a winter in all of our lives,

Then winter, cold and bare as nature takes stock

a chill and darkness that makes us yearn

rests, unwinds, sleeps until the time is right.

for days that have gone

An endless cycle

or put our hope in days yet to be.

and yet a perfect model.

Father God, you created seasons for a purpose.

We need a winter in our lives.

Spring is full of expectation

A time of rest, a time to stand still.

buds breaking

A time to reacquaint ourselves

frosts abating and an awakening

with the faith in which we live and breathe.

of creation before the first days of summer.

It is only then that we can draw strength

Now the sun gives warmth

from the one in whom we are rooted,

and comfort to our lives

take time to grow and rise through the darkness

reviving aching joints

into the warm glow of your springtime,

bringing colour, new life

to blossom and flourish,

and crops to fruiting.

bring colour and vitality into this world,

Autumn gives nature space

your garden.

to lean back, relax and enjoy the fruits of its labour

Thank you Father

mellow colours in sky and landscape

for the seasons of our lives.

as the earth prepares to rest.

SEMESTER REPORTS

On Friday afternoon all students will receive their end of Semester Reports. With these reports will also come important information for parents regarding making appointments for the Parent/Student/Teacher Interviews on Tuesday 28 July. These reports provide an opportunity for acknowledging each student’s achievements and successes and also for reflecting upon actions she (and we) might take for her growth and improvement as a learner next semester. I encourage all families to make the most of this opportunity to engage in fruitful discussions. FAREWELL & THANK YOU We offer our thanks to the following staff who have been with us this term and wish them well for the future: Mr David Grimes; Ms Jan Findlay; Mrs Jane Bernays; Ms Jenny Sampford; Mrs Kerry Williams and Mrs Anne Heathcote. BEST WISHES We send our very best wishes to: 

Mrs Maree Inger who is taking maternity leave for the rest of the year. We wish her every blessing for the birth of her baby and look forward to news of “baby Inger’s” arrival.

Ms Amy Stewart who will be getting married these holidays. We wish her blessings and grace on her marriage and look forward to welcoming her return to us as Mrs MacDonald.

CONGRATULATIONS 

To Mrs Jody Anderson on the birth of her first baby: a boy Lucas James. We give thanks and gratitude for his safe arrival.

CONDOLENCES 

To Avalon Kelly Watrous (Year 7) on the recent passing of her Nanna, Goldie Kelly, aged 94. May she rest lovingly in God’s peace. Amen.

I offer my best wishes to you for the holiday period. May those of you who are travelling be blessed with the gifts of joy and gratitude and may your travels be safe. For the term ahead (as I take a period of sabbatical/enrichment leave) I offer my love and blessings. I will hold you all warmly in my heart and prayers wherever I go. Thank you for your prayers and your well wishes for my time away. I know I leave you now in the very capable hands of Ms Carty. I thank you, in anticipation, for the support you will give her.

God Bless.

Yours sincerely Cheryl Hamilton Principal

Art News Students of Year Nine Art began the term exploring the works of artists such as Duchamp, Fiona Hall and Donna Marcus. An excursion to GOMA gave them the opportunity to be exposed to the works in the Sublime Exhibition. Students selected a partner with whom they would work collaboratively and were allocated a bay of “Material. Using the five senses they explored their material, although they were encouraged to imagine the taste, photographed and drew them to engage with its aesthetic qualities and researched to understand its origins and cultural significance. After designing and negotiation the groups arrived at a focus for their work which could have been to create an artwork which responded to the esthetic qualities of the material or to use the material to create social comment. The creation of the work involved flexible, creative and innovative thinking as they resolved issues of construction and composition. Works ranged from photographic images capturing the beauty of the reflective quality of an aluminum can to a bubble wrap baby commenting on over protective parenting. Careers News 2015 Careers Market This year the Careers Market will be held on Wednesday 5 August in the Cruci building. This is an opportunity for all students to meet with representatives from various universities, TAFE, private colleges, Australian Defence and other post school education providers during the lunch hour. It is highly recommended that students in Years 10, 11 and 12 visit the Careers Market to gather information about courses and pathways they may wish to pursue after Year 12. This year we would like to extend an invitation to any parents who would like to visit the Careers Market during lunch (12.30pm– 1.30pm). Chris Rynne - Careers Coordinator

Year 12 Formal

The countdown is definitely on with the Year 12s eagerly anticipating their Formal on Saturday night, 18 July. A reminder for parents that the Pre-Formal function is from 7pm until 8pm in the foyer area of the Grand Ballroom on Level 5 of the Hilton. Please escort your daughters and their partners to the venue at 7.00pm and return to pick them up at 11.30pm. Parking is available at the Wintergarden complex, just next to the Hilton Hotel. You can book ahead online and get a cheaper rate. The link is http://www.secureparking.com.au/displaycarpark.aspx?carparkid=92 We are looking forward to seeing you at the Hilton.

Annie Diamond - Year 12 Coordinator

Year 7 & 8 Happenings Last Friday, Years 7 and 8 students were involved in a Brains in Gear day in their homerooms. The students explored ideas of meeting challenges in their learning with growth mindsets rather than fixed mindsets. They learnt about how their brain works and how different parts of the brain let us do things, think things and remember things. Working in groups, the students planned, designed and built tall towers made from straws to hold the weight of a tennis ball for three seconds. The students and their teachers had a fantastic day of thinking, constructing and putting their brains in gear! We look forward to students transferring this understanding into their everyday thinking and learning. Performing Arts Theatre Production – PAPER MOON Our commissioned script by playwright Victoria Carless is currently undergoing final edits and will arrive this week. It has been titled Paper Moon as this is has emerged as a beautiful symbol of friendship and truth within the play. Our cast will be finalised this week and we will meet for a polished reading of the final draft with Victoria on Thursday 25 June 3.30pm – 5.30pm in Room 411. I thank all of the girls who have participated in the weekly lunch time workshops. I encourage those who don’t secure a role to consider taking on roles within the production team and learning about the other exciting aspects of theatre production. I wish to acknowledge and thank the Facilities team and Mrs Leonie McCulkin who are busily creating set items and helping us realise the artistic possibilities of Paper Moon. Our production will be performed in Term Four on 22, 23, 24 October. Lissa Gyte - Curriculum Leader - Performing Arts

Music News Band Slam The Band Slam Final will be held in the MWC at lunch on Tuesday 24 June – audience applause and involvement will be taken into consideration in the judging so make sure you come along and support your favourite band! Please come along and support all of your friends who have made it to the final of this battle of the bands and see who takes home the prestigious perpetual trophy. Loreto Music Festival The final concert for this prestigious event is on this Wednesday 24 June from 6pm – 10pm in Mary Ward Centre. We have 60 finalists competing and it should be a wonderful evening of talent. Please come along and support all our finalists. Light refreshments will be served, thank you to all girls performing for assisting with a plate for supper. Any other students who are attending the Finals Concert are encouraged to bring a plate to share as, this event always draws a large audience. The Beginner Brass Ensemble is performing prior to the commencement of the Loreto Music Festival. The girls need to meet Ms Clark at 5pm in the Mary Ward Centre in full school uniform. They will be playing at approximately 5.30pm Recording Studio Students of Year 10 Music participated in the much anticipated recording studio excursion last week. The girls worked hard over the term to write four songs in their groups, which were recorded over two days. It was a valuable experience for all involved and we are very impressed with the results. Ensemble Rehearsals All Ensemble Rehearsals will run as normal this week except Friday (Athletics Carnival). Music Support Group AGM The Music Support Group is a fantastic group of parents who help at concerts (canteen, raffles), run social events (Trivia Night, Live and Wired Music Festival) and fundraise (Mega-raffle, Bar at concerts) to support Music Tuition Scholarships. The group’s next meeting on Wednesday 22 July is our AGM. At this meeting we will farewell some of the parents in key roles. While the group as a whole is incredibly supportive and always willing to help with all tasks, it is still important to have parents to fill vital executive positions. If you are interested in becoming involved in the Music Support Group in any way, or even willing to take on a leadership role, please feel welcome to contact the Music Office on 3394 9915. This event which was first held last year provides the opportunity for parents to meet with Committee members and find out about the P&F’s activities and plans in a relaxed atmosphere and away from the formality of regular meetings. Those attending will also learn more about the Loreto Master Plan and receive a high level summary of the results of a survey of parents. If you are interested, mark the date in your diaries and expect more details in future newsletters. Garry West - P&F Secretary
