Volume 27 - 1 September, 2015 Dear Parents & Students World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation Pope Francis has designated 1st September as a World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. In a spirit of ecumenism he has chosen the same day on which the Orthodox Tradition celebrates this respect for creation. The Canticle of Creation attributed to St Francis of Assisi seems an appropriate prayer for this day. Be praised, my Lord, through all your creatures, especially through my lord Brother Sun, who brings the day; you give light through him. Praise be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars, in heaven you formed them clear and precious and beautiful. Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Water, which is very useful and humble and precious and chaste. Praised be You, my Lord, through Brother Fire, through whom you light the night and he is beautiful and playful and robust and strong. Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Mother Earth, who sustains us and governs us and who produces varied fruits with coloured flowers and herbs. Praise and bless my Lord, and give Him thanks and serve Him with great humility. Amen Mobile Phones & Electronic Devices From a beautiful ancient prayer to a very modern issue! Over the last few weeks, staff have been reviewing the Mobile Phone & Electronic Devices Policy. A revised version of this Policy will be communicated to students and parents during the last weeks of this term. The rationale of this Policy is as follows Loreto College acknowledges that there are many valid educational uses of mobile phones and other electronic devices. However, the use of such devices during school times or on school activities must be carefully regulated and considered to prevent inappropriate use. Students’ engagement in learning, development of positive relationships and healthy social interaction should never be compromised by inappropriate use of mobile phones or other electronic devices. In seeking feedback from staff, I was struck by the rapidly increasing, valuable educational uses of mobile phones. Students use their phones to photograph the progress of their Science experiments, their sewing work and their art work. They download recordings of the music pieces they are striving to master for their next Ensemble performance or that they are using as the sound track for their Drama presentation. They photograph the solution to a complex Maths problem or the record of group brainstorming activities in History or Geography. As a parent, I know the value and security of being able to communicate about transport arrangements, especially regarding after school activities. But along with these obvious advantages comes a range of challenges! Phones can distract from learning and be used to damage relationships. Our strong view is that students need clear principles and very specific guidelines regarding the way they use their phones at school. The revised Policy states these very clearly and we ask for parent support in their implementation.

My key request is that parents lead by example. As adults, we can fail at this quite spectacularly; there have been some breathtaking examples of stupid and immoral adult misuse of technology reported in the media in recent weeks. In your homes, set rules that prevent mobile phones eating into quality family time. Don’t let answering work emails on your phones interfere with time with your children. Limit your communication with your daughters via mobile phone during the school day. Sticking to these rules is hard – but essential if we want our young people to grow into secure, resilient adults who can manage their emotions. Your daughter should not text you during the school day to tell you she is delighted with her Maths Test result, angry with a teacher who has spoken to her sternly or upset because two friends have arranged to go to Carindale and not invited her. She needs to learn to manage those emotions, solve problems by herself and wait to discuss the events of her day with you after school. Young people also need to respect their parents’ daily responsibilities and commitments and not disrupt them without very good reason. A copy of our revised Mobile Phone & Electronic Devices Policy will be sent home in the next week or so. I encourage you to discuss it with your daughter. CONDOLENCES 

To Giorgia La Monaca (Year 8) whose grandfather Sebastiano Mammino passed away last week aged 89 years. We pray for his eternal rest in the loving care of God. Amen.

To Olivia (Year 8) and Elizabeth (Year 12 2013) Spillane whose grandfather John Clark recently passed away. May he rest eternally in God’s loving peace. Amen.

Yours sincerely

Performing Arts On Thursday 27 August the following students participated in a workshop learning how to operate the sophisticated stage lighting system we now have in our Drama Studio, room 411. Technicians from Performance, Lighting and Sound showed the girls key aspects of the operation and by the end of the session they were designing some impressive lighting sequences. The new LED technology will allow every Drama student to download the program onto their laptops and design and operate the lighting for assessment and productions. Time will be dedicated to teaching this new technology to all Drama students. Miss Stephanie Coleman is also attending a full day training session in the coming weeks and she will pass on her new skills to the Drama staff and students. Thank you to the following girls for your enthusiasm and continued support of Drama at Loreto: Melike Hatcliff, Vanessa Everett, Aimee Conwell, Grace Winch, Zoe Schramm, Larisa Rany, Mikaela Keyzer, Kaitlin Carey, Sylvie Diakogeorge, Mia Wong, Elizabeth Winter and Zoe Bozikis. Music Extension Excursion Music Extension students will attend an excursion to see the musical Into the Woods on Saturday 3 October. Tickets for the Paper Moon Theatre Production will be available within the next couple of weeks via the College website. A release date will be published soon. Music News End-Of-Year Concerts – NEW CONCERT DATES For the first time in 2015, we split the Autumn Concert Series into three concerts and feedback from parents and students was generally very positive as this change allowed us to: 1) start each concert later ; 2) make each event shorter and; 3) finish concerts nice and early (one finished by 7:30 pm!). We intend to do this again at the end of year and therefore need to add a third concert date – Tuesday 20 October. It is my hope that this does not mean parents and students need to attend all three Loreto events – we have chosen the performing groups for each concert as carefully as possible to avoid this – however, if your daughter plays multiple instruments it may be impossible to manage. The end-of-year concert dates are as follows: Sunday 18 October 3pm - 7pm (Live & Wired Music Festival) Performing ensembles: Sorelle, Big Band, Exit Stage Left, Improvised Jazz Ensemble. Tuesday 20 October 6:30pm-8pm (NEW CONCERT DATE) Performing ensembles: Senior Choir, Junior Choir, Senior Chorale, Junior Chorale, Guitar Ensemble One, Guitar Ensemble Two, String Ensemble, Chamber Strings, Beginner String Ensemble.

Friday 30 October 6:30pm-8:30pm (Music Night) Performing ensembles: Concert Bands 1 & 2, Flute Ensembles 1 & 2, Clarinet Ensembles 1 & 2, Saxophone Ensemble, Percussion Ensembles 1 & 2 Symphony Orchestra Concert As the combined Symphony performed at a Loreto Concert earlier in the year, in Semester Two we will play at a Villanova concert. The date for this performance will be Tuesday 27 October. More details will be advised as they are available but please put this into your diary. While we always encourage students to demonstrate correct concert etiquette and stay for the full concert at which they perform, on this occasion we will negotiate for our girls to leave early if they need. We understand that this is an extra date above and beyond their regular Loreto commitments. Again, more details on organisation to follow. Lesson Cancelation for Term Four If you wish to cancel Term Four tuition for Term Four, you must do so by this Friday 4 October. You may do so by emailing a short note to music@loreto.qld.edu.au or your daughter can collect a Private Tuition Application Form from the music office and then return the completed form by Friday. Ensemble Auditions

On Sunday 25 October, we will hold Ensemble Auditions for membership of 2016 Music Ensembles. All students who wish to participate in an ensemble next year must sign up for an audition using the online form that will be available soon. Please don’t feel stressed by the need to audition – our aim is definitely not to exclude anyone! The purpose of these auditions is to place students in the most appropriate group for their experience. Obviously a flautist who has limited experience is more likely to have a successful year playing in Flute Ensemble Two with simpler music and a conductor who is a specialist on their instrument, than if she had to deal independently with the more advanced music played by Concert Band Two or even One. Conversely a student who has been playing for many years would be likely to thrive with this greater challenge. We also ask that students re-audition each year as, beyond simply matching students playing experience to music standards, there are also multiple considerations needed for placements within groups. For example, in the Jazz Band trumpet section, the first trumpeter has the specific requirements of being able to play the higher notes as well as lead the section accurately and stylistically, but the second trumpet player is a frequent soloist and should be a stronger improviser. In the String Ensemble, the position of Principal second violin requires a player to show more experience and leadership than being selected to play at the back of the first violins. Yearly auditions allow the conductors to make these detailed judgements and provide challenge and support for individual students even within an ensemble. Ben Langford - Music Director

Public Speaking ESU Girls are preparing for their October speeches. Most have ideas and a plan and a few have started writing in earnest! Those entering are asked to attend meetings so progress is checked. UN Youth Voice Registrations are now open for UN Youth Voice with preliminary rounds running throughout October. Years 7 to 10 students choose from a variety of topics ranging from poverty and homelessness to Australia's engagement with the Asia-Pacific region.

You’re invited Room to Read‘s

Dinner to make a Difference Fundraising Dinner to Repair Schools in Nepal

Trekking was central to the formation of Room to Read. In 1998, Microsoft executive John Wood, on a trek in Nepal met a teacher who invited him to a school. John was confronted with the harsh reality of education in rural Nepal. The headmaster spoke the nine words that would forever change John’s life: “Perhaps, Sir, you will someday come back with books.” John returned to Nepal the following year, with a train of 8 donkeys bearing 37 boxes of books. What started as one man’s efforts to provide books to a rural community is now Room to Read, a global organisation transforming the lives of millions of children in ten countries in the developing world, by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education.
