Volume 27 - 1 September, 2015 Dear Parents & Students World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation Pope Francis has designated 1st September as a World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. In a spirit of ecumenism he has chosen the same day on which the Orthodox Tradition celebrates this respect for creation. The Canticle of Creation attributed to St Francis of Assisi seems an appropriate prayer for this day. Be praised, my Lord, through all your creatures, especially through my lord Brother Sun, who brings the day; you give light through him. Praise be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars, in heaven you formed them clear and precious and beautiful. Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Water, which is very useful and humble and precious and chaste. Praised be You, my Lord, through Brother Fire, through whom you light the night and he is beautiful and playful and robust and strong. Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Mother Earth, who sustains us and governs us and who produces varied fruits with coloured flowers and herbs. Praise and bless my Lord, and give Him thanks and serve Him with great humility. Amen Mobile Phones & Electronic Devices From a beautiful ancient prayer to a very modern issue! Over the last few weeks, staff have been reviewing the Mobile Phone & Electronic Devices Policy. A revised version of this Policy will be communicated to students and parents during the last weeks of this term. The rationale of this Policy is as follows Loreto College acknowledges that there are many valid educational uses of mobile phones and other electronic devices. However, the use of such devices during school times or on school activities must be carefully regulated and considered to prevent inappropriate use. Students’ engagement in learning, development of positive relationships and healthy social interaction should never be compromised by inappropriate use of mobile phones or other electronic devices. In seeking feedback from staff, I was struck by the rapidly increasing, valuable educational uses of mobile phones. Students use their phones to photograph the progress of their Science experiments, their sewing work and their art work. They download recordings of the music pieces they are striving to master for their next Ensemble performance or that they are using as the sound track for their Drama presentation. They photograph the solution to a complex Maths problem or the record of group brainstorming activities in History or Geography. As a parent, I know the value and security of being able to communicate about transport arrangements, especially regarding after school activities. But along with these obvious advantages comes a range of challenges! Phones can distract from learning and be used to damage relationships. Our strong view is that students need clear principles and very specific guidelines regarding the way they use their phones at school. The revised Policy states these very clearly and we ask for parent support in their implementation.
