17 May 2011

Having just returned from two beau ful days spent on retreat with the Year 11’s in Toowoomba, my heart rejoices in their beauty and their honesty as they live out the aspira ons of this prayer. They are young women of felicity and goodness. May they always strive to deepen their knowledge of self and God so that they might bring to others the gi s of grace, love and laughter. GENERATIONS IN JAZZ In a whirlwind five day trip, the Loreto Jazz Ensemble and Sorelle group flew to Melbourne on Thursday 5 May. Their first stop was Loreto Mandeville Hall Toorak, where they were lucky enough to work with Sonja Horbelt (Chair of the Melbourne Women’s Interna onal Jazz Fes val and member of the Fes val’s Jazz Sextet). The next day they travelled to Mt Gambier, where they par cipated in the na onal “Genera ons in Jazz” Fes val. On Saturday the Jazz Ensemble competed, along with forty other schools, in Division Three of the Fes val, a division so large it had to be split into two sec ons. Sorelle performed with 17 other groups for Emma Pask and the Idea of North in the Vocal Ensemble Sec on. We were absolutely thrilled to learn that Sorelle received a special men on and the Jazz Ensemble was awarded fi h place in their band sec on, a fantas c reward for the hard work they had put into their prepara ons. Addi onally, lead trombonist Elizabeth Kehoe (Year 11) was selected as a member of the Division Three Superband, another amazing honour. Congratula ons girls. For all students in the group this was their first trip to Mt Gambier and to “Genera ons in Jazz”. I know they found it a deeply rewarding and unforge able opportunity. They are already talking about going back again in 2012. Our thanks to the fabulous Music Department and suppor ng staff for giving the girls this wonderful opportunity.

Loreto College Coorparoo — Felicity WHOLE SCHOOL SURVEY I am delighted to share with you the overall results from the recent whole school survey conducted on behalf of the College by MYP Corpora on. The par cipa on rates were pleasingly high and the results very impressive.

  

88% of Staff responded to the survey 74% of Parents responded to the survey 67% of Students responded to the survey

The MYP Corpora on categorise “sa sfac on” ra ngs of 80% and above to be “excellent” and define such schools as “schools of choice”. Clearly, Loreto is such a school with the following ra ngs:

  

84% for Staff 81% for Parents 79% for Students

The comprehensive report contains high praise for many aspects of the school as well as construc ve views about some possible areas for improvement. As you might well imagine, the 310 page report provides a wealth of data and informa on. It contains over 1600 individual comments alone, in addi on to a vast array of detailed sta s cs. The report also contains clear consensus about a few areas on which we will begin to focus.

In the months ahead, the leadership team will analyse the data more closely to develop a strategic plan of ac on for the future. Further communica on and consulta on with students, staff and parents will of course follow to form part of a shared response.

In summary, I am pleased to report consistent and high praise across all three surveys in the following key areas:

          

Ethos/Culture/Values Social Jus ce/Mission Pastoral Care/Welfare Grounds/Gardens Resources/Facili es Leadership/Direc on Repor ng Learning Environment Student Engagement/Connec on Teachers and Support Staff Music Program

The main areas iden fied for future improvement include:

  

Subject Selec on/Curriculum choices Sport op ons and opportuni es Provision of student laptops/e‐communica on

The overwhelmingly high level of support for the College in its Catholic Charter and Mission speaks volumes: 96% of parents either agreed or strongly agreed with the statement that “Loreto promotes and nurtures the Catholic Faith through Gospel values and the ethos of Mary Ward” and 93% also agreed or strongly agreed that “Loreto has a strong focus on social jus ce in both word and ac on”.

I thus commend and congratulate all those who have gone before me to produce such a wonderfully impressive overall result. I now look forward to your con nued support as we work together to ensure that this beau ful College goes from ‘strength to strength’ for the full benefits of all its students, both now and into the future.

CONDOLENCES Our heart‐felt prayers and sympathies go to the family of Mar a and Anita George (Year 10) whose grandmother passed away suddenly and unexpectedly last week. Please also remember in your prayers Eliza Batchelor (Year 12) whose grandfather passed away on Sunday. May our Gracious God enfold their families in his loving care and may he bring to them eternal peace. Amen.

Yours sincerely Cheryl Hamilton Principal Page 2

Every five years, the Australian Bureau of Sta s cs holds the Census. Quality Census data is vital to planning services for the community, including the educa on sector, both in Queensland and around Australia. The Census produces demographic, economic and other data that informs major state, federal and local government educa on planning decisions. For example, Census data helps governments to allocate funding for educa on, roads, spor ng facili es and medical services, just to name a few. In Queensland, the ABS will employ over 5,500 community‐minded people as Census Collectors. Na onally, the ABS needs around 29,000 Collectors to help with the distribu on and collec on of approximately 14.2 million Census forms to Australia’s 9.8 million households. We need Census Collectors with a strong sense of community, and good communica on and clerical skills. They will receive between $1,300 and $2,800 for the part‐ me, flexible and work‐from‐home posi ons, and will be employed from 1 July un l 8 September. HOST FAMILIES REQUIRED for students of

Kanagawa High School from Kanagawa, JAPAN attending

Loreto College July 20 – July 26, 2011 This is a worthwhile opportunity for your family to learn about Japanese culture, while sharing with your Japanese student the lifestyle of an Australian family. Families are asked to provide all meals and a friendly home for their student They will travel to and from school each day the same way as arranged for your own children

Yes, I would like to host a Japanese student, but… Will the student speak any English? Yes. However, as their English skills may be limited, we would ask that you speak clearly and slowly (but not in a patronising way) when communicating with them. Will I have to cook Japanese food for the student? No. Your Japanese student is here to experience an Australian lifestyle. This includes spending mealtimes with your family, and eating what you and your family normally eat. Is it OK if the parent/s work fulltime? Yes. During these times (e.g. after school), your Japanese student can spend time with your own children. Families who live near each other are encouraged to share transport, or other activities outside of school. Do we need Blue Cards? No. Blue Cards are only necessary if you are a hosting a student for more than 10 days.
