Volume 19 - 16 June, 2015 Dear Parents & Students This week is Refugee Week the theme of which for this year is “With Courage let us all combine”. This line, taken from the second verse of our National Anthem, invites all Australians to work together in unity and with courage for the benefit of all. It also celebrates the courage of refugees themselves and of those who act for and/or speak up in support of them.

It takes courage to be a refugee: As people who have faced persecution because of who they are (their race, nationality or membership of a persecuted group) or what they believe (their religion or political opinion), refugees need courage: 

The courage not to deny identity or beliefs in the face of persecution.

The courage to leave all that is familiar and step into the unknown in search of peace.

The courage to keep going in the face of devastating loss, difficulty and despair.

The courage to begin again, to work hard and to maintain hope in an unfamiliar land.

It takes courage to speak out against injustice: In a world where refugees experience persecution in their countries of origin and often face discrimination, difficulty and rejection in places where they seek refuge, speaking out often requires courage. In Refugee Week, we acknowledge and celebrate the dedication and bravery of refugee leaders, advocates and citizens who draw attention to violations of human rights, support people at their time of greatest need and challenge callous indifference to the suffering of others. A call for unity and action for a fairer society: The Refugee Week theme encourages Australians to celebrate the best aspects of our nation’s welcome of refugees, frankly acknowledge unjust treatment of asylum seekers and refugees and commit to working together to ensure that we do better. In doing this, we celebrate the positive contributions to Australian society made over the past 70 years by the 800,000 Australians who once were refugees, taking inspiration from the second verse of Advance Australia Fair;

As part of the end of semester reports Years 11 and 12 students will receive a projected OP band based on their results at the end of the semester. This is a guestimate and it is conservative. It is based on the cumulative results students have attained in each of their subjects and the QCS data for Loreto College students over time. When considering this parents and students need to consider the following points: 

Year 12 students have one more semester and Year 11 students have three more semesters to improve results, if necessary. Students’ potential OP range can change, either up or down, depending on assessment performance in each subject during the year.

It is important to emphasise that this is a broad estimate nominating OP bands. It is not a guarantee that students will achieve an OP within this range.

This information is provided to assist parents and students in Year 12 when making choices for QTAC and other end of year decisions. Year 12 students have been informed that they do not have to receive an OP guesstimate. If they do not wish to receive it, they have to let me know before the end of semester and it will not be placed in their report folder. All Year 11 students who are OP eligible will be given an OP guesstimate. This is to allow them and their parents to review their progress to date in light of a possible exit result. It should enable parents and their daughters to discuss their subject choices and make any adjustments that may be necessary. In Term 3 Year 10 students will complete their SET (Senior Education and Training) Plan. The purpose of this process is to assist students to: 

structure learning in Years 11 and 12 around abilities, interests and ambitions

think about education, training and career options after Year 12

set and achieve learning goals in Years 11 and 12, and beyond

include flexible and coordinated pathway options for a course of senior study

communicate with parents/carers or teachers/careers counsellors about post-school plans

There will be a Parent Information evening to be held on 3 August. On this evening information about subject selection and accreditation for Years 11 and 12 will be delivered. Parents will have the opportunity to talk to the various Curriculum Leaders about subject offerings and the appropriateness of selecting particular subjects. After this evening students will complete Subject Selection Online. This is a program that is completed at home in conjunction with parents. It allows the students to discuss their preferred subject choices and possible career plans with parents and to arrive at a suitable suite of subjects that will support these career/study options. This is followed up with an interview with parents, students and teachers regarding individual student subject selection and how these subjects lead to the preferred course. SET planning is quite an extensive and detailed process but it is important that parents and students are engaged in SET Planning as it allows students to make appropriate decisions about subjects for Year 11 and 12. Any students wishing to change subjects for Semester 2 need to see me as soon as possible. Changes will be made if there is sufficient academic reason and there is space in the subject to which students wish to move. Subject changes will not be considered afterTerm 3. Art News Year Seven Art Students were set the challenge of creating an image for a postcard which responded to an excursion to Southbank and the question ‘What does this place tell us about who we are?’ In preparation for the excursion students explored a number of ways artists record their understanding of place. They investigated the work of John Glover, Imants Tillers and ‘Fire Dreamings’ (a collaboration with Marjorie Napalijarri). On the excursion students collected information by using the five senses taking photographs, frottage and sketching. Uncle Joe Kirk shared his understanding of the significance of the Southbank Area to Aboriginal People. Students responded to the experience in a variety of ways that explored the importance of the bridges which included connecting the city to our highly valued green spaces, our core of the river, connection to history of the Aboriginal People and the importance of the environment to culture of the people. This has been a demanding task which has required the students to be flexible in their thinking and to be creative, imaginative and innovative. They are to be congratulated on their willingness to take on this challenge. Leonie McCulkin - Art Coordinator

Year 12 Formal With the RSVP date now passed, the Year 12s are eagerly anticipating their Formal on Saturday night, 18 July. A reminder for parents that the Pre-Formal function is from 7pm until 8pm in the foyer area of the Grand Ballroom on Level 5 of the Hilton. I know many of you will progress onto the Parent Dinner at Tattersalls, so I hope that you have a most enjoyable evening. Please escort your daughters and their partners to the venue at 7.00pm and return to pick them up at 11.30pm. Once again, please be advised that the girls do not need additional forms of transport to get them to and from the venue. Parking is available at the Wintergarden complex, just next to the Hilton Hotel, for a flat weekend rate of $10. Can I also please remind you that as it is a school event, students and their partners must abide by school rules, especially with regards to our Drug Policy of no smoking, alcohol or drugs. This applies to pre-formal parties also. We are looking forward to seeing you at the Hilton. Annie Diamond - Year 12 Coordinator

Year 7 Happenings “Create the Debate” was an excellent opportunity for the Year 7s to experience debating. We were lucky enough to benefit from the experience of a number of Past Pupils who are accomplished debaters. Many thanks to Chantel Morris, Samantha Bull, Courtney Pennington- Jones, Laura Nicholls, Sophia Markey-Towler and Maddie Little for giving up their day to help us. Also many thanks to the parents (Ms Katy Russell and Ms Maureen Kelly) who also volunteered their time to help in the preparation stages of the day’s debates. Some comments on the day were: I really enjoyed “Create the Debate” as before Friday my knowledge in debating was poor and now I can happily say that I know much more about debating. Having the past pupils coming was extremely fun as they played games with us and told us funny stories about their time in high school. I definitely recommend “Create the Debate” for future Year 7’s. Anyela Rogan 7Gold I didn’t realise how much fun it was to debate. If I had known this before I would have signed up to be part of a team. Maddison White 7 Red All together I thought it was a FANTASTIC day, as we got to work in groups, and overcome challenges, as a team. It was a great way to try something new, and share it with other Year Sevens, past students, and teachers. Sophie Mednis 7 White Anna Nielson - Year 7 Coordinator

At last, the early mornings are over and so are the climbs around D’Aguilar NP. Two training sessions remain and then the 48km Kokoda Challenge. The challenge is tough with two very big hills in the first 30 kilometres. The elevation of each is somewhere between 500 and 600 metres. This section also includes a number of creek crossings and the last decline will be done in the dark. The success of teams and individuals will come down to how well they have prepared themselves over the last five months. On Saturday 13 June we traversed a number of unknown tracks with lots of short but steep inclines. The unknown section traversed the lower section of the park near the Environment Centre. All teams who started finished except for Loreto One. On Saturday 27 June the third and final Joint Prac Hike with Cav Rd SHS will start at Syd Duncan Pk, Beechmont. This practice hike will cover the last 28km’s of the Kokoda Challenge track. The hike will give everyone the opportunity to see in day light what they will do in the dark. On this prac hike the Kokoda Challenge team drop out rules will apply. If a team loses its team leader, the team will need to negotiate with another team to continue or be forced to exit. Our top distance achievers Sara, Emily and Catherine have been joined by Isabella. All four are the first to have completed more than 250km of training. Loreto Coorparoo Four have clocked up 930km’s of training. They are 60km’s ahead of Loreto One in second place. Well done! All four Loreto teams are in the top twenty for school team fundraising. Which Loreto team will end up on top - Wombats, Lightning or Coorparoo Four? Or will it be Loreto One with a sudden unknown final donation! Watch out for those shaky tins. Thank you to everyone who has generously donated. Your support of our teams is greatly appreciated. If you wish to donation please visit https://kokodachallenge.com/donate-online and select Jim Stillman Cup for event and search for Loreto in the list of team names. The band will then play on the second Sunday Night of each month and will rehearse before each second Sunday Night Mass from about 4.15pm. The band will then play on the first night of July 12.
