Volume 31 - 13 October, 2015 Dear Parents & Students As we commence this fourth and final term of the year our attention turns towards “the finish”. We have now commenced the closing stages of yet another important year in the life of each. Let us be mindful then, of making the very best of what is yet still to be achieved and to ensure a strong and purposeful finish. We ask this most especially for our beautiful Year 12’s whose time as students at Loreto is almost complete. We pray that in this, their last term, they might remain confident and focused as they lead us, united together in truth and faith.

“Let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.” Hebrews 12:1

Photo taken at the Church of St Julian of Norwich, England. Julian lived her life as a recluse at this little Church, where this window has been created in her memory, giving her life to prayer. Her writings are of a God, gentle, kind and understanding; a God as a friend who is courteous and kind and who will keep us safe. Her simple saying, that "All shall be well" sums up very nicely her deep and unshakeable faith in God. Given that she lived in a time of great hardship (14th century: The Great Plague; the economic hardships following the Hundred Years War in Europe; the Peasants’ Revolt in Norwich; and the Great Western Schism.....all generating a heightened fear of death and fear of God) her faith seems even more remarkable! May we find inspiration in her words of faith and wisdom.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD

The International Day of the Girl Child was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2011. The UN declared 11 October as a day to “recognize girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world” (United Nations, 2011). The Day of the Girl has a broad range of concerns, including the inequalities girls face in the areas of education, legal rights, nutrition, medical care, protection from discrimination, violence, genital mutilation and child marriage. Helping girls reach their potential is one of the best investments we can make to help end poverty. As UN Secretary, Ban Ki Moon, declared in 2013, “empowering girls, ensuring their human rights and addressing the discrimination and violence they face are essential to progress for the whole human family.” #day of the girl www.mwia.org.au LIVED & WIRED – SUNDAY 3.00PM I warmly invite the whole Loreto Community and the wider Community of family, friends and neighbours to this year’s ever popular Live & Wired Festival being held this Sunday afternoon on the Loreto Deshon Oval. Come and spend a relaxing afternoon enjoying food, wine and the company of others, as you listen to the delightful sounds of our popular Loreto, Villa & Lauries Jazz, Soul & Rock bands. WELL DONE 

To our Year 10 students and their teachers on the success of their camping adventures last week. It was pleasing to hear that the camp went so well with the girls’ participation being both positive and co-operative. The students were a credit to themselves and the school because of their collective spirit and felicity. I offer sincere thanks to the staff involved for their generous support with particular thanks to Ms Ludwig for her many hours of organization, co-ordination and leadership.

To our Year 11 students on their whole-hearted commitment given during last week’s three day leadership program. I thank them for their vibrancy and felicity and look forward to the significant contribution they hope to make in 2016 as leaders of the school. Our prayers are with them now as they continue the important process of preparation for leadership selection this term. With special thanks to Mrs Meecham and the Year 11 team for their organization and leadership.

CONGRATULATIONS 

To Arabeth Ireland (Year 9) on her selection to participate in the Queensland State Championships (being held in Brisbane this week) for Synchronized Ice-Skating. We wish her and her team every success.

To Natalie Gjokmarkovic (Year 8) who was awarded a Credit in the ASTA Science Championships.

CONDOLENCES 

To Karli Bowra (Year 12) and her family on the recent passing of her Grandfather. May he rest peacefully in God’s loving care. Amen. Yours sincerely

Cheryl Hamilton Principal

Advice from Brisbane City Council regarding Parking As you are aware child safety and illegal parking around school zones remains a concern for parents, children, local residents and school alike, particularly during peak pick-up and drop-off times. Parking spaces during these times are at a premium and subsequently, competition for these spaces can lead to poor driver behaviour and potentially dangerous parking practices. Council is committed to providing education and awareness as well as a presence at schools to conduct enforcement of parking laws with a view to promoting safe parking and deterring dangerous parking practices. I would like to take this opportunity to ask that you encourage parents, guardians and visitors of your school to visit Council’s website at http://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/traffic-transport/parking-permits/parking-rules to learn more about parking legally in Brisbane. Over the next school term, Council Officers will be attending school zones to ensure safe parking practices. Parking fines may be issued in cases where illegal parking practices are observed. Thank you.

Purchase your tickets today Visit www.loreto.qld.edu.au/ payments/make-a-payment/ All proceeds directed to Loreto College’s priority needs, including capital works and the Scholarship Fund. Classroom Music Music Extension Congratulations to the nine Music Extension students who completed their final assessed recital performances last Thursday evening. The concert standard was extremely high – we are lucky to have such talented senior musicians at the College! Well done to Lily Devine, Lucy Nielson, Ainsley Carter, Sarah Nicholson, Emma Quinn, Rachelle Pinto, Ellen Stamatiou, Lucy Towner and Rachel Larkin. Paper Moon The cast of Paper Moon are in their final rehearsals and are set to perform for three nights to a full house! The renovation of Drama Studio 411 is complete with curtains, state of the art theatre lighting and new carpet. The stage and setting of the play is almost complete and all props and costumes are receiving final touches. The audience is reminded that pre-theatre drinks are available in room 401 each night from 6pm. Nibbles are complimentary and drinks are $5 for wine and $2.50 for soft drinks. Playwright, Victoria Carless, will join us in the audience on closing night. Lissa Gyte - Curriculum Leader Performing Arts

Science Department Another busy term begins in the Loreto Science Department. Our Year 7s are embarking on their Biology unit, the Year 8s will be learning all about energy, the Year 9s are exploring light and sound while the Year 10s are taking the first steps in designing their very own extended experimental investigation. The senior sciences are already busy. Topics being covered this term: Year 11 Biology: Disease and the human immune system Year 12 Biology: Evolution and Natural Selection Year 11 Chemistry: Gas Chemistry Year 12 Chemistry: Organic Chemistry Year 11 Physics: Light and Optics Year 12 Physics: Medical Physics As you can imagine, our six labs will be abuzz with all sorts of learning experiences and practical activities happening. Some exciting enrichment opportunities off-campus are approaching as well. On Friday, six Year 11 Physics students will be attending a University of Queensland Women in Engineering Breakfast at the Customs House in the City. The function features guest speaker and the Seymour White Visiting Scholar, Dr Marianne Foley. Dr Foley has recently been recognized as one of Australia’s top 100 most influential women and is PhD qualified as a Fire Safety Engineer. She is the only female on the Australasia Board for the multinational engineering firm Arup and is helping to shape and embed a work culture that encourages diversity. The function will be attended by members of South East Queensland school community, UQ staff and Seymour White industry representatives and will be a great opportunity for those girls to learn more about how women are excelling as leaders in what have previously been male dominated sectors of industry. As part of the Senior Chemistry Program, students in Year 11 will be visiting the QUT Chemworld Cube interactive exhibit at Gardens Point on Friday 30 October 2015 to conduct experiments and apply what they have been studying in Thermochemistry and Reaction Kinetics to fuel technologies and the design of rocket propulsion systems. The outing will also include a tour of the university’s applied chemistry laboratories and research areas. If you have any queries about studying the Sciences at Loreto or the enrichment opportunities available, please feel free to contact me at the College. Audition Day – Auditions for positions in all Loreto Ensembles for 2016 will be held on Sunday 25 October. A schedule of audition times will be published on the Music Noticeboard by Wednesday this week. It is the responsibility of all music students to check carefully for their audition timeslot(s) and then attend on the day at the correct time. Please be aware that some students will have more than one audition to attend. While we make every effort to place multiple auditions in conveniently separated timeslots, the scheduling process is complex, incorporating a multitude of factors and restrictions. If you have difficulties with your audition timeslot, please contact Mr Langford in the Music Office urgently. Set work for certain positions (eg. vocalists for selective groups, guitarists, percussionists) will be released this week and can be collected from the trays outside the Music Office. Ben Langford - Director of Music

Public Speaking This is a very exciting time for our Year 7, 8 and 9 Public Speaking students as they prepare for the ESU Competition which begins next Monday evening. Duffin Day On Friday 9 October, the girls in 9 Gold hosted the first ever ‘Duffin Day’. What is a Duffin, I hear you ask? A duffin is a cross between a donut and a muffin and tastes amazing! The Year 9 Cohort are holding five mini fundraising days in the hope of assisting ex-Student Aislinn Healy in her endeavour to support two young orphan boys in Tanzania. The girls from 9 Gold were up bright and early and met in the Home Economics room to make and dust the duffins before cleaning up their mess! The day was a huge success with the girls making over 100 duffins and raising $220. The highlight for me was seeing the girls work together as a team and to see the special bond the girls have with each other. A special thank you to Mr Swanson and Mrs Freeman for their organisation and support of this event. Kirsty Gore - Year 9 Coordinator

Burn Bright Day Last Friday 9 October the girls in Year 9 were fortunate tp spend the day with Sydney based company Burn Bright. The people from Burn Bright gave us advice on how to become a better friend and person. They did this by giving us words of wisdom, which taught us priceless lessons and we participated in fun and interactive activities that involved teamwork and confidence. We were able to establish new friendships with girls we do not often talk to. Overall this day was very enjoyable and taught us many valuable lessons about ourselves, our friends and our friendships. Lillie Pepper – Year 9

Sports Department Qld All Schools Touch Football Championships The Loreto Open team performed creditably as the standard of play was outstanding in our 18 years playing pool. The team won only one game but two of the losses were by only one touchdown. Valuable experience was gained in all facets of the game so this should be transferred to the Wednesday competition. I thank all players for their committed approach to all training and games. Additionally, I commend the Loreto students and parents who supported the team over the two days. Therese Begley - Coach Majestic Park Running All girls are welcome to join the running training sessions with Clare Geraghty on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 3.30pm to 4.45pm. The group meets in the MWC in PE uniform. Please bring a cap, water bottle and $5.00 for the session. Swim for Squad and Water Polo Fitness The squad training and fitness are conducted on Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning at Loreto pool from 6.30am to 8.00am. It is recommended that all water polo players try to attend one session for fitness. All Squad swimmers are welcome to attend. All girls must register their name at Sports office or with Mrs Wilkinson via email on wilkinsonj@loreto.qld.edu.au Meg Stevens - Director of Sport Water Polo Training at Loreto College - Term 4 If you are unable to attend training you must submit a note to Mrs Stevens explaining your absence.
