Volume 24 - 11 August, 2015 Dear Parents & Students Last Sunday’s Open Day was a vibrant and happy presentation of our Loreto community to prospective families as well as families whose daughters are already enrolled and who wish to extend their knowledge of life at Loreto. I would like to sincerely thank the many staff, parents and students who helped welcome these families and answer their questions about the opportunities a Loreto education can provide. As always, it is our students’ genuine love for their school and pride in being a Loreto girl that has the most powerful impact. Our facilities and grounds staff work enormous hours in the lead-up to Open Day ensuring that the school is looking its very best. The creativity and commitment of teaching staff is apparent in the displays and activities which give insight into teaching and learning at Loreto. Thank you also to the parents who were ready to answer questions and cooked the barbeque lunch. I congratulate our Communications and Enrolments Manager, Ms Emma Beach, her Assistant Mrs Angela Glancy and their team for their careful oversight of all aspects of the day; it was an enormous task and wonderfully executed. My last thanks are to Rebecca Marshall, a 2014 graduate, who spoke of her experience at Loreto. Rebecca’s academic and co-curricula achievements are outstanding and a fantastic example for parents who rightly wish to be assured that their daughters will be encouraged to achieve at the very highest level if they choose a Loreto education. Clearly, individual effort and family support are key to student achievement, however Rebecca also acknowledged the importance of the mentoring of her teachers as well as the sense of belonging and community involvement and the strong, supportive friendships she developed while at Loreto. She spoke of our emphasis on character and values and it is clear that the qualities of humility, gratitude and generosity underpin her achievements. Open Day always leaves me feeling positive and energized, and proud of the Loreto Coorparoo community. The ideals expressed in these extracts from the Loreto Schools of Australia Mission Statement are truly reflected in our school. Loreto education builds on Mary Ward’s desire to act out of “love not fear” and reflects the breadth of outlook and easy atmosphere associated with Mother Mary Gonzaga Barry. It encourages self-discipline and gives genuine responsibility to students, because risk and flexibility are more allied to this lively spirit of freedom than conformity and unthinking dependence. Allowing for the process of growth, this freedom includes the capacity to face and learn from the mistakes and failures that are a natural part of human experience. In the same spirit, the relationships in the school community will be marked by ideals of mutual respect, acceptance of difference and the presumption of good will. In such a context, students are helped to develop a sense of identity that is inwardly free and to become more capable of accepting responsibility for their lives and of courageous, compassionate and generous service. This is our vision: that Loreto schools offer o Catholic education which liberates, empowers and motivates students to use their individual gifts with confidence, creativity and generosity in loving and responsible service. National Self-Detection Program for Scoliosis Scoliosis (spinal curvature) is an important health problem for adolescent girls and 25 per thousand are at risk of developing a significant curve, with three girls per thousand requiring active treatment (spinal brace or surgery). In the early stages the condition is most often asymptomatic, so screening in the age range 11 - 13 years is a sound preventative health measure. When school screening for scoliosis was abandoned, the Self-Detection Program as a practical alternative was introduced. It is recommended that all girls in Years 7 and 9 participate in the NSDP Self-Detection Program. The brochure can be accessed directly via a link on the Scoliosis Australia home page at http://www.scoliosis-australia.org/scoliosis/about_scoliosis.html Helen Carty - Acting Principal
Year 12 Mother/Daughter Breakfast Sunday, 11 October from 9.-00am – 11.30am. Come and celebrate one last time and join in the festivities with all the mums of our Year 12 students. Year 7 Happenings Computer Hard Drives
Could Year 7 parents please check that their daughters are regularly backing up their computer files onto the external hard drive? It is important that this occurs regularly. If girls need to get a repair done on their computer they will be given a replacement computer. Replacement computers will not have a copy of their files. This will not matter if all files have been backed up onto the hard drive. I have encouraged the girls to back up every night when they finish their homework. Year 7 and Year 8 Personal Development Last Thursday Brainstrom Productions presented “The Hurting Game” for Years 7 and 8. The show was about peer pressure and being “true to yourself”. It was an entertaining way to promote discussion about friendship, peer pressure, bullying, body image, our cyber footprint and the way we interact at school and on digital media. The show certainly assisted our girls to recognise and resist peer pressure and help create a more positive school environment. Follow up activities have occurred in homeroom groups during Personal Development. Ask your daughter what she thought of this show and the follow up discussions. Anna Nielson - Year 7 Coordinator
Performing Arts This year students of the Performing Arts have attended a variety of excursions to view live theatre at QPAC and Queensland Theatre Company. On Thursday, 20 August at 10am all Year 10 Drama students will see a production of Dracula at the Cremorne Theatre. This Shake and Stir production is in the Gothic style and compliments our current semester work. The girls will analyse this production and write an analytical essay for their written assessment. During the holidays on Saturday, 2 October at 7.30pm, Year 11 and 12 Music students will attend a performance of the musical, Into The Woods, by Harvest Rain Theatre Company. Regular exposure to musical theatre of this calibre is considered a valuable extension to each girl’s music education at Loreto. As this excursion is during the school holidays, it is important that parents contact the school urgently if their daughter will be away and unable to attend. English News The Mayne Inheritance Tour: Kangaroo Point, Brisbane CBD & University of Queensland Classes B and D Walking along the windy brown river all huddled under umbrellas, we took time to observe significant statues that you would often walk past without noticing. It was cold, gloomy and drizzling rain all day, the walkways were quiet and lonely, but we were able to appreciate small parts of Brisbane’s history that still remain. As a group, we walked into the city, where we visited the Brisbane Arcade, another small piece of Brisbane’s history. Lastly, our feet were rested as we caught a bus to UQ where we visited the James and Mary Emelia Mayne art centre. Nikita Daley Drip, drip. I felt the droplets land on the top of my head, coalescing into rivulets before plummeting to the pavement below. It was lovely to be outside- raining, of course, but not so thick that I couldn't see the sky and world through the haze. Towards my right, in a break between the jacarandas, I saw the top of the Story Bridge rising through the fog, the angled metal arches like the peaks of a mountain standing above the clouds. The streets of Brisbane were packed today. Cars lined both sides of the road and I felt people brush against me from all sides as I was caught in the bustle of moving colour. My head brushed against the dripping leaves of a tree overhanging the footpath, splattering droplets down on me and my fellow city-goers. Ahead of me, at the end of the road, was the entrance to a tunnel that passed under the bridge. Just seeing that dark hole sent a shudder down me. I’d always hated the underground. I was meant to be out in the open, under the sky and rain, with the wind blowing against my face. Just before I stepped into the cool, stuffy darkness, I caught one last envious glimpse of the bridge, rising above the fog, the river gushing and swelling beneath it, skyscrapers stretching out around it and the sky, endless above it. Suddenly, I felt myself falling, and then my head was banged against the wall. One, two, three. Tap, tap, tap. Through my dizzying vision, I saw those around me jumping, or maybe they were shaking, water flicking off in all directions. Then I was plunged into darkness. I guess people didn’t need their umbrellas in the tunnel. Tayla Jansen 24 Rain falling then returning in sheets as the smell of salt is carried by the wind. It accompanies the squelch of dress shoes in puddles formed by the cracks in the path. The cliff face watches over proudly displaying the scars from early quarrying for the construction of the greater city of Brisbane. Barely visible through constant drizzle was the CBD. The buildings peak over the clouds and emerge from the bustling city centre, monuments to the changing times. In contrast, the iron giant of the Story Bridge, which connects the two sides of Brisbane, stands as a tribute to the city’s perseverance and survival. The park lies empty and the cliff unchallenged as the rain continues to pour. The Loreto girls struggle on through the wet conditions to discover more in their home city of Brisbane. Rebecca Smith The raindrops shattered on the streets of Brisbane creating thin and complex rivers of water under my black rubber shoes. The smell of rain, the scent of grass and the cloak of humidity on my arms created a feeling of perpetual calm. Closing my eyes, I could hear the wind whispering secrets in reply to the soft murmurs of the river. My steps faltered as I crossed paths with a gothic structured gate the colour of ebony. The gate had no purpose, as it opened up only to crushing waves and jagged rocks. A heavy thick chain and lock steeled the gate closed. The ancient structure seemed to lean forward and watch as everyone walked past, as if curiosity got the better of it. Its peaks were sharp and diamond shaped, resembling the thorns of a rose. My fingertips brushed along the surface of the cold metal while my mind wondered what secrets this structure kept hidden under its lock and chain. Adrian Urbina A sweet fog invades the small streets, blessed by a dull sky. A city, whose momentary beauty is now tarnished by the merciless attack of a simple shower, is moggy and grim. The cliffs are devolved in a harsh silence, whilst the mild taps of water onto the brown river echo. Amidst this sombre bank, Queensland homes brimming with tales of family are ostracized by the new world which awaits. Little history lingers in the air, the struggles and successes and innocence, all slowly wither in the face of the inevitable future. The seldom reality playing out in front on my eyes as I witness the pure paradise that once existed begin to fade into a memory. Kittty Lloyd The squeak of polished floors against our muddy rubber shoes announce our arrival into the Brisbane Arcade. The hidden, tucked away passage in the middle of bustling Queen Street, serves as an opulent reminder that shopping was once a quiet, relaxing experience of perusing the carefully presented items for sale in a glass window, rather than the mad dash and hurried choices that shopping offers today. Glass windows line the narrow corridor, offering teapots and jewellery, dresses and shoes, high fashion and a large assortment of coloured sweets. The decadence of years past has not altogether disappeared.

However it is slightly blurred against the bright lights and thumping music beats echoing from other, seemingly more enticing and contemporary stores that line the street. But no one can deny the appealing allure of old, upper-class luxury, and the surprising element of self-indulgence that arrives with stepping back into a time when Brisbane was young and the Arcade was polished and glistening. Taylor Whitewood The movement of cars overhead creates an eerie thunder, the drone wiping the world from existence. Then and there, you could be at any point in the bridge’s history. Grey on grey, looking up at the underbelly of the overarching beast, a refuge against the drizzle of rain. The river, unsettled and restless, slips past silently, like a cat in the night. The monotonous colour of the world at this point in time is all consuming. The cold is isolating. Cantilevers glisten overhead. This could be any of the 27,410 of the past days. There is no time here, no aging, no encroaching media, no people, no society. Simply the sky, the bridge, and the rain. Mikaela Keyser I watched as the water lapped at the bank of Kangaroo Point, as if it was thirsty for more. Threatening to engulf the land in its depths. And it had, not so many years ago. Fresh in the minds of many were the devastating floods of 2011. The wide body of water to my right was not the only reminder of this. Up ahead we saw a shed with the height the floods had reached. There was something haunting about how the path we walked had been swallowed by the river not that long ago and will be again when history is due to repeat itself. Anna King The clouded, murky water of the Brisbane River meandered through the dockside. Dark skies clouded over. Small crystal droplets pelted the pathway, battered the houses and added to the swift current of the river. The current flowed as fast as the streaming rain, the brown water inundating and engulfing the rocks surrounding the edge of the river, painting them a similar brown colour. Boats docked in the harbor; their great white sails gently swayed in the slight wind gust. The fresh evergreen grass glowed green, framing the historical statues in and around the river and dockside. Georgia Paroz Beyond the land once inherited, the brown river slugged by carelessly. A new world, engrossed with the history of our ancestors. Cans and broken bottles protruded from the water. The boats from the wharf preparing to take on their next expedition, sailed inland. The smell of Brisbane's history washed ashore onto this forgotten land. The land of a now eager and sweaty city. Devoted to trying new things. Every street led back down to the river of our forgotten past Daniela Lazaretti

Geography News
When a Girl Comes to Town – Geography Goes to Boonah Last Tuesday, as part of the unit on Places and Liveability, the Year 10 Geography classes trekked out to Boonah to investigate whether a “tree change” to a smaller rural community could be a viable move for them and their families. We were blessed with a fine day and the students were able to gather ample primary evidence in the field. The students were very fortunate to be spoken to by the Mayor of the Scenic Rim, Mr John Brent and his Council’s Manager for Community and Culture, Genevieve Windley, who gave an excellent presentation on the virtues of living in the Scenic Rim region. Our students were also able to gain an insight into being teenagers in the area when Patrice Lorimer and Emily Lowe of 10 Red interviewed two of Boonah State High School’s student leaders, Michael and Yana, who answered the girl’s questions most admirably and were outstanding ambassadors for both their school and the local community. A guided tour around the outskirts of the Boonah district by former Loreto teacher Mr Bill Kenny and his wife Barbara, who are both local in the area, was also of great value in the collection of data. Their tour gave many wonderful insights into the key features of the area that would have otherwise gone un-noticed by the students. All in all it was a very successful and productive day and I would like to thank our Year 10 Geography teachers for preparing the students in the lead up to the field trip. Finally, I would also like to thank all of our guests for helping us out on the day as well as two of our parents, Mrs Rae Finn (Bronte 10 R) and Mrs Kay Gleeson (Anna 10 R), who came along on the day and gained an insight into what our students are currently studying. Music News Catholic Colleges Music Festival – Good luck to all the students in Loreto Ensembles who are performing at QCMF this weekend. I know you have been working very hard. Dr Svoboda and I will be trying to get to see as many groups as possible over the weekend and we are very much looking forward to hearing you all play! Parents – don’t forget that you can find out everything you need to know about QCMF at their website: http://www.qcmf.com.au/wp-content/uploads/QCMF-Information-Brochure-2015.pdf . Most importantly, you should be aware that:
QCMF is run over 4 days and 7 different venues, including St James Hall and Church, one block from the College (about a 10 min walk).
QCMF does not make a profit but to help cover costs of hiring professional equipment and adjudicators, audience members are asked to purchase a ticket ($5 for an all venue single day pass, $10 for an all venue four day pass)
Parking is difficult as only street parking is available. Please allow plenty of time to find a park and get inside the venue or you may miss your daughter’s performance.
It should be obvious that audience members entering or leaving a venue while a group is trying to perform their best can be highly disruptive. Therefore volunteers at the door WILL NOT LET YOU IN at any time while a group is playing. Please allow yourself enough time to enter the venue one group prior to your daughter’s performance so that you are not disappointed.
A large variety of well-priced food and drink options are available at each venue, particularly Villanova College itself.
Important Transport Arrangements (Concert Band Two, Flute Ensemble Two, Clarinet Ensemble Two, Saxophone Ensemble) – Due to these performance being scheduled directly after school, or even during the school day, we have organised some special transport arrangements. *Members of Concert Band Two should meet Mrs Baldwin in the MWC Mezzanine directly after home room on Thursday. The College will provide a coach to transport all students to Villanova for their performance. Parents will be expected to collect their daughters either after their performance at 5pm or at the end of the section by 7:15 pm.

*Students in both Clarinet Ensemble Two and Flute Ensemble Two will be expected to go straight to Villanova College on Friday morning (meeting by 7:55 am and 8:25 am respectively). You will need to take your laptops and schoolbags with you, as well as all performance needs (music, instruments). We have organised a bus to bring these ensembles back to school at the end of the performances. *Students in Saxophone Ensemble need to come to school as normal on Friday, with all their performance equipment. The College will organise bus transport to and from Villanova for their QCMF Performance. Girls should meet Mr Langford and Mrs Baldwin at Room 711 at 9:15 am, with their morning tea. We will be able to leave laptops and books in 711 while we are away from school. Rehearsal Changes this week (Senior Choir, Guitar Ensemble One, Big Band) – All students and parents should be aware from previous newsletters that today’s Tuesday 11 August Senior Choir rehearsal will finish at the slightly later time of 5:30 pm. We ask parents to support this change as, due to recent missed rehearsals the group’s members need this time to feel properly prepared for their upcoming Festival performance. Due to the timing of QCMF performances, regular rehearsals for Guitar Ensemble One (Friday morning) and Big Band (Friday afternoon) have been cancelled this week. Big Band will have a quick run through at lunch on Thursday instead. Primary Music Camp – It is now time for members of Concert Band One, Guitar Ensemble One, Senior Choir, Chamber Strings and String Ensemble to email Mr Langford with your availability for the Primary Music Camp on Sunday 23 August. On the day students play with and tutor 2 concert bands, 1-2 string ensembles, a guitar ensemble and a choir, before hosting a concert for these groups. Individuals don’t need to come in all day, but we expect the majority of students to make themselves either for the morning session (8am to 12pm) or the afternoon session (12pm to 4pm). We are particularly after students in years 9-11 as you will still be at the school when many of the primary students begin attending here in the future. They love to see a friendly face when they start as nervous Year 7s! The Primary Music Camp is an important and inspiring service our girls provide for the younger students, who frequently return to the camp year after year. The event is extremely well attended by more than 80 students from upwards of 20 different schools, so we need plenty of helpers. Open Day Thanks – We would like to offer a massive thank you to all those girls who assisted with music events on Open Day this past weekend. There were too many people involved to name individuals but we had guitarists busking at the Tasting Garden, Loreto Music Festival Finalists performing in the MWC Foyer, Year 10 students assisting with a classroom display, Guitar Ensemble One running an open rehearsal on stage, and Exit Stage Left both running an open rehearsal and performing to official start the event! At a very busy time of year, your contributions are very much appreciated and really show that Loreto school spirit is alive and well amongst Loreto musicians. Music Support Group – The next meeting for the Parent’s Music Support Group is next Wednesday 19 August. All parents are invited to attend. At this meeting we will be finalising organisation for the Primary Music Camp and our major fundraiser at the end of the year – the Mega Raffle. Ben Langford - Director of Music DAY

Congratulations to the 8C Volleyball Team who were premiers in the Junior D competition defeating All Hallows’ in the Grand Final! This was a fabulous effort, the team had no reserves for the final as four players were away sick. The 7A Volleyball Team were narrowly defeated in their Grand Final against St Rita’s. The girls won the second set convincingly after losing the first but couldn’t peg back a quick start to the third set by St Rita’s. Congratulations on finishing Runners Up girls! Our season ended on a great note with a tight match and good quality hockey being played. Despite having a bye, the Open Team came out on the bus with the Juniors to support them for their last game. There was a thunderous blizzard of lollies and pom-poms on the side-line as the younger team did battle on the pitch. The Junior girls certainly lifted in response and played out of their skins. Both the Junior and Open teams represented Loreto admirably all trimester, showing great skill, tenacity and most importantly teamwork. A big thank you to our coaches, Ellen Carey and Sue Reid who worked hard with the girls and did a great job balancing skill work, fitness drills and fun at training sessions. I am particularly proud of the dedication and commitment both teams displayed every week with fantastic attendance rates at training and for matches despite it being a very busy time of the school year. Well done girls and thank you for a great season of hockey. Matt Lourigan - Hockey Coordinator

Senior Schools Cup Volleyball
The Loreto Open A Volleyball team competed in the Queensland Volleyball Schools Cup in Open Girls Division 2 over the weekend in Toowoomba. The girls were very competitive and played many close matches ultimately finishing a creditable 7 th place out of 18 teams. They showed great spirit and determination, particularly given that only 7 players were available for all of the matches over the weekend. Many thanks to Mrs Gore for all of her pre-tournament organisation and for staying on Friday night and also to Mrs Logan who assumed the manger duties on Saturday through to Sunday. For the six Year 12 players in the team, this was their last game representing Loreto in Volleyball and I would like to thank them for the positive manner in which they have always represented the College. Thanks also to the many parents who made the trek up the range to support the team, the girls really appreciated it and thanks also to Mia Page (Volleyball Captain 2014) for accompanying the team and doing our refereeing duties. Members of the team are Georgia Johnson, Kate Hutchins, Gabryela Sellars, Julia Logan, Megan Laycock, Kate O’Sullivan, Fances Wong and Tiaan Smith. Mr Gavin Swanson - Coach
CaSSSA Athletics - 2015 Loreto College will be taking up to 105 athletes to compete in the Catholic Secondary School Girls Sport competition on Monday 24 August. The athletes will catch a bus at 6.30am to QEII on the day of the carnival. A letter will be distributed to the Athletics Team including program details next week. P&F Parent Forum The P&F invites feedback from the community, and to help this we have prepared a very short P&F Survey (1 -2mins) for you to complete. https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/JFWJP93 The survey will be open until midnight on Tuesday 25 August, and respondents will go into the draw to win one of three $100 tuckshop vouchers to add to your flexi -schools account. Jump onto the link now and share your thoughts, it only takes a minute. Your valuable survey feedback will be shared at our upcoming 2015 Parent Forum event to be held at 6.30pm on Wednesday 26 August in Cruci (Ground Floor). This evening will be a relaxed event where parents and friends can discuss the direction of our P&F Committee over wine and cheese, hear about the actions that have been undertaken since the 2014 Parent Forum, hear about the Stage 2 timeframes of the continued Master-planning process, and help us understand what information parents would like to see from a homework workshop that is being planned. The Acting Principal, Helen Carty will be joining us, along with all the friendly faces of the P&F Committee. The busy timetable of P&F activities continues with a Mothers’ Retreat on the weekend of 29 and 30 August, Father’s Day breakfast on Friday 4 September, and an afternoon tea for parents on a date to be fixed in Term 4. This is the last meeting before a new committee is elected at the annual general meeting on Tuesday 1 September. P&F AGM We invite nominations for the P&F Executive as we approach our AGM on Tuesday evening 1 September at 7.00pm. If you are interested in contributing your time and ideas to our P&F for 2016, we would love to hear from you. Calling for Volunteers to assist with P&F Father’s Day Breakfast Breakfast will be cooked by the facilities team John and Mark beginning at 6.00am, however we would be most grateful for six or seven volunteers to assist in the preparation of the fruit platters and serving food. Volunteers would need to be at the Mary Ward Centre kitchen from 6.00 / 6.15am. This simply involves cutting up the fruit and helping to serve breakfast on the morning. Any offers of help would be appreciated. Thank you. If you can help please email Trish Willing: willingp@loreto.qld.edu.au Father’s Day Raffle One lucky Dad will win four 12 month passes to Village Roadshow theme parks, including Warner Bros Movie World, Sea World and Wet’n’Wild Water World, kindly donated by State Member for Greenslopes Joe Kelly MP. The passes will be raffled at the breakfast with tickets costing $5 per family, of which $2 will be donated by the P&F to a worthy charity. The winner will be announced on the day. Fundraising Dinner Reminder - Room to Read Projects in Nepal Loreto has supported Room to Read’s fundraising dinners in the Mary Ward Centre because of their shared purpose – the transformational impact of education. This year, the dinner will fundraise to rebuild its projects in earthquake-ravaged Nepal. Nepal is very special to Room to Read. Way back in 1998, John Wood, on a trekking holiday from his Microsoft job visited a school that had NO books! They said "Come back. Bring books". And he did! He then started the organisation, Room to Read. Since then, Room to Read has built 3776 libraries and 1101 schools in Nepal, and published 269 titles in Nepalese. It's important to rebuild these schools and libraries as quickly as possible because getting kids back to school creates normalcy in their lives. You may like to check out Room to Read and donate: www.roomtoread.org Please support this very worthy cause. See attached flyer to book your table for a scrumptious dinner and night out. Thanks.

For 55 years Palms Australia has assisted such communities to recruit, prepare and support Australian who volunteer to share their lives and skills. We have increasing numbers of requests from communities who believe this approach, more than anything else, assists their self-reliance and sustainable development. Want to know more? Dinner to make a Difference Fundraising Dinner to Repair Schools in Nepal
Saturday 19 September 2015 6.30pm
Trekking was central to the formation of Room to Read. In 1998, Microsoft executive John Wood, on a trek in Nepal met a teacher who invited him to a school. John was confronted with the harsh reality of education in rural Nepal. The headmaster spoke the nine words that would forever change John’s life: “Perhaps, Sir, you will someday come back with books.” John returned to Nepal the following year, with a train of 8 donkeys bearing 37 boxes of books. What started as one man’s efforts to provide books to a rural community is now Room to Read, a global organisation transforming the lives of millions of children in ten countries in the developing world, by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education.
