Volume 35 - 10 November 2015 Dear Parents and Students Creator God, we pray for our school. Enable those who lead to be agents of your goodness. Empower them to be your servants, leading as you would, in justice and charity. May you bless us and keep us in the palm of your hand. We ask this prayer in the name of your Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
At yesterday’s assembly we held a small but important ceremony in which the Year 12 Leaders formally handed over their leadership responsibilities to the Year 11’s for 2016. At this point in time we stop to offer our thanks and appreciation to the Year 12’s for their generous and committed service given as Leaders this year. They have led us well, with diligence and pride, in this year of Verity. We wish them every success and blessing for the years ahead.

English News Guest Speaker 11C English 11C are studying the David Williamson play, Top Silk. We felt privileged to have a visit from Barrister-at-Law, Mr John Farren, during our class on Wednesday. Mr Farren spoke engagingly about his profession, providing valuable contextual material for the drama. He also candidly explained his own circuitous journey to his role as a barrister, and in doing so revealed that the most direct path to a career destination might not always be the most interesting one. Mrs Bronwyn Platz - Teacher
Big Sister / Little Sister Farewell On Tuesday October 27, the Year 12 ‘big sisters’ were farewelled by their Year 7and 8 ‘little sisters’. The girls joined in a handprint art activity that the Year 12 sisters were given as a keepsake. We then watched two short video farewells from the little sisters. This Big Sister/Little Sister initiative works very well to build community amongst the students. We send our best wishes with the Seniors of 2015 as they leave Loreto. Year 11 Geography Investigating strategies to feed the world…. Integral to their inquiry into the current global issue of food security, the Year 11 Geography classes have been investigating the sustainability of various strategies that will ensure there is enough food for future generations. Part of this involved a recent visit to the Northey Street City Farm at Bowen Hills where one of the strategies, Permaculture, forms the basis of the community farm. Both classes were taken on a tour of the farm to see Permaculture principles and design in practice and were involved in a seed planting exercise. The visit proved to be a great success with students now armed with ample ideas of how to apply this very interesting concept across various scales which will be useful to their next assessment task. Diane Hanson - Curriculum Leader - Geography
Music News Congratulations – To all those girls (and boys) who auditioned last week for the 2016 Loreto / Villanova Musical “Guys & Dolls”! Staff have made some very difficult decisions and selected a final cast, who were informed by email on Monday morning and should have collected their contracts by now. Don’t forget to attend this Thursday’s script read through – it will give you a great idea of what Guys and Dolls is all about, we will play you some of the songs – we may even ask the leads to sing some of them for you! Senior Choir and Liturgy Musicians – Don’t forget that we have two more rehearsals to prepare for the Graduation Mass on TODAY - Tuesday 10 November (3:30pm to 5pm) - and during school time on Wednesday 18 November (1pm to 3pm). The Graduation Mass itself will require students to arrive by 6:45pm on Thursday 19 November. You are be able to leave directly after the mass – no need to stay for the Graduation Ceremony which follows. Music Camp Invites – Parents of continuing students in Concert Band One, Chamber Strings, Guitar Ensemble One, Senior Choir and invited members of String Ensemble will this week receive an email from the Music Department with an invite to attend the 2016 Music Camp. Please be aware that the timeline for completing the Online Application will be fairly tight – due Monday next week 23 November. Places on this camp always fill up very quickly so please submit your applications promptly. Private Tuition 2016 – If you intend for your daughter to take Private Music Tuition at the school in 2016 (whether that be individual or shared lessons; vocal, instrumental or theory tuition) and have not yet filled out the online enrolment form, please do this urgently by following this link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1RGnFa9RFBf9hGNK0_pxZkZ8t_2FzVmEi0pi66ZB0T9Q/ viewform The Online Form was due for completion by last Friday 6 November. Please be aware that, the Loreto tuition fees follow the rates set by the Music Teacher Association of Queensland, who have recommended a slight increase for next year from the current $32.50/half hour to $34.00/half hour lesson. Loreto Fees will increase by this small figure as of Term One 2016. Music Support Group - Will hold their final meeting for the year this Wednesday 11 November (tomorrow). If you haven’t been able to make meetings this year, then this last one would be the perfect chance to come along, introduce yourself, and find out what is going on as we will be planning some dates for next year and saying farewell to some “graduating” parents. Ben Langford - Director of Music
Public Speaking On 2 November, three of our students from Years 7 and 8 entered the Junior (ESU) English Speaking Union Final. They were Rachael Hegerty, Fiona O'Sullivan and Sofia Gray. It was an exciting evening with stimulating speeches. Well done to all three! Congratulations to Rachael in Year 7 who came second and will be presented with her award by the Queensland Governor on December 2! The Intermediate ESU Final was last night, November 9. Representing Loreto was Mikayla Staples from Year 8. Mikayla made us proud as she was up against all Year 10 boys. This ends the Public Speaking for 2015. Year 11 students who have shown interest in Lions Youth of the Year 2016 will be notified of meetings via the daily notices this week. Rosemary O’Neill - Public Speaking Coordinator

Performing Arts Congratulations to the following students from Loreto College and Villanova College who have been selected in the cast and orchestra of Guys and Dolls. Involvement Forms, including a participation contract and information regarding costumes, will be distributed this week. Our full cast and orchestra reading will occur this Thursday afternoon from 3.30pm on the MWC stage, Loreto College. It takes a great deal of courage to audition for a school musical and I sincerely thank everyone who prepared an audition for our panel. Preparation for this musical has been underway behind the scenes for a couple of months. Our set design is complete, our set construction is being finalised and the art work has begun. Costuming a cast this large is a challenge and I thank parents for their assistance in advance. We have an extremely talented cast, orchestra and Production Team and we can’t wait to start working on this production together. Finally, I would like to thank the coaches for their dedication, commitment and the knowledge they have given to all players throughout the season. We say a big thank you to Jacqui Gold (Open A), Kristina Sams (Open B), Sylvester Iwinski (Intermediate A), Isabelle Mowen (Intermediate B), Madeleine Dinnen (Intermediate C), Taili Beausang (JuniorA) and Mia Page (Junior B). I would also like to thank all the players for their commitment to basketball this season and for the excellent manner in which they have represented Loreto during the eight weeks of competitive basketball. We have increased the number of competing teams to seven this year, our largest and the results in the Intermediate division are most pleasing.. The season would also not have been as successful without the help of Mrs Angela Waite and Miss Nadia Conradi who have helped with home matches and supported me in the overall running of the season. P&F News Calling for Year Level Representatives for 2016 Next year might seem like a long way off but we need to plan now for the start of the 2016 school year. To ensure we hit the ground running in the first term we are looking for parents to volunteer now as year level representatives. The job involves organising social events for parents, which may be held at the school, your home or an external venue like a restaurant, cafe or bar. If you are holding an event at a private home, we will provide you with a copy of the GUIDELINES FOR HOLDING FUNCTIONS AT PRIVATE RESIDENCES. Promoting your events is as simple as placing an advertisement in the weekly Loreto newsletter. You can put together your own advert or we can help you. If you are interested in becoming a year level representative, please complete the attached form below or contact Trish Willing via email: willingp@loreto.qld.edu.au Garry West - P&F President
