EAST BELFAST PUBLIC WANT TO GO THE ‘MARSHWIGGLE WAY’ THE R E SULT S AR E IN / GR EENWAY

Earlier this year the Eastside Partnership, in association with Belfast City Council, launched a campaign to name three bridges and a major new pathway as part of the Connswater Community Greenway. The public put forward suggestions and a panel of judges selected the top two under each category which went out to public vote last month.

T

he names relate to three bridges in Greenville Park and Orangefield Park, and the new greenway pathway that extends from Orangefield Park to Braniel. The public have been voting for their favourites and the winning names can now be revealed as Collyard’s Bridge, receiving 62% of the vote; Avalon Bridge with 70%, Kingfisher 50.5%; and Marshwiggle Way for the new pathway with 68% of the vote. The final selections were approved by Belfast City Council’s Parks and Leisure Committee, subject to ratification at the next full council meeting. Here are explanations of the winning names: Collyard’s Bridge Collyard’s was the name given locally to the Orchard and the house that once existed in the grounds of Orangefield Park. Avalon Bridge This word has links to east Belfast’s Van Morrison who has an album called ‘Avalon Sunset’ which includes the track Orangefield, written about this particular area.Van

Morrison grew up in this part of the City. Kingfisher Bridge Kingfishers are one of the fantastic species of birds that live on the banks of the Knock River in Orangefield Park. Kingfishers are small unmistakable bright blue and orange birds. They fly low over water and hunt fish from riverside perches, occasionally hovering above the water’s surface. Marshwiggle Way Marshwiggle are a race that inhabits the marshes of northern Narnia, south of the River Shribble from The Chronicles of Narnia books written by east Belfast man C.S. Lewis. Puddleglum is the well-known Marshwiggle who is a lead character in The Silver Chair. His great strength is that even though he doesn’t always see how good can come of a situation he nevertheless will stay at his post, will do what needs to be done and in the Silver Chair his act of selfless heroism saves the whole enterprise. BELFAST ACTIVITY CENTRE HOSTS LAUNCH OF 'THE DARK EXPERIENCE' AN ELIGHTENING EXPERIENCE ALTER N AT I VE T E AM BU I LD I N G AT T R A C T I O N ‘ T H E DAR K E X P E R I E N CE ’ L AUN C H ED BY LE AD I NG SI G H T LO S S CH AR I T Y R N I B The Royal National Institute of Blind People in Northern Ireland (RNIB NI) has launched its first social enterprise venture - ‘The Dark Experience’ - at Belfast Activity Centre. This unique workshop, designed by RNIB in consultation with local people who are blind or partially sighted, gives those with sight a powerful experience of what it’s like to live without their vision.

O

ur sense of sight provides around 80% of the information we receive about the world. At the special preview launch on Thursday, influential managers from top commercial companies and public organisations were blindfolded, and sent on a specially designed journey with only a long cane to help them navigate. Relying on their other senses and the support of others, they experienced the nonstop problem solving that people with sight loss undertake every day as they tried to safely avoid on street obstacles, select the right money to pay for something in our makeshift shop, and complete everyday tasks at home and in the workplace. When asked about their experience, Brendan Morrison, local manager at Halifax said, “It sounds ironic, but this is a really eye opening experience! As a company we’ve already had colleagues take part in The Dark Experience from our Belfast Gasworks site and the benefits for teambuilding really stood out then and again today. In any workplace, you have people of differing strengths and weaknesses but in this type of environment, you’re all the same, relying on the people around you to get through the challenges that the Dark Experience definitely present. We hope to give more colleagues the opportunity to share the experience in the near future.” RNIB NI are inviting local companies to ‘Try it WWW

blindfolded’ and experience everyday life through the eyes of someone with sight loss whilst increasing their team working skills at this unique workshop, kindly hosted by Belfast Activity Centre at their Adventure Learning Park. Barry Macaulay, Senior Manager RNIB NI said, “Any organisation based on teamwork - whether it’s in the public, private or voluntary sector - can benefit from The Dark Experience. Organisations working with the sight loss community will deepen their understanding of the people who use their services, and generally, this experiential workshop will help any group of people working together, especially in difficult circumstances when good communication is even more important. RNIB research shows that 72% of people with sight loss of working age are currently not in employment. As a social enterprise, we aim to get enough bookings to enable us to employ full time blind or partially sighted trainers to facilitate the experience.” The Dark Experience standard workshop lasts a full day and consists of three key elements: The Dark Experience itself, Dine in the Dark, and Understanding Sight Loss - practical ways that your organisationcan support people with sight loss. Sessions are co-delivered by a local person with sight loss who can share their personal experiences. Workshop content can be tailored to meet an organisation’s specific needs.

undreds of adrenaline junkies of all ages, heights and sizes descended upon Foymore Lodge in Portadown for the biannual McVitie’s Jaffa Cakes Mud Madness recently. Over two days, fun lovers from across Ireland, the UK and further afield came to run through fields, climb over fences and crawl through tunnels in the name of charity and checking off those all-important bucket lists. Raising vital funds for palliative care charity Marie Curie, Mud Madness continues to prove itself as one of Ireland’s most popular and successful off-road obstacle courses, having raised more than £150,000 for the charity’s vital work over the last ten years. After a hugely successful inaugural event last September, Mini Mud Madness returned on Saturday to offer 6 – 16 year olds the chance

to get as mucky as they’re never allowed to at home! Then Sunday saw the main event for grown up kids take place with die-hard teams, groups and individuals pit themselves against the many obstacles along the 4.5km course. The challenge has become one of the most popular and talked-about annual adventure experiences here, and 2016 welcomed Jaffaman, the event’s new mascot, who joined the fun over the weekend following a tour of Northern Ireland to raise awareness of the McVitie’s Jaffa Cakes Mud Madness and the partnership with Marie Curie. Peter Davidson of Sydenham, ran the whole 4.5km without a shirt on! He became quite the celebrity by the time he was finished! Well done to Peter and all involved.

ADDING VALUE AT THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY SUPP ORT F OR N E W N E I G HB O U R S New-comers to the lower Ravenhill can access valuable language and advice services to support them as they make the adjustment to life in the area. hrough funding from the Housing Executive, the Lagan Village Youth Centre is able to offer vital English language classes and a weekly advice service. The language classes help participants learn ‘Easy English, My Way’ and a variety of nationalities, including Roma, Polish and Hungarian, have been able to avail of classes. The nearby Nettlefield Primary School has also helped promote the classes amongst the children and their parents. Class teacher, Gareth Montgomery, said: “Those who attend our class learn basic grammar, reading, writing, listening and speaking skills all of which helps them access vital services. When they have gained the confidence participants can go on to develop their English through a more traditional exam based language class at a local college.” For two hours each week a room is set aside where, for the past two

years, an advice worker has helped various nationalities settle further into Belfast. The advice service is open every Friday for two hours and offers a vital link to services. It helps with registering for a GP negotiate benefit entitlement and look to the various paths to gain employment. Csilla Borbely, who is the advice worker, said: “The advice service can help with a diverse range of challenges from the complicated to the simple and can include landlord issues, seeking schools, finding out about after school opportunities for children, moving house and dealing with utilities. Solving the issues can be of great help in settling a family into the area.” George Newell, of Lagan Village Youth and Community Group, said: “Both of these services are helping tackle communication barriers from developing basic language skills through to dealing with local authorities we have the opportunity to help. We are seeing a

knock on effect as people come into the centre they then find out what other opportunities we have, including the parent and toddler group and sewing classes. It has opened up many avenues for people to the area and helped them feel part of the Lower Ravenhill. I’d like to thank the Housing Executive for their support of our work. ” The Housing Executive’s remit goes beyond bricks and mortar and this is a further example of how it supports local communities. The Housing Executive’s Area Manager, Gary Ballantyne, commented: “We were pleased to support these initiatives by Lagan Village Youth and Community group through our Community Cohesion funding. They are contributing positively to community relations and creating opportunities for greater interaction between different groups with diverse cultures. I commend all who are involved.”

EAST BELFAST TEAM TACKLE GRAND CANYON FOR ACTION CANCER Four keen trekkers from East Belfast set off on an adventure of a lifetime on Saturday 16th April 2016 on an 8 day trek through the Grand Canyon. They have worked tirelessly over the past 6 months to raise over £14,000 for Northern Irelands leading local cancer charity, Action Cancer. Leah White, Stuart Graham, Audrey Haggan and Terry Lawler joined up with 12 other participants to take part in the challenge which saw them walk for up to 16km a day in intense Nevada heat. They camped each night in the Grand Canyon and integrated with the Havasupai Tribe that live in the Grand Canyon. The money raised will be used to fund for Action Cancer’s range of early detection and support services for those suffering from cancer in Northern Ireland and their families. These services include a unique breast screening programme for women aged between 40 – 49 and over 70, MOT health checks for men and women across the country, counselling, health promotion, and complementary therapy. The Group of 15 participants have raised a grand total of £52,245 for Action Cancer. The charity have a number of places on overseas treks to destinations such as Iceland, Cuba, China and Kilimanjaro.

Anne McMurray, Connswater Community Greenway Trust said:”The Naming Panel had a really tough decision in shortlisting the suggested names and deciding which were appropriate and relevant to the various sites. We were overwhelmed by the volume of interest in this campaign from the public. We would like to thank everyone for taking part, both in submitting name entries and in voting. This campaign has been a wonderful opportunity for east Belfast and the broader Belfast community to put their stamp on, take ownership of and name these bridges and pathway. We hope these will become an important asset to the character and infrastructure of east Belfast.” The new pathway to be named will be the next section of the Greenway to open later this year, following the completion of works in Orangefield and Victoria Parks last year. Farrans Construction is currently undertaking Phase 2 construction works with works continuing at major sections including the C.S. Lewis Square at Holywood Arches, Avoniel, The Hollow at Elmgrove, Mersey Street, and many other sites across east Belfast to better connect people and places, with the greenway providing 16km of new cycle and walkways and 23 new or improved bridges and crossings upon completion by mid2017. The panel confirmed that there will be a number of further structures to be named along the Connswater Community Greenway during 2016.

EAST BELFAST BORN ELEANOR CELEBRATES “TITANIC” BIRTHDAY IN WHITE STAR STYLE C E N TE N A RY C E L E B RATI O N

T

he 100 year old’s father, Ambrose Willis, the man behind Titanic’s beautiful carved wooden fireplaces and paneling, features in one of the world’s largest Titanic visitor experience’s artefacts – a paybook of Harland and Wolff employees, which helps tell the story of not only Titanic but the city and people that built her. The artefact with her father’s sign ature will take pride of place at Eleanor’s birthday party, which will see visitors travel from as far as Australia to take part in the milestone celebration. Eleanor Thompson, recalled, “There is no doubt that my father loved his job and was very proud of the work he did. All the furniture for RMS Titanic was built in what we called ‘The Yard’ here in Belfast and that’s what my father oversaw! When I watch James Cameron’s TITANIC or visit Titanic Belfast – I look out for the woodwork, including the famous staircase, fireplaces and panelling as I know that’s what my father worked on! He used to come home smelling of varnish and paint. He even travelled on board Titanic to South Hampton but had to return to Belfast as Olympic, her sister ship was on the stocks. He was fortunate he had to return – or otherwise I may not have been born in 1916 and wouldn’t be celebrating my 100th birthday at Titanic Belfast this weekend!” Eleanor’s eldest son Peter, who travelled from Australia to be part of the celebrations, said, “ It only seems fitting to celebrate my mother’s

milestone birthday at Titanic Belfast, Northern Ireland’s most iconic building, given our family’s connection to RMS Titanic and Harland and Wolff. With the Paybook artefact set to be on display at the party – it is a great honour that we are able to showcase this to my mother’s guests with the help of team at Titanic Belfast.” Tim Husbands MBE, said, “Belfast, being the home of Titanic, were it was built, designed and launched, has such a strong personal connection to the ship. This is epitomised in Eleanor’s story and her memories of her father. It is a very special occasion to have 100th birthday party here at Titanic Belfast, but this is especially true for Eleanor as the daughter of Chief Interior Draftsman who travelled on board the ship. At Titanic Belfast, we have welcomed guests including Her Majesty the Queen but our staff equally loved having Eleanor visit and hearing her stories about her father and the Yard at Harland and Wolff! They are very much looking forward to hosting her 100th birthday party!” Titanic Belfast, which has been described by the Prime Minister as ‘absolutely brilliant’ has now welcomed over 2.8 million visitors. It was also recently included in Lonely Planet’s Ultimate Travelist of 500 of the world’s most striking locations, featuring everything from imposing temples to hidden gems, after only three years in operation and was named the ninth best rated museum in the UK Travellers’ Choice™ awards, announced by TripAdvisor.

t approximately 7pm on Thursday 21st April, Her Majesty the Queen, accompanied by The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall lit the principal beacon in Windsor Great Park, setting in train a series of more than 1,000 beacon illuminations across the country and worldwide. There is a long and unbroken tradition of firing beacons to commemorate great royal and national occasions but, for the first time in history, members of the Army Cadet Force, representing the youth of the nation, played their own special part in the fiery celebrations. Parties of Army Cadets took gas-fuelled beacons to the tops of the four highest peaks in the United Kingdom - Ben Nevis, Scotland; Mount Snowdon, Wales; Scafell Pike, England, and, here in Northern Ireland, Slieve Donard.

THAN KS TO LEARNING B R E AK THRO UGH MAKING A DIFFERENCE

BEN’S READING AGE INCREASED BY 4 YEARS. HIS SELF-ESTEEM IS NOW FLYING HIGH

Ben

t the end of P6 Ben received a Statement of Special Educational Needs which stated that he had a Significant Specific Learning Difficulty with Dyslexia. At this stage Ben had great trouble with reading, writing and spelling. He could learn spellings on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday but on Thursday he would have to learn them all for a test on Friday and it would be like starting to learn them all over again. Ben’s concentration span was limited, he had difficulty retaining information and in group work he would become withdrawn as he knew what he wanted to say but couldn’t get the words out on time. Homework took a very long time to complete, he found it difficult to mix with and make friends and his sports ability in team games like football were not of a high standard; all of which did little for his self-esteem. On the plus side Ben is a very funny, loving and practical boy who loves being outside. He enjoys gardening, fishing, cycling and walking in the mountains. He is a great help on the building site with his Granddad and uncle and has a great sense of fairness towards others. I read about the Learning Breakthrough Programme in NI4kids and talked my husband into going to see Susan. I had my mind made up that we

were going to do the programme but my husband was a bit skeptical. Having met with Susan, my husband agreed that it was the right thing to try for Ben. The programme consists of 15 minutes, twice per day of balance and co-ordination exercises that re-organise the brain. Thankfully it didn’t involve more of what Ben already found difficult i.e. extra spellings or reading. We started the programme in the August and Ben started 9th year junior high school in that September. •IN THE CHRISTMAS EXAMS BEN GOT FIVE 1ST PLACES. •BY MARCH HE WON THE BB BIBLE QUIZ CUP. •IN THE MAY EXAMS BEN GOT SIX 1ST PLACES. •IN SEPTEMBER HE MOVED UP A CLASS IN SCHOOL! His dad and I weren’t sure if we had made the right decision in agreeing to Ben moving up. We were worried that he wouldn’t be able to cope with the work but Ben himself wanted to move up as it got him within one class of some of his new friends. He was even talking recently of getting moved up again. Well … we shouldn’t have worried at all. In the Christmas assessments Ben got two 1st places and three 2nd places! What an achievement. We are very proud parents. The teachers are now talking about Ben doing GCSE’s, something I

thought would never happen. That’s not all; Ben has also been made Prefect for the next year. His form teacher commented on his report:“Ben is a well-mannered, trustworthy and respectful member of class. This is reflected in his appointment as a school prefect. His excellent exam results have also been recognised with the Class Prize Award. Well done Ben!” Having finished 12 months of the programme we now have a son who came first not last. His confidence has soared and he has become a real whizz on the computer. We now have a son who started year 8 with a reading age of 6yrs and 10mths and at the end of year 9 he has a reading age of 10yrs and 6 months. What more can I say? It takes commitment to keep going with the exercises but it’s worth every minute when your child comes home from school with good news and a smile on his face knowing that his hard work is paying off. WHAT WOULD I SAY ABOUT THE LEARNING BREAKTHROUGH PROGRAMME? It is a programme that we would strongly urge other parents to try. It has certainly unlocked our on’s potential and had made a massive difference to Ben’s life and to our family as a whole.”

a Bella Vita - a hair extension specialist and beauty salon located in Dundonald - began life as a parttime hobby for the two students, both at university, but both with a love for looking good. Katie explains: “I had just celebrated my 21st birthday, and had received some money from gifts from family. Sarah was just 19 at the time, and asked her family for a small loan.We did our research into best course available and made the journey to London to learn the art of hair extensions.” It wasn’t long before the word of their trip spread to friends, and before long they were getting bookings. Sarah continued: “We decided to make a Facebook page and see if we could get any bookings outside of our friendship circle to make a bit of extra cash whilst studying. Literally within a few hours, we had private mail, after private

mail and found ourselves booked solidly. At the time I was studying Cardiology at the Ulster University and Katie was studying Film studies at Queens, so our appointments had to fit in between our busy lectures and course work.” The team worked night and day from their parent’s houses whilst studying, with both turning spare bedrooms into mini salons – and the two just alternated between houses depending on who wasn’t at class. On June 1, 2014 La Bella Vita, Dundonald was launched with six staff and a treatment list to rival any city centre salon. The business boomed, the girl’s graduated and the clients just kept coming. And within just eleven months of trading, Katie and Sarah were recognised at a glittering event at the City Hall, picking up the Young Business Person

Both of our parents were there, our partners and the team – it made all of our very hard work worth while.” But the celebrations weren’t just a one-off - a few months’ later, the entire team were recognised at the Northern Ireland Hair & Beauty Awards scooping Hair Extension Team of the Year 2015. And to top it all off, Katie and Sarah have just been recognised as the Young Entrepreneurs of the Year at the Lisburn and Castlereagh Business Awards 2016. Sarah concluded: “It has been a whirlwind few years, and we have had to learn by hitting the ground running. But we have a fantastic team, a very loyal client base and were are very much looking forward to what the future holds.”

HILLMOUNT DONATION TO ULSTER AVIATION MUSEUM Robin Mercer of Hillmount Garden Centre, with garden centres in Belfast and Bangor, donates a £3,000 hot air balloon and basket to Ulster Aviation Museum in Lisburn following a personal invitation to attend this year’s Official Philippine International Hot Balloon Fiesta. Robin said: “When I saw the joy that our balloon brought to so many thousands of children in the Philippines I decided the best way to encourage future generations to enjoy my love of hot air ballooning in Northern Ireland would be to donate my balloon to the society so they can learn practically how exciting this hobby can be. Experiencing a real hot air balloon is unique.”Receiving the balloon, Ray Burrows, Chairman of the Ulster Aviation Society, said: “Being presented with the balloon by Hillmount is fantastic as we can now show children what it’s like to get airborne for those very first flights. The make up of the basket, the size of the envelope and the very basic concept of hot air taking you upwards will be so much easier explained with an actual balloon.” HILLMOUNT GARDEN CENTRE WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1940 AND HAS TWO GARDEN CENTRES, ONE IN GILNAHIRK AND ONE IN BANGOR.

olleagues at Castlereagh Road Tesco store in Belfast are expected to raise buckets over the weekend of 13-14 May when they take part in the nationwide 30 minute bucket collection challenge for the National Charity Partnership between Tesco, Diabetes UK and the British Heart Foundation (BHF). Launched in January 2015, the three year partnership between Tesco, Diabetes UK and the BHF aims to raise £30 million. Working in teams, Tesco colleague from the Castlereagh Road will compete with each other to see which team can raise the most during 30 minute segments of bucket collection activity. This event is part of the three year National Charity Partnership between Tesco, Diabetes UK and the BHF. Customers will be asked to dig deep to support colleagues in their fundraising for the charities and the work of the partnership. The money raised by Tesco colleagues from events like the 30 minute bucket collection challenge will fund the vital and ongoing work of both charities, It will also fund joint projects by all three partners, such as Lets Do This- a campaign designed to inspire millions of people to set achievable lifestyle goals to boost their health and wellbe-

ing. The aim is to help reduce millions of people's risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and heart and circulatory disease through promoting a healthy lifestyle. There are currently thousands of people who are at increased risk of developing heart and circulatory disease. being active and eating well are key steps people can take to reduce their risk of developing both conditions. In 2016 the National Charity Partnership will see free, fun events and programmes being delivered in nine areas across UK, to inspire people to be active and eat well. The Partnership will also work in a further six areas to support the delivery of free food-based workshops and Beat the Street- a free real-life walking and cycling game set to inspire over 200,000 children (and their families) to get active this year. Sam Larkin Store Manager at Tesco Castlereagh Road explains." We are looking forward to getting into the spirit of fundraising for the National Charity Partnership yet again. there'll be lots of super fundraising activities in store for colleagues and customers to enjoy and I hope that people will get behind the important cause of this partnership"

with 3 full time students and now have 3 part time students and 3 on day placement with us. Each student has an individual programme tailored to their ability and aims for their future. They have all achieved their Level 1 Food Hygiene, Basic First Aid and Life Skills certificates. Our chef can award up to Level 2 Catering. In addition to training in hospitality our students have ‘classroom days’ where we, in conjunction with other agencies, aim to improve the long-term employability and increase self esteem and confidence so that they can develop skills and achieve qualification that will enable them to move into further training or employment. As a result of the project, we have already seen huge development with our team becoming more ambitious with experience and as their ability and confidence increases it is a joy to watch. We have excellent parking facilities and are close to local schools, the Ulster Hospital and local entertainment. We would be delighted to welcome you and are confident you’ll find Level Ground a vibrant place to visit.

LOCAL NEWS EAST BELFAST STUDENT DESIGNER’S COLLECTION TO COME ALIVE ON THE CATWALK CATWALK KING

Local student Jeremy Huddlesonfrom Gilnahirk will be among some of Northern Ireland’s future fashion designers who will showcase their latest designs next month as part of the hotly anticipated Ulster University Graduate Fashion show.

A

fashion favourite on the stylista’s schedule, the event will take place at the iconic Europa hotel in Belfast on 26 May, where final year students’ work will storm the catwalk displaying their unique style and individual vision. With some truly inspiring and creative pieces including knits, prints and jaw-dropping silhouettes in the mix, the students will no doubt wow the audiences. Ahead of the event Jeremy said “From the conceptual idea in my

head, to putting pen to paper and sketching a 5 piece collection, before uncountable and pain-staking hours at a sewing machine, it’s cathartic to come full circle as we prepare for our pieces to come alive on real life models, with creative hair and make up to create a full fashion theatre experience. It brings the whole project full circle and it has certainly helped me learn the importance of things like commerciality versus

creativity for example, so it is such a fantastic way to finish our degree and help launch our fashion careers.” Student Jeremy will see his collection ‘Decadence in a time of crisis’ modelled on show presenter and producer Cathy Martin’s CMPR Models with hair perfectly styled by the inventive team at Andrew Mulvenna hair and beautiful make up looks created by the talented artists at MNX Pro.

ether is a fantastic promotion of the growing cultural landscape of East Belfast. The events cover art, music, comedy, spoken word and walking tours. Most of the events are free. On Monday 30th May As part of the Tether festival Creative Exchange Artists’ Studios are opening the doors of the studios to give the public an inside view of their space and meet artists. Creative Exchange is based at Portview Trade centre, 310 Newtownards Rd and houses 13 artists, including painters, sculptors, socially engaged artists, a ceramicist and digital based artists. This year the studios are also celebrating their 20-year anniversary, with a number of projects under the banner 20/20, with this open studio day being the first event of many. In addition to the open studios events, at 1.30pm, Creative Exchange member Deirdre Robb, will lead a walking party to Framewerk Galley to view her latest exhibition ‘Pausal’, and also give an artist’s talk at the gallery from 2pm. Deirdre’s exhibition is based on the impact that the process of entering menopause can have on a woman’s life. Initially it stemmed on her own personal experience of the many symptoms she encountered, however the work is universal in context and has been expanded to reflect many women’s experiences. The artworks reveal both emotional and physical changes that reflect the withdrawal symptoms of oestrogen leaving a women’s body. Her art visually represents

transitions relating to the body, as well as documenting pain, transformation, tension and beauty. For more information visit Framewerk at 10 Upper Newtownards Road or www. framewerkbelfast.com or Creative Exchange at www.creativexchange.org.uk Another Creative Exchange artist Stephen Millar is currently working with children at Scoil an Drochid, Ormeau Rd towards an exhibition of their artwork in SKAINOS. Stephen is the school’s artist in residence and has been working in the school as an art therapist and art facilitator for the last two years. His own artwork takes the form of painting and illustration and in 2015 he was commissioned to create colourful murals and playground art for the school brightening up the school walls and play areas. The exhibition has been set up by the school to spread the word about the promotion of Irish language in south and east Belfast. The title and the theme of the exhibition is ‘Beal Feirste’ so the children are creating artwork which evokes their own interpretation of this city. Scoil an Drochid is also celebrating a much needed capital build project for a new school. The exhibition opens on Thursday 26th May at 10.30am, the school choir will open celebrations and guest speakers include Linda Ervine , Máirtín Ó Muilleoir , Seán Mac Seáin, The exhibition is open to all.

A VERY RED EYE? OPTICAL ADVICE

MAY 2016

Have you ever had the white of your eye turn very red? Not pink when you have conjunctivitis but really red. It can be very shocking in appearance and looks like something from a horror film. Often the person with the red eye does not realise until someone else points it out.

T

his is what we call a subconjunctival haemorrhage. It happens when blood leaks from a blood vessel and gathers under the conjunctiva, the skin of the eye. Even a very small amount of blood can spread out into a large patch.

Why does it happen?

It is usually due to an injury to the eye or as a result of a temporary surge in blood pressure. Various causes can be related to excessive straining. A few of the stories I have come across are – a man moving heavy plant pots in the garden; a lady pulling out her fridge to clean in behind it; a man who had joined a choir and was singing high notes with gusto; along with many tales of coughing, sneezing, eye rubbing and even constipation.

What do I do?

ry Rosema rs McWatte WWW

Be patient. This is the same as a bruise elsewhere in the body where there is blood under the skin but in the eye it is more visible. Just as a bruise fades so it takes time for the blood to reabsorb and can be 2-3 weeks before it is completely clear. When this occurs without a clear link to an event that explains it, or if it happens repeatedly, you should make sure that you have your blood pressure checked. There is no treatment required. It is not usually sore and does not affect the vision. If the eye feels slightly irritated then artificial tear drops may help to moisturise the eye and improve comfort. You may wish to contact your optometrist for advice and reassurance.

Nasal sprays are used to relieve nasal congestion and commonly used alongside antihistamines. HAIRSTYLE TRENDS FROM THE CATWALK FOR SPRING/SUMMER

MY TOP PICKS

FOR HAIRCUT TRENDS THIS SUMMER BY S A BR IN A R OBIN S ON / S R HAIR DR E S S I NG << A PIXIE CUT or a variation of the cut is going to be a huge trend for the rest of the year. If you’re thinking about this cut you should ask your stylist for short hair around the perimeter of the face with the option of having varying lengths throughout the top, around the ears, and at the nape. To wear it modernised, keep the same overall length framing the face. Styling it, use a bit of gel to comb it into the desired direction to create a wet, sleek look, or it can be tousled with your hands and a blow dryer into your desired shape.

The Pixie

THE BOB is a classic haircut that never seems to go out of fashion, you only have to look at the A-listers like Taylor swift who are wearing the style at the minute. It’s also a hairstyle that looks good all year round. You can crop it short for a 1920s style, or grow it shoulder-length for the fashionable lob look, the bob is versatile you can style it tousled or straight, wear it in a side or centre parting or with a fringe .

Afro Curls AFRO HAIR and its natural texture

On the catwalks this season the super straight locks have returned, sleek with an amazing shine. The Wet-looking effect is also trending not only on straight hair but on braids also. Straight hair was not only left loose, but was also tied up into low, sleek ponytails.Choker hair (straight hair was tucked into scarves and chokers to create a chic style), found its way onto the catwalk, also textured and messy puns were popular amongst designers accessorised with hairbands and clips.

was fully highlighted on the Spring/Summer 2016 fashion weeks. You can wear it tied up in a chignon (like beyonce), long with full volume or cropped short, the catwalks displayed Afro hair with an emphasis on natural texture and curl. The Afro curl looks will be popular in 2016.

tapered at the bottom, with more weight at the top. The final shape should resemble a heart or diamond. Since this look is all about bouncy, healthy curls, hydration is key.

Longer Layers

<<LAYERS are stunning on mid to longer hair, they remove just the right amount of weight to give the hair movement, without making the ends look over-layered and untidy. The most flattering of layers begins right below the jawline. Layers look amazing on all face shapes and depending on how they are styled, they can flatter some face shapes more than others. Removing the weight from your hair by using layers can knock some time off of your blow dry.

uxurious fabrics, metallics, excessive ornamentation and swirling florals: the Baroque period’s legacy continues to influence design throughout the ages, from fashion to furniture to architecture. The Baroque style reflects a love of overthe-top decoration, lavishness and little regard for functionality – it’s design as pure theatre. It’s heyday was in the royal courts of 17th century Europe where the more luxurious and grandiose your décor, the better. Today however, the look is more subdued with rich, deep colours set against a lighter backdrop and choosing well-considered items to really shine and show off. All this indulgence and excess might seem the complete antithesis to the rugged and rusty look of today’s industrial zeitgeist. Yet the two looks bring drama in completely different ways, creating a pleasing contradiction between rusty and royal, factory and finery. Try combining

O

ver the last decade almost one in seven people now work from home. If you’re part of the growing crowd, or pondering membership, creating a space in your home which effectively separates your home life from your work life can be a major advantage for productivity. However, unless you’re capable of religiously shutting out distractions, no matter what they might be, then procrastination will be your chief antagonist. After all, staunch commitment can only take you so far, even if you have a dedicated room to work in. A potential solution can be found in gearing the design of your room towards a work friendly aesthetic. It sounds like simple common sense but it’s something which is often overlooked. Unnecessary clutter is the first thing to attack on your way to work space tranquillity. Clear out the books, the DVDs, the papers and even the furniture that is going to distract you, and replace them with things relevant to your company/ brand and smart but simple furnishings to illustrate the point that this is a place of work. If you opt to save some floor space and choose a wardrobe in which to store your important documents, rather than oodles of filing cabinets, you will find two things happen: firstly, your room has transitioned from crowded with freestanding furniture to open plan and spacious. Secondly, thanks to our tailor-made service, everything is now safely tucked away in a place of its own, neatly contained in a stylish shell. Consistency is important so match your wardrobe with any freestanding furniture you do have. We can match the vast majority of colours thanks to our wide range or we can simply custom build your desk and cabinets for you. Whatever your storage needs, ensure they help you fulfil your vision and energise your working environment so you can achieve your potential.

IKEA UK launches new “Solar Shops” IKEA UK has announced a newlook home solar offer featuring IKEA branded “Solar Shops” in store, as part of the company’s mission to help people live more sustainably and affordably in their homes. The announcement coincides with new research by IKEA UK which reveals that a third (31%) of NI homeowners would like to invest in solar panels for their home. The key factor influencing decisions being the desire to cut your electricity bills and save money (62%), with statistics suggesting the average UK homeowner could save up to 50%* on their electricity bills. Helping to support these ambitions, IKEA “Solar Shops” will launch in three major stores across the UK, with a plan to sell solar panels in all stores, including Belfast’s Holywood Exchange store by the end of the summer, following an initial UK pilot.

STRATEGIC THINKING: FROM VOLUNTEER TO DIRECTOR C AR E E R J O U R N E Y / L I NDA W I L L I A M SON

It’s 25 years since East Belfast’s Linda Williamson, director of Citizens Advice Belfast, joined the organisation as a volunteer. Here she explains how belfast has changed with the times and why running a voluntary organisation is like running any business. Advice is free to the end user, but there are costs to cover, budgets to balance and contracts to win. Innovation is the key to success.

L

ast year, Linda Williamson was appointed Director of Citizens Advice Belfast, an organisation she’s worked for in a variety of roles for the last 25 years. But it wasn’t so much her experience in the voluntary advice sector that won Linda the top job. It was her strategic thinking and vision for the future: “The CAB I work for today is a completely different organisation to the one I joined all those years ago as a volunteer. I’m lucky. I’ve had a chance to influence, innovate and change our ways of working throughout my career with the organisation. The clients and their needs are obviously at the heart of everything CAB does, but we are a business. Advice is free to the end user but the service we provide incurs costs, which we have to meet. And we can’t continue to grow and develop as a business without the money to do it.”

@

Today Citizen Advice Belfast employs 21 paid staff and 45 trained volunteer advisers. Last year they helped over 38,000 people coming through their doors and dealt with over 52,000 problems – an increase of 30% on the previous year. Staff numbers were higher when Linda joined the organisation back in 1991 at the age of 23. A degree in Social Administration & Policy had helped her get a job with the Social Security Agency but, when her sixmonth contract came to an end, she saw it as an ‘opportunity’ to volunteer for Citizens Advice Belfast and get specialist advice training into the bargain. It wasn’t long before Linda got her first paid post as an Outreach Adviser in Short Strand and knew she’d found the right career. On her next rung up the career ladder, Linda was given the opportunity to modernise and expand CAB services right across Belfast. As

Service Development Manager, she realised that the organisation, which up until then had focussed on providing face to face advice in its offices, could help more people by promoting its telephone helpline. Since then, CAB services have been transformed. The introduction of a telephone ‘triage’ line means callers get through to the right adviser. The organisation still offers face to face meetings with advisers but the helpline means ‘quick fix’ concerns can be addressed there and then, leaving the team more time to deal with more complex cases. Every year CAB deals with questions about benefit entitlements, housing problems, employment issues, family disputes and breakdowns, wills, tax… and the list goes on. CAB receives funding from the Department of Social Development, Belfast City Council and Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. Under

Linda’s leadership it has also entered into working partnerships with Cystic Fibrosis and Macmillan Cancer Support. “Both these leading charities know that people affected by cancer and cystic fibrosis can find themselves in need of specialist benefits advice as a result of their condition and treatment. The charities came to us to share expertise and, together, we have set up ‘bespoke’ advice services with a dedicated helpline and advisers. This sort of partnership working gets results. Last year, for instance, our CAB Macmillan advisers helped people affected by cancer claim a staggering £6.5 million in welfare payments. That’s money they might not have claimed, or even known they were entitled to - without us.” During the course of her career with CAB, Linda has had the chance to train volunteers, helping not only

clients but the volunteers themselves. Many use the work experience and training to go on and get paid work. In fact, Linda is always encouraging volunteers and staff to think about their career development and ‘change jobs every 3 – 4 years’. Which begs the question: why hasn’t she? “Most people move on because they outgrow an organisation for lack of personal development and opportunities. I’ve been lucky and given the responsibility to develop and improve our ways of working. I’ve been appointed Director because of my commitment to innovation and the need to innovate. It’s not about keeping up with the times, it’s about staying one step ahead. That’s the only way we will survive. Put simply: it’s not just the private sector that has to deal with competition. The same goes for the voluntary advice sector.”

rom fine art and jewellery to silver, furniture and collectables, it seems we can’t get enough of the past and, in a year packed with historic anniversaries, local auction audiences are ‘going mad’ for militaria and also for memorabilia from The Troubles and Partition. The increase in business has prompted Bloomfield Auctions to move to a larger facility within the historic Owen O’Cork Mill complex on Belfast’s Beersbridge Road, just yards away from its original home. Karl says, “This great new space is allowing us to expand still further our eclectic weekly auction of household, vintage & valuable and we’re currently calling for people to bring us lots for sale in some particularly significant Summer events. We’ve also developed for the first time an easy to use on-line bidding which means that, even if you can’t be at an auction in person, you can still be in it to win it!” This Summer will see a major focus on Militaria and Medals; Guns, Swords and Bayonets and vintage items from the Royal Irish Constabulary, Royal Ulster Constabulary and 36th Ulster Division. Memorabilia from The Troubles and Partition will also be much to the fore. Karl says, “The growth of interest – and value - across these sectors has been incredible and interest from collectors is already high. We’re looking forward to an amazing auction night with fascinating pieces and possibly some fabulous prices as well

for the high end items. This is a broad sector which will be of huge interest to the growing number of collectors out there, but I would urge people to go and have a rummage through their own homes: they might be surprised at what they can unearth from our recent history and I know they’ll be delighted at what some of those previously overlooked and under-valued items might fetch at auction!” Forthcoming auctions will also feature Vintage Toys and Collectables as well as Fine Art, Silver, Antiques and Jewellery and lots are already being collated and assessed. Karl says, “People can be a bit tentative about bringing their items to an auction house, particularly first time around, but we work hard to make the experience pleasant as well as profitable and we’ll happily advise on valuations, whatever you bring to us. We reckon there’s nothing to beat the excitement of watching an auction in full flow with people bidding on your item! It’s certainly a great incentive for some Spring cleaning! Buying too is easier than you might imagine, with opportunities to view what’s on offer in the week before the auction and we’re always happy to provide some guideline prices and guidance on how to bid, in person or on-line. Buying or selling, auctions always have an aura of excitement about them and there is always the potential for a few great surprises amongst the craic and the crack of the hammer!”

BELFAST A THROUGH TIME BY AIDAN C AMPBELL

The History Man Takes You On A Journey

idan Campbell’s latest local history book is ‘Belfast Through Time’ and will be officially published on Thursday 26th May 2016 at Hillmount Garden Centre, Gilnahirk 10.30am – all welcome. It follows on from the publication of 11 local histories covering areas of East Belfast and 1 on South Belfast. On this occasion the theme is Greater Belfast. The book takes the form of a number of views of many of the areas of Belfast from years ago,

especially from old postcards and these scenes are compared with a modern photographs taken from, where possible, the same location. Belfast (Irish: Beal Feirste – mouth of the sandbank ford) is the capital city of Northern Ireland. The site of Belfast has been described as ‘not built on a perfect site’ given that the original settlement was located on low-lying land on the Co. Antrim side of the River Lagan. It was during the Victorian period that wealthy business

MAY 2016 owners moved out of the old town and built grand villas on the hills surrounding the city. There are views of big houses, grand public buildings and churches, public transport including trams, trolleybuses and steam trains, factories and suburbia. Many of these scenes are remarkably unchanged and much of the character of the bustling industrial city remains, while many locations have been swept away and are unrecognizable following recent developments.

HOLYWOOD ARCHES The Holywood Arches were railway bridges that carried the Belfast & County Down Railway (BCDR) line across the Holywood Road and Upper Newtownards Road (pictured in 1962) to Newtownards via Comber from May 1850. However they are not located in Holywood and are not arches. The BCDR has been described as ‘a child of the 1846 railway mania’. The line was closed in 1950 after nearly one hundred years in business and the railway arches were later demolished. However, the stone pillars were left in situ for several years and then demolished in the 1960s. Unfortunately as road traffic increased this created a well-known bottleneck on the main road to Stormont Parliament Buildings, the seat of government in Northern Ireland, and there is barely enough space for this trolleybus to pass

THE ALBERT BRIDGE The Lagan Bridge (or Halfpenny Bridge, so called because of the toll charge) collapsed in 1886 and a new bridge called the Albert Bridge was opened in 1890. The large building to the right of the bridge is Albertbridge Congregational Church located on Short Strand. It was built in 1866 facing the River Lagan and a sandy shore. The church was something of a landmark, on entering East Belfast from the Albert Bridge, as in recent years it had an illuminated sign which bore a scriptural message. This church building was demolished in 1985 and a new church built at neighbouring Woodstock Link.

BELFAST CITY HALL The statue of Queen Victoria in front of Belfast City Hall was originally located in Donegall Square North but now looks in the direction of Donegall Place and Royal Avenue. The activity in the foreground involves ‘building air raid shelters during the crisis, September 1938’. The Second World War would begin a year later in September 1939. The building in the distance in Donegall Square East is Imperial House which was constructed in the 1930s on the site of the Linenhall Hotel. Alongside is the columned frontage of Donegall Square Methodist Church, built in 1847, which survives although this is now the head

GREAT NORTHERN RAILWAY STATION The three railway terminus buildings in Belfast from Victorian times until the 1970s included the Belfast & County Down Railway at Queen’s Quay (BCDR), The Northern Counties Committee (NCC) or L.M.S. on York Street and the Great Northern Railway (GNR) on Great Victoria Street. The GNR was originally known as the Ulster railway and heralded the first railway line in Belfast which travelled 7 ½ miles to Lisburn in 1837. The Great Northern Railway Station was opened in 1848 and its imposing façade (above) containing twelve Doric columns has been described as ‘pompous’. In 1971 it was replaced by the Europa Hotel which was known as ‘Europe’s most bombed hotel’.

SHAW’S BRIDGE Shaw’s Bridge is a solid stone structure with five arches which spans the River Lagan, as in this summer scene from 1952. It has been a crossing point since stone-age times and the first wooden bridge was constructed here in 1617. In 1655 a Captain Shaw, in Oliver Cromwell’s army, built a stronger wooden bridge capable of carrying heavy siege artillery but this was washed away in a storm and a five-arched stone bridge replaced it in 1709. The narrow road leading to Shaw’s Bridge was widened in 1975 to accommodate ever-increasing volumes of road traffic and a new bridge was constructed. The old bridge has been retained and is now part of a pedestrian area in the picturesque 4,000 acre Lagan Valley Regional Park Aidan Campbell has previously published 11 East Belfast local history books entitled: Beaconsfield, Knock, Cherryvalley, Gilnahirk, Castlereagh, Cregagh, Stormont, Sydenham, Belmont and East Belfast Revisited Volumes 1 & 2. Newtownbreda is Aidan’s latest local history book. Aidan regularly gives illustrated talks to local groups and societies. The books retail at £10.00 each and most are available at Hillmount Garden Centre, Marie Curie Hospice, Hamilton News Cregagh and The Wingrove, Ballyhackamore with profits donated to local charity.

he taste-bud tickling tour has two different itineraries that will put a big smile on the faces of good food and drink lovers, explained Caroline McComb, Director of McComb’s Coach Travel. “We have been so excited about unveiling our newest tours as the calibre of the brands and people involved is of such a high quality. There are two tours to choose from, depending on what your tastes are, that include visits to Abernethy Butter, The Poacher’s Pocket, Mourne Seafood Bar, Echlinville Distillery and Kilmegan Cider.” The transport for the tour will be a luxurious McComb’s coach so it is only fitting that the food is top quality as well, continued Caroline. “Our Grub Crawl really is a day out for those who like to experience Northern Ireland food, drink and hospitality at its best. So leave the car behind and allow our driver to transport you from one amazing experience to the next without having to worry about what you’re drinking, finding a parking space or paying for taxis – just indulge and enjoy yourself!” The Friday and Saturday Grub Crawls both depart from Glengall Street in Belfast which is also the last stop. Caroline said: “The Friday Grub Crawl gets off to a great start with a visit to Abernethy Butter where guests will see a demonstration of how they create butter from scratch and afterwards enjoy lashings of amazing Abernethy Butter on some delicious home-made soda bread

with a cup of tea. Next stop is the village of Lisbane, to locally owned restaurant The Poachers Pocket where everyone will raise a glass of Craft Beer before tucking into a delicious tasting platter starter, followed by a choice of four main courses and if you have any room left, there will be locally produced cheeses with crackers and chutney to finish. “Next stop on the Friday Grub Crawl is the newly constructed, Echlinville Distillery in Kircubbin, where Dunville Whiskey and Jawbox Gin are produced. This will be a gin-lovers paradise as the head distiller leads you on a tour of the distillery before sampling some of Echlinville Distillery’s famous products. The tour will then travel back to Belfast city centre.” The Saturday Grub Crawl also begins at Abernethy Butter before moving on to the fishing village of Dundrum, explained Caroline. “In Dundrum we will visit Kilmegan Cider and see first-hand how this Great Taste Award Winning local cider is brewed,” said Caroline. “We will then get the opportunity to taste the subtle differences between their Real Cider, Irish Farmhouse Cider and much loved Elderflower Cider. The final stop of the day will be at Mourne Seafood Bar where guests will tuck into a two course lunch of tasting platters, and a choice of no less than five main courses (including seafood, vegetarian, and non-fish options) as the head chef talks about his passion for food.”

BELFAST CITY AIRPORT HELPS COMMEMORATE THE ‘BELFAST BLITZ’

Lyttle helps local rugby club secure funding

who perhaps may not have prior knowledge of the Blitz. The airport’s Community Fund is dedicated to supporting projects which offer a fantastic opportunity for engagement with the local community and encourage members of all ages and backgrounds to come together for a joint cause. We wish the Glentoran Community Trust well with its future projects.” Sam Robinson, board member of the Glentoran Community Trust, said: “We were delighted to receive the support of the airport for our commemoration event. The Belfast Blitz had a significant impact on the city of Belfast in 1941, and saw a loss of over 1,000 lives in the attacks which occurred on Easter Tuesday and May 4th. Alongside an overwhelming loss of life, many iconic locations in the city were damaged extensively, including the shipyard and aircraft factory. We hope that we have provided the people of Belfast with a great opportunity to reflect on the history of the city and the great work carried out by the emergency services of Northern Ireland at the time.”

The Belfast Blitz had a significant impact on the city of Belfast in 1941, and saw a loss of over 1,000 lives in the attacks which occurred on Easter Tuesday and May 4th.

T

he event, entitled ‘A Bomber’s Moon’, invited members of the public to the Oval, home of Glentoran Football Club, on the evening of the 75th anniversary of the attacks to pay tribute to the loss experienced by the people of Belfast. Supported by the airport’s Community Fund, the event involved a remembrance service, a wreath-laying ceremony, a display of WWII memorabilia, and a variety of 1940/50s musical entertainment. Since its inception in 2009, the airport’s Community Fund has engaged with a range of local community projects including new educational campaigns, charity projects and community programmes - and has donated approximately £250,000 to over 100 projects across the Greater Belfast area. Representing the Community Fund Committee, Margaret Curliss said: “We were honoured to have the opportunity to support ‘A Bomber’s Moon’. This was a wonderful project which presented the entire city of Belfast with a great platform to remember the events of May 4th, 1941. The evening was also the perfect occasion to educate the younger people of Belfast,

East Belfast Alliance Assembly candidate Chris Lyttle has helped a local rugby club secure funding for a major sporting festival. Mr Lyttle was speaking after the awarding of the Belfast City Council Sports Event Grant to Malone Mini Rugby Club to help fund its Mini-Rugby Festival 2016. He said he was delighted with the news.“The grant will help the club to build on the success of previous events, and to make it bigger and better than ever. The festival is an excellent opportunity for young rugby players from across the UK and Ireland to participate in what is sure to be a fantastic minirugby tournament in Belfast. I congratulate everyone involved with Malone Rugby Club on both this award and the success of their mini-rugby generally, and wish them all the best for a fantastic festival on April 30.”

Civil Service North of Ireland Cricket Club (CSNI) recently held their annual fundraiser at Drumbo Park, Lisburn, where they held ‘A night at the Dogs’. The event proved to be a huge success and provided guests with top quality entertainment, good food, great prizes to be won in the silent auction and raffle and a number race winners all around! The night proved particularly successful and given this success, CSNI have donated £1,000 to both Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund and Sport Changes Life. Further details on club activities will be on the club website, www.csnicc.com in due course.

Better leisure centres in Belfast have announced that they will be running a programme of summer holiday activities for children aged between 5 and 16 years. The activities are designed to offer youngsters the opportunity to enjoy sports, arts, crafts and games within a safe and friendly environment. Children will be able to enjoy up to five weeks of multi-activities, under the supervision of a fully qualified team. The schemes are an ideal way to learn a different sport and make new friends over the summer break. Over the past year, Better has forged further partnerships with sports associations who will enhance the programme and deliver a wide range of activities, such as athletics, inspired by the Rio Olympic Games, bowls, cricket, soccer and swimming that may lead to children discovering a new sport they’re passionate about. The schemes will run from 10am-4pm, Monday-Friday at the following Belfast City Council owned leisure centres - Andersonstown, Avoniel, Ballysillan, Falls, Girdwood, Grove, Loughside, Olympia, Ozone, Shankill and Whiterock. There will also be two weeks of gymnastics coaching weeks at Belvoir Activity Centre and a football coaching course at Brook Activity Centre. In addition, Avoniel, Andersonstown, Ballysillan and Olympia Centres will be offering a Sunrise Club, allowing children to be left to the centres from 8.30am. Parents and guardians are advised to register for the summer scheme from Friday 6th May – Monday 9th May. This is stage one of a two stage registration process that will help reduce long queues and offer as many children as possible the chance to get involved in the scheme. Parents can pre-register at participating leisure centres, or download and submit an application from the website, www.better.org.uk/belfast

he Duns have just hit form at the right time, finishing with four straight wins – and it was just as well, with relegation rivals Dollingstown also grabbing three points in their last game of the campaign. As with the previous match with Wakehurst, Dundela were slow out of the blocks, sloppy in possession and creating few chances. Joint manager Stephen Gourley had the first chance of the game from a corner, a header which was easily held by the Portstewart netminder. Colly Smith continued his good run of form since returning from injury, but he could only place his header high and wide of the goal. The last chance of the first half was from the energetic James Sofley, but his shot on the turn failed to trouble keeper Madison. News was filtering through that Dundela’s relegation rivals were all leading at half time. More was therefore needed and the players stepped out on the pitch facing the most crucial 45 minutes of their season.

Thankfully the increasingly jangling nerves were soon soothed when James Sofley, on his less favoured right foot, slotted the ball home, after a Scott Collins free kick fell nicely for him inside the box. TJ Murray almost had the Duns diehards celebrating again, only his booming free kick cannoned off the crossbar. Collins was now getting some joy down the right flank, and his shot was well tipped wide by Madison, before Gourley finally established a safety net, diverting a Murray corner into the net. That goal took away the tension and a more relaxed Dundela made doubly sure when Thomas Healy squeezed in a Collins cross at the far post. Gary Irwin could have put even more icing on the cake with a speculative 30 yard volley which whistled just the wrong side of the bar. The last word, though, belonged to Portstewart when the otherwise redundant Johnny Sergeant was caught sleeping, allowing a cross to drift in at his near post.

GLENS SEASON ENDS WITH DEFEAT GLENTORAN • CRUSADERS 1

GLENTOR AN ENDED A SOMEWHAT UNDISTINGUISHED PREMIER SHIP SE A SON WITH A ONE GOAL DEFE AT BY CHAMPIONS CRUSADER S AT THE OVAL .

M

anager Alan Kernaghan made three changes to the side that lost to Glenavon, introducing Jonny Smith, Barry Holland and Jonny Addis with Steven Gordon, David Scullion and Chris Morrow dropping out. Crusaders themselves also had a much rotated squad, having clinched the championship with two games to spare. The Crues made the brighter start, with Declan Caddell doing well to beat McCullough in the corner but failed to put his cross in the right place. Diarmuid O’Carroll also went close. Glentoran, though, steadily came more into the picture, with their first meaningful moment came when Kym Nelson failed to turn in Jonny Smith’s

free kick. Crusaders failed to clear the danger, with Calum Birney heading on for Curtis Allen who demanded a fine save out of visiting keeper McKibben, as the Crues appealed for an offside whistle that failed to sound The Glens, too, had a somewhat half hearted penalty appeal; claiming Colin Coates had clattered into Smith, but referee Raymond Hetherington deemed that the Crues skipper had won the ball. Somehow Coates managed to escape a booking, after unnecessarily dragging Smith to his feet. At this stage, it was all Glentoran, but this wasn’t evident on the scoresheet; Birney heading a Chris Lavery corner against the bar, with Marcus Kane

giving the woodwork another test as he got his head to the rebound. At the other end, just past the half hour, O’Carroll was anything but a fool, as he got onto the end of a Holden pass, but Elliott Morris sprang to the rescue, clawing the ball out of the bottom corner. It was the Glens, nonetheless, who finished the half the better, with Smith curling a free kick agonisingly wide, before colliding with Barry Holland as they tried to meet a Lavery cross. The second half had a distinct end of season feel; more ‘middle to middle’ than ‘end to end’, though it perked up temporarily in the one moment of excellence that decided the game – Ross Holden fastening onto Coates’ long raking pass, cutting inside to give Morris no chance. Glentoran almost bounced right back but Nelson just failed to get onto the

EAST BELFAST 4 ABBEY VILLA 3

A LAST gasp winner from James Belshaw keeps East Belfast’s promotion bandwagon still on track, though it could go right down to the wire and East’s final game of the season at home to the other main contenders for second slot, Lisburn Rangers, given that Rathfriland Rangers now look set to clinch the 1a title. This one was expected to be close, given that the sides had drawn 3-3 in Millisle earlier in the month. Luke Wilson’s opener and then a Simon Graham free kick put the EastEnders in the driving seat, only for Villa to storm back with two of their own, to leave the sides going off at the break level pegging. Dee Wright inched East in front on the resumption, but Abbey Villa once more proved a tough nut to crack, again redressing the balance, and it looked like another 3-3, until up popped Belshaw for that last minute winner. I wonder how important that goal could be in the coming weeks!

UUJ 0 BLOOMFIELD 2

BLOOMFIELD brought their season to a close with this vital two goal victory over UUJ at the Factory Grounds, Nortel. While Bloomfield have finished outside the bottom two, it does depend on how UUJ do in their two remaining games – and Donard Hospital in their last match, if they beat Rathfern Rangers by four clear goals; a result that would in turn make Rathfern’s goal difference worse than Bloomfield’s. UUJ, meanwhile, need a win from their last two games to edge them to safety. This fixture had been abandoned at half time a few weeks earlier after a hail shower. Bloomfield were 3-1 up at the time, and while UUJ were in action in Newcastle the previous night, losing 6-0, it was a makeshift side and a lot of their big guns were back for the Bloomfield game; a win for the Jordanstown outfit and they were safe, condemning the East Belfast side to 1c next term. Joint Bloomfield manager Clinton McCreery maintained, “We were well worth our win; we should have won by more. UUJ just couldn’t handle us, and our pace up front!” Bloomfield opened the scoring with a superbly struck free kick by Lewis Irwin. It didn’t hurt Bloomfield’s case either when UUJ defender Dean had a mad rush of blood to the head, lifting his hands to have a grab at Michael Bowers, giving the young referee no other option but to brandish the red card. UUJ made a double substitution at the half way mark, but they still struggled to cope with the pace of Lewis Irwin, Michael Getty and Michael Bowers – Bowers cemented what could be a precious three points, with a second goal ten minutes from time.

SIROCCO WORKS 0, NEWCASTLE 1

SINCE our last edition, Sirocco Works have been successfully eating into their hefty backlog and indeed were on the back of five successive wins which had taken them up to 1b’s top six. Sadly, the run came to an end with this one goal defeat by Newcastle at Ballyskeagh. A win over Newcastle would have given Works an outside chance of promotion but, with Wellington faltering at Colin Valley, the Mourne Men gained the points they needed to copper fasten that second promotion slot; Ballynahinch Olympic having already won the league. As the result suggests, there was little in it, with ‘Castle gaining the all important goal midway through the first half. From there on in, Newcastle decided to sit in and defend what they had. Sirocco had a chance just before the break when Kurtis Hanna was deprived by the keeper. A goal then could have made things interesting. The home side went close again after the changearound when nobody could quite reach Matthew Higginson’s tempting cross. The second session was something of an anti climax, with Newcastle doing their best to wind the clock down.

end of a McCullough cross. Meanwhile, Crusaders should have widened the margin; Carvill lobbing the ball over Jonny Addis for the nippy Holden but the young winger picked the wrong option, drilling his shot straight at Morris, when a simple pass to the unmarked Snoddy would have paid better dividends. Holden wasn’t far away soon afterwards, this time with a header. At the other end, Lavery blazed over from 15 yards, and Kane almost got headed in Addis’s long throw in. It was Crusaders, nevertheless, who would have sealed the deal but for two fine late saves by Morris to foil Forsythe and O’Carroll. Glentoran: Morris, Holland, Birney, Magee (Cafolla 51), McCullough, Kane, Addis, Nelson, Lavery (Clougherty 72), Smith, Allen (Boyd Munce 78). Subs not used: Hogg, Patton.

For the second consecutive year, staff within the Newtownards and District Primary Schools Football Association have developed a Representative Squad that will go forward and compete in the prestigious Foyle Cup in July. Sixteen schools make up the association and regularly compete in 5v5, 7v7 and 9v9 football in Londonderry Park, Newtownards. After an initial trial period, which saw 54 trialists, the 14 player squad has now been chosen. This squad continues to train together on a weekly basis where the children are beginning to develop new friendships with players from neighbouring schools. Whilst the project is about building a Representative Football Team from the sixteen schools, the players all have the unique opportunity to make new friends and develop lasting memories during the journey towards Foyle Cup Competition. The 2016 squad are delighted to have been supported by local firm, CASTLEBAWN DENTAL PRACTICE. The Newtownards & District Representative Squad 2016:
