Hans Sloane Chocolate & Fine Food Festival Returns Sweeter Than Ever! Thousands of chocolate lovers and foodies from across the island of Ireland and beyond are expected to descend again this year on the picturesque village of Killyleagh in County Down to celebrate the 2018 Finnebrogue Artisan Hans Sloane Chocolate & Fine Food Festival, 14th – 16th September.

Universal Credit begins in Holywood Area Universal Credit will be introduced in the Holywood area from Wednesday 05 September 2018.

niversal Credit replaces six existing benefits with one and is for people of working age (18 - state pension age). It is initially for new claimants in the local area. People in the Holywood area already claiming the existing benefits will not be affected until 2019, unless their circumstances change. Universal Credit will also begin in the Ballynahinch area from the same date. It has already been rolled out across a number of other areas of Northern Ireland. David Sales, Universal Credit Programme Director, explained: “Universal Credit is a significant change to how benefits are claimed. In order to ensure claimants get the support they need, it is being introduced gradually across Northern

Ireland from September 2017. This means we have been able to closely manage and learn from the rollout to date.” As Universal Credit replaces claims for multiple benefits with a single claim, it is simpler to claim and more flexible. It aims to support people into work and to earn more without losing their benefits, while ensuring those who cannot work continue to receive the financial support they need. Claims are made online, with digital support available for those who may need it. David Sales continued: “Our local staff have undertaken extensive training in preparation for Universal Credit. As it is claimed online, we have also upgraded local offices to provide a digital zone with

access to PCs and free Wi-Fi. Staff are available to guide new claimants through the process. So far, the vast majority of people have been able to make their online claim without needing additional assistance from our staff.” Universal Credit replaces Jobseeker’s Allowance (income based), Employment Support Allowance (income-related), Income Support, Housing Benefit (rental), Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credits for people aged over 18 and under State Pension age. Existing claimants will transfer to Universal Credit between July 2019 and March 2022. Some claimants will naturally move to Universal Credit earlier, where their circumstances have changed.

Dying without a Will takes away your control to decide who inherits from your Estate and also who controls the process. It is possible that someone who you wouldn’t want to inherit could take all or part of your Estate. It can also make the administration process more costly and take more time to be finalised. Leaving a valid Will is the only way to make your wishes on death known.

Q. Do I need to inform my Executor that I have appointed them in my Will? A. Although it is not necessary for you to inform your Executor of your decision to appoint them it is advisable to discuss it with them in advance. This will allow them to perhaps investigate the duties that would be involved in the administration process and takes away any surprise in the event they only discover their appointment on your death. An Executor cannot be forced to act in the role so it is always advisable to appoint a person or persons who you are

‘Both Sides’ Returns It’s back! Both Sides, Jane Coyle’s double-sided play, which charmed audiences across Northern Ireland in autumn 2017, has been invited to two picturesque venues in September.

n Saturday 15 September, it will be performed at Lisburn’s Penny Square Market in a canopied, candlelit space in the city’s historic quarter. On Wednesday 19 September, as part of the Aspects Literature Festival, the venue will be the café of North Down Museum in the grounds of Bangor Castle. Inspired by the works of Samuel Beckett, the play comprises two interlocking monologues. The first Me Here, Me is set in Paris, the second Before Before in Nice. Paris-based actress Hannah Coyle plays Stella, a

solitary young woman watching the life of the street unfold from a table in a Paris café. She senses that each passer-by has a troubling story. She has one too and fears that it is about to be revealed. Popular Belfast actress Libby Smyth plays Estelle, a glamorous middle-aged woman seated at a bar in the old town of Nice. She looks back ruefully on a turbulent, bohemian life, which has brought her joy, adventure and indescribable loss. Who are these women? What is their connection? The script of Me Here, Me was first read by Hannah Coyle in

the Centre Culturel Irlandais in Paris during the inaugural Beckett Paris Festival in March 2016. It was produced for the 2016 Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival and performed later that year at the Paris Fringe. Serves 4 4 apples, peeled, cored and chopped 200g fresh or frozen mixed berries 100g coconut sugar 100ml apple or orange juice juice of 1 lemon 1 tablespoon cornflour 1 heaped teaspoon ground cinnamon maple syrup to sweeten (optional) For the crumble topping: 100g rolled oats 100g coconut sugar 50g ground almonds 50g flaked almonds 4 tablespoons melted coconut oil To serve: vanilla coconut cream Preheat the oven to 160°C. 1. Put the apples, berries, coconut sugar, apple or orange

juice, lemon juice, cornflour and cinnamon in a large bowl and mix together, making sure the apples and berries are all coated with the juice and cornflour. Drizzle in a little maple syrup if you think the fruit is too tart. 2. Transfer to a baking dish. 3. Put all the crumble ingredients in a medium-sized bowl and mix together, then pat it on top of the apple and berry mix. 4. Bake in the oven for 50 minutes. Finish it under the grill for the last few minutes to crisp it up. It will be piping hot, so I let it stand for 10 minutes before serving. 5. When the coconut cream hits the heat of the crumble it will melt straight away, so keep it chilled in the fridge and allow people to help themselves to keep it cool until the last minute.

Echinville Distillery North Down teenagers have been making the most of their school holidays, packing outdoor adventure, sport and fun into a ten day annual Cadet Camp in England.

hile many of their mates are stuck at home complaining about being bored, or are spending their leisure time in front of computer screens, these intrepid teens have been tackling a vast range of mind- and bodystretching outdoor activities. Colonel Keith Dowell, Commandant of 2nd (Northern Ireland) Battalion Army Cadet Force, says, “Annual Camp is a traditional highpoint of our year, and for some very good reasons. As far as the Cadets are concerned, it’s all about carefree fun and adventure spent in the company of friends, while,

for parents, it’s a chance to give their children an action-packed and fully supervised summer experience without breaking the bank. “Every parent knows how difficult and expensive it can be to fill the kids’ school holidays with challenging fun activities. Cadet life opens the door to all sorts of opportunities and everything is either totally free or deliberately low in cost ... we even provide our members with free uniforms and we try to keep the camp experience at under a hundred pounds so that it is affordable for most families! “Importantly, parents know that

their kids are well supervised by expert Adult Leaders who will make sure that everyone is involved in every activity. Tony Wall, Chairman of the North Down Athletic Association, commented: “Last year’s event was record-breaking, and our Championship status will ensure this year’s race is even bigger and better. “As the route is fairly flat, it is suitable for runners of a range of abilities. We are now in September which means the kids are back to school. Unfortunately this also means an increase in the prevalence of head lice...

t Burns Pharmacy in Holywood we are happy to provide advice and treatment to resolve infestations and prevent re-infestations. Head lice is most commonly found in schoolchildren aged between 4-11 years but anyone can catch them. Lice are highly contagious and can spread quickly from person to person. They can’t fly, jump or swim and they mainly spread by climbing from the hair of an infested person to the hair of someone else during head to head contact. They can also, however, spread as a result of sharing items such as combs, brushes and hats. A head lice infestation is not the result of dirty hair or poor hygiene. All

types of hair can be affected, regardless of length or condition. Head lice are tiny grey-brown wingless insects which live by sucking blood from the scalp. Their eggs are known as ‘nits’ and these are laid and glued to the base of hair. Head Lice are frequently associated with an itchy scalp. Itching is not caused by the lice biting the scalp but by an allergic reaction to the lice. Not everyone with a head lice infestation will experience an itchy scalp, however, as not everyone is allergic to head lice. In some instances, therefore, it can take some time to notice a head lice infestation. The best method for detecting an infestation is wet combing

using a fine toothed comb available from your local pharmacy. There are three main ways of treating head lice : insecticides, Dimethicone (a silicone -based lotion) or wet combing (a nonchemical treatment). In Burns Pharmacy we will be happy to provide advice and explain the advantages and disadvantages of each method. We can also provide treatment and detection combs for patients under the Minor Ailments Scheme (i.e. provide these on prescription and free of charge, without the need to visit your doctor).
