Belmont Road Unveils New MarketinG Approach & Website T

The Strandtown Traders Association has launched a brand new website (www.belmontroadbelfast.com) for the Belmont Road Village area, along with a new proactive marketing approach aimed at promoting the area.

his initiative, part-funded by Belfast City Council, is also geared towards increasing visitor numbers and its overall profile.

Coordinated by the Strandtown Traders Association, the new website

puts the spotlight on Belmont Road as an area for everything from shopping, services, leisure, community and food. It allows for the group to showcase both the community feel and the quality and number of

interesting independent shops. The group will also be more proactive with its marketing through creating new community-focused events and advertising; ensuring everyone keeps up to date with what is going on and ultimately get involved.

Kieran Hill, independent retailer and Strandtown Traders Association representative, said:“Belmont Road is strong in independent shops, cafes and restaurants. Visitors love this and the new brand puts the focus on our variety shops and services. A lot of cities would envy the Belmont Road Village’s community feel, that its high street isn’t a cookie-cutter row of the same shops, and that it’s a modern area with a lot of history mixed in. Our new website and marketing approach for the area is all about letting the rest of the Belfast and further afield know, clearly and confidently, that there’s nowhere like the Belmont Road. Too many people miss the Belmont Road on their way to somewhere else. Or

they’re just passing through. This new identity is for them. We want them to stop, to know where we are on the map and to head here first. We want to show them what a special place this is.”

For the past number of years, Belfast City Council has funded the delivery of area-based activities aimed at supporting local neighbourhoodbased retail hubs. Activities to date have primarily focused upon increasing footfall within targeted areas and have been developed by business associations with a specific geographical focus. Strandtown Traders Association was one of seven associations that took part in this most recent project to provide mentoring support in the development of marketing and promotional plans, with the aim to increase awareness and business development for the local area.

Lagan Village Youth & Community Group in east Belfast has been awarded £5,000. They are using the grant for a Christmas street party to celebrate the diverse local community. They will have decorations to suit different faiths and will turn Ballarat Street into a Christmas wonderland.

Across Northern Ireland 21 groups are using grants of £500 to £5,000 to run their own events or activities that allow people to celebrate what makes their local community special.

Eastside Partnership Celebrates 20 Years Making Its Mark On East Belfast {#21 • O CTOBER 2016 / WORKING TO GETHER} East Belfast is changing for the better and it’s, in part, thanks to the vision and work of charitable organisation EastSide Partnership.

O

ver the past 20 years this community and voluntary organisation has developed and delivered a range of exciting regeneration projects across health, education, tourism, property, arts and community, which have brought huge benefits and have made their mark on the east of the City.

As part of their 20th anniversary celebrations the organisation will not only demonstrate their continued commitment to delivering its mission ‘to make East Belfast a better place’ but reveal an organisational name change from

East Belfast Partnership to EastSide Partnership. This new name reflects the organisation’s dedication to driving forward its important work, connecting communities, developing partnerships and influencing investment in the EastSide.

Reflecting on the past 20 years, EastSide Partnership has delivered projects and programmes, big and small, which have focused on creating healthier communities, improving relationships within and between communities, addressing poverty, dereliction and lack of opportunities.

Undoubtedly this has made a positive

impact on East Belfast with highlights including: Neighbourhood Renewal- supporting the most disadvantaged communities in east Belfast to develop project and programmes to improve the quality of life in the area Developing buildings- including; Bridges Family Practice, EastSide Visitor Centre, Avalon House, Enler Centre, George Best House, Bloomfield House, 278 Newtownards Road and Lagan Village Tower Leading the Regeneration of the Newtownards Rd- securing resources for the Environmental Improvement Scheme, new paving, tree planting and shop frontage improvements Developing Public Art & Open Spaces- including; Starlings, Urban Meadows, Yardmen Sculpture, The Searcher, Connswater Pocket Park, Tower Street Pocket Park, Pitt Park and Grampian Avenue Play Park Connswater Community Greenway- a £43m project which is transforming the landscape of east Belfast by creating a 16km linear park for walking, cycling while connecting places and communities Education- developing programmes to support better education outcomes for children and young people in the most disadvantaged areas EastSide Arts- developing the arts in east Belfast by establishing EastSide Arts, delivering three annual festivalsEastSide Arts Festival, C.S. Lewis Festival and Woodstock Rhythm and

Mental Health First Aid Training

EBCDA is hosting a free Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Training programme for people in East Belfast on Wednesday 9 and Thursday 10 November from 9:30am to 4:30pm each day (you must attend both days).

The two day course teaches participants: How to recognise the symptoms of mental health problems; How to provide initial help; How to go about guiding a person towards appropriate professional help.

This training programme is open to anyone living, working

Partnership a key ingredient to success for care experienced young people

More than 50 children and young people in care were commended for aiming high as they joined the Belfast HSC Trust Fostering Service and The Fostering Network NI at the annual Fostering Achievement Awards in Belfast in September

t is the sixth year that the awards have been held in recognition of academic, musical, sporting and social achievements of children and young people who are in foster care.

Speaking at the event, Kathleen Toner, Director of the Fostering Network NI, said: “As a charity we are aspirational for all fostered children, and those at the awards today show us what can be achieved. We are increasingly aware of the importance of the Fostering Achievement programme in supporting the aspirations of children and young people in foster care. Working with foster and kinship carers as primary educators is key to our success as is our close partnership with the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust.”

“Education in its broadest sense is crucial to providing young people with the skills and knowledge they need to make choices to reach their full potential, we are very proud of the part we play in that.”

Recognising the wide range of skills and achievements, she added: “Pursuing further education, mastering a musical instrument, learning to drive, taking ice skating lessons – these are all positive examples of what children and young people in care can achieve when Belfast HSC Trust, The Fostering Network and our foster carers work together to help young people be the very best they can be.”

Eighteen year old Shannon Massey who has lived with foster carers for almost two years and is studying for a B Tech Level 3 in Hospitality received an award in recognition of her achievements in further education. She credits her foster carers with giving her the practical support and encouragement

to pursue her ambitions: “My dream is to keep studying Hospitality and maybe some day to have a management role in a hotel. My advice to someone considering becoming a foster carer would be that you’re going to be helping a kid who probably really needs it. You could be the most positive influence they ever have.”

The five HSC trusts are currently recruiting for foster carers and a TV advertising campaign is running until early October. The Big Lighthouse Draw

Positive Ageing Month { # 2 1 • O C TO B E R 2 01 6 / AGE FRIENDLY }

Positive Ageing Month has been part of Belfast’s calendar for the three years and continues to grow bigger and more popular each year. Working with the Belfast Area Partnership Boards, Belfast City Council, Engage with Age and older people themselves, the Age-friendly Belfast team have programmed a month of fabulous activities and events for seniors, which aim to encourage better wellbeing, reduce social isolation and ensure that Belfast’s over 60s have the best October ever. Events are taking place all across the city as local cultural, arts and community groups take the opportunity to

highlight the fabulous programmes they run all year round. Many events are free or very reasonably priced and are open to both individuals and groups. On Friday the 14th October the City Hall will be transformed into a picture house showing the Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and, on October 17th the City Hall will also be hosting a fun, interactive quiz.

Other highlights include a week of tea dances, a fabulous sounds of the 60s and 70s disco, chocolate tasting in the Palm Houses, a train run to Coleraine, Guided Tours of Ravenhill, Belfast Castle and the BBC buildings, movies at the QFT and

Strand Cinema, a brand new Bingo and Bongo event in the Buffs Club, walks, talks and workshops, plus lots of great arts and culture activities hosted by our flagship arts and heritage venues. We’re delighted to also have our Belfast City Council Community Centres involved with over 150 fabulous events taking place right on your doorsteps. Angling, baking, IT classes and Tai Chi are all on the agenda alongside more traditional workshops such as knitting, dancing and bingo. The Leisure centres have signed up too, offering an extensive range of activity classes free with your seniors’ membership card.

The Festival kicks off on Tuesday 4th October at Age-friendly Belfast’s Be Prepared Event in the City Hall (10.30am -12.30pm). Everyone is welcome. They’ll be lots of stalls and activities highlighting great services and opportunities for older people. There’ll also be a chance to get your hands on a P.A.M. Programme.

ASDA DUNDONALD COLLEAGUES CELEBRATE ‘BIG ANNIVERSARY’!

Four colleagues from Asda Dundonald are celebrating a ‘big anniversary’ working with the retailer. Paul Loughlin has clocked up 25 years’ service, whilst Ivan Johnston, Elizabeth Johnstone and Rachelle Kelly are celebrating 30 years with Asda.

Along with 16 others from across Asda’s Northern Ireland store network, the four colleagues have been invited to join over 1,000 of their UK counterparts at the supermarket’s ‘Big Anniversary’ Awards in Stourbridge, West Midlands. The event will celebrate colleagues who have worked with Asda for 25, 30, 40 and 45 years and recognise their hard work and dedication to the business.

New George Best artwork a talking point in Belfast City Airport

n the 10th anniversary year of the famous re-naming of Belfast City Airport, local artist Paul Wilson has kindly donated a piece of art depicting George Best in his prime. Belfast artist Paul Wilson donated ‘Archangel’ to the airport, a digital print on canvas which is a copy of a piece Paul painted a few years ago. The piece has already been a talking point around the terminal, and was officially ‘unveiled’

Would you like to be part of a team providing a vital service to people in East Belfast?

East Belfast Independent Advice Centre (EBIAC) provides free, independent and confidential advice and information on a range of issues including welfare benefits, debt, consumer, employment and so on. We are currently looking for volunteers to help us to deliver our services. We have vacancies for volunteer Receptionists, Administrators and Advisers. We provide full accredited training, out-of-pocket expenses and child care expenses. Many of our volunteers have successfully used the training and work experience provided to help them to get back into employment. However, we are also happy to provide opportunities for those who feel they just want to give some time to their community. Our volunteers find being part of a small team providing advice services a very rewarding experience. EBIAC was recently awarded the Investors in Volunteers Quality Mark in recognition of our commitment to providing excellent volunteering opportunities.

“My son, Toby, is the elder of my two sons.

When he was born, he was an incredibly easy baby. It was after the birth of my second son, when life became more challenging with Toby. By this stage he was two years old.”

e was a “live-wire” and, being my eldest, I had no-one to compare him with. I just thought I had a ‘difficult’ child. During Nursery and Primary 1 and 2, there were constant issues regarding Toby’s behaviour.

He tended to be domineering and liked to be in control of situations. He had a tendency to “police” everyone. Some comments from his reports included: “We do encourage him to come and tell us if there is a problem rather than react himself which is when he would hit out etc.” “Toby can share, take turns etc, but will sometimes decide he wants something and just take it off another child. He understands why he can’t do it but just reacts without thinking of the consequences.” “Toby knows exactly what is expected of him but sometimes forgets.”

During Primary 2, Toby was put on a report card. This was due to constant low-level nuisance behaviour. Toby is a very intelligent child and has no difficulties in understanding, however, homework time used to be horrendous. Tears,

tantrums and a lot of fighting…..and that was just me! He especially disliked Literacy; having to write any amount at all. It took forever to complete tasks which were well within his capability. This was an issue in school also. His Primary 2 report said, “Toby should put more effort into his story writing and complete written tasks in the time given.”

After Primary 2, Toby moved to a new school.

Within the first few weeks, his teacher approached me to ask how Toby was with homeworks. She was finding that his concentration was poor and again, there continued to be behavioural issues.

He was up and down from his seat in class, he continued to ‘police’ other children, interfering where he should not have and finding it difficult to cope when he was not in control. Lining up was a classic ‘flash point’ as he was adamant that he should be first in line. Toby was also going through periods of obsessive behaviour relating to hobbies, interests and even friends. He was very disorganised and found it difficult to retain instructions. If I asked him to go upstairs to get his

shoes, he would invariably become distracted and forget to carry out the instruction.

He also reported that when he was reading, the words seemed to jump around on the page.

At this point, my husband and I decided to have Toby assessed for ASD. The diagnosis we received was “mild Asperger’s with elements of attention deficit.”

Toby was referred on to a children’s behavioural centre during which time we were asked whether we wanted to try medication for him. Our main concern was that Toby should fulfil his full potential in school and we felt that with the issues that were present, this would not be likely in the future. After much deliberation, we decided to put Toby’s name on the waiting list for medication.

Soon after, I became aware of a programme called Learning Breakthrough. I went online to investigate and liked the sound of it. At least there was no medication involved! I contacted Susan, the Director, and very promptly she contacted me to arrange a meeting with Toby.

My husband and I sat down with Toby beforehand and explained the concept and showed him videos and testimonials. We also explained in what ways it might help him. We asked him if he would like to give it a go but made sure he understood the level of commitment needed. He said he would like to try it.

We are now eleven months into the twelve month programme and life for Toby has very much improved. I have to admit that it hasn’t always been easy! There are days when he just does not want to do his exercises and on several occasions, Toby has questioned the benefit of doing the exercises. Because he cannot look in the mirror and see physical changes, it is difficult for him to comprehend the ways in which he has been transforming. It is only when we point things out to him, that he takes on board how Learning

Breakthrough has helped him.

In terms of school, he can remain seated in class, he does not ‘police’ others and his Primary 4 report said, “Toby always listens attentively and responds appropriately in class discussions.” His reading fluency has greatly improved also, as the words no longer jump around on the page.

I was also able to point out to Toby recently that he sat for forty minutes waiting for a school shoe fitting without any behaviour issues. He was blown away by this as again, it had not occurred to him that this was a by-product of his exercises.

Another huge area of improvement for Toby has been his ability to participate in sports training.

Having tried swimming lessons, rugby and hockey, it became clear that Toby could not concentrate or behave during coaching and we gave up on all of these sports. Since starting Learning Breakthrough, Toby has had a few swimming lessons during which his instructor said, “He’s a great wee listener.” Previously, Toby spent more time bobbing up and down in the water than listening to his instructor!

He has also joined a football club and his behaviour is exemplary! He worked very hard and made it onto the team after a few months, much to his delight!

We have just returned from our summer holiday and it is the first year I can say that we had a brilliant time, solely due to massive changes in Toby’s behaviour. He has changed so much in the last year. He still has his moments, but then he is an 8-year-old boy! I am so glad I heard about Learning Breakthrough. It does take commitment and time, but when you experience the results and see how your child’s life changes for the better, it’s worth every minute. Thank you, Susan.

Brian Richmond : My Story I have worked for the National Health Service (NHS) for over 20 years. In that time I progressed from a nursing assistant working in a long stay hospital for people with learning disabilities to support worker then residential worker in the community and on to becoming a Registered Mental Health Nurse.

In July 2015 I became aware of a new service in the community with the private sector called Craegmoor priory group. I have always been eager and enthusiastic about bringing people out of long stay hospital environments to a place they could call their home. I could see that Craegmoor had achieved this and I was keen to become a part of it.

Although before leaving my NHS Trust Job as a Community Psychiatric nurse (CPN) I had a bit of thinking to do. Such as; leaving a permanent position, a good progressive salary, years of paying into a superannuation pension and all the service years working across the health service Trusts.

However after researching and several discussions about the ethos, the standards and the opportunities and direction within Craegmoor my heart

and my head guided me to apply and successfully accepted an offer to become a deputy manager within the company.

Since taking up my new position in September 2015 I have remained excited and positive in the new developments ahead. I have gained valuable experience working across some well-established sites and being involved with the opening of a new development in Belfast. To date I am very impressed with the facilities and the living Environments created to support and care for people with physical health, learning disability, Autism and complex mental health needs.

SYDENHAM RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB Sydenham Rugby Football Club was formed in around 1900 but apparently had rather mixed fortunes financially over the years. They ran a number of fundraising events and at one stage the club president was a local figure, Captain James Craig, later to become the first Prime Minister of Northern Ireland. It looks like the player 4th from right in the front row is wearing a representative ‘cap’. Was he capped for Ulster? Like many local sports teams Sydenham RFC closed at the outbreak of WW2, and did not reform when the leagues recommenced in 1946. The gentleman to far right is rather snazzily dressed with a fashionable great hat, colourful socks and plus fours!

KNOCK RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB Knock Rugby Football Club played at grounds located at Hawthornden Road. This photograph was taken c.1910 and apparently one hundred and three club members served in the First World War and twenty eight were killed in action. The club ceased playing in 1939 and did not reform when the leagues were restarted in 1946. Bryson Robb (1st from left in middle row) was born in

1890 and attended Belfast High School. He was a member of the Robb family who had a large dairy farm at Dundonald and their name survives at Robb’s Road COOKE RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB Cooke Rugby Football Club was formed in 1910 principally from the members of a young men’s Bible Class belonging to Cooke Centenary Church on the Ormeau Road, Belfast. Some of its members were also former members of a club called Rosetta which folded in around 1908.

Cooke RFC played friendlies in its first year pending entrance into the Minor League.

Its second year was a very successful one during which it was undefeated and in 1913 won the Harden Cup. Cooke RFC won the Harden Cup again in 1923 and moved to play at Flush Park beside Rosetta National School. By 1927 Cooke moved again to play rugby at Galwally on grounds owned then by Methodist College with primitive changing conditions in the infamous ‘black hut’ and only the river at the bottom of

the hill for washing in. In the late 1940s extensive renovations were carried out with the installation of hot and cold water including showers. The outbreak of the Second World War meant that rugby was again suspended from 1940-42 and out of a membership of 53, Cooke lost 12 players killed in action. In 1991 Cooke RFC moved into their present home at Shaw’s Bridge.

MALONE RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB A group of residents from Malone Park met in 1892 to discuss the formation of a rugby club and the result was Malone Football Club, later renamed in 1932 as ‘Malone Rugby Football Club’. The club played at several locations in the Balmoral vicinity of south Belfast during its early years.

In 1936 Malone Rugby Football Club moved to premises at Gibson Park, Cregagh. The timber pavilion (pictured) contained two changing rooms, each with a communal bath, and survived until a new brick pavilion was constructed in 1968.

Shortly after the move from south Belfast,

the 2nd XV of Malone Rugby Football Club won the Junior League title in 1938, jointly with CIYMS. THE ‘POSSIBLES’ This is the ‘Possibles’ team in the final Irish rugby trial of 1976. In those days the Irish National side was chosen from a selection of players in the Inter-Provincial sides and the resulting White team were known as the ‘Probables’ and the Blue team (left) were the ‘Possibles’. The East Belfast connection is that Joe Miles, sitting 3rd from left 2nd row, played for Malone at Gibson Park, Cregagh. The team captain (holding ball) was Stewart McKinney from Dungannon RFC and Colin Patterson (front right) was an Instonian. All three Ulster players gained caps for the Ireland national team.

Also in the photograph are the familiar names of Tony Ensor, John O’Driscoll and Ciaran Fitzgerald. With the advent of Rugby World Cup and professional rugby in the mid-1990s the game in Ireland was re-organised and the system of Probables and Possibles was no longer required.

Aidan Campbell has previously published 11 East Belfast local history books entitled: Beaconsfield, Knock, Cherryvalley, Gilnahirk, Castlereagh, Cregagh, Stormont, Sydenham, Belmont and East Belfast Revisited Volumes 1 & 2. Newtownbreda is a local history on South Belfast. Aidan’s latest local history book is entitled ‘Belfast Through Time’. Aidan regularly gives illustrated talks to local groups and societies. Most books are available at Hillmount Garden Centre, Marie Curie Hospice and Hamilton News Cregagh with profits donated to local charity.

Are Your Feet Getting the Support They Deserve?

Experts agree that poor foot posture can be a cause or major contributor to foot pain, ankle pain, knee pain and even lower back pain and that a well-designed close fitting orthotic foot support can be a very effective treatment.

M

any patients attending our clinics complain that they have been given or sold orthotic foot supports which are either too uncomfortable to use or do not give adequate support. Some of these patients may have had casts taken of their feet for custom devices and may have paid large sums of money only to be disappointed with the results. One reason for this may be that in the past foot supports could be divided into two types.

The first is what are known as “Off the shelf orthoses”- As the name suggests these devices are made from generalised or generic foot shapes which come in different sizes. They are usually relatively inexpensive in the short term although because they are normally made from soft

materials they have a fairly short life span and this over time can make them expensive to repeatedly replace. Although they don’t fit the foot exactly they can be useful as a temporary stop gap. The second type of device is a “custom orthotic”.

Made by taking a cast of the foot and then using this cast to make a closely fitting support which has a life span in excess of 10 years and which should be more comfortable and give much greater support than the generic “off the shelf supports”. While initially expensive these devices due to their long life and close fit can represent a really valuable investment. In the last 10 to 15 years however a third type of orthotic support has come onto the market. These could be called

“Pseudo custom”. Casts are taken of the patient’s feet and sent to a manufacturer where they are scanned into a computer. The computer holds a bank of preformed profiles and shapes in its memory which it then matches as closely as possible to the casts. The finished device is sold as custom but in actual fact bears more resemblance in shape to the generic shaped “off the shelf orthotic”. Because these devices are sold as custom the patient is charged the full custom device price. Not fitting the foot closely causes two main problems 1) As the devices are made of rigid materials they can be extremely uncomfortable and 2) As they don’t fit closely they don’t control or correct the foot and in many cases can actually force the

foot into a worse position.

At the Northern Ireland Foot and Ankle Clinic we don’t believe you should be asked to compromise with your foot supports. This is why all our devices are fully custom manufactured in our own workshops by skilled technicians with many years’ experience. At our clinic we literally see dozens of patients who have been fitted with these Pseudo custom devices, they are very often disappointed and frustrated by the expense and the lack of a positive outcome. Ticking Along Nicely? Or Not? { GET TING TO THE HEART OF THE MAT TER } Your dog or cat’s heart beats away quietly inside their chest, already having pumped blood out around their body about twenty times just since you started reading this sentence. It is a truly amazing organ, but as we all know, if it goes wrong there can be quite catastrophic results.

WHY IS THE HEART SO SIGNIFICANT? Well, every cell in the body, including those of the brain, lungs, muscles and organs, require oxygen molecules in order to do their job. An animal gets oxygen molecules by breathing in air. Blood flows through the lungs and the oxygen from the air in the lungs attaches to the blood as it flows past.

When the oxygenated blood gets to a body cell that needs more oxygen, the oxygen molecule “off-loads” into the cell. The blood is now oxygen free and can flow back around to the lungs to collect more oxygen. All this can only happen if the blood keeps flowing, and the heart’s job is quite simply to function as a pump. All the blood coming back from depositing oxygen around the body flows back into the “....heart, filling the chambers as they relax (between beats). The“beat” of the heart occurs as the heart walls squeeze together to propel the blood onward to the lungs.

WHAT IS A HEART ATTACK? This is probably the heart problem with which we are all most familiar. The coronary artery (through which the blood supplies oxygen to the heart’s very own muscle cells) blocks up with fatty type tissue; the heart muscle cells are starved of oxygen and suddenly tire or stop altogether.

This is a result of what is called “coronary artery disease”. However, the “heart attack” is mostly a human problem, as our pets don’t tend to develop coronary artery disease.

SO WHAT CAN GO WRONG WITH MY DOG THEN? (Cats at the bottom of this article) Dogs often develop heart problems. All dog breeds can be affected and the effects are often debilitating. Two of the most common heart diseases are Leaking valves (often the Mitral Valve) and Heart enlargement (known as Dilated Cardiomyopathy {DCM}).

Leaking Heart Valves: There are valves in the heart which should close as the heart squeezes so that the blood which has filled the chambers can only flow forwards. If the valve leaks, some blood is able to flow the wrong way through the valve even when it is closed. This means that perhaps only 60% of the blood is flowing forward, leaving the heart struggling to be able to pump enough blood around the body fast enough to supply it with oxygen. Untreated, this progresses to coughing, tiredness, increased panting and death. Often as vets we will be able to hear a heart murmur (turbulence in the blood flow) early, before the signs develop and can discuss further investigation with you in advance of a serious problem developing.

Heart Enlargement: This is a problem especially in dogs with deep chests (compared to their tummys) eg Dobermanns, Boxers, Hounds, Spaniels, Collies, Labradors etc.

As the walls stretch outward they become tired and weak and do not squeeze as well as they should and the amount of blood they can push out around the body reduces. The electrical connections between heart muscle cells also become damaged within the stretched walls and the heart rhythm becomes erratic.

Heart enlargement can be a devastating disease for dogs, especially if caught too late.

Heart enlargement in the early stages cannot be detected at home and at a clinical exam at the vets we can pick it up only once we can hear or see the outward problems. Yet early detection is really really important in slowing down or stopping its development.

East Belfast Student Launches New App Belfast Student Samuel Gourley presents the app he built during the summer App Camp hosted by the Belfast flagship software company Kainos. Each year Kainos hosts an app camp with hundreds of university students applying in order to hone their skills in computer programming and software development.

Samuel said that he

Q.What happens to my Will if I get married, enter into a Civil Partnership or get divorced?

A. If you have a previous Will and get married or enter into a Civil Partnership after making that Will it becomes invalid. You can however make a Will specifically stating it is in contemplation of your union and that will ensure it remains valid. A divorce affects your Will in a different way in that the Will remains valid but any reference made to your former partner is in effect deleted and all other terms remain valid.

A. You should most certainly write a Will if you do not wish your family to inherit your property. Without a Will only your family, whether close to you or not, will inherit your Estate. This distribution is governed by the rules of Intestacy and will distribute your Estate between your next of kin in a specific manner.

Without a Will you cannot prevent your family inheriting. You may wish to include a charity which is dear to you who otherwise would be excluded without a valid Will.

Q. I recently moved address should I update my Will?

A. Your Will does remain valid following a change of address however if you have left a specific gift of your previous property to someone the gift will fail. Although you may not need to make any amendments to your Will we would always recommend reviewing your Wills after life events such as moving house to ensure your Will still contains all of the gifts and terms that suit your change of circumstances.

Q. I made a Will years ago is it out of date?

A. Will does not have an expiration date so regardless of when you made it the terms remain valid unless you have married or entered into a Civil Partnership since writing it. Keeping your Will up to date is as important as writing your first Will. Most people’s family life and circumstances change over time so it is important to keep a regular review of the terms to ensure they still reflect your wishes.

During his time at the MFA David’ s work took a different route and he began to explore institutional interior spaces where the work created an uncanny atmosphere.

He also created a series of paintings depicting hotel interiors which were mostly influenced by film. All of the spaces he paints are devoid of any human presence which leads the viewer to anticipate that something is about to happen or that something has just happened.

He uses photography as a point of reference for his work and has been influenced by contemporary painters such as Gerhard Richter, Luc Tymans, Wilhelm Sasnal and Peter Doig pushing the original photographic image into something more atmospheric, where the

ong considered one of our finest painters, Brian Ballard is a rich colourist interested in the contrasting colours and textures found in simple subjects. Painting directly on to the canvas with vigorous brushstrokes, he uses bold slashes of rich colour with fluid paint in which the bristles always leave a mark of their speed and pressure, yet they are subject to a structural order, as well as a pictorial depth. Brian still lives in his birthplace of Belfast, although he does enjoy spending time in his retreat on the island of Inishfree, off the coast of Donegal, where he looks for, and finds, the beauty in the ordinary things in life - a jug of flowers, arrangements of books, bottles and bowls - often painting them several times in different lighting or from a different viewpoint.

He is delighted to stage this one-man show at ArtisAnn, a new contemporary art gallery that is literally minutes from his home in East Belfast. His most recent body of work is titled ‘There is much yet to be done’ this is a series of paintings which highlight the barriers that are still maintained within Northern Ireland. These barriers include the ‘peace walls ‘ , gates at interfaces, army barrack walls, iconic murals and significant landmarks which continue to divide cultures and identities within the local communities of the North. Brian is a member of Royal Ulster Academy of the Arts.

His work is held in many significant public and private collections including: Ulster Museum, Crawford Municipal Gallery, An Comhairle Ealaion, Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Great Southern Hotels, Haverty Trust, Allied Irish Bank, Saltzburg Seminar, National Trust, Ulster Television, Belfast Education and Library Board, Royal Bank of Scotland, Waterford Wedgwood, Conrad International Hotel, the supergroup U2, Irish Intercontinental Bank, and the Office of Public Works, Dublin. This year (2016) he was awarded the Senior Artist Prize by the Royal Hibernian Society in Dublin.

halley Fine Art & Framing hosted their charity coffee and cake morning in aid of Hope House Ireland. Dawn Crother’s Aunt and Uncle are the founders of the charity and she produced a special ‘Hope the Snail’ painting which was turned into a print to sell for the charity.

There was a raffle on the day to win a framed one of these in aid of the charity and all proceeds of the sales along with proceeds from Stephen’s award winning chocolate carmel squares will help raise much needed funds.

The founders of Hope House Ireland are Roy and Dawn McConnell who have been married for over 30 years and have one daughter Leah.

In February 1990, at the age of 34, Roy was given the news that he had non-Hodgkin Lymphoma and was given a 30 per cent survival rate. After a year-and-a-half of chemotherapy, a bone marrow transplant and much prayer, Roy amazed the doctors when he fully recovered.

He was clear for 21 years. In February 2012 the couple once again were devastated to receive the news that the cancer had returned. A year later they were thrilled to learn that Roy was clear

of cancer once again. Then in 2015 Dawn was diagnosed with cancer. “I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and had to have a Mastectomy and 6 months of chemo. It was a hard blow to deal with as we had only just got HOPE House up and running, and I wondered how I was going to be able to carry on the work. I am so thankful to my family and the wonderful team of people who help me with the running of HOPE House. They helped me to stay focused and, because of them and the tremendous support of our loyal volunteers and fund-raisers the Lighthouse is still standing after the storm. I am through all the chemo and now clear of cancer and more determined and better equipped than ever, to help people Stand Up To Cancer. On behalf of Team HOPE, a great big ‘Thank You’ to everyone who has supported us on this journey.

It’s that time of year again, kids are going back to school, the sun is making less of an appearance and you may have started thinking about your comfy winter wardrobe and habits. Well James Robb, coach at the Fat Burning Factory is here to help you do things differently and healthier.

In my last article I provided you with tips and exercises to make improvements to your cardiovascular fitness and overall health. For those of you who missed it you can catch up on previous articles and exercise demonstrations by visiting the Fat Burning Factory Facebook page. So if you followed the previous routine you should have noticed a general increase in day to day wellbeing, easier breathing and your clothes may fit you that bit better. Now that you have a good base we can progress and target specific areas and the next part of the body that we will focus on will be your core. Certain images may come to mind when I mention the core but the good news is that it is not just having a six pack. The core is a pretty big component of your body that encompasses stomach, back and stabilizer muscles to give you a solid trunk to tackle most forms of exercises, improve your posture and day to day challenges in life. Improving your core can also help to alleviate back pain but if you do have any existing injuries remember to start easier and make allowances for that after checking with your doctor.

SO LET’S GET DOWN TO THE EXERCISES You will want to mix this core workout into your existing routine 1 to 2 times per week for now and this can be completed by anyone by changing times or slowing the pace to suit your own fitness level. Aim to complete 1 minute on each segment with 45 seconds of work and 15 seconds of rest before moving on to the next exercise. The exercises are Plank, Ab Crunch, Flutter Kicks, Up Downs and Squat Thrusts. When you complete 1 set take a short break and repeat the routine twice. Performing your core work and continuing with the cardiovascular exercises will escalate your fitness. Keep putting the hard work into yourself and you’ll soon see the benefits. MINDFUL MOMENTS [ #21 • O CTOBER 2016 / CLASS INNOVATION ] Year 13 students from Ashfield Girls’ High School in East Belfast started their new term in an original and innovative new way – with no classes!

Instead the pupils had an ‘Induction Week’ whereby they attended motivational workshops delivered

by Army Careers, Eye 4 Education, Belfast MET, SERC, Pathways Activity Adventures and Volunteer Now as well as in-house inspirational sessions delivered by teachers on time management, revision techniques, presentational skills and emotional intelligence. To

enhance the pupils’ wellbeing, they also participated in physical activities such as step classes and Mindfulness. Head of Sixth Year, Paula Doak, said, “Hopefully this unconventional start to a new term will provide the pupils with a range of knowledge as well as a wealth of practical strategies which will empower them as they embark on their A Level journey!”

Congratulations to Grosvenor Grammar School’s Senior Choir which was recently selected to participate in a recording of BBC’s ‘Songs of Praise’ from Orangefield Presbyterian Church, recordings for which took place on the evenings of Tuesday 13th and Thursday 14th September

he recordings took place on the evenings of Tuesday 13th and Thursday 14th September. This incredible opportunity arose when the BBC’s Stephanie McKee contacted the School’s Head of Music, Miss Rosemary Foster, in late August to invite Year 13 and 14 pupils from the Senior Choir to take part in a recording of the esteemed programme. Following a rehearsal on the evening of Tuesday 6th September the recording of the programme, which featured the performance of five songs on each night, afforded Grosvenor’s pupils the opportunity to perform with contemporary hymn writers Keith and Kristyn Getty, as well as their band from Nashville, who were completing their tour of their native province, having previously performed at the Waterfront Hall after literally flying into Belfast from the BBC ‘Big Sing’ at the Royal Albert Hall.

For the local performance at Orangefield Presbyterian Church, the Gettys led the singing of some of their own songs such as ‘In Christ Alone’ and ‘Facing a Task Unfinished’, as well as many more of their favourite hymns.

Of further note is the fact that the Musical Director for the programme was Jonathan

Rea, Chief Executive of the ‘New Irish Arts’ and Director of the ‘New Irish Choir and Orchestra’, as well as, most pertinently, the husband of Grosvenor’s own Mrs Gillian Rea, a Geography teacher within the school.

Particular thanks is extended to the twenty-two pupils from Years 13 and 14 who rose to the challenge so early in the academic year and impressed the BBC Producer on both nights with their creative harmonies, freshness of sound and immaculate behaviour in assisting to lead the congregational singing.

Sincere gratitude is also offered to a number of members of GGS staff, namely the aforementioned Miss Foster, as well as Mr Jonathan Arnold (Music), Miss Sandra Harte (Physics), Mrs Rebecca Simpson (Technology and Design), Mr and Mrs Andrew White (P.E.) and Mr Ross Mr Comiskey (R.S.) who collectively provided an impressive representation from Grosvenor.

We now look forword to seeing and hearing Grosvenor’s pupils singing the Getty worship songs over the coming months as they will be included in multiple ‘Songs of Praise’ programmes throughout the forthcoming year.

Moving Forwards Together at Leadhill [ #21 • O CTOBER 2016 / GROWING COMMUNIT Y ] Leadhill Primary School has had a really exciting start to the new school year, welcoming 140 children and their families into our community.

With a growth of more than 40% in the past 3 years, the pupils, parents and staff are excited to see news spread about what Leadhill can offer for families. Not only do we have a school where every adult knows every child, we also provide wrap around care and a pre-school playgroup providing both peace of mind and convenience to parents.

Looking ahead to the 2016-17 school year, we are excited to continue our work with Sustrans as we focus on encouraging sustainable transport to and from school. Our ‘Ditch the Dark’ event in October will focus on raising awareness of being safe when walking or cycling on darker days. We look forward to a bright and colourful spectacle as the children brighten up their coats and bicycles for the journey to school. This work on transport supports our continued project to raise awareness of impact to the environment as we work towards achieving our green Eco Flag. Musical events play a big part in the life of our school, and this year our choir and choral group are looking forward to singing in St Anne’s Cathedral in December as part

of the Action Cancer event ‘The Sound of Action’. Our choir will be very busy, with dates already booked for performances at Harvest services and Christmas Fairs. Children love to be in the limelight, and our little stars will get lots of opportunity to shine!

In October, we hold our annual Harvest Service in school, where we specifically invite Grandparents and older relatives to attend.

These extended family members are an important part of the lives of our children and the school. Following the success of our Digital Age project, we hope to continue to support parents and grandparents in becoming more confident in the use of technology, learning from our pupils in collaborative workshops.

O EVENTS GILNAHIRK PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH AUTUMN FAIR 2016 15th October @ 2pm

One of the most popular events in East Belfast is back for its annual bash The Gilnahirk Pipe Band will herald its opening at 2pm and Reverend Stephen Moore will officially open the Fair. In the main church hall will be a host of stalls including hand crafts, cakes, breads and jams, pre-loved handbags, toiletries, books and CDs and many others.

An auction will be held in this hall at 3.00pm.The Stye Brae Centre will host a range of activities for kids including toy and Lego stalls, games, tuck shop, face painting and craft for kids of all ages, while the Scouts and Sunday school will lost a range of exciting games for children of all ages. Fans of the Disney movie ‘Frozen’ can look forward to a very special guest, the beautiful Anna, who will be making a guest appearance and Marshall from

Paw Patrol will also make a guest appearance. Outside, the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service hope to attend with their Paramedi-kidz ambulance, where the youngsters can experience at first hand life saving equipment our paramedics use in real life emergencies.

Also outside will be a BBQ, plus an array of autumn plants, fresh fruit, vegetables and potatoes for sale and we hope for the PSNI vehicles for children to explore.

All proceeds from this year’s event will be shared with 3 chosen charities – Marie Curie, Barnardos and Presbyterian Church in Ireland United Appeal.

Young filmmakers will also be celebrated through showcases of new and upcoming film talent from across the UK and Republic of Ireland. The annual Cinemagic Mark Kermode Film Night returns for its twelfth year with Mark’s film pick being the Forbidden Planet.

East Belfast 05’s Have a Strong September

East Belfast Ladies fired themselves into Northern Ireland ladies football history books after their unbelievable league and cup double winning debut season in the NIFWA league.

E

ast Belfast Football Club was on the brink 4 years ago. Barley enough players to make 1 senior team things looked bleak.

However through severe dedication from various club officials the rise and glory from this Inverary Park based club has nothing of a miracle. In the last few years the senior teams have won 4 major trophies in the NIFL one of which being the coveted Boarder Cup. They now have a strong and well established academy with grassroots football for children aged from 6 right up to 16.But why stop there! The club committee decided to continue the growth and 18 months ago unanimously agreed to start a ladies team. They asked former men’s 1st team manager and UEFA A licence coach John Spence to manage this project. ‘’it was always going to be a challenging prospect’’ said John, ‘’ we were venturing into the unknown, some of these girls barley understood the rules of the game and couldn’t even take throw in’s at the start, we certainly had a huge task on our hands.

However what we did have was lots of girls with unbelievable character and determination, that excited me’’ Along with assistant manager Stephen Watters, John and the girls quickly got a ladies squad up and running.

Unfortunately missing the deadline the join the NIWFA in 2015 the girls had focus on training mostly with the odd

friendly game. ‘’missing the deadline for last season’s league registration was upsetting at the time, but thinking back may have been a blessing in disguise’’ John explains, ‘’it give us time to start from the basics, get a good sustained period of working on the girls fitness and during this period we were able to attract some experienced former league players who had falling out of way of the game for various reasons.’’

Entering into their first season East Belfast ladies had signed 25 girls. A wide range of experience existed in the squad and this was evident in the first 7 games losing 4 and winning 3. It was a chaotic start with the full list of signings being required at different times due to work and family commitments. ‘’we are a family club’’ Assistant Stephen claims ‘’ we have always wanted to create a family and community spirit in this group, my wife plays and we bring our own son to every session and match and other girls bring their kids also, whatever it takes to make time to meet up regularly’’ With this feel good factor oozing from the squad they attracted a few more marquee signings that was eventually to be the catalyst that would fire the ladies on a winning streak to glory.

After a narrow and difficult 3-2 home defeat at home to Belfast Celtic Ladies the girls knuckled down and their true character came to light. They went on a run of winning 8 consecutive games

firing themselves to brink of league and cup glory. 2 games from double success the ladies rearranged work and family life to fully concentrate on what could be a huge week in their lives. A league decider game at home to Chimney Corner Ladies on Aug 24th and a League Cup final at Seaview again v big rivals Chimney Corner on the 29th.

What a fairy tale week it ended up to be. Not without any drama. Going 1-0 down in the league decider at home the nerves had seemed to get the better of the girls. But a huge crowd at East Park, Inverary roared the girls home to a sublime comeback with centre back Trish Neil scoring the winner with little over 8 minutes left on the clock, ‘’it’s an unbelievable feeling to score the winner’’ Neil hailed, ‘’I’ve played every minute of every game this season and for it all to come down to a 1v1 with me and their keeper was so crazy, I was just so relieved to see the ball hit the back of the net’’ Another huge crowd witnessed the cup final scenes at the home of Irish League Champions Crusaders FC. A fitting venue for what was to be a champion performance from East Belfast.

Again, just for added theatrics for the onlookers, East didn’t make it easy for themselves, going in at half time 1-0 down to much more fired up determined Chimney side out for revenge. ‘’we had a good chat with the

Hamilton Attends British Ladies Amateur Open Strokeplay Championship

Economy Minister Simon Hamilton has attended the British Ladies Amateur Open Strokeplay Championship which is taking place at Knock Golf Club.

he Championship took place from 31 August to 2 September and entrance was free. Speaking at the Championship, Minister Hamilton said: “I am hugely impressed with the quality golf I have seen today. Events such as this continue to boost our golfing profile with golf tourism proving to be a key element in growing the Northern Ireland economy. Noelene Douglass doubled the lead volleying home a pin point perfect cross from Rachel Laverty.

East sealed the Cup double with a sublime solo effort from non-other than top goal scorer Shelly Stothers.

“Its an enormous personal achievement to be club captain of these girls, “states Kimberley Matthews, “I have a huge affinity with East Belfast FC with my dad managing the mens senior team. To emulate his success with these ladies is an amazing feeling ill never forget. I am delighted for these girls and all they achieved’’ quoted a gleaming John Spence, ‘’it’s a huge achievement to win any trophy in the NIWFA but to win the double in your first season is beyond belief, I truly believe these girls can go on create a huge history for themselves, their strength and belief is next to none and I’m proud of every one of them’’ The East Belfast Ladies end of season awards night is on October 1st at the Con Club. Then they go again early January aiming for more silverware.

We recently had the pleasure of helping to sponsor the East Belfast 05’s and results for the boys in September have been very good. Saturday the 10th saw them beat Glentoran 3-0.

Goalscorers were Gareth Ryan, Harvey Donaghy and Jake Seaton. Saturday 17th saw the team playing Lisburn Utd and again the boys won very comfortably with special mention to Gareth Ryan, Finlay Waring and Harvey Donaghy (below) all scoring hatricks.

The final game in September s against Castle Juniors A at the home pitch Inverary Ave. The boys finished the month in style recording another fine 4-1 victory. Gareth Ryan got another 2 with Dale Hoy and kyle Leighton adding the others. Next month sees the boys competing in both the 11 aside SBYL premier league and also the 9aside league as well.

Glens Slump to Defeat at The Showgrounds

A game of unequal symmetry, the proverbial game of two halves, as Glentoran slumped to this 4-1 defeat by David Jeffrey’s Ballymena United at the Showgrounds.

BALLYMENA UNITED 4 | GLENTORAN 1 Not the way Roy Coyle would have liked to have signed off in his latest caretaker role and, on this performance, the new manager has a job on his hands.

In horrendous weather conditions, it was the Sky Blues who created the first real opening, just two minutes in; Willie Faulkner dragging his shot across Elliot Morris’s goal, and wide of the far post.

At the other end, James Ferrin headed a Chris Lavery corner straight at keeper Alan Blayney.

Curtis Allen was looking lively up front for the Glens and on eight minutes, he fastened onto a Ross Redman pass, but Blayney was alert

to the danger, darting off his line to make the block.

Glentoran went close again when Jonny Smith’s searching pass seemed to present Lavery with a clear run on in on goal, only for referee Steven Taylor to surprisingly whistle for a none too obvious infringement.

Although still scoreless, the Glens were building up a head of steam and Blayney had to show his old class by pawing away Eric Foley’s 30 yard free kick. Striker turned defender Jonny Addis fired wide from the resultant corner.

RATHFERN RANGERS 1 | SIROCCO WORKS 3 SIROCCO Works sit proudly at the top of Division 1B, with five wins out of five after Saturday’s 3-1 success over fellow challengers Rathfern Rangers at the Diamond, Rathcoole. To be fair, it wasn’t the worst week to meet Rathfern, given that they had four players, Jimmy Douglas, Glen McCord, Josh Doyle and Philip Gordon all sent off the week before, against one of Tommy Kincaid’s former clubs, Barn United. The Newtownabbey side were also missing striker Paul Waite and midfielders Robbie Lee Crawford, Willie McMurdie and Stuart Crawford.

Sirocco boss Tommy Kincaid conceded, “It might have been a good day to meet Rathfern, but you can only beat what’s in front of you, and we could have won by more, after missing two one on ones with the keeper. But I’m sure they will be looking to have a good go at us when we meet at our place later in the season!”

Sirocco opened the scoring at the Diamond, when Kurtis Hanna stroked the ball past keeper Neil Lovell. On the turnaround, it was Hanna again, although Rathfern did narrow the gap, through left back Aaron Wright. Sirocco, however, soon restored their two goal cushion through Lewis Irwin, and could have been out of sight had Matt Stitt and Lee Ashe not been just a little too casual when straight through on goal; the midfielders missing the target on both occasions. Shorts climb up to third place in Division 1c following Saturday’s victory over bottom club Dromore Amateurs at Ferris Park.

It was the Amateurs who were first to strike. Back, though, came the visitors through Alan Jamison and Andrew Dummigan. Twoone then at the break and Shorts should have tightened their grip ten minutes after the turnaround, but Dummigan missed a penalty, after he himself had been brought down inside the box.

That was looking a costly miss when Dromore levelled matters on 75 minutes. But Shorts weren’t to be denied, restoring their lead courtesy of Daniel Orr ten minutes from time. As Shorts manager Lee Cathcart reflected afterwards, “It was close enough, but we’re starting to get a few players back which is making a difference!”

EAST BELFAST 3 | ABBEY VILLA 3

A last gasp Abbey Villa equaliser saw East Belfast drop their first league points of the campaign. East had to play the last 15 minutes with just nine men, after Craig Campbell and James Belshaw picked up injuries, with all three substitutes already on the field. Since our last edition, East have lost their grip of the Border Regiment Cup, beaten by Islandmagee and were knocked out of the Steel and Sons by Ballymena Provincial Intermediate League outfit, Glebe Rangers, who were in the Championship in the not too distant past. Stephen Robb had given the EastEnders the lead but goals from Dornan and Dalzell saw the Millisle side go off at the half way mark 2-1 up.

Parity was restored after the break when Luke Wilson was upended inside the box; Stuart Beattie doing the formalities from the spot. A Robb header had East back in front and that

himself, after being nicely fed by Foley. A minute later, nonetheless, Glentoran were in front, with that same combination unlocking the Ballymena defence; Foley ushering the ball through for Allen to slot past Blayney, for his 50th goal for the club.

It was looking good for the EastEnders, especially given their good recent record at the Ballymena Showgrounds, but they failed to turn the screw with Steven Gordon (twice), Lavery and Allen all squandering presentable opportunities.

Just past the half hour, Foley almost prised out another opening for Allen but his tempting cross was cut out by Blayney, with the striker lurking, ready to nod the ball home.

Yet there was a brief hint of things to come when Redman conceded a free kick on 33 minutes; Ferrin doing well to clear the danger, as Tony Kane swung the ball over.

Back on the attack, Jonathon Smith set up Lavery, but Jim Ervin’s intervention took the sting of the shot, allowing Blayney to save comfortably.

One-nil then at the half way mark, but the general consensus amongst the travelling support was that this

one should already have been done and dusted. As you’d expect, David Jeffrey managed to get some sort of reaction from his players; United came out fighting and it was ‘game on’ once more after just six minutes; Gordon losing possession in the midfield and the ball was played out the right to Ervin who brushed past Redman before crossing for Faulkner to head past Morris. The ball, however, rebounded back off the right hand post but, with the keeper slow to react, it was Ballymena skipper Allen Jenkins who bundled it home from a few yards out.

Glentoran almost bounced back five minutes later when Foley’s free kick was too hot to handle for Blayney, but there was no Glens player following up. Instead, it was the Braidmen who inched in front on the hour; Gary Thompson finding Cathair Friel who was afforded too much time and space, swinging the ball to the far post for Faulkner to head home.

It was the home side who had first strike, scoring from the spot after what looked like a rather harsh handball decision.

Orangefield found their answer when Ross Orderly’s free kick was bundled in by William Gracey. The Old Boys themselves had two plausible penalty appeals turned down in the second session, when Chris Dickey and then David Tittensor went down in the box. Its best wishes, too, for a speedy recovery to midfielder Daryl Finlay who had to come off with a shoulder injury. 8th Oct its back to the Cregagh Sports Ground for the visit of Paul Kirk’s Rathfriland Rangers in the Border Regiment Cup. On 82 minutes, Ballymena gained some breathing space. Aaron Harmon totally misjudged the bounce, leaving United with a 3 v 1 situation with only young Tiernan McAuley covering for the Glens, with Harmon desperately trying to back track. Friel stormed through, slipping the ball wide of Morris only to see his effort ping off the right hand post. As Thompson homed in on the follow up, he was barged over by Harmon.

An obvious penalty and while Morris guessed right and dived right, force overcame anticipation as Tony Kane’s able shot fizzed into the bottom corner. Five minutes later, Mr Taylor was pointing to the spot again; a little harsher this time, though it was probably the assistant who signalled for Marcus Kane’s handling aberration.

This time, both Kane and Morris changed sides, but the end result was the same – 4-1 and the game really was over for the visitors.

A one sided opening half, with the Welders by no means flattered by that two goal margin. Yet they couldn’t quite regain the same rhythm in the second session, as Breda came into the game more, forcing keeper Samuel Johnston into a couple of useful saves. At least, unlike Glentoran at Ballymena, the Welders managed to hold onto their first half advantage and were well worthy of the three points.

Bloomfield had already beaten Bryansburn 3-2 after extra time on that same ground in the Border Regiment Cup earlier in the season. Perhaps missing the organisational ability of the vocal Brodie Leeman at the back, Bloomfield were slow getting out of the blocks and it was Rangers who dominated the opening quarter. The home side came more into the picture as the half progressed, without troubling the visiting keeper.

The Bangor side showed the way, opening the scoring on 70 minutes. That was the prod Bloomfield shouldn’t have needed and they could have bounced right back had the Rangers keeper not pulled off an excellent save to deprive Michael Bowers, clawing the ball out of the top corner. Instead, it was Bryansburn who made sure with a second goal just before the close. Bloomfield manager Jason Elliott afterwards had, “No complaints, Bryansburn played well, they were hard to break down. On the day, if we had played to our strengths, we could have beaten them – but there’s a lack of belief at the minute. We were dropping deeper and deeper, almost waiting on the other team scoring!” Best for Bloomfield, left back Dean Moore.

This was one the Welders could have had out of sight in the opening quarter had they not been holding their own ‘crossbar challenge’, with Danny McKee, Michael McLellan and Chris Middleton both striking the frame of the goal. And when the Shipyardmen were awarded a penalty, after Ryan Deans was brought down inside the box, McLellan’s spot kick, true to form, smacked off the crossbar. Instead, it was left to defender Gary Spence to show the way, getting on the end of Karl Devine’s low corner. Yet the strange obsession of battering ball against crossbar wasn’t yet over, as Middleton once more tested the quality of the joinery, before getting it right in first half stoppage time, finishing off a McKee cross.

Orangefield Old Boys’ 50th anniversary

ORANGEFIELD Old Boys are fifty years young and to mark their anniversary a special dinner was held at Belfast City Hall.

Special guests included the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Alderman Brian Kingston; Mr David Martin, IFA President, the former President, Mr Jim Shaw and the Chairman of the Northern Amateur Football League, Mr Terry Pateman.

The club was formed in 1966, comprising of past members and teachers of Orangefield High School. They joined the

Northern Amateur League in 1970, achieving Intermediate status in 1987. Orangefield play their home games at the Cregagh Sports Club on Gibson Park Avenue, Belfast.

The First Team is managed by Gary Cunningham, assisted by Stephen Carlisle.

The Old Boys field four teams in total. As well as the First team who play in the NAFL Division 1A, there is Seconds in 3A , as well as two Junior teams, the under 18s and under 16s.
