he Artful Ageing toolkit, delivered by EastSide Arts and supported by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland Arts & Older People Programme, will provide a platform for conversations about being and supporting carers.

Working with local writer and arts facilitator Jan Carson and east Belfast sound artist Nick Boyle, the participants, most of whom had no experience in writing for radio, worked to develop, write, edit, perform and record two short pieces of drama about their own personal experience of caring for a loved one. The participants are carers of children, partners and parents and have cared for people living with physical and mental disabilities, Autism, Dementia and other complex needs.

The radio dramas and the toolkit will be available as a resource for carers’ groups throughout Northern Ireland. The downloadable pack will include the recordings of both plays

along with recommended frameworks to discuss the themes and issues raised. Also included are two quick writing exercises similar to those the group used during the 10-week project. The aim of the resource pack is to stimulate and support honest conversations about caring and the role of carers, and to enable carers to reflect upon the connections, interests and relationships shared with the person they care for.

#40 Radius Housing has hosted four tenant forums across Northern Ireland for those who live in their accommodation for independent older people

At these events awards were presented to tenants and schemes, recognising the best of independent living in the over 120 Radius schemes across Northern Ireland.

he final event was hosted in the La Mon Hotel, Comber which hosted over 200 Radius tenants and staff. Dean Crooks Fold, East Belfast scooped the Community Pride Award and the Healthy Living and Learning Award for their work with Engage with Age, Shaftesbury Bowling Club, Libraries NI and East Belfast Arts.

Maud Loughhead a tenant from McClay Fold in Bangor, hailed the ‘people’s champion by her scheme coordinator, was presented with the Good Neighbour Award and Forthriver Fold, Belfast was presented with the Outstanding Scheme Award.

Eileen Patterson, Director of Communities at Radius Housing said, “We were delighted to involve so many tenants in our annual tenant forums for our independent older people

and the annual Scheme Awards. Our tenants are active participants in the community and this is clearly evident from our Scheme Awards submissions.

We would congratulate everyone who took part and received Awards.

She added, “Staying healthy and living life to the full was the theme for our events this year. The Forums highlighted the benefits of living in Radius accommodation and included recitals and singing from local schoolchildren. This was followed by the Awards presentation and a tea dance and then finished with lunch.

“Our tenants remain at the heart of our business. Our tenant engagement programme, which includes our annual tenant forums, ensures that we listen to the views of our tenants and make sure that the services we deliver will meet their needs.

Victorian Gem Sparkles Again After £3.8 Million Refurbishment Before the opening, councillors, local residents, and a number of invited guests got a sneak peek of the new facility today to see first-hand how the listed building has been restored to its former glory thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF).

elfast City Council also invested £1.5m in the project and a contribution was made by the Friends of Botanic Gardens.Lord Mayor of Belfast Councillor Nuala McAllister officially reopened the Tropical Ravine by unveiling a plaque alongside HLF chair, Sir Peter Luff.

Councillor McAllister said: “This was a mammoth task and was more than three years in the making but I think when people come and see it for themselves, they will agree it has been well worth the wait.

“The Tropical Ravine is a unique asset for Belfast and has always been a

popular visitor attraction. Thanks to this spectacular makeover I have no doubt that it will continue to attract new visitors and will be a fantastic addition to our tourism offering.”

The listed building which dates back to 1887 has been restored with many of its original Victorian features reinstated and preserved.

The ravine has been split over two levels with an open reception area on the ground floor, and the building has been modernised to make it more energy efficient with new triple-glazed windows installed to retain heat and create the right environment for the tropical plants it is home to.

t. Dorothea’s Parish Church, Gilnahirk is holding its annual Summer Fête on Saturday 16th June starting at 2.00pm.

There will be lots going on with plenty of stalls, attractions and great live music to keep everyone happy. You won’t go hungry either with a BBQ, Crepes, Afternoon Teas, Ice-cream and a chocolate fountain all available to tickle your taste-buds. There will be plenty for the children to do including the Belfast Playbus, a craft corner for ‘make and take crafts’, a bouncy castle and loads of games. Tell them to watch out for our visitors from the Galactic Empire and they can also meet Captain Clean-up, Belfast City Council’s very own anti-litter super hero. There is a great ‘free to enter’ children’s competition as well.

The children will have lots of fun finding the letters to make up the name of one of the attractions at the Fête and every child that returns their sheet will get a little reward. Why not try your hand at “Have a Go Archery” and see if you can win the prize for guessing the number of balloons that can be squeezed into the Rector’s Car. Check out the great range of crafts in the big marquee and browse the stalls in the Main Hall. Plenty to keep you busy all afternoon. Don’t forget to get some ballot tickets on the day. There are lots of wonderful prizes to be won, with the fabulous star prize being 2 nights B & B and 1 dinner, for two people, in the Knockranny Hotel & Spa, Westport.

The fun to enter Dog Show is back again too, by popular demand. So, if you are the proud owner of a dog who fancies itself as a contender at Crufts, you don’t have to go quite that far to indulge their fancy. Bring your favourite pooch along and enter them into the Show and your little darling may end up winning the prize for ‘Best in Show’! Judging begins at 2.30pm.

DID YOU KNOW THERE IS A 7 MILE TRAFFIC-FREE ROUTE RUNNING THROUGH EAST BELFAST TO COMBER? The Comber Greenway is a popular route for commuters who want to walk or cycle to work, without having to use busy roads, and is easily accessible for many east Belfast residents.

t is also the focus of an EU-funded project being delivered by walking and cycling charity, Sustrans to reduce air pollution in east Belfast by encouraging more people to cycle to work. Sustrans is collaborating with leading cycling nations such as the Netherlands on a €4.4m CHIPS project (Cycle Highways Innovation for Smarter People Transport and Spatial Planning) to improve cycling infrastructure and encourage active travel. As part of this Sustrans has produced a handy new map, see insert, showing the Comber Greenway; how you can access it from many parts of east Belfast; and the numerous amenities and attractions along the route. It also lists cafes and retailers offering discounts through the Pedal Perks scheme for cyclists.

This fabulous public space is becoming a mecca for people who cycle as the location includes a Belfast Bikes docking station, bike repair station and Sustrans’ Active Travel Hub. The eye-catching Hub, off the Newtownards Road, is the base for the CHIPS project and is where a wide range of cycling activities are currently taking place and through the summer, from cycle training to bike maintenance classes. One highlight will be the brand new Belcycle festival on Saturday 16 June at C.S. Lewis Square – with lots of fun cyclingrelated activities for all the family.

Mark the occasion in true party style with face-painting, games, postcard and badge making as well as meet characters from that era on board.

Cycling Festival Set To Get Belfast In A Spin Belcycle is a family-friendly festival taking place on Saturday 16 June under the watchful eye of Aslan the lion at CS Lewis Square in east Belfast.

here will be bikes of all shapes and sizes to test ride on the day including tandems, cargo bikes, scooters, balance bikes and adapted bikes for those with special needs. Pick up advice and tips from local cycling retailers on bikes, clothing and accessories, as well as information on cycling adventures, holidays, clubs and events. Leisure and commuter cycling across the city has seen a remarkable increase in recent years due to improving infrastructure and new traffic-free corridors. More people than ever are recognising the health benefits of cycling and that it

is a convenient, often fun way to travel. To celebrate this rising culture, Belcycle will have something for the whole family to enjoy, from toddlers through to grandparents with a wide variety of free, fun pedal-powered attractions and activities.

Gordon Clarke, Sustrans Northern Ireland Director said: “Sustrans is all about encouraging everyday cycling and so we are delighted to organise this festival – the first of its kind in Northern Ireland. We know it’s going to be a lot of fun for all the family but we also hope it will challenge people’s perception of what cycling is and encourage them into the saddle. We know that 54% of Belfast residents would either like to start riding a bike or ride their bike more.[1] The main motivation for people is to improve their health but people quickly find cycling is convenient, cheap and an enjoyable way to get about.”

CS Lewis Square is the ideal location for the festival being where the Comber and Connswater Community Greenways intersect.

The square is also home to Sustrans Active Travel Hub an EUfunded CHIPS project that encourages commuters in east Belfast to try alternatives to the car such as public transport, or cycling and walking. Sustrans will be on hand to offer travel advice, route planning, cycle training and pedal powered activities such as a bike smoothie maker and paint spinner.

There will be bike maintenance workshops & demos, as well as PSNI bike security advice and tagging on the day. No festival would be complete without some tasty food and refreshments, as well as live entertainment, music and competitions to keep the whole family entertained.

Belcycle will run from 11am to 4pm on Saturday 16 June at CS Lewis Square, east Belfast. There will be provision of on-site cycle parking so you can come by bike and it is well connected to the city centre by bus from the nearby Newtownards Road.

Rosemary Baird Years spent volunteering with War on Want NI: 5 years Why inspired you to volunteer in the first place?

When I retired I really wanted to find something to keep me busy, so volunteering seemed like the perfect fit! I also think that volunteering is a great way to meet new people – we get lots of different customers through our door each day, so it is always new and exciting.

The Volunteers Behind Your Local War On Want This year marks an exciting new chapter for the organisation following its recent merger with fellow international development charity Self Help Africa which is based in Dublin.

C

ombining the organisations’ resources and common goals of helping to improve the lives of millions of people in Sub-Saharan Africa, the merger will see a total budget of £25 million for providing agriculture, nutrition and income development support for sub-Saharan countries including Uganda, Kenya, Zambia and Ethiopia. Located right on our doorstep, the organisation’s Cregagh Road store is one of the charity’s 13 stores located across Northern Ireland and has played an integral role in our local community for over 30 years. A treasure trove for clothes, brica-brac and books, the store has transformed over the years to be much more than just a charity shop, but also a hub for great friendship and conversation for

some of the store’s volunteers and charity supporters who have been the backbone of this thriving organisation since it was established in Northern Ireland in 1961. Celebrating the latest achievement for War on Want Northern Ireland – now Self Help Africa – we ‘re giving you an insight into some of the dedicated volunteers who have helped the organisation develop from strength to strength over the years through their commitment and passion for helping others. Rosemary Baird and Gail Mallaghan from the Cregagh Road store are part of a wide network of 200 volunteers throughout 13 stores in Northern Ireland who dedicate their time to ensure the charity thrives locally and in its African communities. Commending volunteers like Rosemary, Gail and the rest of the Cregagh

Road team on their work over the years, Self Help Africa Director Siobhan Hanley said at the recent unveiling of the new Self Help Africa shop front, “As an organisation which relies solely on the donations of time or money from the general public, we are incredibly fortunate to have such an amazing team of volunteers who support us every step of the way. We truly cannot thank them enough for their help over the years and their fantastic support for the merger with Self Help Africa, which is shaping a great future for the charity and our efforts to help those in subSaharan Africa. We are always delighted to welcome new volunteers interested in joining us in our efforts – even a couple of hours a week could make a big difference for the families and communities we work with.” added Siobhan.

Why did you choose to volunteer with War on Want NI? I’ve regularly donated to the Cregagh Store for many years, so there was a nice element of familiarity there. Another appeal for me was that as a small charity, War on Want NI has very little overhead costs and ensures that all of its donations go straight to helping those in need.

What have been your favourite parts of working with the charity?

Cregagh Road is a great shop!

Our store offers customers a great variety of items from brica-brac and clothing, to books and records, and they are always greeted by one of our volunteers’ friendly faces. The team are a delight to work with and make every day rewarding and fun.

What are your thoughts on the recent merger with Self Help Africa?

It’s great news – with Self Help Africa we have a stronger organisation which will be able to offer more to the communities in Africa.

Gail Mallaghan Years spent volunteering with War on Want NI: 7 years Why inspired you to volunteer in the first place?

I’d always thought in the back of my mind of working

in a charity shop. In my teens I volunteered with International Voluntary Services at Castle Ward and abroad in Switzerland and Norway.

Most of my family have done voluntary work in the past so it’s just a natural interest. I just think if you have a bit of free time, do something useful with it.

Why did you choose to volunteer with War on Want NI? I didn’t necessarily choose War on Want, although I knew about the organisation already. I was giving a friend a lift over to the shop one Saturday as her late mother worked there. When I went back to pick her up, her mum produced a volunteer form and encouraged me to fill it in. I was happy enough to do so and now here I am - seven years later!

What have been your favourite parts of working with the charity?

I really like the people who work in the shop. They’re a varied bunch that are willing to give their time and energy into working for the benefit of other people. There’s a core group of very friendly customers who always come in and I like to see and pass the time with them.

Some come in just to say hello, and it’s nice that they remember you and appreciate the time that volunteers give. I’m amazed sometimes at the amount of clothes that come in with the tags still on them, they’ve been bought and never worn, but at least they’re being donated and not going in a bin and into landfill. It’s opened my eyes to how wasteful I was, I regularly bought stuff and either just wore it a couple of times or not at all and then donated it.

What are your thoughts on the recent merger with Self Help Africa?

I think the recent merger has been a blessing for War on Want. It brings a great range of fresh ideas and resources which help strengthen the impact of our work.

Local Yummy Mummy Sheds Seven Stone...

Natalie Gordon from Dundonald was due to be married on January 13 to William Napier, her partner and the father of their two children Riley (6) and Willow (3). But the thought of having to find a wedding dress she wanted to wear and the realisation that her weight had ballooned to nearly 20 stone meant that the joy of dress shopping became a nightmare.

espite still wanting to marry, Natalie is glad that she put their long-awaited wedding day back.

“If William wanted to marry now I probably would as I feel so good, but I know that when it does happen, I will find the right dress for me,” says Natalie.

“I feel so fantastic now and am enjoying being able to go shopping as there’s so much choice. I don’t need to go into a plus size shop now as I can go into any shop now and find something an outfit that will fit me. The difference is being able to buy the clothes that I want to wear, rather than clothes I have to buy because they fitted me.”

Natalie is now a trim size 14 after joining Slimming World last April (2017).

She lost the weight after joining the Gilnahirk Slimming World club in east Belfast run by consultant Ashleigh Shaw, going from weighing nearly 20 stone to 12 stone 10 lbs for her height of 5’8’’.

For the 28-year-old, the moment she knew that her weight was out of control came when the zip of a size 24 dress burst as she got ready to go to a party.

After trying several times to lose weight before, it was her father who eventually spurred her on by his example.

“My dad Henry has a heart condition and is actually waiting on a heart transplant. He had lost three stone with

Ashleigh and the club earlier last year and had been encouraging me to go for quite a while.

“One day he took me out to buy me the dress as he knew I was feeling really down about myself. It was the only dress in the shop that looked good on me at a size 24. As I sat on the bed to put my make-up on, the zip broke and that was the moment when I knew that I had to do something my weight. I ended up going out in a pair of jeans and ended up coming home early as I just didn’t feel right and was totally miserable.”

While Natalie admits that she had always been on the larger side growing up, she felt that her weight really ballooned after having her youngest child Willow.

She says: “I had actually planned my wedding and was supposed to be getting married this year. But I cancelled it last year as looking for dresses was just too depressing at the time. I had to ring around ahead to the bridal shops to make sure that they had plus sized dresses as not many shops stock them.

Losing weight has become something of a family affair as her father does attends the same club, as does her mother Janeen. Natalie found that her own family relied heavily on takeaway meals as she was so pushed for time as a mum of two and working full-time as an activity therapist in a nursing home.

“

I’m confident that I will maintain the loss just by coming to the group. I would say to any new member, make sure that you stay for the group discussion as that’s when you get all the help and support, not just from your consultant but from fellow slimmers

by Slimming World, and I make my own chicken curry now. My favourite fakeaway is Taco Chips which I found on the website. It’s chilli beef made with 5% fat mince steak, Slimming World chips and taco sauce made with reduced sugar ketchup, extra light mayonnaise and low-fat natural yoghurt.”

Her partner William has also lost two stone as the result of Natalie’s healthy eating plan and making food from scratch.

“I love that the recipes are so family friendly, everyone enjoys them. I’m probably smaller than when I first met him. He now says that he never would have told me that I had put weight on as he would never hurt my feelings.

He knew that I needed to lose weight

but would never have come out to say it. I didn’t do any exercise at all apart from out walking with the kids when we holidayed at our caravan over the summer. I didn’t join a gym until last month but I’m still finding it tough to get the time to go there with having two children. I’m confident that I will maintain the loss just by coming to the group. I would say to any new member, make sure that you stay for the group discussion as that’s when you get all the help and support, not just from your consultant but from fellow slimmers.”

Slimming World consultant Ashleigh Shaw says that Natalie is a real inspiration to others. “People come to Slimming World for many different reasons. It’s not just about losing weight, it’s about finding confidence and I really look forward to hearing about Natalie’s future wedding day as she will be a stunning bride.”

Guide Dogs NI has a very clear mission – to help those people live the lives they choose.

The charity, which is based in east Belfast, has around 30 staff and 300 volunteers who work to provide a range of services.

The most wellknown is the famous guide dog. There are currently more than 100 active guide dog partnerships across NI

Guide Dogs NI Help people living with sight loss to live

A H

ll the dogs are bred at Guide Dogs’ National Breeding Centre in Leamington Spa in England. At around eight weeks old they are placed with volunteer ‘puppy walkers’ who raise them for approximately one year.

They then go to the Guide Dog Training School in Forfar, Scotland, where they undergo 16 weeks of ‘early training’.

The most suitable dogs for local clients are then sent to Belfast and undergo a further 10 weeks of ‘advanced training’, which includes refining skills like sitting at kerbs and waiting at doors.

Once ‘matched’ with an owner, the dogs and their new handlers undergo an intense two-week ‘class’ at a local hotel before being qualified as a partnership.

The charity offers other services for clients who don’t want or are not suitable for a guide dog. Orientation and Mobility Specialists provide long cane training and the My Guide service trains volunteers to become sighted guides. These volunteers help people get out of their homes and back into the community - whether it’s a weekly trip to the shops, a walk around a local park or a visit to the theatre. My Guide partnerships help service users develop confidence and independence, boosting

the lives they choose

physical and mental health.

Guide Dogs’ NI also has six Habilitation Specialists working with children and young people across the country.

Habilitation helps children reach their expected developmental milestones and learn about the world around them.

It helps them develop confidence and teaches movement skills such as reach, balance, grasp and posture through games and activities. Other aspects include teaching spatial concepts, like left and right, and important life skills like road safety and food preparation.

The team also works with partner charities Angel Eyes NI and Sense to run the unique ‘Family Focus’ project.

The Lottery-funded initiative is aimed at 0-4s and includes specialist playgroups across NI which are designed to support the whole family unit. Meanwhile Guide Dogs NI’s Engagement Team works with government and other stakeholders to ensure the needs and rights of people with visual impairments are catered for.

Current campaigns include challenging irresponsible pavement parking.

1. You don’t have to be totally blind to have a guide dog. In fact, most clients have some level of remaining vision.

2. It costs around £56,000 to support a guide dog from birth to retirement.

3. Not all guide dogs are Labradors. Most are crosses between Labs and Retrievers, with a small number of German Shepherds and other breeds like Poodles.

4. A guide dog is not a sat nav! It’s up to the handler to lead the route and decide when it’s safe to cross the road.

5. Around 80% of a child’s learning happens through vison. Imagine how much more challenging reaching development milestones is for a child with no sight.

8. There a lots of different types of canes. The best known are probably the symbol cane and the long cane. The symbol cane is just that – a small white stick which is carried in the hand to alert other people to your visual impairment. The long cane is the only type used as a mobility aid. It’s swept in an arc in front of the person to detect obstacles in their path.

Update on Alabama Rot: 29 Cases Already in 2018 Alabama rot is now sadly being confirmed in dogs across the country every single week.

The disease has been recorded throughout the UK and Ireland for about 6 years and cases seem to be increasing in number It is not known what the cause is, but there is a possible link to an environmental factor, perhaps in wet and muddy areas.

A

labama rot damages the blood vessels supplying areas of the skin and the internal parts of the kidney.

Multiple clots form, cutting off the blood supply to affected areas.

In the skin this causes unexplained ulcers and sores, particularly on the legs and feet. In the kidney, it leads to severe kidney failure. Although occasionally dogs survive, the risk of the disease proving fatal is very high.

Early detection and veterinary treatment is vital. The disease has been recorded throughout the UK and Ireland for about 6 years and cases seem to be increasing in number. In

the last few weeks, a case has been confirmed in Downpatrick.

It is not known what the cause is, but there is a possible link to an environmental factor, perhaps in wet and muddy areas. We recommend avoiding very wet muddy areas when walking dogs and washing dogs down after getting wet mud around their legs and feet.

A new addition to the East Belfast’s urban art

Two new pieces of street art have been unveiled by EastSide Partnership as partnership of the

EastSide Urban Gallery project funded by the Urban Villages Initiative in east Belfast

nternational street artists Nomad Clan, one of street art’s finest female duos, installed ‘Linenopolis’ at the pocket park on Tower Street/ Newtownards Road. The pocket park was a derelict site until it was developed in 2011 by EastSide Partnership. The street art replaces the original canvas flax flowers artwork by Deirdre Robb, which deteriorated from the wall in recent years. Nomad Clan drew inspiration from East Belfast’s rich linen heritage and ‘year of the woman’ to create a dream-like design featuring a modern woman resembling a female flax gatherer.

Belfast based artist Friz installed ‘Winter’s End’ at Townsley Street, overlooking C.S. Lewis Square. The Narnian inspired mural depicts the end of the White Witch’s reign and

The Urban Villages Initiative is a key action within the Northern Ireland Executive’s ‘Together: Building a United Community’ Strategy. The programme aims are to foster positive community identities; build community capacity and improve the physical environment. The Urban Villages Initiative helps to create thriving places in five areas across Belfast and Derry/Londonderry and together, are making a difference.

7 Legend A new play about George Best at the Strand Arts Centre in East Belfast will give audiences a reimagining of the turbulent weekend footballing legend George Best spent in the Islington flat of Irish actress and intimate friend, Sinead Cusack, in 1971.

NEW PLAY SHINES LIGHT ON TURBULENT WEEKEND IN LIFE OF GEORGE BEST Hello Georgie, Goodbye Best was co-written by and stars 27 year old actor Robbie Martin from Greenisland and 23 year old Rafaela Elliston from North London.

The pair met at drama school and came up with the idea for the play together.

G

eorge, who was dropped from the Manchester United team for missing training, unbeknownst to anyone journeyed to London regardless and paid a visit to Sinead Cusack. The play looks at the time spent in her flat and their relationship that was put under great strain after George’s whereabouts were discovered. Hordes of press and adoring fans mobbed the flat, entrapping them both there for three days. Although a great deal is known about Best, ‘the footballer with magic in his boots but a self-destruct button in his soul’, people can only guess at what really happened inside the flat. For George, who was football’s first ever major icon – known as The Fifth Beatle – we see an insight into his ‘fish-bowl’ lifestyle, only one year before he quit professional football as it all became too much. Through Sinead, we realise the tragedy of George’s life; while she is an actress on her way up, he is a footballer on his way out far too long before his time. Hello Georgie, Goodbye Best offers us a candid lens depicting what happens when you take two young adults out of Ireland and violently expose them to publicity.

Robbie Martin recalls how the role of George Best is one he has felt destined to play: “When I was living in Belfast, there was talk of a biopic being made about George Best and I

was one of the hopefuls linked to the project. Nothing came to fruition with the film and I subsequently moved to London to train at drama school where I met Rafaela.

“After we graduated in 2017, we both had agents but weren’t really getting any auditions. After a trip to the Edinburgh Fringe we saw a one man play about Frank Carson starring Belfast actor, Dan Gordon. This made me think we could do something about George. It was going to be a one man play but then while we were doing our research we came across the incident in 1971 when he got trapped in the flat for three days. Rafaela was perfect casting for Sinead Cusack, so we decided to start going with that idea.

“The interesting thing about George is that he is a flawed genius. His life is like a Shakespearean tragedy and for me it’s finding out why the likes of George and many other Irishmen have that self-destruct button – are we wired differently in Northern Ireland?

A lot of people think they know Besty – alcoholic, womaniser – but I think this play illustrates the issues he was dealing with at the time and why he made so many bad choices.

“We know exactly what happened before and after the events based on autobiographies and TV footage, but with regards to what happened in the flat no one knows. All we had to go on was that Sinead said that George

was distressed and upset. We carried out extensive character studies on both and we think the play is a good illustration of what they were like at that time. “After finishing the play we sent it around the contacts I had in the industry and got good feedback. We were chosen as part of the inaugural John Thaw initiative at the Actors Centre in Soho to workshop the play in February. We sold out and it was useful as we’ve made some changes

based on audience feedback.

“We preview in a fringe theatre in Camden in April then open at the Strand Arts Centre on 22nd May for three nights before taking the show to Edinburgh. We’re donating ticket sales from the first performance at the Strand to charity. Three years ago my dad John died of pancreatic cancer and since then my family have raised money for the Centre for Cancer Research at Queen’s.”

On Sunday 29 April, the club gathered to celebrate their victories with the annual prize-giving ceremony In February 2018, the club won the Ulster Rapidplay Team Championships in a field with over 70 of the top players from all across Northern Ireland. Then in April 2018, the teenage team of Strand 3 won Division 4 of the Belfast and District Chess League. This was followed a week later by the primary school team of Strand 4 winning Division 3!

E A ST BE L FA ST Through Time I was travelling around East Belfast recently and was struck by numerous renovations and how our built heritage keeps changing.

Sometimes the transformation is significant and sometimes less obvious. As an old boss remarked to me many years ago ‘One thing we know for sure about the future is that it will not look like the past’.

1. ‘Beeches’ Farm / Ulster Hospital The Kirkwood family had owned ‘The Beeches’ dairy farm (left) since the early 1800s. It extended to over 70 acres in Ballyregan townland, Dundonald. The farmland was sold as the site for the new Ulster Hospital in the 1950s and opened by the Duchess of Gloucester in 1962 who described the new buildings (right ) as strangely ‘not only of functional excellence but also of distinctive beauty’. The old ‘Ulster Hospital for Children and Diseases of Women’ was based at Templemore Avenue in East Belfast but had been destroyed by the Luftwaffe during the Blitz of 1941.

2. Cherryvalley Village Fred Hurley’s father was a wealthy tea merchant who lived at a big house called ‘Beaconsfield’ on Knock Road. In the summer of 1895 young Fred’s birthday present was the very latest photographic technology, a halfplate camera with tripod. He took this photograph of ‘Knock Village’ which was the original name for Cheryvalley later made famous by local comedian James Young who joked about the genteel ladies who lived at ‘Cheeryvallee’. Notice the Belfast City boundary post at the Knock River bridge and wee bantum hens running across the Gilnahirk Road.

3. Knock Railway Station / Comber Greenway The BCDR line reached Knock in 1850 and a stopping place at this location was known as Ballycloghan Halt (Irish: ‘townland of the stepping stones’) and later as Knock Station with brick station buildings constructed in 1895. The BCDR was closed in 1950 after 99 years and 11 months in business.

The railway track bed is now a 7 mile long cycle and footpath called the ‘Comber Greenway’. Everything in this 1940 view of Knock station is now gone except just to the left of the steam train is the chimney of a house on King’s Road which survives to the present day.

4. Beaconsfield / Marie Curie Hospice Beaconsfield was a big house situated on the corner of Kensington Road and Knock Road. It was built during the late Victorian period in 1869 by a wealthy insurance agent called Joseph Millar. The last resident of Beaconsfield was Miss Alice Maud Crawford (one of the Crawford’s of Crawfordsburn) who lived there from 1935 until her death aged 94 years old in 1960. The Marie Curie Memorial Foundation bought the house and extensive site and opened Beaconfield Nursing Home, now the Marie Curie Hospice, in 1965.

5. Cregagh Village An electric tram is parked at the terminus at the top of Cregagh Road in 1910 where it meets the Hillfoot Road. Horse drawn trams reached this suburb of Belfast in the 1890s when the area was known as ‘Cregagh Village’ (Irish: townland ‘The Rocky Place’) and it consisted of grand middle-class housing which included Downshire Road, Everton Drive and Cregagh Park. Electric trams were opentopped initially and then fitted with top covers for protection in wet weather. But it was decided that the trams should have open cabs because it was believed this was healthier for the drivers.

We’re a school for children and young adults with severe learning difficulties. Once the students reach 16, it’s all about preparing them for life beyond school. We want to empower them for their journey into adulthood. Pupils go in one day a week for four weeks. Sharon buddies up with them, and they spend the day on a range of departments, finding out more about what colleagues do, and giving them a hand with tasks.

It’s been a real success and we’re hoping to extend it to other stores in the area.”

Pupil Conor McSherry, who has autism, is currently on the scheme at the store. He said: “I’ve really enjoyed it. I’ve been shown how the tills work and got involved in stacking the shelves too. Everyone has made me feel really welcome.”

Conor’s dad Con said: “He loves Asda because they don’t treat him any differently to anybody else.

“Conor’s bright, polite and helpful and the work experience has helped his confidence. We’re regular customers at the store and it’s just been great for Conor.”

Sharon said: “This has been the most amazing thing I’ve been involved in during my time at the store. All of the students have a great attitude and I have a real laugh with them. It’s humbling to see them make the most of this opportunity.”

Cinemagic’s ‘Making the Move’ Project Helps P7’s

The project uses the skills gained from film making, film reviewing and mindfulness to address and alleviate any fears Year 7 students may have about making the transition to post primary education.

ix schools across Belfast are taking part in the project. These include Malvern Primary School, Holy Cross Girls Primary School, Inchmarlo, Knockbreda Primary School, Seaview Primary School and Strandtown Primary School.

Approximately 30 students will take part from each of the six schools. The Making the Move project includes a two-day filmmaking workshop. Under the guidance of industry professionals the transition year students will use iPads to produce short films that express their feelings about the move. These short films will be screened at the end of the programme.

The event was to confer the Freedom of the City of Belfast to President Bill Clinton and Senator George J. Mitchell.

elfast City Council notably honoured the prestigious Freedom of the City title to the former US President and the Senator on the 20th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement; for their enduring contribution to the peace process of Northern Ireland. Students from secondary schools read poems and works of their own, including Elena reciting her award-winning entry at the momentous occasion. Elena was awarded runner up in 11-14 years category of the British Council’s Commonwealth Schools creative writing competition. The 1,500 entrants came from 53 countries, submitting moving and thought-provoking stories on the theme of peace. Elena was presented with her prize at the Peace and Beyond Conference, held at Belfast City Hall. Nicola Connery, Principal of Strathearn School said – ‘We are delighted that Elena was invited to read her work at the landmark event, and to have met two historical figures which made such a difference to the future of Northern Ireland. Her essay reflects a beautiful insight into a young person who has fortunately lived through peaceful times in her own country, however has the awareness of conflict in other countries throughout her whole life.’ Nicola adds – ‘Her work has been inspirational to her fellow students who are encouraged to express themselves creatively and to be proud of their personal accomplishments.’

n Monday 7th May a team of Mums and Dads from Dundela Infants School will be taking part in the 37th Deep RiverRock Belfast City Marathon Relay. Carly Harkness, Penny Toogood, Lisa Evitt, Andrew Toogood and Ross Neely, will be hoping to complete the 26.2-mile distance in a team effort to raise funds for the PTA. The team has been kindly sponsored by local Estate Agents and Property Managers, Stewart & Co., located on the Belmont Road in East Belfast. “We are really excited to be taking on the challenge of running in the marathon and are hoping for a great day. We want to encourage the whole school community to support us in our fundraising. 1% of those recently surveyed by IKEA said they feel confident enough to express their personality within their home. However, those who were not so confident when it comes to decorating gave reasons such as not knowing how to include colour and patterns in the home that suit their style (64%) and not knowing what is on trend (10%). This comes as IKEA sees continued popularity of white and beige products and textiles throughout the UK, with 70% of NI homes using such muted tones to decorate.

IKEA is now helping those who are curious about colour and particular about patterns to find out their personal every day style and bring it into their home, simply and affordably, using textiles.

Ingredients _ 500g Turkey mince 2 Tbs Teriyaki sauce Ginger Garlic 2tbs Peanut butter or almond butter Mushrooms Peppers onions Little gem lettuce Tomatoes 0% Greek yogurt

1: Brown Turkey Mince with ginger, garlic and 2 tbs teriyaki sauce, add 2 tbs of nut butter and 100200ml hot water.

2: Sauté peppers, onions and mushrooms with garlic, ginger and 1 tbs teriyaki sauce.

Ingredients _ Base 200g oats 60g vanilla protein/ @kin_ nutrition 3 tbs chia seeds 50g melted coconut oil 4 tbs powdered peanut butter 200ml Water _ Fudge 125g dates 125g prunes Hot water 30g cacao powder

3: Layer cooked veg into little gem lettuce leaves with the nutty turkey mince.

1: Mix the base ingredients to a think paste like texture. Add more water if needed. Spread into the bottom of a tray bake tin.

4: Serve with greek yogurt and fresh tomatoes.

2: Add the fudge ingredients into a bowl and leave to sit for 10-15

mins. Then Blend until smooth.

Spread on top of the base.

3: Cover and leave in fridge for 2h. Sprinkle with cacao and peanut powder.

Often our first thought when considering sunglasses is appearance, but what is more important is how they fit.

Sunglasses need to fit your face well, to be effective at stopping UV light and to give your eyes and the sensitive skin around them, full protection. I recommend having them professionally adjusted to fit, to make sure that they sit comfortably on your nose and ears.

Always check they have the CE mark to comply with current standards.

Should I get polarised lenses?

Polarised lenses usually cost a bit more than standard tinted sunglasses lenses. This is because they offer more, as the polarising filter means that they are truly anti-glare lenses. They have traditionally been regarded as the best lenses for use around water and are popular for sailing and fishing, but they also offer great glare reduction for drivers and are worth the extra premium.

Do photochromic lenses make good sunglasses?

Photochromic lenses are the lenses that go dark in sunlight. They are especially useful if you are generally light sensitive or if you prefer the convenience of lenses that darken automatically to having to put sunglasses on and off. However, they are not the best option for driving as most photochromic lenses do not react fully inside the car.

How should I look after my sunglasses?

Ideally sunglasses should be kept in a hard case when not being worn. This protects the lenses and ensures that they do not get squashed. Scratched lenses do not offer full UV protection so just leaving them on the car dashboard or slipping them into a hand bag or pocket are all ways of the lenses being damaged.

Warming up your hair with highlights can add some colour and interest to your locks and your face, If you’re more medium-toned, you can add more colour to your hair, such as a golden hue, beigeblonde or even a light blonde. Just be sure to maintain some warmer tones to match your skin.

For darker skin tones, lifting hair a few shades than your natural hair colour, sticking to darker blonde shades. Blended Caramel or golden highlights can be beautiful on this skin tone.
