ANNUAL REPORT OF PHILANTHROPY 2015-16 UNDEFEATED TEAM MAKES THE HEAD OF SCHOOL PAY THE TAB--AGAIN! Our 2015 middle school boys’ soccer team was undefeated in its playing season, earning them dinner with the Head of School. Director of Philanthropy and MS Boys Soccer Coach Alex Ramsvig is looking forward to another successful season in 2016.

RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE Another first for LTS: on April 14, in a collaboration of our chapter of the National Honor Society and the United Church of Dorset and East Rupert, LTS hosted the American Red Cross for a community blood drive. Students, faculty, staff, parents and community members donated. ARC account manager Rich Dow said, “For a brand new drive, we set a modest goal (19) and sent enough staff to comfortably collect that number. Thanks to the time and effort you all put in, we were able to collect an astounding 30 life saving gifts! You are the talk of the town right now in the Burlington office!” Obviously, we will be hosting more blood drives this year!

10 brand new Schwinn bicycles and 20 helmets were awarded to LTS for our annual participation in the National Walk/Bike to School Day in May. Students in Courtney Callo and Hakan Brosnan’s biking E-Class assembled the bikes.

Three Long Trail students were awarded first place in their categories at Vermont History Day last spring and went on to compete at the 42nd annual Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest on June 16 in Maryland.

WE CELEBRATE SUCCESSES EVERY DAY…AND YOU HAVE MADE THAT POSSIBLE! Dear members of the Long Trail School family, Each day, there are cheers and congratulations as students achieve, teams accomplish and artists excel. Hallways reverberate with the sounds of excitement and enthusiasm. Long Trail is truly a dynamic and vibrant environment in which children engage and grow. Take a peek in our classrooms: students are active in their own progress and are learning how to think creatively, how to tackle challenges adeptly, and how to live responsibly with consideration for themselves and their communities. Long Trail has much to celebrate: from an interactive middle school curriculum which supports these students’ development to Vermont’s only International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme in grades 11 and 12, an exceptional Fine and Performing Arts curriculum, individualized college guidance starting in 6th grade, sports opportunities for athletes to learn, grow and achieve and a recognition of the value of travel and international experiences. Mindful of our resources, we do as much as we can with what we are given by this supportive community. We thank each donor, each family, each friend, each business, and each company who was able to assist the school this year. We are incredibly grateful for all of your efforts in support of this unique and wonderful school. Sincerely,

Steven Dear, Head of School

SPOTLIGHT ON FACULTY Long Trail is truly fortunate to have the remarkable and dedicated faculty and staff that it does. From dawn to dark and then some, these folks innovate, create and devote themselves to the optimal experience of Long Trail students. Two women who embody that dedication and passion for excellence are Colleen Fiore, the 2016 Dorothy Peirce Faculty Award winner, and longtime employee Chelley Tifft. COLLEEN is a stalwart advocate for recognizing each student’s strengths. She is celebrating her 20th year at Long Trail. As Director of Support Services, she not only helps families transition to LTS but also works with teachers to assist students’ acquisition of information. She maintains a great balance of work and movement as you will find her leading a group of walkers in E-Class. A Francophile indeed, she is eager to speak French when not working in English.

So many aspects of LTS are influenced by CHELLEY’S work. Currently the Communications Coordinator, she has been at LTS since 1998. As such, she puts together all manner of school publications, advertising and online information. She helps to advertise and organize events for the school community. She is responsible for LTSummer and also for the School Store, but some families know her from her former position in LTS Admissions. Chelley lives Long Trail both here and at home: her husband Dana (Director of Transportation and Facility Manager) and daughter Charleigh (8th grader) commute with her every day!

SUMMER RENOVATIONS Look around! We have changed some areas on campus: LANDSCAPING REDO The campus greenery has changed. This summer, Homestead Landscaping made some adjustments to the green spaces on the field side of the classroom building. Some plants were removed and others were pruned back in an effort to create greater visibility and renew the beauty of the lawns around campus. ART ROOM EXPANSION Hakan’s Hall has been christened! The previously unused attic space behind Anharad’s classroom has been transformed into a rectangular room or “hallway” to be used for more art endeavors. Stop up and check it out!
