Dear LLA Family, Alumni, and Friends,
In August of 2022, LLA embarked on a new TK-12 initiative for teaching innovation and technology. While we have taught technology for many years at all levels of the TK-12 campus, this initiative is designed as a cohesive TK-12 Innovation and Technology program. Throughout each student’s journey at LLA, they will learn skills in technology and use design thinking to apply their knowledge to solve real-world problems.
Recent updates and changes on our campus are a direct result of this initiative. The elementary and high school computer labs have been renovated, and a new Junior High STEM Wing is now ready and buzzing with students. These changes to the physical plant have been made to accommodate the needs of a program that is focused on coding, 3D printing, and elements of design, all within a culture of collaboration, and project-based learning.
These changes were made possible by the generous gifts of our donors through the LLA Impact Fund, as well as other donations.
The new Junior High STEM Wing provides new lab and classroom spaces for math, science, and technology classes. We have secured a loan and have received some initial funding through donations, and we are looking for partners to help alleviate the cost of this essential $5.5 million project. If you are interested in joining this exciting journey and making a gift that has an impact both now and for future generations, please read through our naming opportunities at www.lla.org/jh-stem.
Thank you for believing in LLA’s mission and for making an impact on the education of our students. Your support has been essential to our success.
We are excited to see how God will lead in 2023-2024!!
Sincerely,
Iveth Valenzuela, Head of Schools

$155,000 for Technology, Innovation & Design Thinking, TK-12
Our annual LLA IMPACT FUND drive raises funds for special projects that enhance learning for our students.
In October of 2022, we kicked off our campaign to raise $155,000 to help TK-12 students prepare for their future through Technology, Innovation & Design Thinking. Thanks to all of our donors who helped us reach our goal. The funds supported the remodel of the Elementary Innovation Lab and provided for new STEM Resources for the Junior High, and renovations at the High School to provide a new space for teaching technology, innovation and design thinking.
Elementary — Renovation
LLA began the remodel of our elementary computer lab on March 27th. The NEW, space includes a Promethean, 3D printers, and many resources for coding and design. There are five stations around the room, each with touchscreen computers. Students can learn about circuitry, robotics, coding, CAD design, and more. Lessons will prepare students with foundational, prerequisite skills that further technology and innovation for junior high and high school.
Junior High — Resources
As a result of the IMPACT Fund, eight Microscopes will be purchased to use at our
new lab stations. We will also be purchasing several Arduino Student Kits. Our students will learn the basics of programming, coding, and electronics includ ing current, voltage, and digital logic.
The Microscopes and Arduino Kits will be a great resource. Our students will gain confidence in programming and electronics with guided lessons and hands-on experimentation.
High School — Renovation
Rhoads Hall underwent renovations for the August 2023 school year. Thanks to all our donors, the new Innovation & Design Thinking classroom will create space, resources, and equipment such as Arduino Circuit Board with sensors, Ozo Bots, Coding, and 3D printing. Students will be using MacBook Airs for learning and doing projects. There will be two large TV monitors, and Promethean Board as a teaching tool for teachers and a presentation tool for students. Students research, test, learn advanced coding, and produce a prototype, then refine it until they find a working solution to the identified problem.
A Technology & Design Thinking class will set a foundation for our freshmen. It will serve as a springboard for learning technology with advanced coding. Students in 10th or 11th grade can continue to pursue the Technology Innovation Engineering (TIE) program for 2 to 3 years.
THANK YOU!
You helped us reach our goal of $155,000. Your support helped LLA fund Innovation & Technology Initiatives.

Sensory Activities are Fun!
Cup stacking helps children develop hand-eye coordination and small motor skill.
Experimenting with the water cycle, provides an opportunity to practice sharing space and working cooperatively.
Elementary
The Elementary had a great year with several highlights. On January 31, the Elementary celebrated 100 days of school. Students showcased their creativity by staking 100 cups into a pyramid, 100 circles of dots, bringing 100 food cans, and dressing as 100-year-old people.
1st grade attended Loma Linda University’s annual Health Fair for young children. Students were able to have hands-on learning activities in a medical setting.
Grades 4-6 students were challenged to solve the famous Rubik’s Cube from the ‘80s. Stu dents could practice together on Mondays and Wednesdays during first recess. Students who can beat Mrs. Son’s time, received a prize and had their picture on the Rubik’s wall. What a great way to challenge our student’s minds!
The 5th Grade class experienced an exciting outdoor education on their over-night, Catalina Island trip. They snorkeled, kayaked, hiked and learned about marine biology on the beautiful island.

Life Science
Lettuce Grow donated Farmstand machine to grow different vegetables inside the classroom. The Lettuce Grow system supplements our life science unit on photosynthesis and cellular respiration, and students enjoy eating a healthy salad from their efforts. Through this unit, students dive into the creation story and the complexity of God’s handiwork with scientific inquiry.
8th Grade DC Trip
High School
The 8th grade class was excited to have the opportunity to visit Washington DC. Last year, the trip was canceled due to the pandemic. Students, faculty, and chaperone travelers explored the Nation’s Capital. They were “transported back in time” and visited early settlers in Jamestown and Colonial Williamsburg. They visited the battlefields of our country’s Civil War, walked in the footsteps of our founding fathers.
Our group toured the White House and met Chaplain Barry Black. Chaplain Black spoke to the students at the front steps of the Nation’s Capital and his message was an inspiration. The students also enjoyed watching the Wizards vs. Nuggets basketball game and the team warm-ups.
Versacare Venture Grant
LLA was awarded a Versacare Venture Grant for $30,000. This fund will help us reach our goal of providing students the best in STEM learning. The Innovation Lab will allow students to solve problems with empathy. Empathy is at the core of how we want our students to use our Innovation Lab. Whether it is medical, social, emotional, or functional, the solutions that our students develop will hopefully inspire them to keep the project going. In the future we hope to help students make connections with our community for marketing prototypes, applying for patents, and even forming companies should the concepts be viable.
High School Anatomy & Physiology Class
The High School Anatomy & Physiology students had the opportunity to tour the Loma Linda University School of Medicine. The students toured the cadaver lab and were offered an inside-look at human health.
Lunch with the Experts!
School Guidance Counselor, Lynne Hattendorf, invites various experts to speak to students during lunch time about their career fields.

Campus Ministries
LLA’s spiritual theme for 2022-2023 was “All of Us,” based on 2 Corinthians 12:27 which says, “All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.” Campus Ministries put a special emphasis on this in chapels, events, and activities.
Events like Christmas Palooza and Cultural Fair helped students bond with each other and grow closer to God.
Chapels engaged local youth pastors, and High School Student Week of Worship, had a “Stories” theme and featured students sharing their faith with their peers.
Admissions Update
Enrollment has increased as families look for K-12 education immersed in Christian values. We are happy that we can share Christ with these families and give their children an education that is rooted in Christian values.
This summer LLA recruited during VBS at Loma Linda University Church. It was wonderful to meet many children who were excited to learn more about Jesus.
Did You Know?
All children dedicated at our constituent churches receive an adorable teddy bear with an LLA sweater. Parents can complete an online form to receive a month of free tuition during their Kindergarten or 1st grade year here at LLA.
Home & School
Home & School is a collaborative partnership between parents, teachers, and school staff. It helps build a strong sense of community within the school. Home & School is lead by parent volunteers who organize and participate in various events such as Teacher’s Appreciation Week, Wellness Week, Pi Day, and Thanksgiving lunch. We are grateful to our Elementary, Junior High, and High School Home & School for their initiatives, fostering a positive and supportive school community.
