Head of Schools

Message from the Head of Schools

Dear LLA Family,

As we look back on another academic year at Loma Linda Academy, we reflect on the many successes and blessings we’ve experienced across our CC-12 community. Our spiritual theme for the entire school was Abide. This theme led our chapels, Weeks of Worship, and many conversations, leading our students on a journey of understanding our need for a life abiding in Christ. Our students from Children’s Center through 12th grade have excelled in academics, music, and athletics. While thriving as tournament and league champions in various sports, our athletes have continued to grow in sportsmanship, honesty, and respect. Our music department held several inspiring concerts and traveled to Thailand and Barcelona, delighting and witnessing to local audiences with their musical talents. We are incredibly proud of our students, teachers, and coaches for their hard work and dedication.

“I also want to thank our community for helping us exceed our LLA Impact Fund goal for the 2023-2024 year! Your generosity has enabled us to continue enhancing our programs and providing a rich, well-rounded education for all our students.”

Whether providing shade for the TK-2 bleachers, supporting the Innovation and Design Thinking Program, providing for the remodeling of the High School Innovation Lab, or purchasing school vans, your partnership is critical in helping us achieve our mission. We are deeply grateful for your continued investment in the future of Loma Linda Academy!

Finally, I want to take a moment to recognize the June retirement of our long-time Director of Advancement, Fonny Oei. Fonny has been a guiding force in helping us grow and expand the Advancement department throughout her years of service. Her leadership, passion, and dedication have left an enduring legacy, and we wish her the best in her retirement. At the same time, we are excited to welcome Finny Parchamento as our new Director of Advancement; she has now been in this role for the past four months. We look forward to continuing our growth under Finny’s leadership as we reach even greater heights in the years to come!

Blessed,

Iveth Valenzuela Head of Schools

Admissions Department

Enrollment 2023-2024

Loma Linda Academy opened the school year with over 1,300 students in TK-12th grade.

New Family Dinner

Our elementary administrators, Home and School Association, and admissions team hosted new families to a welcome dinner. Families met other new families, received information about the start of the school year, and participated in prize give-a-ways, all while enjoying a delicious Italian dinner.

In addition to “Roundup”, the admissions team also hosted quarterly campus tours for prospective student families to learn about the school.

Tour Highlights

One of our favorite admissions events is our TK and Kindergarten Round Up for prospective students. Visitors toured the campus, which was decorated in a western theme. Parents explored the classrooms, and heard about the different class rotations: P.E., Music, Innovation, Library. They also met teachers and administrators.

Roadrunner Golf Classic

Golf Tournament for Student Aid

The 24th Annual Roadrunner Golf Tournament took place on September 17, 2023, at the Morongo Golf Club at Tukwet Canyon. The event was dedicated to supporting 85 students by raising funds for financial aid. A total of 144 enthusiastic players convened for a morning of camaraderie, starting with a hearty breakfast before embarking on the tournament with a shotgun start. Following an exciting round of golf, participants gathered once again for a well-deserved lunch, where players shared experiences from the course. The success of the tournament was made possible through the generous support of our sponsors, players, and the hard work of our volunteers, whose contributions ensured a memorable event.

Raul Castillo, Robert Castillo, Mario Perez, and Scott Read earned them the title of tournament winners.

Thanks to the support of our sponsors, donors, and players, we were able to assist 88 students and raised $140,000.

Campus Highlights ’

Children’s Center

Children have enjoyed the addition of the new Outdoors Musical Center, funded by generous donations to the Julie Majestic Memorial Fund. The in-ground musical instruments encourage children to think creatively, explore, and enhance their musical abilities outside. The addition of the Center is an important part of the CC-12 strategic plan for students to develop innovation skills.

In the Nursery Unit, children watch the teacher carve a pumpkin, and learn to make observations such as color, size, shape, smell, and texture. They investigate, and communicate their predictions. This experience enhances cognitive development and understanding.

STEM for Preschoolers

Children work with partners to learn a variety of STEM concepts through fun projects. Working with pipe cleaners, children develop curiosity and cognitive processing skills. They learn math concepts like counting, size comparison, height, etc. They

learn science by making predictions of how many flowers can be added to the tree branches. They learn engineering by building a tree that can hold multiple plastic flowers.

Campus Highlights ’ 23- ’ 24

Elementary

Robotics

Our Elementary Robotics Club excelled at their first competition, held in Florida. Students showcased impressive robotic skills, teamwork, and problem-solving. This exciting event inspired future engineers.

Kindergarteners Learn to Ride Bikes

During P.E., Kindergarteners enjoy biking between obstacles. This is a favorite activity that teaches a fun skill while promoting exercise.

2nd Grade Field Trip

Second graders explored healthy eating and global trade at Stater Bros. They learned about food production, nutrition, and recycling while enjoying a behind-the-scenes tour.

Elementary Innovation

Our Innovation and Technology program introduces elementary students to coding, robotics, and design thinking. Older students mentor younger ones in 3D design and problem-solving. This program builds a strong foundation for future tech leaders.

Home & School Family Night

Elementary Family Night, hosted by Home & School, was an absolute delight!

The March event in the Elementary Gym which was filled with laughter and games, and created a warm, inviting atmosphere that truly felt like a family gathering. We give a huge thanks to our dedicated Home and School organizers for their hard work and commitment to making our campus feel like more than just a community — it’s a family.

Campus Highlights ’ 23- ’ 24

Junior High

Lights, Camera, Action!

Each year, the junior high hosts the 8th Grade Extravaganza, an event to celebrate 8th graders and honor their parents. Students chose the theme “A Night in Hollywood.” As students arrived on campus, they walked the red carpet, pausing for photo ops with custom backdrops and even the Hollywood sign. Students and parents enjoyed a social hour consisting of an elegant, light meal, desserts, and drinks. Parents mingled with each other, reflecting on their shared experiences, while students played lawn games, ate popcorn, and took photos at the photo booth. To conclude the evening, families were treated to a program starring their students, celebrating each student’s time in junior high and the teachers they encountered along the way. What a great way to call “That’s a Wrap” for junior high!

STEM Wing in Action

The New Junior High STEM Wing and Innovation Lab has been a blessing for students and teachers. Since the renovation, it has been buzzing with exciting activities and projects, showcasing the creativity, and ingenuity of our students. The Junior High Robotics class benefits from this dynamic space, giving students the freedom to test their robots and refine their coding skills. Technology

classes encourage innovation, leveraging the classroom’s collaborative space. Lab stations in the science classrooms facilitate hands-on activities, teaching scientific concepts through practical experience. Students learn hydroponics and dissections in 7th grade and perform chemical reaction experiments and soap making in 8th grade.

Campus Highlights ’ 23- ’ 24

High School

High School Innovation and TIE

The Innovation Lab and TIE Program (Technology, Innovation, Engineering) offers students a hands-on platform to explore technology and engineering concepts. Through collaborative projects and access to advanced facilities, students gain practical skills in robotics, sustainable engineering, and entrepreneurship. Collaborative project and professional development prepare students for successful careers, fostering creativity, ethics, and community engagement.

Aladdin Jr. by LLA Performance Club

Approximately 200-300 attended each of the two evening performances of the musical, Aladdin Jr. The elementary campus was also captivated with two in-school assemblies. Founded in early 2022, the LLA Performance Club offers all students a gateway into the world of theater. Through initiatives like lunchtime karaoke and candy grams, the club raised funds to support its annual winter musical. Students in the club also showcased their talents in chapel skits and other engaging activities. The club's mission is to foster creativity among students at LLA, providing an outlet to explore interests, build skills, and form lasting friendships. Previous productions include Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella: Youth Edition. The Aladdin Jr. had a cast of 27 students, and the production also included ushers and fundraising participants. Auditions are a rigorous process involving script and song excerpts, assessed by the club's audition panel. LLA’s Performance Club enriches students' lives by offering a supportive environment where they can grow in confidence, interpersonal skills, leadership, and responsibility.

High School Lunch Time Activities

LLA Student Association plans a range of activities to enhance the school atmosphere. The campus comes alive with spirited games and sports competitions. These activities not only provide entertainment but also foster a sense of community and school spirit among students. Student leaders plan these events so students can engage, unwind, and forge lasting connections with their peers.

Athletics Department

The 2023-2024 Season

This past year was truly memorable for the athletic department, marked by outstanding achievements across nearly every sport. Almost all teams either secured tournament or league championships or successfully qualified for CIF competitions. This level of success highlights not only the dedication and hard work of our athletes but also the exceptional coaching and support they receive. It’s evident that LLA is home to a remarkable group of talented athletes, each contributing to a culture of excellence and sportsmanship that sets our program apart. As we celebrate these accomplishments, we look forward to building on this momentum in the coming year.

Music Department

Elementary

During the 2023-2024 school year, the elementary campus presented one concert per grade level from TK to 5th and 6th Grade choir and some performances at our constituent churches.

In February, the 3rd grade students shared the light of Jesus as an “Agent of Change”. In March, 1st grade took a “Whirlwind Tour Around the World” from the US, Brazil, Mexico, South Africa, South Korea and Greece. Our 1st grade learned to recite 64 countries as they sang, “God’s Universal Language”. The 5th and 6th grade choir visited the Loma Linda Korean Seventh-Day Adventist church and shared music during the worship service. The Kindergarten concert, “Seeds of Faith” shared how the love of Jesus is planted in our hearts each day. The Vocal Festival, organized by the Southern California Vocal Association, led to a superior rating for our 5th and 6th grade choir! In May, 4th grade took their audience back in time to the California Gold Rush of 1848. This aligned with the 4th grade curriculum of California history. TK also made melodies from their hearts during their concert! Finally, 5th and 6th grade choir filmed a video with the song, “Friends” by Michael W. Smith.” The students’ enthusiasm and camaraderie showed that friendships last a lifetime.

Wind Symphony Tour Spain

Loma Linda Academy Wind Symphony (formerly known as the Symphonic Band) enjoyed an enriching concert tour in the regions of Valencia and Barcelona Spain, from June 5-12. They gave two full concerts and also partnered with Spanish youth bands; the Banda Primitiva Youth Band of Llíria, a suburb of Valencia, and the Band of the Orial Martorell School of Fine Arts in Barcelona for two additional concerts.

A tour highlight was visiting our sister school in Sagunto on Sabbath, where the students worshipped together in the morning, explored ancient Roman ruins in the afternoon, and performed a sacred concert for the community at a local theater. After the concert the musicians and chaperones returned to the school for fun and games with new friends.

Sightseeing and cultural experiences included visits to the historic town center of Valencia, the archaeological promenade and amphitheater of Tarragona, the mountaintop monastery of Montserrat, the city of Barcelona and its iconic unconventional church La Sagrada Familia.

Music Department

Pro Musica Tour

Thailand

Pro Musica’s journey through Thailand was truly remarkable. Despite the challenges of the rainy season, they were fortunate to enjoy clear skies that allowed them to fully engage in their planned activities—a credit to the grace of God guiding their travels.

One unforgettable moment was the “Luggage Incident” on their way to the zipline adventure in Chiang Mai.

As they navigated the winding roads, luggage spilled from a van ahead of them. Miraculously, the fragile crystal glasses essential for the students’ performance remained unharmed.

Beyond these moments, their interactions with Adventist communities across Thailand left a lasting impression. Witnessing the enduring impact of missionaries who had dedicated their lives to spreading the gospel in this country was deeply moving. Our LLA Pro Musica students, through their performances blending secular and sacred music, felt they were continuing this legacy. Their heartfelt rendition of “Jesus Loves Me” in Thai resonated with a diverse audience, highlighting the universal message of God’s love.

Alumni Homecoming

Welcome Home Alumni

The 118th Alumni Homecoming, held on March 8-9, 2024, was a delightful gathering that welcomed back a multitude of Alumni to our beloved campus. Alumni from the classes of ’74 and ’99, along with many others, converged in our high school gymnasium for a weekend filled with reminiscence and celebration. A highlight of this year’s event was the Music Vespers, a soul-stirring showcase featuring our esteemed Pro Musica and the majestic performances of our Wind Symphony. This addition to our program drew over 400 attendees to the weekend event.

During our Sabbath service, we were graced by pastor Jonathan Henderson, ’94. His uplifting sermon titled “Faith-Filling” moved everyone in attendance. The program also featured special musical performances, including “Goodness of God” performed by members of the class of ’94 and our own LLA 1st grade class singing “LLA School Song”. Alumni enriched the event with their musical talents, while Jack Boren ’74 and Jennell Eli Hollett ’74 led the roll call.

After the church service, alumni spent time reconnecting with friends during lunch. Small groups also toured the campus, guided by our school principals.

Homecoming not only celebrated our past, it also strengthened the ties that bind us together as a community committed to excellence and fellowship.

Impact Fund ’ 23-

$213,000

Graduation 2024

Graduation Season

Our graduation season commenced with our final Friday assembly of the school year. We took the time to honor and acknowledge all our graduates from every campus. It was a wonderful opportunity to recognize their hard work and achievements.

Following the assembly, we moved to the field, where our Kindergarten, 8th grade, and 12th grade students walked down a pathway surrounded by the whole TK-12th grade students, staff and faculty. It was a touching moment as they began their next adventures in life. The day was truly memorable for all!

Children’s Center Graduation

Our Children’s Center and Kindergarten teachers celebrated the accomplishments of their students. These special graduations created treasured memories for parents, grandparents and friends. Many will continue for 12 years and celebrate high school graduation, in the same location.

High School Consecration

With 113 graduates preparing to embark on their college journeys, we celebrated their academic achievements and looked ahead to their promising futures.

Amidst these celebrations, our community also experienced moments of profound spiritual significance. During the junior high graduation ceremony and the high school consecration evening, we were deeply moved as 10 students made a lifechanging decision to accept Jesus as their Savior through baptism. It was a testament to the spiritual growth and community spirit that permeates our educational institution.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11

• Increase Financial Aid and Scholarships.

• Surpassed our $160,000 Impact Fund Goal, raising $213,000 to provide two vans and outdoor educational shade for our Children’s Center.

• Assisted 88 students with financial aid through our 24th Roadrunner Golf Classic Tournament.

• Created a memorable Alumni Weekend with more than 350 guests and participation from Alumni and current students. Mark your calendar for this year’s Alumni Homecoming! March 7-8, 2025.

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for Fonny Oei as she moved to retirement. Her leadership and guidance have paved the way for me in my new role as Director of Advancement. I enjoy my work in philanthropy and have a passion for Adventist education. I have the incredible opportunity to help others experience the joy of giving and investing in our students and the generation to come.

Once again, Thank You for being an integral part of the school. Your dedication and generous contributions have enabled us to provide top-tier education, cutting-edge facilities, and countless opportunities for our students to thrive. With your continued support and as we ABIDE in GOD as our guide, I am confident that our school will continue to grow and have a BRIGHT FUTURE.

To God be the glory,

Thank You

NEW Innovation Camp

This summer, LLA hosted its first Innovation Camp and was held at the JH Innovation Camp. Here, students from grades 3 to 6 delved into coding, robotics, circuitry, and 3D printing. They even tackled a real-world challenge by creating devices to assist individuals with Pusher Syndrome and presented their products to their families and friends. The Innovation Lab has become a hub of creativity and learning, fostering a spirit of collaboration and discovery among our students, preparing them for service.
