2022-2023 Impact Fund Help LLA Fund Innovation & Design Thinking Initiatives!

What is the LLA Impact Fund?

Our annual LLA IMPACT FUND drive raises funds for special projects that enhance learning for our students. Our goal for 2022-2023 is to fund a new TK-12 initiative for teaching STEM through ”Innovation & Design Thinking.” The funds will provide for a remodeled Elementary STEM Room, new STEM Resources for the Junior High, and renovations at the High School to provide a new space for teaching innovation and design thinking.

How will it benefit the Elementary?

With your support, we would like to remodel and re-equip our elementary computer lab. The NEW, flexible learning space will include fun things for STEM learning. It won’t be just a computer lab anymore. We will have space to make adjustments to our new classroom based on which class will be using it. Students can’t wait to learn about robotics, 3D printing and coding in our new STEM classroom.

How will it benefit the Junior High?

Junior High would like to purchase new microscopes for Life Science units. Funds will also help to purchase a special technology kit that will teach coding and technology.

How will it benefit the High School?

Plans for a major renovation of Rhoads Hall are in place. We just need your support! The renovation will provide space and resources for students to have quality, project-based learning. Students will work on meaningful projects that encourage them to problem-solve and think critically. They will identify real-world problems from an empathetic point of view, research a solution, test it, produce a prototype, and refine it until they find a working solution for the problem. This new space in Rhoads Hall and the new STEM resources provided by the Impact Fund will make this type of project-based learning a reality.

Will YOU help us reach our goal of $155,000?

Your support will help our students prepare for their future.

Past Projects—REPORT

YOU made an IMPACT!

Funded!

2021-2022

In 2021-2022, each campus had an IMPACT Fund project that needed funding. With your generous contributions, we received $100,000! With these funds, a shaded area was installed at the elementary on November 5, 2022 for TK-2nd grade students as they wait to be picked up after school. The junior high received a portable sound system to provide better sound for outdoor gatherings. Funds for the high school helped to extend the shaded lunch area where students can build community.

How Can I Help?

Other ways to support LLA!

Donor Highlights

Three Loma Linda Academy alumni legacies are remembered thru the 128CM Memorial Foundation. The foundation was started in 2009 in memory of 14 people lost in a plane crash in Butte, MT on March 22, 2009. To date, the foundation has contributed $37,000 to LLA in student scholarships and contributed over $600,000 to Christian

Education. Each year the foundation holds a golf tournament at Furnace Creek Golf Course in Death Valley, CA, at this tournament there is a student flight competition where schools can send teams to win extra dollars for their school. See www.128CM.org for more information.

What’s Happening at the Elementary? Enrollment

Our Elementary had tremendous growth in enrollment for 2022-2023. We are blessed to have most grade levels reach 4 classrooms. We now offer strings in our music program for grades 4 to 6.

Clothing Drive

Elementary students participated in the New Clothing Drive Project for unhoused families in our community during their week of prayer. The SAC Health’s Community Resource Center received new clothes and gift cards for Target.

Kindness Ambassadors

On October 19, our 1st-3rd grade launched Kindness Ambassadors. This is a leadership and interpersonal skill program.

Grounded Kids

Students are taught and encouraged to be Grounded in Jesus. The Grounded Kids program teaches 4 core values: emotional intelligence, respect, integrity, and grit. When a teacher sees a student demonstrate a core value, they receive a Grounded Kids slip. Each week the slips are entered into a drawing and the selected students are recognized during assembly.

Journalism, Robotics and more!

Junior high students have the option to choose Journalism as their elective class. This year Mrs. Rozaleth Tenga joined the faculty as the Journalism, Robotics, and Science teacher. The Campus Chronicles (newspaper) and LLA Loop (broadcast/video) started when the Journalism class was offered this school year.

Students distribute The Campus Chronicle, the new newspaper for the Junior High.

Students from Broadcast Journalism class interviewed coach Brady Tull for their LLA Loop segment. The mechanical energy project allowed students to build a paper rollercoaster. Eighth grade science students built cars with Lego blocks to learn Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion.

Students Build Trebuchets for Physics

Students in Physics and Honors Physics, taught by Mrs. Heidi Elssmann, built trebuchets this year. They put into practice the concepts of rotational motion and conservation of energy. A trebuchet utilizes a weight that must be lifted. This provides gravitational potential energy to the system. When the weight is released the energy is transformed into kinetic energy while the lever rotates around to release the projectile. On November 18, 2022, 28 teams competed to launch a baseball the farthest with their trebuchets. The baseballs landed an average of 60 feet horizontally from the trebuchet. The farthest measurable launch was 143 feet. However, two teams sent their baseball so far that it couldn’t be measured because they landed on the roof of Rhoads Hall. The trebuchet project spanned several months and taught students how to use a timeline to plan their strategy.

Each group had to resolve unexpected issues that arose. Some students used the skills they learned in the TIE Program (Technology, Innovation, Engineering). They cut essential pieces for the trebuchet’s arm using a special router. “I was impressed with the thoughtfulness, creativity, and perseverance that the students exhibited with this project,” said Mrs. Elssmann.

LLA Youth-to-Youth Club 30-Years Helping the Unhoused

Since 1992, the Youth-to-Youth Club has collected non-perishable food and toiletries for residents of the Drug Alternative Program in Grand Terrace and more recently, for Inland Housing Solutions in Loma Linda. This year, during Red Ribbon Week, over 750 food and toiletry items were collected and distributed to more than 20 families. For Christmas, gingerbread kits and board games were collected for the 19 unhoused families connected with Inland Housing Solutions.

Staff members from Inland Housing Solutions received food donations from Youth-to-Youth Club members.

Church Performance

Our 4th grade choir, led by Mrs. Florence Ahn, performed at the Inland Empire Seventh-day Adventist Filipino Church on December 10, 2022. We thank associate pastor Melvin Ebora for the invitation.

During a November chapel at the high school, we honored Native American Heritage through worship and language. Our worship team led out in music and then our high school English teacher, Ms. Ysabella Ramirez read a Native American poem that celebrated the Native American culture. Our guest speaker, Maria Lorenzo of the Morongo tribe, presented some of the history of the Native American tribes here in Southern California. The week’s praise and worship the song Jireh, meaning “God will provide.” It emphasizes the importance of having gratitude for God in our lives.

We had a fun community segment of pie tasting in honor of the upcoming Thanksgiving break. Pastor Chris Stanley touched on the importance of spending valuable time with God on the Sabbath with a study of Psalms 90:12.
