Staying Active Being stuck in quarantine can make it hard for some people to be motivated to exercise and stay fit. However, being active is the key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Exercise can help to relieve stress, reduce risks for diseases, as well as keep you in shape. Here are some examples of how fellow students stay active during this time of isolation and uncertainty. Emma Paden (11) stays active by attending varsity volleyball and basketball practice once a week, sometimes more often. She has been playing these sports since junior high or even before. On the days she doesn’t have practice, she gets active by running, walking, or doing a workout. Paden said, “What keeps me motivated is the feeling after you workout. You feel more accomplished and it feels good to get your body moving after sitting at a computer all day.”

She has been dancing ever since she was five years old and has played football since eighth grade. However, her family walks have recently started because of quarantine. Fick said, “When I don’t exercise, I really feel a difference in how I feel physically as well as emotionally. After a good sweat, I feel better than I did before.”

She tries to go on walks every day while taking some breaks when necessary. Maintaining fitness makes her happy and brings her relaxation. She is motivated to build muscle so she can run faster and play more sports. Daniel Baldwin (11) keeps his fitness up by running and going to cross country practices on Tuesday and Thursday each week. He runs about three times a week and has enjoyed doing this since July of last year. When it was in-person, he would get motivation because competitors were running against him. However, now during quarantine, he said, “You have to hike yourself up mentally and give yourself your energy.”
