A Change in Timing

In December of 2018, the current Loma Linda Academy HS students took their finals in December for the first time. Previously, finals had been held in January after winter vacation.

For two years, finals have been held in December, but this school year, they are being held in January again.

Current seniors who have been to LLA since their freshman year have experienced taking finals before and after Christmas break. Both Isabelle Gultom (12) and Tomorrow Xu (12) prefer to take their finals before Christmas break. “I would like to spend my Christmas break stress-free and enjoy it to the fullest, but now I would have to spend my break studying and preparing for it,” Gultom said.

This event set teachers and students behind schedule. In order spend my break to get the schedule back on track, the administration has decided to push back studying and finals to after Christmas.

When school started started later than planned, “we felt the difference between both semester was too great,” said Iveth Valenzuela, the Loma Linda Academy high school Principal. So in order to even out the two semesters, first semester finals will begin after Christmas break.

In regards to his sentiment about the change in dates for finals, Xu said, “I think that’s a burden on students as we have to study and need to prepare for the final during Christmas vacation which creates pressure during holiday time.”

Gultom agreed with Xu, emphasizing that her birthday coincides with that time period. She explained that “it would have been great to celebrate my birthday with having no more finals,” instead of going into the break needing to prepare for her final exams.

Since Gultom and Xu have had the experience of taking finals before and after Christmas vacation, their advice on studying comes from a wider perspective. Xu advises students to complete their work on time and to ask questions. He reminds students that teachers have office hours, and this time should be utilized to clarify anything not understood. Gultom takes a few hours from each day just to review concepts and notes. This is a simple and effective method, and for extra clarification, she refers to educational videos on the topic.

This shift in dates would be an adjustment for many students. To help ease students during finals season, Hans Figueroa, the Loma Linda Academy high school Vice Principal, advises students to ask questions, review the material, begin studying early, organize virtual study groups, be well-rested, create and stick to a study schedule, and to prioritize their time. Heidi Elssmann, the Physics teacher, tells students to “Take 15-30 minutes per day to review during break. If they do that, it doesn’t feel overwhelming.

Finals season is coming upon LLA students quickly. So sleep well, study sufficiently, ask questions, take notes, and take care of your mental health.

As students, being active in and out of school is something everyone does and that everyone enjoys. Clubs are a way of being active and doing something that you enjoy. At Loma Linda Academy, there are many extra curricular activities you could be a part of such as Art club, Book Club, BSA, Photo Club, and Youth to Youth Club. The students at Loma Linda Academy have been able to create different organizations and activities that are happening now, even while on distance learning.

Staying Active Being stuck in quarantine can make it hard for some people to be motivated to exercise and stay fit. However, being active is the key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Exercise can help to relieve stress, reduce risks for diseases, as well as keep you in shape. Here are some examples of how fellow students stay active during this time of isolation and uncertainty.

Emma Paden (11) stays active by attending varsity volleyball and basketball practice once a week, sometimes more often. She has been playing these sports since junior high or even before.

On the days she doesn’t have practice, she gets active by running, walking, or doing a workout. Paden said, “What keeps me motivated is the feeling after you workout. You feel more accomplished and it feels good to get your body moving after sitting at a computer all day.”

Maintaining fitness makes her happy and brings her relaxation. She is motivated to build muscle so she can run faster and play more sports.

Daniel Baldwin (11) keeps his fitness up by running and going to cross country practices on Tuesday and Thursday each week. He runs about three times a week and has enjoyed doing this since July of last year.

When it was in-person, he would get motivation because competitors were running against him. However, now during quarantine, he said, “You have to hike yourself up mentally and give yourself your energy.”

Robert Skoretz (religion teacher) does many activities to stay active. One of them includes going mountain biking with his sons Trevin (11) and Jaiden (9). He goes as often as he can, which is usually about once or twice a week.

They have been mountain biking for almost three years now and they have discovered many new and exciting trails. They enjoy riding on many trails including places like Hulda Crooks, Big Bear, Sycamore Canyon (Riverside), and during Thanksgiving break, they went to Mammoth and biked.

Brooke LaTour (9) going jogging As well as going mountain biking with his sons, he also walks for about 30 minutes every day. During second period, his free period, he goes out to the track and walks a mile and a half in 30 minutes. Even on days when he is at home, he continues to walk for about 30 minutes.

Another activity he enjoys doing is outside gardening work such as planting and trimming his fruit trees and other plants. Gardening is a good form of exercise and can also bring you happiness. It can be very satisfying and relaxing to take care of plants.

play racquetball and pickup basketball.

However, because of the pandemic, he can no longer do the same. Although it can be hard for some to stay motivated, Skoretz continues to stay active because he gets tired of sitting down for so long. He said, “I like outdoor sports, so anytime I can get out, I like to ski, hike, bike, or go down to the beach. I love being outdoors and keeping my body active.”

Staying active also plays a significant role in your mental and physical health. During this challenging time of fatigue and stress, we must maintain a healthy lifestyle by staying active and being healthy!

Volunteering in a Pandemic

With the current pandemic, it can be hard to find safe volunteering opportunities. Even with everything going on right now, there are still ways for you to help out in your community.

A couple of easy ways to help from home are by making masks for essential workers, the CDC has a tutorial on its website which you can find at cdc.gov. Or you could prepare meal kits for others. The Red Cross has a Digital Advocate program where you can help by posting calls to action on social media.

Right now, many senior citizens in nursing homes are not able to see their families due to the new lockdown. You could speak to a coordinator from a nursing home asking what you could do for them, like video calling with residents, or hosting a Zoom bingo game for them.

Being an SA officer and trying to plan events with all of the restrictions in place has been a challenge. So far all events except pre-recorded noon time activities have been cancelled.

SA president Atalia Villegas said that all these cancellations have “actually been really hard on all the officers this year because obviously when we were running we thought we’d be in school, but now we’re having to adapt and change all of our plans. It was especially hard in the beginning when our events were canceled left and right, but we just kept pushing through and started working on the next thing.

We’ve been able to come up with a lot of ideas to continue to be able to do events but still being socially distanced and keeping people safe.”

“It’s definitely not ideal but it’s really all part of being an officer.”’

Kurt Baretta (10) said, “We all lowkey knew this year was gonna be different and what we were signing up for but we still did it.”

With case numbers still high, it’s questionable whether a banquet will be possible at all this year. According to Ms. Constanzo, SA is still going forward with it’s banquet plans for February, “cautiously optimistic” that it will happen.

The officers have been working their hardest and have stayed motivated despite the challenges they’ve faced.

Baretta said, “I personally manage to stay motivated to do this because I absolutely love it and it’s just a great time even when I have to make new plans.”

Possible Vaccine Timeline

As of December 17, 2020, there are roughly 15 million cases of COVID-19 patients in the US, and 107,124 of those cases are in San Bernardino, as reported by https:// www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ country/us/. This number is only expected to rise. According to Jade Hernandez and Amy Powell of Eyewitness News, Southern California’s ICU capacity has dropped to below 15%, prompting a strict stay at home order, to curtail the spread of Covid-19. With rampant spread of coronavirus and the dwindling number of ICU beds, a Covid-19 vaccine may be the key to ending this pandemic.

“There is light at the end of the tunnel, we’re a few months from seeing real progress with the vaccine,” said Governor Newsom, according to abc7news.com. Between December 12-15, health care workers will be able to get the first round of vaccines. The vaccine will be administered in order of importance.

First, workers in Tier 1 will be able to get the vaccine. These are workers in acute care facilities, skilled nursing facilities and dialysis centers will get it first. In Tier 2, intermediate health care facilities, in-home health workers, and community health workers will get it second. In Tier 3, lab workers, dental offices, pharmacies, will get it third.

After this the rest of the California population will be inoculated, from those who are most at risk then to those

who are less at risk. Young and healthy individuals will not be encouraged to get a vaccine, until much later.

Pets & their Owners

Vivian, Dovy, Donny & William Kim

Adam Tsao, a junior, found Boba at a Petsmart in Redlands after looking for cat food. Tsao was attached to Boba when he laid sight and begged his parents for the adoption of the Bicolor kitten.

Upon the deal he made with his parents he would have to take care of Boba in his room till the young kitten was ready to explore and interact with other cats. Tsao truly loves his cat Boba and hopes Boba feels the same.

Matthew Diehl, a freshman, was only four years old when he recived Enzo his Yorkshire Terrier in 2010 and Enzo was but three months old.

Meanwhile Enzo is a lively little dog that loves to snuggle around whenever he has food such as apples or peanut butter. Diehl’s mom is the one taking care of little Enzo most of the time like feeding and other take care stuff, but at the end of the day, Deihl and Enzo are both happy to be together.

William Kim, a sophomore has one Yorkshire t\Terrier called Vivian and two Golden doodles named Dovy & Donny. He takes care of his dogs every morning by providing food and water and taking Dovy & Donny out for walks sometimes because the Goldendoodles are pretty big dogs. Vivian was adopted from a petstore and the Goldendoodles were welcomed into William’s family by a breeder.

Lilo & Natalia Drachenburg

Langga & Faith Albis

Natalia Drachenburg, a senior not only owns one or two, but five whole pets which include three dogs and two cats. Sadie is a Chihuahua weiner dog mix, Lilo which is a Labrador/German shepard mix and Stitch who is also the same as Lilo which would make sense considering that both Lilo and Stitch are siblings.

Drachenburg’s cats are name Casper and Cookie Dough. These lively pets have all been with Drachenburg for atleast a year having the oldest in the family being Sadie which has been there for seven years. Drachenburg likes to take her dogs out for walks whenever she needs a break from her homework in the afternoons and the pets like to come inside in the evenings due to winter chill.

But it seems all of Drachenburg’s pets are happy with the home they have.

Faith Albis, a sophomore has a six month old Cinnamon Pied Cockatiel named Langga. Albis’s cousin had a bunch of Cockatiel birds birds that her cousin breaded. After the baby bird was born, Langga was give to Albis to feed which Albis said was “pretty difficult,” faith said. Langga and Albis have grown closer to each other from these past few months as Langga likes the tweet during Faith’s zoom classes and sing alot when class is in session. Langga and Albis are both happy with how things are as of right now.

As of 17 Jan. the US has 17,587,979 Coronavirus Cases and 317,458 deaths. In California, there have been 1,741,334 cases and 22,011 deaths. In San Bernardino County there have been 144,455 cases and 1,323 deaths, according to worldometer.com

Due to the spiking numbers of COVID-19, all in-person vespers have been cancelled. Along with all inperson class vespers being cancelled, all sports team activities are also being postponed until the new year.

Christmas break is from December 21, 2020 to January 1, 2021. Classes will resume on Monday January 4, 2021. Finals will be taking place from January 13-15, 2021. This is the second week back after Christmas break. The end of the 2nd quarter/1st semester is on Friday, January 15, 2021.

Students who took the PSAT test in October received their score on Monday, December 7, 2020. If you have not seen your score and would like to see it, go to the College Board Website at www.collegeboard. org. Once you get there, create an account if you haven’t already and then login into your account to view your score. For more information view the Guidance Office Notes from December 4.

On Friday, December 4, COVID testing was held at the school from 12:00 to 2:00 in the Heritage Room and 2:30 to 3:30 at the Children’s Center. A second day of testing was held on Sunday, December 6 from 10:00 to 2:00 in the LLA High School Gymnasium, which serviced 300 appointments. All employees got tested on campus as well as many LLA families.

The second semester begins on January 18,2021. Once the second semester begins, students will have two weeks to add, drop, or switch their classes. After the two week cut off, if a student drops a class, it will be marked as “wf ” (withdraw fail) The CDC had forecasted a rise in COVID cases because of group gatherings throughout the thanksgiving break, that has been the case for our elementary campus. According to the elementary’s “Guidelines for Health & Safety” document LLA has done the following: notify the local public health department, isolate case and exclude from school for 10 days from symptom onset or test date, identify contacts and quarantine/exclude contacts for 14 days after the last date the was was present at school, and disinfection and cleaning of classroom. Based on the previous guidelines there have been a total of six classrooms who have been quarantined and are currently remote learning since returning from Thanksgiving break.

Christmas Cake Truffles

Ingredients : - 1 cake mix (Betty Crocker Cake Mix or any of your choosing) - 1 cup of Betty Crocker™ Rich & Creamy cream cheese frosting (or any other frosting of your choosing) - 3 bags of white(12oz), green(12oz), and red(12oz) candy melts - red or green sugar Sprinkles

Step By Step : 1

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spray a 13x9-inch pan with baking spray. In a large bowl, beat cake mix, water, oil, eggs, food color, and cocoa with an electric mixer on low speed for 30 seconds. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes. Pour into the pan.

Line cookie sheets with waxed paper. Remove cake from pan and crumble into a large bowl; stir in frosting. Roll mixture into 1 1/4-inch ball; place on cookie sheets.

In a large bowl, beat cake mix, water, oil, eggs, mixer on low speed for 30 seconds. Then on medium speed 2 minutes. Pour into the pan.

Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool completely in a pan on a cooling rack

Melt candy melts as directed on the package. Dip each cake ball into melted coating, tapping off the excess and taking care not to get crumbs in the coating. Return the truffles to cookie sheets. Decorate with sprinkles before coating sets.
