WALCHEREN ARCHIPELAGO FUTURE CHALLENGES WHY? The peninsula of Walcheren is facing an uncertain future. Sealevel rise and subsidence pose a threat for the existence of this giant bathtub made out of villages and agricultural grounds. Reinforcements and maintainance of the seadikes will reach itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s limits both physical and in an economical way. Before Walcheren became a peninsula. It used to be an island. Looking back further, it used to be a dynamic environment consisting out of islands and sandplates, shaped by the force of water. In this past lies a key to revitalize and reshape Walcheren, using water as leverage.

Gradually, Walcheren will transform into an Archipelago once again. Water from the Westerscheld will once again create a dynamic landscape with tidal differences in the landscape. Instead of agriculture as an important businessmodel, the focus will lie on tourism. Existing villages will be protected with new and more efficient protection from the tidal powers. Dikes will no longer solely serve as protection. Instead they will become part of the urban fabric, in order to exploit coastal qualities. Based on the higher creek ridges new Island resorts will be created. Next to water villas on stilts also made on higher grounds. In between the higher grounds, new lakes will appear on the lowest clay grounds. The existing water channels in the landscape will be reused to facilitate the larger ships coming into the Archipelago. AVB 2019
