THE LOCKYER VALLEY HAS A RICH AND DIVERSE HISTORY WHICH CAN BE EXPLORED THROUGH THE CEMETERIES OF OUR AREA.
There are 15 cemeteries located throughout the Lockyer Valley, established from 1867 onward. Among many of these cemeteries you can find heritage listed monuments and old tombstones from ages past.
If you are tracing your family ancestry, have an interest in genealogy or just enjoy a quiet stroll soaking up the local history then these self explore trails are for you.
Please respect each cemetery you visit. Take all rubbish with you and ensure that you close all entry gates securely as you leave.

HattonVale Old Apostolic Cathedral and Cemetery
3 Niemeyers Road, Hatton Vale
Founded in 1883 by Heinrich Friedrich Niemeyer, a German immigrant who formed the area’s first Apostolic congregation. The current brick cathedral was built in the 1950’s. This peaceful place offers wide views of the Lockyer Valley and provides layers of local German history.
St. Pauls Lutheran Cemetery
Summerholm Road, Hatton Vale
Founded around 1881 and closed in 1985. St. Pauls Lutheran Cemetery has approximately 100 to 150 graves, many of which are of the Lutheran German immigrants who settled here and helped to build the Lockyer Valley.
Plainland Lutheran Cemetery
Cemetery Road, Plainland
Established circa 1880. Approximately 180 graves.
Green Pastures Lutheran Church and Cemetery
Cnr. Zabel and Fritz Road, Lockrose
This lovely church and cemetery were established around 1912.
Gatton Cemetery
Lake Apex Drive, Gatton
Located adjacent to the Lake Apex Parkland, the Gatton Cemetery’s first burial was recorded on March 6, 1872. The graves of Michael, Norah and Ellen Murphy, victims of the unsolved Gatton murders in 1898, rest here.
The Old Gatton Cemetery
Riddell Street, Gatton (Gatton’s first cemetery)
A plaque marks 24 names of those who had been buried between 1840-1870. The memorial plaque can be found roadside in Riddell Street.
Caffey General Cemetery
Mt Sylvia Road, Caffey
Caffey Cemetery was established around 1910. There are approximately 100 graves located in this serene setting. Impressive old bottle trees are dotted throughout the grounds. The cemetery is still in use.
Ingoldsby Lutheran Cemetery
Ingoldsby Road, (500m north of Goulds Road), Ingoldsby This old isolated cemetery is located approximately 100m from the road on the western side in a paddock. It features spectacular views of the Lockyer Valley. Approximately 40 graves. Please ensure the gate is closed securely upon leaving.

Gatton Clifton Road, Ma Ma Creek
Established around 1896 for the Anglican community of Ma Ma Creek. The memorial for James, George and Bertie Andrews, WWI soldiers, was erected here by their devastated Mother, Fleurine Elsie Andrews in 1920. It is the only remaining digger statue in Queenslad wearing a cap instead of a slouch hat. This statue was heritage listed in 1992.
6 Cemetery Road, Helidon
Established 1881 the Helidon General Cemetery has approximately 500 graves. This cemetery is in a scenic position with wide views of the Lockyer Hills. Interesting Helidon history including WW1 and WW2 graves can be found.
Helidon Roman Catholic Cemetery
53 Helidon Dip Road, Helidon
Forest Hill Cemetery
Logan Road (off QAC Connection Road), College View
Established around 1908 and still in use today. Approximately 170 graves.
Laidley Cemetery
Southern Street, Laidley
Established around 1880 the cemetery is maintained today by the Lockyer Valley Regional Council. Take a peaceful stroll through the 12 sections of the cemetery.
396 Ropeley Rockside Road, Ropeley
Ropeley Church and Cemetery sit in a lovely rural setting with historic tombstones. Established around 1901, around 250 graves are located here.
Cnr. Ropeley and Olm Road, Ropeley
Used during the 1880’s this cemetery is full of settler history and features wrought iron work particular to this period. It was closed for burials in 1918 but is still open for reflection.
Located not far from the General Cemetery is the Roman Catholic Cemetery. The Roman Catholic Cemetery was opened around 1883. This is the resting place of many west Lockyer Catholics.
Murphys Creek Cemetery
Cemetery Road (McCanns Road), Murphys Creek
This small local cemetery established around 1867 is possibly the oldest cemetery in the Lockyer Valley. English and Scottish settlers and families are buried here. This cemetery has approximately 90 graves.
