“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can exist only until the voters discover they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that democracy always collapses over a loose fiscal policy, always to be followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been 200 years. These nations have progressed through this sequence: “From bondage to spiritual faith; From spiritual faith to great courage; From courage to liberty; From liberty to abundance; From abundance to selfishness; From selfishness to apathy; From apathy to dependence; From dependence back into bondage." ~Alexander Fraser Tytler, 1776

The 7 Modern Sins: Politics without principles, Pleasures without conscience, Wealth without real value delivery, Knowledge without character and wisdom, Industry without decency, morality, and trust, Science without hope and service to humanity, Worship without humility, sacrifice and surrender. ~Canon Frederic Donaldson

In spite of hurricanes, financial melt downs, and political drama, we continue to build our business. We have amassed a tremendous backlog, established several new branches, and set invoicing records. These results are testament to our business model, the hard work of our personnel, and the support of our suppliers and clients. Although we have a healthy, growing company, we are not immune to the uncertainty in the business environment. As such we are going to have to work even harder to protect our company and our dedicated staff. I recognize and appreciate everyone’s efforts thus far in 2008; however, with so many unknowns in the market, each of us will have to strive to make a greater contribution if we are to continue growing our business. This quest will not be easy or without sacrifice. Yet, as with Ike, we will be ready, we will work together, and we will overcome these new economic challenges as they develop.

Business According to June Lockwood International, Inc. is indeed “the Valve Connection to the World.” In the last few months our global team June Yonkman, has worked Vice President , Commercial Manager together on several different projects worldwide. On the Praxair Project, Giovanni Capasso (Italy), Matt Cassidy (Chicago) and Richard King (Houston) all worked together on a five month negotiation quest to secure an order with a company based in Germany. The order will be executed from Memphis, Tennessee, and the jobsite is located in California. On the REC Project, Dave MacKay (UK), Vince Pittman (Singapore), and Michael Graff / Luca Radrizzani (Houston) all worked together on a four month negotiation quest to secure an order with a London based engineering company. The order will be executed from an engineering company in Singapore and will be jointly managed out of Lockwood Houston and Lockwood Singapore offices. We are currently in negotiations on several different projects in the UK, Italy, Canada, Japan, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. A special “thank you” goes out to everyone for working together as a team and making things happen. Regards, June Yonkman

Chief Financial Officer Betty Allen (CFO) allowed us some time to catch up on news and happenings from her departmental perspective. We begin by talking about Hurricane Ike. Betty says Mike Owens, Judy Collier, Doug Diefendorf and Alan Walls all reported to work Saturday and/or Sunday to prepare Lockwood for business (fire up the generators, ready buildings, and inspect for damage). Furthermore, MRO’s Cindy Williams (with husband) was onsite to pitch in. With MRO being a 24/7 department, Tony Betty Allen Freeman even made some emergency deliveries to Chief Financial Officer customers. A big “thank you” for going above and beyond to those employees, and anyone we may have omitted. She says it was unofficially reported that all Sarnia employees who manned the phones for Houston are now fully qualified to be Lockwood receptionists! An official “thank you” from Ms. Allen (and all of Corporate Houston) for helping us out. Renovations are currently being done in Chicago and the new facility in Beaumont, in addition to the Bennington Master Distribution Center (see picture below). Beaumont was delayed first with Gustav and most recently, Ike. The high pile storage permits are in the works, as evidenced by new fire hydrant lines, fire entrance/exit doors and sidewalks at Corporate Headquarters. Internationally, as reported locally, Singapore and Italy are official, and we are working on Dubai. We are currently seeking a location in Johannesburg for the South Africa branch. Ms. Allen reiterates how well prepared Lockwood was and feels this is an opportunity to learn from Hurricane Ike and better prepare for the next event but all in all, Lockwood pulled together and did very well.

BENNINGTON MASTER DISTRIBUTION FACILITY

100,000 sq. ft. facility in Houston will be featured in the next edition.

Donna Wells, Operations Manager, reports the focus of her department has been to streamline shipments and improve overall efficiency involving transfer of product. As of 9/24/08 Lockwood officially took 100% ownership of the new distribution facility on Bennington Road (pictured above). The facility will relieve congestion and traffic at Lockwood and allow us to improve overall efficiency of moving, storing and shipping Donna Wells, Operation Manager product to our customers and our branches. The facility should be operational by year end. Working with Procurement, Donna is striving to optimize branch inventory by performing stock transfers. Page 3

by Cindy Williams Cindy Williams invested some time with me to share the direction of her department and those involved in accomplishing the goals of her department. “Projects has long been the Cindy Williams mainstay of Lockwood. Having MRO Manager succeeded in those has allowed us to branch out in inventory and customers. So, to that end, we are working to expand our base of operations by bidding new MRO contracts and by searching out the customers local to the branches, in both refinery and chemical arenas. Gary Hart and Tim Yon’s recent promotions to Regional Managers will assist in meeting this goal. Gary’s focus is the Mid-US and Eastern Canada Regions, while Tim is focused on the Gulf Coast. Our aim is to not only bring in more customers and jobs to the branches, but to create a more independent bidding process. We believe this is a win-win situation for all.”

fyi...marketing news We’re extremely busy (too) therefore in order to help prioritize our projects and our time there is a new form that will need to be completed prior to resources being allocated. Once our main objectives are achieved (the website and company brochure) we will be much nicer and easier to work with! We very much appreciate the folks who give us a heads up for upcoming projects. And, the ones who don’t - well, shame on you! Also, four months notice minimum will be required to prepare for any future Trade Show projects. Lockwood International and Lockwood Valves Canada letterhead and fax coversheets (with Houston addresses) are posted on the Sales Drive (J:), the Marketing Drive (S:), and the Portal (see story from IT). Send us your branch letterhead and we’ll “pretty” it up and send back to you (insert the new logo with the tag line). We shall begin posting any “marketing news” from June Yonkman’s weekly Sales Meetings on the Corporate Calendar on the Portal. Matthias Jung (pronounced “Ma-tee-us Young) and Dennis Jackson (pronounced “DJ” -ha) join the Marketing Department. Matthias is Sr. Graphic Designer and Dennis as Marketing Coordinator.. They are talented, quick learners and are able to keep up with Marketing’s tempo. We are so glad to have them both!

Any company that wants to be successful ensures that words like “quality” and “safety” are part of their day-to-day business operations. Lockwood’s Quality Process is relatively new, however we are already being recognized by clients for our efforts. We should all be proud. Without an audited quality program we would be just another distributor, and there are plenty out there, but the fact is Lockwood is working hard to remain number Benny Howard one and be leader of the pack. Keep up the Quality Manager hard work Lockwood! Benny Howard announces Terry Choi and Steve Tidwell to his team: Terry Choi joins Lockwood to assist in all technical issues concerning customers and suppliers alike. He has worked as an engineer since 2001 and received his mechanical engineering degree from the University of Alberta Canada and is a registered PE (professional engineer) in Canada. Terry’s experience with Lockwood Projects began five years ago when he worked for Universe Machine. He also worked as engineering manager / QA Manager for Flowserve Control Valve Canada Operation for two years. Terry is a Korean born Canadian so he can also help with language barrier issues with suppliers. Welcome to Lockwood, Terry! Steve Tidwell joins Benny Howard’s group as Assistant Quality Control/ Safety Manager. Steve brings over 15 years of experience in oil and gas (primarily downstream). Steve explains that he has big plans on how he can contribute to Lockwood’s success by “creating a strong foundation for all employees”. Steve has been “getting to know Lockwood’s culture” and has plans to “improve our corporate professionalism, our consistency, and the overall perception of Lockwood within the industry.” Welcome aboard, Steve!

Corporate Headquarters has gone through some large transformations in the past year, from employee badges to parking stickers and beyond. Yes, it hard to get used to the new rules such as having to show your badge every time you enter or re-enter a building, but the fact is these new rules are in place to protect Lockwood’s assets—which includes our employees. So next time you begin to get annoyed at a new rule or the same receptionist has asked to see your badge for the third time in one day, remember it’s for your safety.

LOCKWOOD SUCCESS STORY Lockwood received a call requesting three 48” valves ASAP. Well, only Lockwood would have such beasts in stock. The call came from a Fortune 500 company and the largest refiner in N. America. Yes, Lockwood plucked them out of instock inventory to rush them to the client. With TY Valves not being on their AML (Approved Manufacturer List) they requested the valves be upgraded to X-Ray quality and be put through helium testing. Long story short: PASSED; pleased, but not surprised; and installed. Another Lockwood success story.

Shelley Shanks, local Houston artist and activist, was commissioned by Lockwood International to create an original mural for the lobby of our new corporate headquarters. This photo does not do justice to how Shelley captured the essence of Lockwood. The piece, Shelley explains is a compilation of Lockwood energy, with the ship channel, a platform, several valves and our core manufacturers being represented. The week following the hurricane Shelley delivered the mural and coordinated its placement. Shelley’s work is displayed in galleries and private collections across the globe. Locally, Shelley’s studio is presenting “opening studios” 10/25/08 6 p.m.-9:00 p.m. At 2101 Winter St. (#30A) (www.winterstreetstudios.net). And Via Colori Festival in downtown Houston 11/22-23/08 for street painting. I have recently gone to California to our Carson Branch (Los Angeles, CA) and worked with Reyes Lopez in APLUS AS400. We covered topics from the basics to Special Orders, to Special Order Change Requests. I am now working with Vanessa Russo at our Montreal Branch remotely. She is the first to be trained using the VNC, and so far all we have covered is the basics of order entry. We will be doing a few hours throughout the days to come and hope this will work well for us with the outside branches. Anyone needing training documentation and instructions can find them following this path: N:\Training\APLUS\AS400\Training Project Coordinator As always, if anyone has an AS400 question or any ideas for improvement, please share them with me….

BRANCH SPOTLIGHT Written by Perry Henderson The Beaumont area has become an exciting place to be during the last year. Economic excitement- we have seen an increase in project spending recently and over the next five years we expect to see spending from $0 to about $12 billion. Employment - the area is seeing major hiring in all crafts for construction and in permanent jobs in the petrochemical and related industries, something that hasn’t happened in 20 years. Weather related excitement - two hurricanes in one year-Humberto and Ike. Lockwood Beaumont is also an exciting place to be. We are growing; our new facility is underway which will take us from 8,000 sq. ft. to 52,000 sq. ft. (Will feature new facility in future edition). Our staff has increased from the original five to a total of eleven today. Lockwood is preparing today for the business of tomorrow. This is our future, now a little about the past. In 2001 Mike Lockwood hired Wayne Revia and I from Redman to open a Beaumont branch to support the new ExxonMobil

contract, we both had done the same at Redman, the prior contract holder. We then located our current building and began the remodeling and started taking orders in September of 2001. Our first two additions were Mary Roedahl, sales and Danny Welch, warehouse manager, both of whom are still with us. Over the years others came, Sylvia Jordan, sales assistant, Acy White, warehouse and delivery, and Thursday Warren, sales assistant. In 2007 Wayne retired and moved to South Carolina with his wife, Bobbette, to join their two daughters and their families, they are still there and enjoying retired life. David Nelson moved over from Houston to take Wayne’s place and brought Donna along as receptionist and administrative assistant. More recently we have added Dennise Becnel, sales, Donice Morace, outside sales and Cathy Falb to our staff. This has produced a very stable group, we have had two people leave over the past seven years, Wayne to retirement and the other to be home with her daughter.

Now for current events: Ike has caused major problems for our customer base. A large client has 3 facilities in our area: 1) Refinery- Parts of the plant had 3-5 feet of water causing damage to electrical goods and a loss of power to the entire facility. The cogen is back up producing power and some units are expected to be in operation by Oct. 3. The downtown office complex received damage and people are being relocated to temporary offices. 2) Chemical Complex- Most of this facility had 7-9 feet of water covering it. Every desk, phone, computer, chair and office were destroyed and recovery is expected to take up to 3 months. 3) Polyethylene plant- No major damage but receives ethylene feed from the chemical complex. Another contract that we service in Orange, Texas. had 3-5 feet of water and is still assessing the extent of the damage. Our building received some roof damage but we are operating at full capacity. What a year we just had and what a future to look forward to.

Growth & Promotions.. Gary Hart & Tim Yon, Corporate Regional Managers Gary Hart I spent a few minutes running Gary Hart down to get his comments on his new position and responsibilities. Gary says with his new promotion to Corporate Regional Manager means his “busy” just got “busier”. Gary says, “there seems to be a new issue every five minutes. Our crews at all five branches that I am responsible for have made this a job to envy. (I am) doing my best right now to get a feel for the nuances of each branch. We have hit some home runs up front that are keeping everyone hopping. We won a $1.5 Million HF project in California, took our first $1.5 on a large project in Montreal, and the crew in Sarnia invoiced their first million in August, just to name a few. Charlotte is busy completing a bid for a large engineering firm that is quite large. We are working hard to land a very nice project for an independent refinery in the Midwest. I want to thank all five of our regional branches for being patient with me as I work to smooth out operation and inventory issues, along with adding key personnel to help with the workloads.

Tim Yon Tim Yon shared some information regarding his new title and responsibilities. He says (about working with the branches), “Lockwood as a company has grown extremely fast and its been difficult, if not impossible, to maintain consistency from one branch’s operations to another. From the customer’s perspective, the perception is we all personally know each other very well, operate in a similar fashion … wear the “same color uniform” so to speak. When in actuality, most branch employees have only “met” other employees via the Newsletter. I hope to bring the branches closer in consistency in regard to operations. Each of the branches has its own strengths and “personality”. One of my goals is for the branches to benefit by leveraging off of the strength(s) of the others, to share information, to exchange ideas and to become stronger by playing as a team rather than individual “franchised” units.

BATON ROUGE

written by Tim Yon

HURRICANE GUSTAV blew through Baton Rouge on Monday Memorial Day and was a “no news” event for the rest of the country but left quite an impact in East Baton Rouge Parish. The warehouse sustained some roof damage and the branch was without power for the rest of the week. With gasoline for the generator in short or nonexistent supply, Mike Owens and Jarrod Owens met Tim Yon in Lafayette with twenty 5 gallon containers of gasoline, another generator and an ice chest with 15 bags of ice. Without the Owens brothers’ “Paul Revere” run, the branch would have had difficulty in responding to our customers needs during the week following Gustav. THANKS! All of Baton Rouge employees were without power ranging from three to five days. Fortunately, no one sustained any significant damage to their homes. Who would have anticipated that two weeks later, the Houston to Baton Rouge supply run would be reversed? After IKE, Houston experienced the same gasoline shortage situation as Baton Rouge did. During the week following Ike, Baton Rouge’s Anthony Anderson met Houston’s Jarrod Owens in Lake Charles with the same twenty 5 gallon containers re-filled with gasoline, 15 bags of ice and 10 loaves of bread. Lockwood is getting bigger, but we’re all still “family”. Baton Rouge recently added Kenny Simoneaux to its staff and “chemistry”. Kenny has about twenty years of experience in our industry and will fill a valuable and much needed role as an on-site employee at a client’s Refinery in Chalmette, Louisiana, but will also call on other facilities in the New Orleans area. Most Baton Rouge employees were already familiar with Kenny and are glad to have him on our “team”.

L O C K W O O D V A L V E S C A N A D A - E D M O N T O N Submitted by Robbie Marler The Sherwood Park branch is undergoing a major facelift to the interior of the building, new paint and flooring throughout. The upstairs of our building, within the next month, will be under construction as we develop a bullpen to house the project sales team, and three offices for outside sales.

submitted by Ruth Boyling, Operations Manager We had our annual “Shindig” customer appreciation party. The theme this year was Mardi Gras. The food, music and decorations were fabulous and we had a great turn out. Cindy Williams, Betty Allen and Tom Lockwood were here to help us show our customers how much we appreciate their business. Unfortunately they had to leave too soon to get back to Houston before the hurricane hit but we all had a great visit with them while they were here. We really appreciate them coming up to support our customers. For the next week it was a bit crazy as we were Houston’s backup operators. During the “Ike Crisis” we got to talk to a lot of Houston left to right: Terry Gibb, Rob Sokol, Ruth customers, friends and especially your worried family members. We hope all From Boyling, Gary Hart, Shawn Monk, Jasen Taylor, Darrin of you that were affected by Hurricane Ike are on the mend. Daamen, and Tom Lockwood.

Charlotte Power Group - Derek Reavis & Ed Maier Our Charlotte facility is experiencing considerable growth within the chemical and power markets along the East Coast. In our third year of operation, we have significantly increased our chemical MRO base and have become active participants in the power sector, both with the E&Cs (Engineers & Constructors) and OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers). Our office personnel … Terry Eads, Steve Price and Chuck Brock, along with project assistance from Cameron Dawe in Montreal … are on the front lines responding to major “Power Technology” RFQs from Fortune 500 companies such as Bechtel, Belco Technologies, Chemtex, E I DuPont, Fluor, Foster Wheeler, Hamon Research Cottrell, Jacobs and URS Washington Division. In preparation for this increased activity, we welcome Randy Elmore to our warehouse staff as we also search for a project administrator/engineer to assist in the development of these project quotations. To support both our MRO and Project capabilities, we are aggressively working with additional established manufacturers within the power marketplace. We are providing our customers with “inventoried” valve products as well as access to increased manufacturing capabilities. As we look ahead, we see additional improvements to our office and warehouse as well as updating our IT and communication skills. Charlotte, MRO and Power, is well prepared to support our customers for the coming construction challenges.

CHICAGO - Matt Cassidy Matt reports that he is eagerly awaiting completion of his branch renovations. He promises to send pictures and write a long and interesting article when completed. He is told the interior is projected to be finished by Halloween 08’, which isn’t that far off.

- Brad Arnold Texas City welcomes Diana Baker to their branch as administrative support. We survived HURRICANE IKE, although some of the surrounding businesses received damage. Lockwood Texas City didn’t skip a beat...Brad, Wilma & Diana are up and running.

In August Lockwood became a Corporate Member of Houston Minority Business Council (HMBC) which is a local chapter of a national organization whose primary purpose is to actively increase business opportunities for minority owned businesses. We proudly join companies such as Exxon Mobil, Marathon, Fluor (and many many more). You will recognize these names as our clients, so we are in extremely good company. These companies all participate and believe in Supplier Diversity. But, exactly, what does that mean? There are several categories of minority ownership – they are African American, Asian American/Pacific Island American, Hispanic American, Person with a Disability, Native American, Veteran/Service-disabled Veteran, and Woman). From these categories a business can hold a certificate as Minority Owned Business Enterprise, Veter/Service-Disabled Veteran Owneed Business Enterprise, Woman Owned Business Enterprise, Small Disadvantaged Business, SBA 8(a) Business Enterprise and HUBZONE Business Enterprise. It will be our job to categorize our vendors, track spending, and allow the opportunity for these companies to do business with us by adding a link to our website for registration, etc. Supplier Diversity language will need to be added to all contracts and purchasing documents. The benefits for Lockwood include possibly better pricing, products and services from these vendors. The fact is that Lockwood already utilizes certified minority owned businesses. By creating a formal program and tracking our total spend with these companies we are not only helping our clients with “the big picture” but also giving back to our local community. The most prominent Supplier Qualification (for certification) is that the firm be at least 51% owned, operated and controlled by a Minority Group Member or by a woman. The certification process isn’t extremely involved or expensive and can reap big rewards for a minority owned business. This will not occur overnight as it is a very large undertaking. Initially there is a lot of preplanning that needs to occur, as well as a Mission Statement and company policies to be developed and signed off on by our Management Team. It will take commitment and follow through by everyone of us but we’ll again be the leader of the pack and hopefully others will follow our lead.

continued from cover

but was amplified by a phenomenon known as “panic buying”. On Bolivar Peninsula, (East of Galveston,) Rollover Pass and Gilchrist were estimated to be between 80 and 95% “gone”. Thus far, 61 U.S. deaths have been reported, and 143 globally. (Update: 111 direct fatalities, 32 indirect, 400 missing www.wiki/hurricane_Ike.com). It will take time for the Gulf Coast to get back on its feet and we all know it will happen, but we also know the face of Galveston has probably changed forever. The last devastating hurricane that hit Galveston was in 1900 www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/flt/t4/rb-l.jpg

when approximately 8,000 people perished (www,nhc.noaa.gov). An unofficial survey was conducted and as of 9/19/08 more than half of all employees are still without power. Literally, the only day Lockwood was totally un-operational was the day Ike descended on the Gulf Coast, Saturday, September 13. Seven days later, 40% of the city is still without power, most schools are still closed, yet Houston has, with Texas-sized might, pulled itself up by its bootstraps and is getting on with rebuilding, without whining.

We were lucky. We have to remember, we were very lucky.

DON’T BE A VICTIM - TWICE It’s a bit easy to fall into the “poor me” attitude after such an event. Make an effort not to be a whiner. If you have no power, at least you don’t have a tree in your living room; if you have a tree in your living room at least you have a house, if you lost your house, at least you have your life. Want to feel good fast? Volunteer – either officially (call 713.853.8802) or go to a neighborhood that needs it, rake leaves, pick up branches. Go pick up at the park near your house.

A vague memory of a study many years ago comes to mind in which every income bracket was asked what they needed to improve their life. EVERY bracket said just a little more and I’d be good”. Remember this….“just a little more” will always be true and forever be unobtainable.

Things we learned from Ike: We are spoiled. Most popular text message after September 13: do u hve pwr Coffee is possible without Starbucks. A teenager can sleep through anything (including Ike). There is a “power dance” that everyone does when their power comes back on. He who has the biggest generator wins.

The

Hurricane Grouchiness Level

The number hurricane of grouchiness level can be calculated by adding the childrenby tiplied and the pets number in aof home days without power, mul quoted y provider’s on thetelephone electricit recording, divided by the number air conditioners of fans or powered portableby your home generator, (however if you were last in line at Home Depot and have no generator then multiply by the daily temperature high for that day reported by the news), then add the number of trips to the wash-a-teria and add the days left until school opens again. Discount by the percentage of time spent at neighbors who have power. Recalculate as often as necessary. A drive-thru meal consists of MRE's* and bottled water.

Having a tree in your living room does not necessarily mean it's Christmas.

MANICURES ARE A SIGN OF CIVILIZATION. If You Are Old Enough to Wear Underwear, You Are Old Enough to Wash It. Peanut butter and jelly is a perfectly acceptable meal for breakfast, lunch and dinner in the same day.

ICE IS A FORM OF CURRENCY.
