Western Light Orchestra Concert Friday 30th November: This will be a special occasion when the Western Light Orchestra will be performing a concert in the impressive 18th Century country house in Wrington called Barley Wood House. Formerly the home of the late Hannah More, the building contains a very special hall which will be the venue for the concert; this will include solos from two very talented artists, singer Kate Eastman and pianist Richard Lennox.

The concert commences at 7.30pm and the tickets are £10 each, available from Barley Wood House or by contacting Amie on 01934 861215. There will be a bar and light refreshments. All the proceeds will be donated to the YMCA to assist in the various projects they promote for young people.

Angels, Shepherds and Sheep Festival Saturday 1st December: SOSP (Supporters of St. Peter’s Church Draycott) invite you to their Angels, Shepherds and Sheep Festival, at St. Peter’s Church, 10.30am - 1.30pm. Unbelievably! Christmas is nearly upon us and as much as I enjoy it (I have 3 school aged children) I feel it would be remiss of me not to provide a little bit of caution in the sometimes-materialistic whirlwind that Christmas has become.

Ask yourself the following questions: • Do you really need to buy for every member of your family, if you do, perhaps you could set a budget or perhaps swap something you already own?

• Use a budget planner to see what you can afford to spend on Christmas, rather than lose track of your spending.

• Try not to borrow for Christmas if you don’t need to, however if you do find yourself going slightly over budget use a 0% credit card.

• If you have children have a look in their rooms and discuss the toys and “stuff” they haven’t used for a year and sell it online or at a Car-Boot sale.

Incentivise them that they can keep any profit and get them to save some of what they have earned.

The value of your investments and any income from them can fall as well as rise and you may not get back the original amount invested.

Christmas Festive Fair Saturday 1st December: Taking place at Winscombe Community Centre, 10am – 12.30pm. As well as the usual festive cheer, there will be lots of unique gifts to buy and the return of the popular present and gift wrapping room! Join Father Christmas for some festive stories and take part in our fun games organised by our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.

There will also be a raffle, tombola and lots of lovely refreshments. All proceeds will go straight to 1st Winscombe Scout Group – helping to create opportunities for young people to learn skills for life!

Cheddar Festive Night 2018 Friday 7th December: Every year the historic village of Cheddar comes alive with the magic of Christmas.

Lights sparkle along the village streets and idyllic Gorge as choirs sing in the streets and late-night shoppers enjoy a glass of mulled wine or satisfying hog roast as roads are closed from the bottom of Cliff Street to the cliffs up the Gorge and the caves are open for candlelight tours.

This is Cheddar Festive Night, an enjoyable experience for all the family with attractions, entertainment and of course brightly decorated shops catering for all tastes. It will begin with a carol service in St. Andrew’s Church at 5.30pm, following which the pubs, shops and cafes will be open late.

There will be a farmers’ market, other stalls and fairground attractions in Cliff Street par Park. Santa will be making his rounds and there will also be land trains up and down the Gorge. Save The Children Lunches Friday 14th December: Save The Children lunches are held every second Friday of the month at 12.30pm in the Shipham Village Hall. Come and enjoy a bowl of hot soup, bread, cheese and pickle, homemade biscuits and tea or coffee. Cost is £3.50 on the door.

Our special Christmas Jumper Day lunch will be held on 14th December, when we will have Christmas songs sung by pupils from Shipham First School.

Don’t fall for e-mail scams Lately we have seen cases of people receiving frightening blackmail, which, unlike most scams, include one of the victim’s real passwords. Typically, the message will then go onto claiming their virus has full access to the victim’s computer and data, regardless of any subsequent password changes, and may threaten to have taken images of the victim via their webcam, particularly during private after-hours activities. The scam message continues to intend to release the incriminating “dirt” they have on the victim to all the victim’s contacts, unless the victim makes an anonymous payment. Pressure is applied to the victim by limiting their time to make payment.

Careful action must be taken. The victim should not reply to the fraudsters, nor make any payments to them. The message should be deleted, but only after the victim makes a note of the stolen password presented in the email, and immediately changes the password for any accounts for which it is used, to something new and completely different. This measure is vitally important and will block out the scammers, but the begging question is how they obtained the victim’s password to begin with. At some previous time, the victim will have received a fake email imitating a service of which they use, such as PayPal, including a website link which requests login credentials, to which the victim fell prey to. This in turn allows the fraudsters to add serious credibility to their threatening blackmail messages by teasing victims with their real passwords.

The most important lesson here is to be always cautious of emails. Always check the real sender address when receiving messages, to ensure they are legitimate. If unsure, don’t provide any credentials. For extra security, invest in a decent firewall system to help reduce risk. Contact us on 07973 536299 for any assistance.
