Welcome to LocalReach Community Magazine...

With the feeling of autumn already with us it is worth reminding everyone that the clocks go back on Sunday 28th October. Before then though, there is plenty available locally from open events for the community centre and Chalice Morris Men, Harvest Supper celebrations and concerts. The local groups need our support both in attendance and behind the scenes; if you haven’t thought about volunteering why not give it a go – it’s a great way to meet new people and help your local community. I look forward to hearing about any forthcoming Christmas fayres that will be happening in November.

Is it time to upsize?

Does it feel as if your house is shrinking as your children are growing? Perhaps you are looking to start a family or are keen on a larger garden for your dog. Whatever the reason to covet more space, deciding to upsize is a big decision.

Firstly, examine what it is you really want. Is an extra bedroom imperative to your family’s needs? You may be seeking an additional bathroom or a downstairs toilet. Are you prepared to compromise on anything else to achieve these? “Having a clear picture on why you need a bigger property is a good starting point,” says Andrew Stoppani of Westcoast Properties in Burnham-on-Sea. “Plans for more space indicate that you have an eye on the future which is sensible. Moving to a new house is a big commitment – you may not want to do it all again in a couple of years’ time.” Try and future-proof the location; proximity to schools or work as your career takes off will need to be taken into account.

There are also financial implications. Not only will a bigger house cost more, with larger mortgage repayments, you’re likely to have to pay stamp duty on its purchase. Maintenance costs tend to be higher too. “Running a larger home is generally more expensive,” agrees Andrew. “You may be moving up a council tax band, plus you’ll have more rooms to heat.” However, the prospect of upsizing offers a good time to review your existing mortgage arrangements. Take professional advice and you may discover a better deal with a new lender.

Whilst your personal circumstances will drive a property upsize, and your budget will determine what you can afford, advice on the property market in your area is crucial. Brean Play Fun Day Supporting Children’s Hospice South West On Sunday 30th September Brean Play will be holding a Fun Day to raise awareness and vital funds for Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW).

Apart from enjoying one of the best indoor play centres in the South West, families will be able to meet volunteers from the Hospice who will be attending with the popular Hospice Tombola and a display about the fabulous work they do. Pete the Rabbit costume character will be meeting and greeting the children during the day, face painting will be taking place and a wheel of fortune offers the chance to win free return admissions to Brean Play or Splash. Events will run from 10am to 4pm.

In the run up to the event visitors will be invited to buy raffle tickets for a chance to win some fabulous prizes donated by local businesses and attractions.

Mike Barsby from Brean Leisure Park said: ‘We wanted to raise funds and more awareness for CHSW because of its work with life-limited children and their families and we hope lots of people will come along, join in the fun and help make the event a great success.’

Music and Cider Festival

Friday 26th – Sunday 28th October Burnham-On-Sea will be hosting a Music and Cider Festival this October with three days of live music and lots of Ciders. The festival takes place from Friday 26th to Sunday 28th October at The Ritz in Victoria Street - coinciding with Saturday’s Burnham Food Festival. The Burnham Cider & Music Festival will feature a wide range of mainly local ciders, including such gems as Westcroft’s Janets Jungle Juice and Mill Whites’ Rum Cask “As well as appealing to local Cider fans, the 2018 Festival will attract Cider and Music devotees to the town from a wide area and is complimented on the Saturday by the EAT Burnham Food Festival.

The Ritz Travers Suite will be the hub of the festival although visitors are welcome to use all of the Ritz bars and there will be some Fabulous live music on stage all through the weekend.” said Manager Paul Hale.

Live music on the Ritz Stage includes Friday evening with Citrus Fox and headliners Raising Cain. The music starts again on Saturday at 1pm with the evening featuring another set from Citrus Fox followed buy a fantastic band ‘The Jury’.

There’s also live music all afternoon on Sunday from 1pm with some brilliant local musicians finishing with a sing along to Geoff Chandler early evening.

Halloween Fun comes to The Walled Gardens of Cannington

Bridgwater & Taunton College’s The Walled Gardens of Cannington will be opening its gates once again for its annual Halloween fun, from Saturday 27 – Wednesday 31 October, 10am – 4pm each day.

Last year’s activities saw hundreds of children and their accompanying adults attend The Walled Gardens, following the pumpkin trail, carving creative pumpkin designs, having their faces painted and enjoying the freedom of the Gardens. This year the event, where fancy dress is strongly encouraged, is sure to be as popular as ever, so it is worth buying your tickets in advance to ensure you don’t miss out!

Tickets to the Halloween activities cost £6 per child in advance and £7 on the gate on the day.

One adult has free admission with one child ticket purchased. Any other accompanying adults pay the general admission price. The child ticket provides entry to the Gardens, a pumpkin, drink and treat. Please note that pumpkins are guaranteed to advance ticket holders, and only whilst stocks last to those bought on the gate. Face painting will have a small additional cost. Saturday 13th October – Autumn Concert in Mark Parish Church The ‘Light Classical Music Sound’ of the Weston Light Orchestra will be making its annual return to Mark Parish Church on Saturday 13th October. The concert will start at 7.30pm. The Orchestra’s selection of music will be light classical in the ‘Palm Court’ style. Admission on the door is £7 (including programme and refreshments).

Accompanied children are admitted free. The Orchestra under its Conductor Paul Beechey will feature popular and local Guest Pianist/Organist Richard Lennox as Soloist and Accompanist.

Saturday 13th October - Burnham and Highbridge Gateway Club Sponsored Walk Members will be doing their annual sponsored walk in Apex Park on Saturday 13th October. The Club which celebrates its 40th anniversary next year, was set up by Mary Farthing who had a son with learning difficulties. Mary, with several other mothers who also had teenagers who needed a safe environment and care for social activities, started the Club at Burnham Area Youth Centre. The club has 60 members - the original ones are now in their 60s.

An annual holiday is held at Butlin’s in Minehead, also a Christmas meal with disco is also organised, and several other events including a visit to the local pantomime and sports tournaments are held. All the helpers and leaders are unpaid volunteers.

Saturday 20th October - Weston Hospicecare Burnham-on-Sea Friends Group Coffee Morning We are currently holding coffee mornings on the third Saturday of the month in the Methodist Church Hall, 10am - 12 noon. All welcome. Come along for a cuppa and cake and a chat. The dates remaining for 2018 are Saturday 17th November and 15th December. The Hospice costs around £4 million a year to run and only receives 20% of this amount from the Government, so every penny we can raise helps this vital local charity.

Saturday 20th October - Brent Knoll Harvest Supper 2018 It’s Harvest Supper time again. Our annual Harvest Supper will be on Saturday October 20th in the Parish Hall commencing at 7.15pm prompt. Music this year is provided by ‘The Fabulous Top Mix’ which will be a great evening of 60s’, 70s’ music and more. Admission is by ticket only, so book early to avoid disappointment. Sunday 28th October – Christmas Craft Fayre

Saturday 3rd November – Vintage Hornby Train Show

The Friends of Berrow Village Hall are organising a Christmas Craft Fayre there on Sunday 28th October from 11am until 2pm. Full English breakfasts and other refreshments will be available. All proceeds go towards the upkeep of the hall.

Train lovers old and young will enjoy the 10th annual Vintage Hornby Train Show to be presented by the Bristol and Somerset Branch of the Hornby Railway Collectors’ Association Limited at The King Alfred School, Highbridge TA9 3EE on Saturday 3rd November. The show will be held in B Block and is open from 10am until 4pm, with last admissions at 3pm. There will be operating layouts in 0 and 00 gauges featuring original Hornby trains “Made in England by Meccano Limited” and other makes, including a large Hornby-Dublo layout “I ‘Ad That”, together with trade stands selling new and used items, and running facilities in both gauges.

Refreshments will be available all day. There is plenty of free car parking on site, with disabled spaces close to B Block and level access for wheelchairs.

Regular Groups and Events Every Saturday Somerset Time for Youth Somerset Time for Youth special/additional needs club runs every Saturday morning from 10.30am - 1pm, either at the Bay Centre, Cassis Close, Burnham-on-Sea or at the Morland Community Hall in Highbridge. Any child/young adult with special/additional needs, aged up to 25 years of age can come along with a parent/carer, (siblings are most welcome to come along and join in).
