Where has the year gone! Lots going on in and around Burnham and Highbridge this month. SASP are looking at establishing a new activity programme, so please contact them directly for more information from the article in this month’s edition. Saturday 1st September – Coffee Morning The next Friends of the Community Centre coffee morning will be held on Saturday 1st September at 9.45am – 11.45am at the Community Centre, Berrow Road, Burnham-on–Sea. There will be nearly-new clothes, books, jigsaws, bric-a-brac, jewellery, handmade cards, raffle and refreshments (including homemade cakes). Please come for a browse and support this friendly monthly event. No admission charge.

Get set for September If you are considering putting your house on the market, September can prove to be an opportune time to list it. Photographs will – hopefully- still show blue skies, your garden remains in flower and late afternoon viewings can benefit from light evenings.

“Think about how your target market will be seeking property at this time of year,” suggests Andrew Stoppani of Westcoast Properties in Burnham-on-Sea. “If your house would suit a family then listing it as soon as the children return to school, after the distraction of the summer holidays, is a sensible choice.” For some buyers looking to upgrade to something larger, the previous Christmas would have proved to be a bit of a watershed moment, with them determined not to spend another in their existing home.

Speaking of December’s festivities, most purchasers at this time of year will be keen to ‘be in by Christmas’ which means that vendors looking to sell need to be placed to move fast.

“Preparing your home now to sell is important,” says Andrew. “During warm weather can be a good time to paint scruffy walls as it dries quickly. The Ritz Bingo!

“Shake your balls up!” is a familiar cry every Wednesday and Sunday at Burnhams friendliest bingo venue -The Ritz Social Club. It’s a great evenings entertainment with callers Alan, Edwina and Tracy at the helm. Fourteen games of bingo (12 on a Sunday afternoon).

All cash prizes and a chance to win extra money on our members snowball games. With drinks served at ‘club prices’ and a selection of freshly ground coffees and tea why not come along and join in the fun! Everybody is welcome. Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th September - The Beach Kite Fest

The 7th Beach Kite Fest is happening on September 8th and 9th and located on the golden sands of Berrow Beach. There is ample parking available at £6 per car and the event itself is free to enter.

We have a main Display Area where kites of all sizes and shapes will be flown, an Arena for the Power and Traction Kite competition run by the UK champions, with mega team flights. There’s food and drink on the beach and in the Beachside Holiday Park above we have bouncy castles, stalls, face painting, cafe and bar and our ever-popular Learn to Fly area where you can try kites for free.

Due to the high tide we will have to close at 4.30pm, but we are running an extra session on Saturday evening with an illuminated Kite Display and live music for a Beach Party from 8pm. Contact BOS Events on 01278 238714 for more information.

Saturday 15th September - Great British Beach Clean – Friends of Berrow Beach

The group meets on the second Monday of the month, at the Catholic Church, Burnham-on-Sea. We aim to provide help, information and advice as well as social activities. We also have a singing group on the second and fourth Tuesdays (this may vary, contact Carole for information on 782428).

There is a holiday theme at the next meeting please bring a photo of a place you have visited; there will be a holiday themed quiz just for fun. Kim will read a short story and some of her poetry. Join the enthusiastic and friendly beach clean group for a special national beach clean this month on Saturday 15th September, meeting at Berrow Parish Hall (by Berrow Church) from 10am, finishing at 12pm with hot drinks and refreshments in the hall. Our aim is to have a glorious beach at Berrow, regularly cleaned, free of debris and potential dangers to residents, visitors, animals and marine life. Please dress appropriately for the weather with study footwear and gloves. Limited pickers are available. Those under the age of 16 must be supervised at all times by a responsible adult. Tuesday 11th September - Burnham Area Evening Flower Club - Autumn Treasures Starting at 7.30pm in the Catholic Church Hall, Highbridge Road, Burnham-on-Sea. We have Tracy Johnson with her demonstration entitled ‘Autumn Treasures’. Come along from 6.45pm and enjoy a complimentary tea/coffee and biscuits. There will also be our usual well-stocked plant stall. Don’t forget our Open Meeting at The Princess Theatre on Monday 26th November. Thursday 20th September - Dementia friendly service feeding body and soul This is a short simple service held on the third Thursday of every month at St. Andrew’s Church, with well-loved hymns and prayers. The service starts at 2.30pm and is followed by refreshments and sandwiches feeding the body and providing time for a chat. It’s a dementia-friendly service and run with the help of volunteers who are dementia friends. Open to everyone, people of all faiths and none. For more information, please contact Rev. We are a small very friendly group who celebrate the passing of the Wheel of the Year. All paths welcome.

We hold our moots on the fourth Tuesday of the month, 7.30pm in the Community Centre, Berrow Road, Burnham-on-Sea TA8 2ET. We have a speaker or topic of discussion each month. Our speaker on 25th September is Brigid Anne McNeal, subject Wild Plants as Medicine. Our speaker for 23rd October is Natalia Ivend, subject Roma (please do not confuse this with Gypsy Romany). We ask for a monetary contribution towards the costs of the room hire and speaker’s fees of around £3. On October 13th we are holding an open day with speakers and workshops.

Every Tuesday - Penguin Swimming Club Perhaps it’s time to start appreciating our bodies and treating them to the numerous health benefits of swimming.

The Penguin Swimming Club is there for the over 60s, meeting weekly at the Sports & Swimming Academy Pool, Berrow Road, Burnham-on-Sea (next to the Community Centre). Our members consist of ladies and gents of all abilities, confident swimmers, less confident swimmers and nonswimmers. They have exclusive use of the pool between 9.30am and 10.25am every Tuesday. To avoid overcrowding, our membership is limited and we maintain a waiting list for potential new members. However, at present we have a small number of spaces available. Every Friday - UKOnline This is a drop-in IT clinic held at the Bay Centre, Cassis Close – every Friday. We are open on a Friday and aim to help our clients solve IT problems and offer them a social meeting place where we can help and support in a relaxed atmosphere. We can support and help with most problems – Windows, Apple, tablets and smart phones. We are open from 10.30am to 12.30pm and again from 1pm to 3pm.

Learn to play Bridge with Winscombe Bridge Club This year we start our ever popular English Bridge Union ‘Bridge for Absolute Beginners’ tuition course on Monday 1st October 2017. We still often find people running older versions of Windows on their computers and laptops, with a relatable but naïve mindset of “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!”. We want to make clear the main reasons to upgrade to Windows 10 instead of sticking to Windows XP, Vista, 7, or even 8. First and foremost, by keeping up-to-date with Windows 10, one maximises their security against infections and attacks; this is not only because Windows 10 was developed later and therefore with a stronger backbone, but also as, being Microsoft’s most current product, Windows 10 will always receive priority support and updates against the latest viruses, prior to older systems which receive subsequent attention. Windows Vista and older no longer receive updates, so should be heavily avoided. This alone makes a strong case for upgrading.
