Food for pleasure

or pain

Eczema is becoming more common than ever and it seems many babies, children and adults have itchy skin. What are the triggers and what can we do to help? What is Eczema?

What food triggers Eczema?

Red, itchy and inflamed skin. It can start on the back of the knees and the inside of the elbows, in worse cases all over the body.

Food additives are hard to escape, they are in most products bought from the supermarket. Flavour enhancers are renowned for itchy skin rashes and the dreaded 600 numbers like MSG 621 & Ribonucleotide 635 can really make one itch.

• Other contributing factors can be dust mites and pollen. What can I do? Firstly food does not 'cause' the effects of eczema, but sometimes it can increase the symptoms. Avoiding some foods can be beneficial. Local residents Andy and Deb Saunders have found a dramatic improvement to their children's skin problems by cutting out food preservatives & additives, salycilates and amines. • Most importantly consult your medical practitioner. • Prick test can be done to determine if your child has allergies to certain foods. • Avoid hot showers or baths and using soap. • Talk to your local health care store for natural products to sooth Eczema like jojoba oil.

Most people's perception of fruit is healthy, but this is not true for some eczema sufferers. Fruits contain salicylates which can be a trigger for eczema. SALICYLATES are a family of plant chemicals found naturally in many fruits, vegetables, nuts, herbs and spices, jams, honey, yeast extracts, tea and coffee, juices, beer and wines. Another natural substance which can upset sensitive people is AMINES. Amines come from protein breakdown or fermentation. Large amounts are present in cheese, chocolate, wines, beer, yeast extracts and fish products. They are also found in certain fruits and vegetables, e.g. bananas, avocados, tomatoes and broadbeans. Age can be the only relief for some children, as most children eventually grow out of Eczema. This information is only a guide, please consult your doctor if you have any other queries.

Look down from the Surf Club at Old Bar and you may see something a little out of the ordinary...

kite

Boardingold bar

A sport which is growing rapidly in Old Bar and around the world...

Mud Bishops attracts Kite Boarders from all over the world & is a popular holiday destination with many tourists visiting regularly from Sydney, Newcastle and internationally. Many professional kiters visit Old Bar to ride the smooth glassy waters & get photo shoots. These articles find their way into national and international magazines which is great for tourism in our area. The sport is growing so quickly due to its simplistic appeal (no pollution, no noise & is naturally powered). The sport gained its popularity

from Surfers who got tired of the messy conditions the summer winds caused on the ocean, which is perfect conditions to kitesurf. Old Bar not only appeals to the flat water enthusiasts but is also perfect for Wave Riding Kite Surfers. Kite boarding is best between September and April during the Summer Sea Breezes. This area is perfect for beginners due to the shallow sand bottom location and safe enclosed nature of the lagoon.

Local NEW business

Equi

A new comer to Old Bar, Carole Isaacs brings a new and natural therapy to our local area.

Balance Bowen

Carole from Equi Balance is another unique person who is passionate about her work. Carole trained with the Equus College in Queensland for 2 years to be an Equine Muscle Release (Bowen) therapist after a decade of working and having horses, it was a natural progression from being a qualified Homeopath to becoming an Equine Bowen Therapist.

Bowen Therapy is a 'non' invasive therapy, Carole works on gentle pressure points to relax the muscles which ultimately relaxes the horse. The gentle moves allow the horse's body to unblock energy pathways leading to improved wellbeing, real healing and greater freedom of movement. Horses really enjoy Bowen so much they often fall asleep during a treatment.

How does Equine Muscle Release (Bowen) Therapy work?

Such complaints can be:

EMRT™ moves work over the fascia (the tissue that covers the muscles and organs over the entire body) and sends messages via the nervous system to release tight muscles and re-program an area of trauma. Most of the moves are situated along the spine where the majority of messages are relayed in the Central Nervous System. When there is injury or trauma, the fascia can harden and restrict the movement of fluids, nutrients and minerals through the body. These restrictions affect all of the systems in the body.

• Muscular – tendon and ligament strains, muscle wastage, uneven muscle development • Skeletal and structural problems • Injury and illness – speeds up recovery through improved circulation • Removal of toxins and lactic acid build up • Mental and emotional problems caused by fear, tension, irritability • Disunited paces Using bowen therapy in conjunction with your Vet is highly recommended.

Protecting Your Fruit & Veggies Neville & So

phia

Now that the hot weather has drastically eased off, thoughts and actions turn to autumn garden preparation and plantings. It’s perfect time to begin raising seedlings of beetroot, carrots,

We have found through trialling a new woven product ‘Vege Net’ on various vegetables and fruit, that there is no need to use harmful sprays or dusts for control of major pests during winter and spring. It works by excluding insects from accessing the plant and unable to lay their larvae on the foliage and in the fruit, as in the case of cabbage white butterfly, moths, fruit fly. It also is a deterrent from birds, fruit bats and protects crops from spoiling and waste. The frame for the ‘Vege Net’ can be easily constructed from irrigation polypipe, conduit or

parsnips, turnip, a broad variety of Brassica’s, onions; brown, white, red and a mixture of oriental greens, peas and broad beans.

timber. Throw the netting over the frame and seal around the base. ‘Vege Net’ is light and durable. Has a UV stabiliser and available in white. Has 8% shade and doesn’t fray. Allows good air flow and water passes through easily. Size of the holes in the woven netting is 3 mm x 2 mm. ‘Vege Net’ can be seen displayed in the garden at Greenpatch Organic Seeds. We have successfully trialled the ‘Vege Net’ in winter and spring on Brassica’s and leafy greens. Grapes, figs, mulberry, raspberry and tomatoes in summer. We harvested fully ripened pest free fruit.

Catch of the Mick Morley Dew Fish, weighed in at 20Kgs, caught in the Manning River @ Bohnock

Y

ou see some funny things when you live next door to a boat launching facility - all manner of pleasure craft - all shapes and sizes, including the owners. Most vessels are launched and retrieved successfully - some are not! The most common problems I see down here at Bohnock are usually :• lost bungs • collapsed trailer wheel • lost winch handles bearings • old fuel lines and • flat tyres on trailers priming bubbles complicated by rusty • leaking fuel connectors wheel nuts and stub • flat batteries axles

...and the list goes on! Lesson to be learned here Fishermen and Fisherwomen - it’s called maintenance - routine maintenance! Make sure you cast an eye over your trailer and boat regularly - rust on wheel studs and any part of your trailer should be dealt with better sooner than later - check wheel bearing and make sure that they’re not “red hot” after you’ve driven to your favourite fishing hole - check all fuel connectors to your motor and tank for leaks when you pressurise the system - make sure your battery is fully charged and in good condition. Hopefully some of these tips might make your fishing trip with the Missus and Rug-Rats a little less stressful and a bit more successful. Time for the big bream to arrive! At this time of year large schools of bream are usually moving up the coast and entering our estuaries - so it’s time to hit the beach and the rivers. The “Bully” Mullet should also be moving in droves - travelling with these fish are usually BIG Jew and big “Noahs”. Preferred bait on the beach and estuary is Mullet fillet and Mullet gut for the bream and stick with your big Squid for the Jew. Both entrances work really well in the Manning - the “Wall” and “Chinaman’s” at Manning Point and Farquhar right up to the first highway bridge. If your fishing the estuaries see if you can pick a “dark” night with the run up to high water from dusk into dark - usually get three to five nights a month at them before you get too much moon appearing.

boating & Fishing

The Luderick should also be around keep in mind the big “Bronzies” have been travelling along the coast and are just as likely to take anything - weed, cabbage off the rocks, nippers and even green prawns - Oh! And remember not to take “Old Bill’s” spot! The 2012 - 2013 NSW Maritime “Better Boating Program” grants have recently been announced and many NSW Councils have been successful in being granted “dollar for dollar” funding to complete improvements to their boating infrastructure - boat ramps, wharfs etc. To give you an idea of how Taree (population approx 16,621) rated with the TWO successful applications submitted by our local governing authority I quickly compared this to Gloucester (population approx 4,877) Councils THREE successful applications - Taree applied for grants to supplement improvements to the value of $45,100.00 and was granted $27,070.00. Gloucester Council applied for funding to supplement $103.500.00 and was granted $51,750.00. Now, this may seem pretty confusing - so to put it “laymen’s terms” Taree applied for and was granted $2.71c per head of population Gloucester Council $21.22c per head! Nearly EIGHT times Taree’s funding! One would wonder who is batting for the residents and visitors that love utilising the Manning River! Ah Well! As a famous prime Minister once said “There are lies, damned lies, and then there are statistics!" Big thank-you to the boys on the dredge for their work along Cowan’s Channel and Farquhar - this work has greatly improved navigation safety in this area. Well done.

Don’t forget Where you hid the Easter eggs!
