Anxiously Anticipating KAABOO, SD’s Hottest Music Festival

KAABOO is one of San Diego’s most anticipated music festivals. Like Coachella, Outside Lands and Stagecoach, KAABOO draws in major crowds every year. The Founder of this spectacular spectacle is Bryan Gordon, who created the events strictly with its guests in mind. From strategic seating areas to a lineup that stands apart from the rest, KAABOO is a destination to venture to this September.

met, our great partnership with the Fairgrounds makes putting on an event of this scale really fun.

CENTER STAGE Q: What does the name KAABOO mean? Bryan Gordon: KAABOO means whatever the hell you want it to mean. It’s an expression of the feeling that wells up inside your gut when you’re just having a purely good relaxed, get-away from it all, genuinely fun time with your friends and family. Q: How did the idea of KAABOO happen? BG: With KAABOO, I had the opportunity to put all of my passions together in one place and satisfy all those interests—music, food, art, and being a gracious host are all very important to me. We set out to create a new type of live event, a concept that catered to a little older, a little more affluent and more discerning audience than the typical event prototype which satisfies a younger crowd (essentially the 17-25 year olds). They do what they do very well but I didn’t think there was anybody addressing this particular niche in the 124 | LOCALE MAGAZINE

market. So I took those matters into my own hands. Q: Why did the Del Mar Fairgrounds feel like the right location? BG: The scenic location and optimal weather in SoCal in September were two driving forces for choosing Del Mar. Also the types of people living in the San Diego and surrounding area are exactly the demographic for KAABOO. They are the people who work hard but play hard too. Then there’s the fact that there’s a gigantic facility with this entire infrastructure at the Fairgrounds that had all these amenities. We noticed, as we went around the country, that a lot of festivals had to build their site from scratch. The Del Mar Fairgrounds has seating, bathrooms, outdoor space and absolutely beautiful architecture. It’s got ample parking around it, along with its own shuttle transportation. Aside from having the logistical needs

Q: How do you explain the KAABOO experience? BG: The KAABOO experience can be described as discovery. Our hope is that individuals discover things that they didn’t know before and that could be in music, in food and wine and craft spirits/beer, in comedy, or in a different brand or service that they maybe might have not known about. We hope our guests walk away from KAABOO thinking their life is better than it was prior to coming. Mostly, we want them to walk away totally recharged and feeling that they were at the beginning of something special. Q: What makes KAABOO different from other festivals? BG: Just about everything at KAABOO is going to be different from what exists elsewhere. The most significant thing is that the entire event is purposely built with this specific target audience in mind. The DNA of this event has been imagined from day one, targeting the guest. That is the most important thing and you will feel it everywhere in every way. Specifically, with respect

to the food and the beverage options, I think that there will be greater variety and quality than is available at many other events of this nature. There will be places to sit and actually enjoy tasting everything, instead of sitting on the ground. KAABOO is curated to present an extraordinary degree of quality, variety and not the everyday stuff that everybody will have been exposed to before, and therefore we are presenting a cabinet of curiosity to people. Q: Who are the main/most anticipated acts performing at each stage? BG: KAABOO’s most anticipated acts include Aerosmith and Jack Johnson, as this will be both of their only US shows this year and Fall Out Boy who is closing their tour at KAABOO. Also, we will bring to the stage Jimmy Buffett who will be returning to Southern California for the first time in four years and Daryl Hall and John Oates who are coming off of their first ever sell out at Madison Square Garden. We are very ecstatic about having a unique lineup that is different than the 2016 festival circuit, so we are very excited for all of the bands and the diversity that this lineup brings for our guests.
