Setting the Scene

Sweet Summertime This Summer, Beers, Best Friends and a Bonfire Are All You Need

editorʼs note Dear Summer, I’ve waited nine arduous months for you—but like every year, you always show up on time. There’s something about your salty waves, warm rays and soft sand between my toes that give me all the goosebumps. My heart flutters when I hear the words “June twenty-something,” knowing that your sun-drenched days and balmy nights are right around the corner. So the next 120 pages, I dedicate to you. Not because you’re perfect, but because you come waltzing in when I’m at my palest. You make me want to stuff my bulky sweaters and everyday worries into a tiny, dark drawer, slather myself in SPF and bask in your glory.

or they “like winter.” It’s like saying you “like cottage cheese” or “you’re happy with an 89%”— trust me, you don’t and you’re not. I’m not saying there isn’t a time and place for a little drizzle, but comparing you to winter is like comparing a pigeon to a peacock. No offense to the pigeons. Now look—I realize this is a very biased letter from a very biased editor. Some folks may love the shift in seasons each year, and that’s A-okay! But despite my “summer is the best” rant, there’s truly something for everyone in this issue. Yes, even the ones who love a good downpour. With love, Kaylin

I never understand when someone says they “like rain”

says, “I knew coming into the shoot that Zion was an extremely talented athlete, but I also learned that he was a wrestler in high school and college. I was a wrestler for 12 years, so it was cool to be able to talk with him about the sport, like what weight classes we wrestled at, go-to takedowns and things like that. Zion even showed me some old videos, and the man can grapple!”

by fashion designer Tyce Psylence—matched seamlessly with the backdrops of the restaurant, making for a cool, tropical vibe. Psylence says, “I enjoyed each of the looks [at the shoot]! The detachable Psylence sleeves are unique, but the Psylence tech vest introduces a new wave of fashion.”

explains, “Zion’s energy and mindset are contagious—I found myself smiling and feeling fired up through the entire interview!” Production manager Lauren Lewellen recalls, “The entire team was hanging out and having fun while getting all the shots we needed.” All in all, it was a successful day of capturing the cover of our June issue! “I’m blessed to be a professional. Not everybody gets to say that they’re one of the best at what they do.” —Zion Clark

Fashion Design PSYLENCE by Tyce @intyceyou | www.thepsylence.com 36 LOCALE MAGAZINE

By all means, Zion Clark could be a real-life superhero. He is the Guinness World Record holder for the fastest man on two hands, is a competitive wrestler and has a theme-song-worthy name that means “highest point.” What’s more, he has the power to motivate and uplift people all around the world.

L

Like most heroic backstories, Clark has experienced tremendous adversity, but his valiant transformation didn’t happen overnight. It didn’t happen because he was struck by a bolt of lightning or was given a super serum like in some of our favorite comic books. Instead, Clark’s powers first came from within, and it was that inner fortitude that allowed him to build his superhuman strength—both physically and mentally. Clark, now 24, was born with a rare congenital condition called Caudal Regression Syndrome, which impairs the development of the lower body; in Clark’s case, this meant his legs. Unable to care for him, Clark’s birth mother put him up for adoption, which landed him in the foster system, and not every home proved to be a positive or safe space for him, sadly. “I never used to be very strong. I got bullied and pushed around. I just wanted to be stronger,” Clark explains. So when he found wrestling, he knew he had found not only his calling but a path towards a better life. “I thought the best way to avoid getting pushed around was by getting stronger and getting faster, and nothing was doing that for me better than wrestling,” Clark shares. “I’ve stuck with it for a very long time—18 years now to be exact.” After 16 long, trying years in the foster system, Clark was adopted by Kimberlli Hawkins, whom Clark credits as being a huge contributor to his success. With Hawkins and his wrestling coach at Massillon High School, Gil Donahue, as his strongest supporters, Clark finally had the foundation and the means to become the force he is today.

“I was blessed with an amazing family at the very last second. You know, there wasn’t a lot of hope for me to have a family, to have a roof over my head,” Clark says. “So with that being said, I was so grateful and finally at peace.” With a focus on wrestling and the forming of his family and support system, Clark’s philosophy began to develop. One mantra that has stuck with him since high school is “no excuses,” which came from a pep talk from Coach Donahue during a particularly intense and difficult wrestling match. By Clark’s senior year of high school, he finished the wrestling season with a record of 33-15–one grueling match away from qualifying for the state championships. Clark was recruited for wrestling by several colleges before choosing to attend Kent State, where he continued to hone his wrestling skills while studying business management. “Wrestling is definitely a big part of my life, but it’s not what I circulate my life around, you know?” Clark says. “I do a lot of other things, but being an athlete has definitely been a fun ride and has helped me achieve my different goals.” Some of Clark’s other goals have led him to become a successful and busy multi-hyphenate, including being the subject of a documentary short, a motivational fitness influencer across several social media platforms, an author and so much more. “I’m blessed to be a professional,” says Clark. “Not everybody gets to say that they’re one of the best at what they do.”

Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover

» Clark considers one of his greatest accomplishments to be publishing his first book, “Zion Unmatched,” which is a beautiful picture exposé. “It’s something that I really felt passionate about and I’ve been working on for the last 2.5 years,” he says.

» Expect more books from Clark in the future! “I’m almost done with my second book and recently started working on my third one,” he shares.

Screen Time

» “Zion,” the documentary short by Floyd Russ, covers Clark’s high school wrestling experiences and was a nominee for the Short Film Grand Jury Prize at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. You can watch the inspiring 11-minute film on Netflix or on Netflix’s YouTube channel.

LOCALE MAGAZINE 39

“As soon as you accept yourself, be yourself and embrace your differences, your quality of life is going to get better.” —Zion Clark

B

Beyond his physical goals and achievements, Clark wants to use his platform to help people become stronger versions of themselves and to live their lives more authentically, encouraging people to lean into what makes them different rather than backing away from it. In Clark’s book, “Zion Unmatched,” he writes: “Technically, I’m disabled, but I refuse to see my body as less than whole. There is a difference between not having legs and believing you are missing something, and I can’t miss what I never had.” Rather than making excuses for what he would be able to accomplish, Clark pushed himself and set a high bar. That’s a perspective that anyone, regardless of physical condition or insecurities, can learn from. “At the end of the day, you are you. There are 7.8 billion people on this planet walking around. You’re going to be different. So just accept it and move forward with your life,” Clark advises. “The longer you wait, the longer it takes you to accept you. As soon as you accept yourself, be yourself and embrace your differences, your quality of life is going to get better.” While some of Clark’s most obvious superpowers would be his strength and his determination, another one is his willingness to dream big and trust that he will make those dreams a reality. According to Clark, accepting oneself might be key to having big goals and the perseverance to accomplish them, but having the right people around you is also an important factor. “My mind is very active. I’m constantly thinking, constantly looking for ways to improve myself and the people around me,” Clark says. “Plus…having a good support system and a good team around you makes realizing your ideas so much easier.”

40 LOCALE MAGAZINE

“I did a lot of successful things by myself,” Clark continues. “But as I’ve built my team over the last four years, we’ve stepped into a whole new level of doing things.” Despite touching the hearts of current, future and non-athletes from around the world, Clark remains humble and focused on his goals. “I never came out doing this with the intention of being an inspiration. I was getting traction and attention because I was an athlete having success on a level that most people don’t get to—even with legs,” Clark says. “It just kind of blew up and people were getting inspired by what I do. And I didn’t even realize that at first, but over the last couple of years, I’ve realized ‘Oh, wow, I’m out here really changing lives,’ and it feels great.” Like his name prophesizes, the world can be sure he’ll hit his highest point—whatever he chooses that to be. For now, Clark, who became a San Diego resident in 2021, has his eyes set on becoming an Olympian and continuing to share his story through social media and his writing. And with his mindset and drive, only great things are soon to follow. “It is honestly a good feeling to have somebody come up to you and say, ‘Seeing you do this got me out of bed. Seeing you do this stopped me from committing suicide.’ I’ve heard all of it, and it’s very humbling, you know? It puts it in perspective for me,” Clark reflects. “That’s why wherever I am, I’ll try to sell my best side at all times. That’s the way to do it. And don’t get me wrong, I have those days where I’m not perfect. I have those days where I’m going through crap just like everybody else, but I do have influence that can affect everybody on a worldwide scale—and that’s what I want to do.”

When the pandemic hit, Betsy and Zach Smith, a hair colorist and fashion designer, respectively, were forced to find new ways not just to survive but also thrive as valuable members of their community. They combined their talents and dreams into one: the newly minted shop and hair salon, Second Place Co.

»

During the pandemic, Betsy, like most hair stylists, was not able to work. Her focus at that time shifted from in-house services to educating her clients on ways to take care of their hair at home. When other hair salons were closing doors, Betsy sought a new beginning. So without skipping a beat, she and Zach found their own brick-andmortar space and divided it into a hair salon and a boutique for their own brand in November 2021. Betsy has one employee in her salon who specializes in cuts while she manages the coloring side of the business.

As for Zach, he now works with manufacturers from Los Angeles to partially produce the company’s own brand of vintage-inspired workwear. “Our flagship products feature vintage materials and designs. We didn’t want our apparel to support fast fashion; rather, we wanted items that could stand the test of time,” says Zach. Today, Second Place Co. offers an assortment of vintage-inspired pants, caps, jackets, tees and other items that are mostly made in the US using high-quality materials. “So far, it’s been great,” says Zach. “We feel really connected to our town and neighbors. We always keep the space full of energy and bustling with creativity.”

Grooming the Young

• The youngest business partner at Second Place Co. is the couple’s 5-year-old son, River. “River has his own little sticker shop within our shop, and his profits are saved in a college fund,” says Zach.

Supporting Fellow Creatives

• Second Place Co. offers free space quarterly to local artists to exhibit and sell their

work. Zach says the company benefits from having beautiful, local art on the walls and from fostering a sense of community within the space.

Learn From the Best

• Betsy Smith has big plans for the future and hopes to focus more on education. She aims to host training events geared toward helping hair stylists grow as both artists and business people.

Teller is a local Los Angeles boutique that allows you to shop all of your favorite brands at one convenient location. Situated in Culver City’s upscale Platform shopping center, Teller offers a luxurious shopping experience in the heart of LA. According to founder Rebecca Kim, “LA is home to some of the coolest, most creative women on the planet. We are endlessly inspired by the personal style of women in our town and wanted to create a space where they can come and discover special pieces. We’re rooted in LA but have a global wandering eye and love to find independent brands and share them with our community.” Though they hadn’t planned on opening up their multibrand store for a few more years, the pandemic gave Kim and her husband the push they needed to simply gear up and go for it. In addition to offering some of the most unique and stunning independent brands (over 70 hand-

picked labels), just stepping foot into the store offers a lavish experience of its own. “Our designer, Mike Moser, played with layered colors and textures, highlighting a brutalist finish of troweled plaster walls and columns,” explains Kim. “In order to engage the height and scale of the 2,800 square-footspace but still create an inviting warmth and sense of discovery, Mike employed dramatic curved lines and intimate alcoves throughout the store.” As for her personal favorite item, Kim says it’s the Jaime Tee. “[It’s] our perfect cotton crew neck designed in-house. It’s exciting to see customers come back and buy it in additional colors.” From fashionable footwear to elegant accessories, Teller goes beyond clothing to bring customers a comprehensive experience that encourages them to embrace their personal style. The shop is without a doubt one of the best spots in LA for those looking to give their wardrobe a little love.

A Stunning Setting

• From the tiled shelves to the curved couches, Teller is without a doubt one of the most beautiful clothing stores in Los Angeles. After gathering inspiration from 1930s Mexico City and Luis Barragán, Teller was turned into a chic and transportive oasis.

AISHA ROSS EMPHASIZES THAT LESS IS MORE THROUGH SMALL-BATCHED CREATIONS

Written By: Ameihia Turingan Photos By: Aisha Ross and Cory Gehr

F

Founded in 2020, Less Is More carries an array of sustainable clothing that includes vintage and thriftwear along with pieces designed in-house. Intended to “bring awareness to sustainable fashion,” founder Aisha Ross focuses on selling small batches and being intentional when developing pieces and curating vintage collections. Ross’ passion and industry training helped lay the groundwork for her business. She discovered a love for vintage and secondhand pieces after frequenting thrift shops with her parents as a kid. With lifelong dreams of being a designer, she studied fashion design before returning home to California to pursue opportunities in retail and apparel management. “That really helped me learn a ton about the behind the scenes of apparel production and showed me how wasteful it can be,” mentions Ross. When her apparel manufacturer job folded, Ross chose to pursue Less Is More full-

time. “I always wanted to be more creative and work for myself… so I just really took a risk and decided to [do it],” says Ross. With Less Is More, she sells items like tote bags, crewnecks, socks, outerwear, dresses and accessories that are primarily for women and vintage enthusiasts. Her items usually come in signature neutral and earthy tones. For her inhouse cut and sew items in particular, she typically draws inspiration from vintage pieces, her travels and friendships. Ross always creates products with the intent to make one-of-a-kind pieces that help the wearer feel comfy and confident.

Enter The Garden

• In addition to the in-house Less Is More collection, Ross developed a sub-brand called The Garden, which is inclusive to men and features both earthy and colorful tones. “I had a lot of male friends wanting some vintage for themselves… I thought of that name because my boyfriend is really good at gardening, and we have a garden in our backyard,” says Ross.

Overall, Ross emphasizes “building community” throughout every touch point of her business. From investing time in Instagram to sharing styling tips and hosting pop-ups throughout Orange County, she’s been able to foster and develop a community of like-minded individuals who believe in the value of sustainable fashion.

For the ultimate retail experience in Rancho Mirage, look no further than Rancho Relaxo. Owner Stella Adena has been in the world of retail and fashion for 15 years, hosting an array of one-of-a-kind brands that create items that are both beautiful and functional. The roadrunner is the official symbol of Rancho Relaxo, as it became an image for her shop that radiates optimism and good vibrations like her brand. “My store is really a celebration of desert life. I curate around the theme of ‘desert modern,’ which is an aesthetic that has really resonated with my customers—both local and from out of town,” says Adena. Rancho Relaxo features merchandise from local vendors and artists, ranging from clothing and accessories to home decor and apothecary items. So whether you’re looking to furnish your home or update your wardrobe, there is a little something for everyone. Recover makes her best selling original logo tee from reclaimed cotton and recycled bottles. Both the garment and the fabric are made domestically in North Carolina. Not only does Adena wish to promote the desert lifestyle with her pieces, but she also strives to empower craftsmen through commerce and connect her customers to the artisans she loves. “The Coachella Valley is part of a cultural zeitgeist. Having an assortment of local artisans and vendors that pay homage to the desert has really been a successful formula.”

It’s no secret that Aarti Sequeira has made a multifaceted name for herself. Some of her titles include reality

competition show winner, cooking show host, cookbook author, food personality, former producer and journalist—and on top of all that, she’s also a wife and mom. As a thirdculture kid, it’s not surprising that Sequeira has a gift for juggling these identities, but her upbringing has also given her a special perspective on the relationship between home, culture and family recipes. Long before becoming a Food Network mainstay or a cook, Sequeira had a special relationship with food. Born in India, raised in Dubai and taught in a British school, her palate wove an intricate, multicultural tapestry that celebrated food. “Cooking is such a huge part of my family’s identity,” Sequeira explains. “It was really tied into a reminder of where we came from. [It was] how we lived every day, how we celebrated things, how we went through things and how we stayed connected to our roots.” After finishing her schooling and watching the Gulf War unfold in the early 1990s, Sequeira discovered a passion for journalism and attended Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. She later worked as a journalist for CNN, then as a producer for HBO’s “Sand and Sorrow,” a documentary that covered the genocide in Darfur. Then in her early 30s, Sequeira’s life began to shift gears. “I had gotten married and moved in with my husband, and I was unemployed. That’s when I really started cooking,” she says. After interning under James Beard Award-winner Suzanne Goin at Lucques in West Hollywood, Sequeira began her own cooking vlog, “Aarti Paarti.” Then, with her husband’s encouragement, she auditioned for 98 LOCALE MAGAZINE

season six of “Food Network Star,” won the competition and has been a TV personality ever since. “It’s extraordinary,” she beams. “I can’t say it’s been a dream come true because I don’t think I ever dared to dream that this could happen.” Despite all her accomplishments, Sequeira has experienced her fair share of self-doubt. “I have always really struggled with imposter syndrome,” she shares. “That’s because I didn’t go to culinary school, and I didn’t work in restaurants for years. So when I started making these cooking videos, it was almost like an experiment—I was doing it because something in me was compelling me to do it,” Sequeira continues. “I remember the first time that someone hired me to make cooking videos; there were cameras in my tiny little studio apartment in LA, and [I thought], ‘Oh my gosh. I’m getting paid to do this. Maybe this is something that God’s made me to do.’ I think that was the first moment where I thought, ‘It doesn’t matter what I think is the right way to go about things.’ I think that this is something that’s been ordained for me, and I just have to trust that.” Trusting herself and having faith have served Sequeira well; she’s amassed an impressive stack of professional triumphs. Among them: hosting “Aarti Party” and “Hidden

Sequeira’s MustHave Ingredients » Five ingredients

Sequeira always has on hand are ginger garlic paste, cumin seeds, basmati rice, eggs and a spicy condiment like harissa, gochujang or spicy Indian mango pickle.

The Best Thing She Ever Ate (in LA) » “I would drive miles to a restaurant called Sticky Rice in Grand Central Market for their Khao Soi. It’s a soup with a ton of really warm spices in it…There is so much flavor and texture and warmth—it’s euphoric.”

toughest dishes for Sequeira to master were the traditional curries that she grew up with. “Not because they’re complicated,” she says, “but I have a little mental block about it. I’m like, ‘Oh gosh, how can I possibly make it as well as my mom and my grandmother did?’”

To the Next Generation of Chefs » “It’s such a gift,

what we get to do. When we feed people, it’s one of two things: you’re feeding them [and] meeting them in their need, or it’s a special occasion. You, by virtue of the food you’re serving them, get to be part of their lives for that moment. These are two really precious things that we get to do.”

Eats,” winning “Chopped All-Stars,” “Cutthroat Kitchen All-Stars” and “Guy’s Grocery Games” as well as creating her own cookbook (with a second one on the way soon!).

“Food was such a huge part of how we lived every day, how we celebrated things, how we went through things and how we stayed connected to our roots.” —Aarti Sequeira

While her career teems with swiftness and excitement, Sequeira hasn’t forgotten to celebrate and appreciate what food means to her at her core, and that’s the beauty of coming together. So many of her important memories revolve around bonding over food, from her grandmother, Winnie, winking at her over freshly churned butter as a young child to enjoying granola with her husband and her eldest after swimming on a hot day. Sequeira sees food as a vehicle for connection—not only across cultures but across generations. Now as a mom to her own multicultural kids, she’s even more determined

to keep those special family recipes alive and help others do the same. Inspired by her mother’s and her own recipe journals, Sequeira created a Family Recipe Journal so others can document their home’s unique traditions and flavors. “These recipes connect us to our family, whether we’re sitting at the table eating with them or not, whether they’re with us or they’ve passed, whether we knew them or we didn’t,” Sequeira notes, adding that one of her daughters is already interested in filling the recipe journal with her own creations. “Food is unbelievably powerful. It’s one of the few things that can really connect us across time and space,” Sequeira says. “When we eat together, we are not in our heads at all. It’s a really visceral, soulful experience.”

Quite possibly one of the crown jewels of South Coast Plaza, the glamour of Knife Pleat fits right in with the likes of neighboring boutiques like Oscar de la Renta, Canali and Chanel. Created by Chef Tony Esnault and restaurateur Yassmin Sarmadi, this eatery has all the elegance and modernity to keep up with its chic French cuisine but is presented in an approachable, SoCal-friendly manner. Patrons can choose among special tasting menus, prix-fixe dinners, lunch, afternoon tea and a fun cocktail menu named after some familiar designer labels.

Hana Re Featuring dishes that allow the freshness of their ingredients to take center stage and shine, Hana Re offers a quiet and maybe unexpected oasis inside of the bustling LAB AntiMall. While it may be a hidden gem, Chef Atsushi Yokoyama works with ingredients that are anything but semi-precious. Pull up a seat at the omakase bar to watch Chef Yokoyama work his magic by creating artistic dishes out of luxurious ingredients like kegani, A5 Tajima Wagyu, conch and sea urchin. And don’t forget to ask the staff for sake pairings!

With Chef Carlos Salgado’s vision and goal to honor his heritage, Taco María marries Mexican and American cultures into what can only be described as Alta California cuisine. The menu is made up of a careful selection of Mexicaninspired dishes, such as aguachile, mole de pato, arrachera, piloncillo and, of course, the restaurant’s signature housemade blue corn tortillas. Chef Salgado sources heirloom varieties of corn from small Mexican farms, then nixtamalizes and processes the masa in-house to create tortillas you won’t soon forget.

ORANGE COUNTY Michelin-Starred Restaurants

As the first restaurant in San Diego to be given the honor of two Michelin Stars, Addison—led by Chef William Bradley—pushes the envelope of San Diego’s gastronomy scene. Addison features a revolving nine-course tasting menu that changes with the seasons in order to celebrate regional ingredients at their peaks. With each dish, the staff will suggest a wine pairing to enhance the dining experience, and you can certainly trust that recommendation—Addison has upheld the standards of the Wine Spectator Grand Award for 12 years in a row.

Seeing the way people truly transform from the time they arrive to the time they leave brings me the most joy. I love good hospitality and am really good at curating people; I call it human horticulture.

“...AS A VIEWER, I NEED TO HAVE AN EMOTIONAL INVESTMENT, OTHERWISE I’M CHANGING THE CHANNEL. I WANT TO BE PART OF THE DATE AND PART OF THE BUILD UP. VIEWERS WANT TO GO ON THAT RIDE.”

AS SEEN ON TV Reality programming has been Ryder’s bread and butter, including spin-off shows in the early aughts on Viacom’s VH1 network, such as “Brandy & Ray J: A Family Business” and “Bad Girls All-Star Battle,” but he’s also executive produced for beloved scripted series like “The Purge” and “Hawaii Five-O.”

—JOJO RYDER

JoJo Ryder is at the top of his game. The executive producer and entertainment visionary helped pioneer toprated shows like “The Bachelor” into ratings bonanzas, as well as served as the mastermind behind some of the most popular programming in the dating and reality realm—including “For the Love of Ray J” and “Bad Girls Club.” All told, Ryder is an unstoppable force, and he has no plans of slowing down his cinematic career any time soon. 122 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Ryder skyrocketed his way through the world of television, cementing his status as a bonafide hitmaker, who—despite his impressive IMDb page, Instagram following of 548k, a perfectly polished turn on the cover of Harper's Bazaar and cadre of celebrity pals—comes across as pleasantly unpretentious, refreshingly genuine and irrefutably likable. But before working with some of the biggest fish in town and crafting binge-worthy content around some of the best-known folks in the Metaverse (like Blac Chyna, Lamar Odom, Akon and Tina Knowles), Ryder began his career as an intern at Paramount Studios, where he set out to make a name for himself. No stranger to the hustle, Ryder learned the tricks of the trade, becoming a multi-faceted tour-deforce through experience from different roles and vantage points. “In the entertainment world, you have to wear different hats,” says Ryder. “If you don’t have all these experiences in different fields, then you can’t be the best version of yourself and the best creator that you can be.” In 2007, after impressing the higher-ups at Paramount with his creativity and out-ofthe-box vision, Ryder was recruited to bring fresh eyes to the ABC network juggernaut, “The Bachelor.”

“Back in the day, dating shows were more dialogue driven,” Ryder explains. “How do we get viewers more invested in the storylines and in the characters? I said, ‘Why are we just showing them sitting and talking? Let’s take them on a journey.’ Because as a viewer, I need to have an emotional investment, otherwise I’m changing the channel. I want to be part of the date and part of the build up. Viewers want to go on that ride.” Ryder had the magic touch, and a youthful audience flocked to the franchise. “My milk and honey is the [age 17-35] demographic,” says Ryder. “The reason why networks want to work with me is because that’s the heartbeat of my viewership. We were doing fun stuff that younger audiences were watching, and it really set the tone and took [“The Bachelor”] to another level.” While riding the Bachelor wave, Ryder’s good friend Ray J was making headlines for his romantic liaisons with Kim Kardashian—then a relative newcomer to the zeitgeist. Concerned that public opinion had created a false impression of his pal, Ryder wanted to show the world a different side of the “Sexy Can I” singer. In 2009, “For the Love of Ray J” hit the scene, showcasing the hip-hop artist’s search for true love—with Ryder at the helm as producer. The show was a familiar concept,

featuring a bevy of female contestants vying for a shot at Ray J’s heart, but Ryder brought a unique approach.

DIGGING DEEPER Ryder’s new series, “Cooking With Chyna,” aims to give a fresh look at public fixture Blac Chyna. “Chyna is a brand, but there’s another person named Angela White [Chyna’s given name],” Ryder says. “She’s a mother; she’s a business owner. [Like with Ray J] I said, ‘The world doesn’t know you the way I know you, and I want the world to see what I see.’” STRIVING TO INSPIRE “We’ve all been through something, and his story is a story of resilience,” Ryder says of his new docu-series centering on basketball legend Lamar Odom. “It’s a story of hope. And a lot of people are going to be inspired by it.”

“I said, ‘Instead of shooting it like a [regular] reality show, I want to shoot your show like a movie,’” Ryder explains of the collaboration. “‘We’re going to use movie cameras, we’re going to have you on private jets, going on yachts, and really do it big, like the movies.’” The show turned out to be a smash hit. “When I say that show was a wildfire, it was a wildfire. I had executives who never wanted to pick up the phone, who didn’t want to give me meetings, all trying to have me sign contracts and do studio deals.” Since those early days, Ryder has branched out into feature films like 2014’s “American Heist” and the upcoming Diane Keaton-driven comedy, “Mack and Rita.” He’s also focused on documentaries for social justice, such as “Incorruptible,” which is about the fight for democracy in Senegal. He has also maintained his unscripted presence with new series like “Cooking with Chyna” and “Talks with Mama Tina,” as well as a docu-series about legendary LA Laker (and another Kardashian family-ex) Lamar Odom. “I think the future is bright,” Ryder says. “This industry is giving the power back to creators and giving the power back to visionaries. When I started out, we didn’t have Instagram, we didn’t have TikTok. Now there are so many creative people that are able to share their perspectives.”

“IN THE ENTERTAINMENT WORLD, YOU HAVE TO WEAR DIFFERENT HATS… IF YOU DON’T HAVE ALL THESE EXPERIENCES IN DIFFERENT FIELDS, THEN YOU CAN’T BE THE BEST VERSION OF YOURSELF AND THE BEST CREATOR THAT YOU CAN BE.” —JOJO RYDER

ON SET OF “HOUSEBROKEN” WITH CESAR MILLAN AND PARIS HILTON

As for what’s next for the reality mogul? “Reality will always be part of my life, but doing a show just to get ratings doesn’t do it for me anymore,” Ryder says. “It can’t just be wild and crazy; there has to be an end goal where we inspire somebody. The goal is to keep growing, put out great content, work with great talent and hope that the viewers relate to it.”

On Set Photography - Brandon Bolosky

ON SET OF “COOKING WITH BLAC CHYNA”

LEAVE THE STATUS BEHIND “Talks With Mama Tina” gives a voice to the woman who blessed the world with the icon that is Beyoncé, featuring heart-to-heart conversations with guests like Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish. “I loved seeing how [Tina] was able to talk to these celebrities and give them a safe zone,” says Ryder. “You didn’t see them in a celebrity light; you saw them at their most vulnerable, really human to human.”

What started as a humble venture over half a century ago has blossomed into one of the most highly regarded familyowned businesses. Fletcher Jones Motorcars in Newport Beach has been proudly serving Southern California as the nation’s No. 1 volume luxury automotive center for numerous years. With awardwinning personalized services, fivestar amenities and a team of experts always ready to serve, Fletcher Jones continues to honor its legacy of excellence by offering a one-of-a-kind luxury experience. Now, as Fletcher Jones looks to the future, it’s clear that this is still just the beginning of the company’s journey. With the grand opening of their new Commercial Van and Outfitter Center following the reintroduction of their specialized client perks and services, “Fletcher Jones continues to redefine the luxury automotive experience through the simplest of means: exemplary customer service and good old-fashioned hard work,” says Eric Rosenthal, business development manager with Fletcher Jones. And with the inclusion of their increasingly expansive “field of dreams,” which offers nearly every Mercedes-Benz model produced, Fletcher Jones is a one-stop shop for car connoisseurs throughout California and the entire West Coast.

124 LOCALE MAGAZINE

Fletcher Jones’ distinguished presence as a top-tier employer and prominent pillar of the Newport Beach community has led to the dealership receiving the MercedesBenz “Best of the Best Gold Laurel Award” on four separate occasions in recent years—an award that honors “leadership at its finest” and is only given to dealerships that continually go above and beyond for their clients, team members and community. What really sets Fletcher Jones apart and helped lead to its No. 1 ranking for 23 years straight is the company’s educated, experienced and professional team of licensed experts. With a team that speaks more than 14 languages, the people, relationships, reputation and resources necessary to locate and acquire the vehicle of your dreams can all be found at Fletcher Jones Motorcars, Newport Beach. “We either have it, can get it or will build it for you… If the vehicle of your dreams isn't the vehicle in your driveway, we can help. We are family-owned and operate the No. 1 volume Mercedes-Benz and Audi Centers in the nation. Our accolades and achievements often afford us special privileges, which we have worked very hard to earn— privileges which usually work in our guests’ favor,” says Rosenthal.

• “Fletcher Jones prides itself on continuing its longstanding legacy of active, generous philanthropy, as exemplified by our everpopular ‘Drive For a Cause’ event. This event recently raised nearly $60,000 for the Susan G. Komen breast cancer research foundation,” explains Rosenthal.

They’ve Got You Covered

• Aside from offering complimentary car washes and detailing services, Fletcher Jones provides vehicle pick up and drop-off services, complimentary electric-vehicle charging and shuttles to and from the airport and other destinations in the local area.

Luxury Experience

• “As we take a visionary look into the next decade, we remain hyperfocused on our guests’ experience. We are consistently exploring and embracing new technologies to promote the most efficient and purest luxury experience possible while staying true to the backbone of our business: the people and relationships,” says Rosenthal.

How Ranch Owner Nicole Granato Built a Holistic Lifestyle From the Ground Up in the Heart of Yucca Valley Written By: Kandace Cornell Photos Provided By: Holistic Ranch

grounds of the Holistic Ranch rental property as a fun part of the guest experience. Granato plans to rescue more horses and hopes to have some available for adoption soon.

[on the ranch] is either a vintage piece or something we made ourselves. We’re not surrounded by plastics and synthetics, but rather real earth materials,” Granato says.

Nicole Granato

Founder and Creative Director of Holistic Ranch

For Nicole Granato, Joshua Tree isn’t just a place—it’s a way of life. Since officially leaving Los Angeles behind for a more organic existence in Yucca Valley, the New York native-turned California girl has been building her dream life in the desert, committed to the practice of sustainable and regenerative living, as well as saving horses from slaughter. Three years ago, she founded Holistic Ranch—an idyllic retreat, built and designed with only the purest, nontoxic elements, which is also home to nearly 20 rescued horses and is the sister location to their nearby organic grocery. The ranch was a dream she shared with her Australian-born husband, Khan, which they are now 128 LOCALE MAGAZINE

growing together, along with their two-year-old son, Finn, who is soon to become a big brother in July. “Our intention with the house was to create a more holistic living space,” explains Granato. “We were really cognizant of the chemicals that we were using when designing the home, and how we were connecting inside and outside elements of the earth and our surroundings.” Designing the space with only natural, non-toxic ingredients was the plan and the catalyst for an additional property, which is available for guests to book online. “It’s kind of like entering a space where every element is considered

» Growing food is another

piece of Granato’s future plans. “It’s very hard to grow here, because it’s the desert, but we know that will be a piece of the next phase,” she explains.

“We want to have people come and experience what a truly clean environment feels like. We want them to sleep in it, spend time in it, and when they leave, we hope they feel the difference within their bodies and feel inspired to make changes.” — Nicole Granato

in how it’s contributing to your mental and physical health,” Granato explains. “Every piece of wood is real wood. We don’t use laminate, and we don’t seal our wood with any toxic sealers. Everything is sealed with beeswax. Our walls are lime plastered and are actually purifying the environment from any toxins. We have a reverse-osmosis tub for soaking. We don’t have TVs in the house because the environment is what we want people to absorb.” Devices aside, Granato believes in creating an environment that feels as luxurious as it is organic. “There’s a mentality that you have to live in a yurt or sacrifice the beautiful things and luxuries that [we all] love in order to have that lifestyle, and that’s just not the case. [That kind of] space can still be beautiful and warm and modern and simple.” One day, back when the couple was newly married and en route to move into their desert home, they passed by a farm where two horses were

headed for a slaughter truck. They brought their new four-legged family members home and have continued to rescue and rehabilitate many more, using a unique process of breathwork and sensation training to soothe those that have experienced significant trauma.

Store, which Granato and her husband opened in October 2021. The modern grocery is stocked with wellness products and provisions like organic jams, chocolate and maple syrup, as well as smart snacks, sustainable clothing, specialty supplements and adaptogens.

“We give them about three months without asking anything of them,” Granato explains. “All we’ll do is feed them and touch them; we won’t even put a halter on them. It’s all just about letting them decompress. Then [when they’re ready], we’ll start doing some gentle work with them.”

Granato has no plans of slowing down and is working on expanding with another property while also preparing for the family’s newest arrival this summer.

Granato also keeps the horses in a herd to allow them to exist in their natural habitat and nurtures them with natural, holistic food to facilitate their shift from an anxious state to a happy and healthy one. She hopes to soon incorporate the horses into an interactive part of the ranch’s guest experience. Another piece of that experience is the nearby Holistic Ranch General

“My dream is to have the windows open and let the horses peek their heads in,” Granato says of the peaceful home birth she’s planning. As for the ranch, Granato hopes to give guests a one-of-a-kind, holistic experience. “We want to have people come and experience what a truly clean environment feels like. We want them to sleep in it, spend time in it, and when they leave, we hope they feel the difference within their bodies and feel inspired to make changes.” LOCALE MAGAZINE 129

Good for the SOL HOW TO SPEND A SUN-DRENCHED WEEKEND IN “THE WEST’S MOST WESTERN TOWN”

• The flight from Santa Ana to Phoenix is under an hour, gate to gate. I waited five minutes for my Lyft right outside the terminal doors, and as soon as they opened, warm air pushed against my skin, reaffirming my decision: I was in the right place. www.skyharbor.com

Written By: Erin Price-Hale

“Is it just me, or has this late spring been especially chilly?” I asked my husband on one particularly cold and foggy morning back in April. Yes, we are blessed with California sunshine most of the time, so you’ll rarely catch me complaining about our weather, but I really needed to physically warm my bones. And as a mother and wife, I also needed a break that would reset my connection and help me regain my zest for life. I decided on a whim to get away— by myself—that week. I found a flight leaving Thursday to Scottsdale, Arizona, hoping a weekend in the desert would warm my soul.

Noon Wine O’Clock

• Downtown Scottsdale is a winetasting destination (I suppose I make any place I travel one!). In the heart of the entertainment district, there are six tasting rooms within walking distance of each other; this is known as the Scottsdale Wine Trail. I dined at Merkin in Old Town Scottsdale, and after trying a flight of white, red and rosé, I ordered myself a glass of irresistible syrah. Did I mention how much more fun shopping is after a few glasses of wine? www.merkinvineyards.org 142 LOCALE MAGAZINE

The Mercantile

• After a few glasses of vino, I came across a desert- and seainspired boutique with everything from apparel and accessories to gifts and home decor. After browsing here for a bit, I made my way to The Mercantile—a quaint indoor market collective with products from over 100 local vendors. I left with a new candle, coffee mug and scarf! @leelamarket | www. themerchantileofscottsdale.com

• The Instagram stalking I had done prior to my arrival had not prepared me for such a lush green resort in the middle of the desert. I was really expecting saguaros and sand, but The Scott Resort & Spa had an airy vintage feel that transported me to New Orleans (without the humidity). I was on my own schedule, and it felt great. Snapping out of my dream state, I realized I needed something to eat. I left my bags at the front desk and hopped in an Uber. www.thescottresort.com

At MacDonald’s Ranch, entry is free and you’ll find lawn games like “jean-ga” and horseshoes. There is also a free petting zoo (give me all the goats!) and pony rides for the little ones. The stables are home to more happy horses than this city girl has ever seen in one place. I was lucky enough to ride Cupcake into the Sonoran sunset at dusk. macdonaldsranch.com

THE MISSION OLD TOWN

Experiencing the great outdoors in California usually means sleeping bags, flashlights and hot dogs. I cherish the memories I’ve made gathering around campfires and swapping stories with friends while drinking out of red cups, but I’ve always wished for something more—more sophisticated, more elevated. Switching out a plastic red cup for a wine glass, hot dogs for fine dining and flashlights for twinkling cafe lights, Wing & Barrel Ranch offered the solution to this desire at their private and exclusive shooting club in Sonoma.

I devoured my meal while sitting on their spacious back deck, taking in the gorgeous view. Chef Charlie Palmer is the culinary advisor to the ranch, which offers members full-service dining throughout the year. The rooms are spacious and well-appointed with living areas, down beds and Frette bedding; our room faced the courtyard lawn, where we enjoyed both bocce ball and croquet while sharing a complimentary bottle of house wine. We started a second bottle touring the rose and vegetable garden and finished it fireside after enjoying the adults-only, hillside infinity-edged Jacuzzi.

• You can enjoy a front-row seat to serious cooking inside the kitchen at Lucia at Bernardus Lodge & Spa. Tucked neatly behind the cooking stations is a booth with seating for five and chandeliers strung above that let you witness the art and skill of Chef Christian Ojeda. The resort is rooted in cuisine, and the addition of Chef Ojeda (most recently of Montage Deer Valley) is furthering that tradition with a fresh take on classics and an integration of local Monterey resources. The wall behind the booth has been signed by countless celebrities, including Julia Child, Clint Eastwood and Leonardo DiCaprio.

The cars are available on a first come, first served basis, and we highly recommend doing this one morning before the wine tasting begins.

Must Be Vintage • A short drive (or ride) from the hotel is the Moto Talbott Museum, which boasts 170 vintage motorcycles from 17 different countries. There is a $10 admission fee, but it’s a great way to spend an hour marveling at the cycling heritage.
