POP ABOUT This Locally Sourced Soda is Popping Up all Over LA

WRITTEN BY: JEANNETTE SWANSON

What if we said there’s a way to still get the fizz of soda pop, but without the high fructose corn syrup and other faux ingredients? Popd Up, a small batch craft soda start up, provides a guilt free carbonated choice by utilizing locally sourced fruits and vegetables by saying no to preservatives and added colors. Founders Joy Youn and Kelsey Iino sell five craft sodas and cold brew teas: Hibiscus Agave, Orange Thyme Cream Soda, Caramel Apple and Lychee Butterfly; the fifth flavor changes with the seasons.

Using their bartending backgrounds, Joy and Kelsey enjoy crafting many flavors and combinations. Joy sometimes draws from Thai inspiration to create syrups with eastern Asian flavor. These fizzy and fierce female entrepreneurs love what they do and hope to eventually expand into an independent space and into the pre-packaging of their beverages and brewed preserves.

FOOD FESTIVAL PROS Ò In the name of being green and sustainable, Joy and Kelsey sell their sodas in 24-ounce jars for $8 when participating at area food festivals.

NATIVE KNOWLEDGE Ò Look for their seasonal sodas and cold brew teas: Asian Ginger Pear, Passion Fruit Peach, Blueberry Blackberry with Charcoal, Grapefruit Basil and Blood Orange Elderflower
