The sound of barking isn’t something that’s often heard at a typical LOCALE shoot, but today is a special day. Sharing the spotlight with our cover model, Nick Bateman, are five precious pups from local rescue organization Bark n’ Bitches, who are as adoptable as they are adorable.

Rambo, a four year old boxer/ American bulldog mix, waits patiently in the wings as Bateman finishes up in the makeup chair, getting lastminute touch-ups by our on-set hair and makeup artist, Jennifer Mau. “Sleeves are a little long, eh?” Bateman notes as he steps into his first look of the day, letting the first hints of his Canadian roots slip out. His eye for detail is sharp, as he inspects the cuffs of his jacket and adjusts the hidden clip that keeps his dress shirt from buckling. Once fully outfitted in a snappy navy suit with an open-collar pink dress shirt (plus a pocket square for added flair), Bateman and his four-legged costar mug for photographer Corey Wilson, making quite a pair. Up next, stylist Joseph Rene slips Bateman into a gray turtleneck sweater, layered under a sky blue blazer with sleek dress pants. Reclining in a camel-hued, midcentury-modern leather chair, Bateman works the vintage vibe, which is given a modern twist as kicky white tennis trainers win the footwear
debate, beating out a pair of traditional brown leather dress shoes. The scene is complete when twin tenweek-old pitbull/boxer-mix puppies Shai and Tal are set loose to scamper around the set, joining Bateman and covering him with kisses in their matching bow ties. For the cover shot, Bateman suits up in his own geo-patterned smoking jacket and matching pants, putting 11 years of professional modeling to good use, as he runs through his arsenal of poses and steely expressions, transitioning seamlessly from pensive to cheeky, irreverent to happy-go-lucky. Finally, Bateman plops down on a tufted white leather sofa, clad in a honey-colored corduroy blazer. Hopping deftly onto his lap is Preacher, a sassy husky/German Shepherd mix who is barely out of puppyhood at 1½ years old. Styled in a red and black plaid kerchief, Preacher takes playful nips at Bateman’s hands as the camera snaps away to document this dynamic duo, while fellow canine pal Cali, a senior pit bull who’s all of 11 years old, waits patiently nearby, eager for treats. We hope this shoot will serve as a friendly reminder that there are plenty of homeless pups around Los Angeles who are in need of a forever home.
